Hi everyone. I need help... Sorry I'm a bit busy and only did a quick search and couldn't find enough relevant information.
I'm getting a new phone but I like the 3D feature on the Evo 3D so I'm keeping it as a backup phone. Apart from 3D, I also want it to be unrooted so I can use a mobile banking app (Barclays Mobile Banking) that won't run on rooted phones. I've read the revert back to stock threads in development forum but they seemed to require relocking bootloader and flashing back to stock rom as well but I want a custom rom without root. Is that possible?
My phone is now unlocked, S-Off, rooted, installed TWRP and running P.A.C.MAN rom+kernel which is awesome. If possible I would like to flash a sense 3.6 based rom (e.g. Cool Sense) only for 3D and then unroot. Does anyone know how to do that?
Thanks in advance!!
To unroot your phone, download the "Supersu" app from the Play Store, enter the application and select the "Full unroot" option.
It may ask you to reboot your device afterwards.
EDIT: I just noticed about the ROM question. Honestly not sure about that one.

I just ordered my Sprint Hero online and it should be here by Monday. I have read all the Tutorials on how to root and how to Flash the custom ROMs. But I have two questions which I may have missed in all that reading.
1) Is there a possibility where further down the road an official update will not allow anyone to root their phone?
2) Can I root and do a nandroid backup. And not install any ROM for a while?
My goal is to play with the Stock Sprint Hero for atleast a month or so before I feel the need to try Custom ROMs.

Answers below!
1) If you update via an RUU, there is always a chance that HTC will replace the SPL with something that is uncrackable (or at least currently uncrackable). This occurred with later RUUs, and this is why the Goldcard method is often needed in order to root the phone.
When I had my G1 and received push updates, you needed to effectively "switch off" the auto-update routines to avoid getting a stock update that could prevent rooting further down the line. Since Sprint seem to push OTA updates out to CDMA Hero's so it is always possible that this could cause an issue for rooted ROMs, but I'd have though most custom ROMs would've switched off OTA updates anyway.
2) Yes

Dave
Thanks Dave.
Dave,
I rooted my Sprint Hero, not necessarily for speed, more so I dont have to look at those horrible apps that Sprint doesnt want to let anyone remove.
I successfully rooted, nandroid backed up and removed the Sprint ware and installed THIS OPTIMIZER FILE (love the lockscreen) but have not decided whether I'm going to take the plunge into custom ROM world. I am actually impressed with how this phone runs (for now) and dont yet need to free up internal drive space.
My question is this: Essentially having the stock rom, is the fact my phone is rooted likely to cause a problem with future Sprint updates?
If so, can you unroot and leave the Sprint-crap out or do you have to go back to 100% absolute stock?
Thanks
I've read most all the posts here, but didn't see answers to my questions. Sorry if I missed something.
Since the OTA TW update locks the bootloader, I'd rather not do that. I'm not sure why I care, but currently my 32GB GT is unlocked and I'd rather not loose something I have, in case I need it later. So, if I use the ROM posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198921 (UEKMB Stock + root + Deodexed), will my bootloader remain unlocked? My understanding is that this ROM is pretty much the same as the latest US OTA TW update, right?
Next, I'd like to get rid of the grey taskbar. I understand that I would use this: QuickBar_Black_TW.zip. Is this applied like the full TW ROM? Sorry for the dumb question, but I've never used CWM.
Speaking of CWM, if I later decide to sell my GT and want to put it back to factory condition, can CWM be removed completely, after flashing a stock ROM?
I've rooted an Optimus phone before. Since this TW ROM is already rooted, I assume that I can remove some of the junk apps that Samsung included in the TW update? On the phone, I used SDX App Removal. Can I use it on the GT? I tried using Titanium on the phone, but when it came time to put the phone back to stock to sell it, Titanium wouldn't restore anything. Good thing I had also backed things up with the SDX app.
Thanks.
I know how to root a phone, and tablet. Install custom Andriod Roms. I want to knw how to tell if a phone, tablet has been rooted or had a custom rom installed?
Thank you,
Donovan Frasure
As far as I know, if the phone is currently rooted, you could connect it to your computer with a usb cable, open terminal, write something like adb, su root, and if you get the root access here, then the phone is rooted.
Regarding adventures from the past, probably no way of knowing. If the user had a rooted phone with a custom rom, and decided to go back to the original firmware, succesfully reflashed it, then the phone is like factory-brand-new from the software perespective.
I doubt if information about having been rooted is stored on the system.
Btw, please don't tell me you're working in some telecom's customer service
No I was helping a friend try to root his EVO Shift 4G I used the Z4 temp root that was on this forum but it made it slow I meen real slow. The he told be he had tried before. The only way I knew how to check is to look at the about this device. That made me wonder if he tried to flash a custom rom and had problems so I wanted to know if there was a way to tell.
If you want to check if ROM is currently rooted, try "Root Checker" from Android market.
Hey everyone, I am new to the rooting world however I have only experienced good things. I decided to root my thunderbolt using TB Autoroot+htc sync last night(had the original stock froyo, was going to installed cyanogen mod 7) and was successful. Unfortunately, I then installed the leaked 2.3.4 RUU GB which rerooted my TB before I installed the cm7(wanted to try the RUU out, bad idea lol). I was wondering if all or any of these are possible (dont care about losing data, just don't want to brick, ie avoiding command lines if possible):
1. root the phone while maintaining the leaked 2.3.4 RUU, just as was done for FROYO? Original reason for rooting was to remove the bloatware apps, but not having custom roms would be ok at this point if that is this is the only option. I know there is the revolution method to root, however will that work on the leaked 2.3.4 RUU?
2. root the tb with my current 2.3.4 RUU and install the BAMF 2.3.4/sense 3.0 GB build, or some other custom 2.3.4 rom?
A tutorial or walk through would be great! I know there are some out there, however I am looking for one specifically for those that have the leaked 2.3.4 RUU on the thunderbolt.
Also, can someone explain the difference in features of the GB builds that have been out for some time(customs) vs the RUU by verizon? I'm not talking about the physical aspects or the apps that come with, but more in terms of installing/switching between them. I know I need to root in order to install the custom roms, but assuming i can root the 2.3.4 RUU, will I be able to install any other 2.3.4 rom such as BAMF or cyanogen without problems? I have heard that you just arent allowed to go backwards, ie back to Froyo one you update to GB, but I should be able to install any 2.3.4 GB ROM once rooted via the bootloader(power+volume down) True?
Any help would be great! Thanks!
Yes you can. Just use revolutionary to root the new GB build. Here is a video tutorial for you.
Well, here comes your first less than pleasant reply...
Pretty much everything you wanted to know is posted in my thread stickied in the Q&A section. That's also where this post is going to end up. Please check my thread on basic noob questions, search before posting, and post in the correct forum.

