Here are a few problems I have with the amaze so far...
1) Fluctuating service. I hate this. I will have all the bars showing and then all of a sudden I get no service. What's up with that? The sensation would at least holds two bars at all times. (Oh and no wifi calling!)
2) Overheating issue. This phone gets too hot for no reason. For example I browse for 15 minutes and bam..its really hot. I make sure I exit apps by hitting the back button and my brightness is at 15%. There's no excuse for this.

4) wifi turning off??? I could be on wifi for a good hour and everything is OK, then I turn on the phone again to use it and I'm not connected to wifi anymore. I manually turn wifi on and off to get it to work again.
5) On the bottom in between the menu and back key my amaze has some light leaking through. Its tiny. I didn't notice it until it was completely dark but its there and now I can't help but keep staring at it. I wish I had a camera to take a picture of it.
6) Lastly and the most annoyong thing for me is a clicking sound. When I pick up the phone it sounds like something getting snapped in place. And its almost everytime. Wtf is that. haha.

the no wifi calling thing sucks, will be fixed with root/update so meh
my battery drains about 50% when i'm sleeping, though this may be to mediocre service that goes in and out, going to try and shut mobile network off tonight and see if it fixes the issue
Though I agree with most of the other "problems" ya'll have listed...
I was told by 3 representatives, and one sales person (who sold me the phone) that you have to activate the new sim card included with the device to take advantage of the new wifi-calling that T-Mobile is rolling out (this includes the new GSII on t-mo). - I spoke with so many because none of them could activate the new sim correctly...and were baffled themselves as to why it was so difficult...haha.
Honestly, I havent been able to test wifi calling because the place where I'm renting has never worked with mobile devices, except for apple devices (of course...haha). I may report back here later when i go somewhere else with wifi.
Just wanted to pass on some info I was told by 4 separate people - they all claimed that's what a memo showed on their system when they pull up the AMAZE and GSII.
I come from a mytouch 4g, i have the same issue, suddenly i have no service then it's back on again. Never had that with the mytouch...
Well, I have had mine since launch day. I have a little but not much light bleed. I have had no heating issues. Last night out at bars I saw the signal issue. One sec I could speed test and pull down 14. Then I would notice no 4G symbol, try to speed test again and it would say no signal. Still love it though, nice and fast!!
My buttons light up when it's dark, but not when it's light. Is there anyway to turn this light sensor off and keep these lights on so I can see my home, menu etc buttons?

This doesn't sound right to me at all. I activated a new sim and I don't have the feature. How can a sim control the software on the phone?

Definately seems there is a (buttons) light sensor, they do basically stay on at night, not in daytime.
Prolly see some update/option to this in the future, keep em' on or leave to the sensor.

The sim is not controlling the software, but it can affect what information is communicated with t-mobile.
I don't know what you mean by you don't have this feature. Among other ways to activate the hotspot capability, you should find the "Wi-Fi Hotspot" app on the device.
Just to repeat/clarify my original statement/post: The Amaze 4G and the GS II (according to others) allow you to activate the wifi hotspot feature, have your other wifi-enabled devices connect to your phone, but when you try to access the internet with those wifi-enabled devices, you are prompted to upgrade your plan to include the $15/mo. plan.
I hope this is clear to all.
Te whole service popping in and out is starting to drive me nuts!!!! 3 bars of 4g then nthing! 1 bar of 4g then it turns into 2 bars of 2g! WTH!?!?!? Never had soo many reception issues on ANY of my Tmo phones!
Dosent seem to matter where I am when this happens as it happens often, far too often!
I have to assume that of all the connection point inside the back cover of the phone at least ONE of them is some sort of antenna?????
Cmon Tmo?!?!?
Even if it does warm up, I doubt that you will feel it if you put it in a case. Unless the phone is burning up..then yeah.
I am coming from a HTC sensation 4G and it had WiFi calling and WiFi hotspot feature.
The manual that comes with the amaze shows how to use WiFi calling also the one on HTC's site,
If I could put the sensation Rom on the amaze I would be happy as the sensation had what I want working,
I love the feel of the Amaze it feels much more masculine and fits nice in my big hands I find my self not mistakenly touching the softkey's as much.
Also I can seem to figure out where 4gb or the Rom is as it shows only 9gb for storage and 2gb for something else
On another note I have seen a post that shows an Amaze with WiFi calling, the had an earlier firmware,

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but you guys can probably still exchange the Amaze for the SGS2. I'm really not having any of the problems described here. It dropped the GPS once yesterday... that's about it so far.

why would you get flamed. only 99% of the people on this site know more about the devices theyre holding and things their carrier offers to them then the actual employees, one of the most known things probably being the grace period you have to return/swap out your phone if you want... noooo, no reason to be flamed.

To those who are experiencing issues with the Amaze especially after returning it a million times before buyers remorse is up, I recommend testing out the GS2 aka Hercules. Other than the resolution this phone is really great. The resolution isn't that noticeable unless you have OCD.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I jumped ship to the GSII. So far I'm happier. The amaze does have more bells and whistles but it was a bit heavy for me and the GS II has got - not substantially - but improved battery life and a more visually appealing screen. Also my eyes aren't great, so I actually appreciate the lower resolution screen which keeps the icons bigger. I can see the pixels easier than on the qhd of the amaze, but i have to be "looking for them" to really notice.
Some people are having better luck with their Amaze so just like a ton of other companies out there these days...there's a big quality control issue.
Looking service is really getting on my nerves now and i dont like this any more. Wonder if there will a fix for this from HTC or Tmobile
As stated. I don't know why or how, but for those of you who do tethered gaming and are fed up with the crazy lag spikes like me... this solves your problem. Skyping yourself does not seem to work however.
If anyone knows what process Skype starts on this phone which is responsible for this behavior, and has a simpler means of duplicating it, I will buy you a beer to have that in my hands.
Hope someone finds this trick useful, and even better, finds a means of exploiting it.

Probably has to do with QOS settings.
edit: don't know if that is anything you can change though, just sounds like that.

In call. Doesn't work Skyping yourself unfortunately.
If we could identify what it's doing someone could create a script or an app or something to get that benefit going 24/7.
Bump for a better life.
Really? Nothing?
My best guess is because there is an active data session running it eliminates the initial connection tethering has. Try this next time you're tethering.... Run a speedtest before the Skype call and during the Skype call and look at the ping times.

Why would it break your phone?
Is normal that your phones lifetime would be shorter than if you would just let it a drawer and not use it...
but you will not be using the same phone in 10 years...

using proximity sensors to lock/unlock the phone 10 times per minute will not kill my sensors or any other hardware component ? hope that because i don't want lose my phone,it costs ~300eur
up please!!
Sensors are pretty much always "on" and receiving/transmitting dara(if I'm not mistaken). Then it's up to the app to do something with that data.

Lesicnik1 is right: it was to keep turned on and searching for information all time, even if there is nothing in front of it (for the proximity one)
I doesnt turn on when you put wave in front of it, it does a action.
just like your nervous system, when you get your hand (senso) burned, and the the information get to you brain (phone internals/chip) and it sends the action to take the hands from the fire (turn screen on)....
even when you are not feeling anything on your hand the body keeps the communication with your brain so that it knows when something hapens...
long story short, it will not affect the battery or device life for using it...
hope it helps:good:
many thanks to all your answers
The most risky part is probably a battery, since it is not very good for a phone to be constantly on a charger. But we have not killed any phone in 2-3 years, and most people change their phone in 3 years anyway.
Hello matrix users i have big problem whit my phone. When i use it for a while its getting really freaking hot in the area of the buttons and the speaker its not the battery also the battery life is ok. so i think it's something hidden beneath the buttons... any ideas what my cause this? btw this begin after radio update i used some chinish radio but after few days i back the stock radio. i tested few other radios and roms but no changes.. my phone still get hot..
Please help meeeeeee
It's most probably soc or modem. Under the buttons there is not much that could heat up. Did you recently change your location? Try setting modem to 2g only.

Just a thought, but the point at which is starts heating up might help indicate what the problem is, that and logs (logcat and dmesg).
I know that mine has a major issue with draining/heating (hot enough to smell it) while using the GPS navigation, even with the official, unmodified Motorola GB ROM (haven't had the change to try it in ICS), and the only way around that I found was to download (cache) the maps. In your case, however, it's possible you may have damaged the modem. Just for kicks, I would try booting into recovery and let it idle for a few minutes to see if it gets hot. Another option is to select the boot option that bypasses the modem and see if that gets hot as well. Without logs, it's impossible to guess beyond what Krystian already told you as sometimes it's hard enough to figure it out even with logs.
AFAIK, GPS is a big energy spender and a big device heater for all devices out there. This is due to technical limitations of the GPS system and is not really avoidable.

My phone has been over heating. A LOT. Even with basic use. No gaming or anything. Anyone experience this? I called tech and they were no help. Told me to run in safe mode and remove my SD card..... Ya that won't work for me.
Thinking about full wipe but I dread resetting up everything.

I haven't had any issues like that. Only over heading I experienced were while using car navigation while wireless charging. You can try shopping cache plus restart to see if something is stuck, or if you have a new installation freeze that and see if things get better.
Another thing to look at is detailed battery use, see if there is any surprises. Many times the app that causes heating will also cause faster battery drain. If you can't find the app then full wipe may be needed.
Edit: one other question, did you change case recently? some cases don't transfer heat as well.
I did. A lot. Got to the point that I could take one picture and the camera would shut off because it was over heating. Hard reset didn't fix anything. I also had wireless problems (wifi would never stay off, airplane mode didn't work), and battery life was pretty poor (coming from Note 2). Replacement phone seems much better on all counts.
Thanks for the info guys. No case on the phone. Still working on rooting and playing with Xposed.... Maybe something there will help.... Or just have Verizon send a new one. I really do love this phone... So hopefully I can resolve this.... Maybe lollipop will help... If we ever get it....

Update
So had Verizon send me a new phone..... Have had it a day and a half and have already seen signs of over heating...... Granted it's close to 100 outside..... But I've been in the car with AC using GPS and it was getting really warm. I've had SEVERAL other phones with the same or more heavy usage with no over heating issues......
Not sure what to do. If it keeps up I'm going to have to consider a new phone....
Anyone know of any risks using the phone when it's over heating??? It's not going to explode or catch fire is it???

Same here. I can use the camera on this one but this is annoying. Might sell and go back to my trusty Note 2 that still hasn't sold anyway.
Anybody find any workarounds (besides the tin-foil inside the case thing)? I get camera shut-down after just playing around with the various modes without even recording anything. Thinking about getting an ice-pack to mount on the phone when I want to record videos......

I was having the overheat issue when I used the camera, so i downloaded the google camera app and it seems to work better.
My wife and I got refurbished phones from VZW, her's crashes to home screen now (Camera) and mine works for a few minutes longer than the old one.
Right now I am looking into getting a new phone, this one is getting annoying, want something I can get current Android version on and not a year old unpatched (Stagefright) leak that is not even Marshmallow.