If you are rooted, just use a program like root explorer to search for a file called otacerts.zip and rename it to otacerts.bak
When you open root explorer, make sure to put it into write mode. look at the top left side of the program and press on the mount r/w option
Cant find rom

If you used your phone to download a rom, its in the "download" folder, move it to the root of sd card

Root Error
I am trying to Root my Thunderbolt but keep getting the following error:
Failed to get Root!
I am using revolutionary.
I have installed, made sure their was a connection, and then removed HTC Sync.
I downloaded and installed Android USB Drivers.
I selected USB Debugging
Thunderbolt Info:
HBOOT 1.04.000
Android 2.3.4
ROM Ver 2.11.605.9
What am I missing and where can I get it? Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks in advance...
I've never rooted but I believe you need to downgrade. Revolutionary does not work with the latest OTA. There are several posts around that explain how to downgrade to the previous OTA (link below). Then you should be able to use the revolutionary method.

Yes you need to downgrade to 2.11.605.5 then use reveloutionary
I searched and searched and searched and couldn't find an updated clear answer to my question....
and that question is:
I have a rooted, unlocked tf201 running a custom ROM with the JellyBean bootloader...nvFlash NOT installed...can/how do I return to stock?
I don't want to return the tablet, no damage or anything....I just want to revert to stock (as close to stock) if possible...
I see a few "stock JellyBean" ROMs but I didn't see "JB bootloader" anywhere in the ROMs posts and I would like to wipe the tablet first if possible...then push a custom recovery through fastboot & flash a stock ROM if that is something that would work.
would this be possible without turning the tablet into a worthless POS?
Don't want to flash a ROM with the incorrect bootloader & brick the tablet...if I read correctly nvFlash must be flashed BEFORE a JellyBean bootloader is installed (is that correct?) and it's too late for that...
I saw a "Full Wipe" zip I could possibly flash if that will work for me (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1670824...
please let me know if this is possible and how to do it/where there is a post with instructions...
Thanks!

This rom is stock JB from Asus with a little help from the OP to make it faster. Just follow all instructions in the thread and you'll be fine.
Hey, I need to install AirWatch MTD agent for work to get email/other work stuff on my tab. I'm not sure if all air watch wants us unroot, it is not very specific when it says that it can't finish setup because of my current settings. I think it may even check to make sure you are on a stock rom, so my question is, will the rom on the link provided be "stock" enough to install AirWatch and get my work stuff? I don't feel nearly as bad about taking this TF201 back to stock as I did my GNex since there is a huge difference there and I use my phone way more.
Thanks for any help.
You can always temp unroot your tablet. That should work for your purposes

How do you temp unroot? Is there a way to unroot a rom before flashing it, maybe going in and deleting the su apk from the .zip?

Just do it from within superuser

This is not working ... airwatch is super picky. I did the temp unroot in su and then went to settings --> apps and deactivated super user. Airwatch still has my device listed as compromised on the server. I think it wants a stock rom without root. Any ideas?
