Has anyone had any success in restoring sms/mms with TiBu? I used to be able to do it all the time on my Galaxy Nexus, but now with the GS4, it fails every time. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure if it is related or not but SMS backup & restore does not work on the S4 either. I have a beta app from the dev but haven't tried it yet. In the mean time I have been using SMS backup+

Hmm, thats weird.. I was able to use SMS backup & restore a few days ago. It was actually my last resort since I couldnt get TiBu to work. The only thing I dont like about that is it doesnt support MMS yet. Are you able to restore MMS as well with SMS backup+?

Ran into the same problem with TiBu, went to the device I was moving my old texts from and the only way it would do it was if I removed the embedded pictures and it restored
I started a fresh titanium backup folder with this phone. I have 3 sms backups. The first 2 appear OK and have file sizes of 1-2 megs but the 3rd just has a ? In the description and only a few kb. However I cannot restore any of them and trying to make new backups fail. The first ones were most likely from a rooted stock. I've been on hyper since and the backup never worked on it as far as I can tell. I've wanted to give touch wiz a shot so I have yet to try any AOSP flavors yet so I cannot comment on those.

It kept failing for me too. I found an app called JS backup (it was free) in the play store that worked for me. I just made a backup on my S3 and used wifi direct to send it to my S4 and made sure to put the backup file in the folder for JS backup and it worked perfectly. The only downside is that the texts I already had on my S4 got wiped out when i restored the backup.

I had no problem restoring SMS/MMS with Titanium Backup on my S4. I had a backup from my galaxy nexus that was running CM10.1 and had no issue restoring with CM10.1 on my S4. Are you guys trying to restore from a custom ROM on your old phone to a TW ROM on the S4?
I am also having problem restoring SMS backups from TB. I am using Mybackup Pro to backup and restore my SMS/MMS.
I believe the issue is with touchwiz. TiBU can restore SMS but has issues with MMS. Delete any MMS from your old phone before you do a backup and it should restore the SMS fine. Or use a non TW ROM.

Could be any number of things honestly. My suggestion is to sync all of your contacts and info to google servers, then when you update/change roms you can sign in and all of your apps will redownload and your contacts will show up. This prevents the compatibility issues with restoring data from titanium backup. Honestly the only use I have for titanium is to freeze/remove bloatware and the like.

Use SMS Backup+ for messages and call log. You have to change the options for call log to be included. It won't backup MMS so just save those images. Convert your contacts to Google contacts instead of Phone Contacts.
Hey guys! I am planning to install the CM7 ROM on my Droid X2. I want to back up my Applications and the application data and any other stuff so that I can restore those apps on CM7. But I heard some people are having trouble using Titanium Backup on CM7.
Are others having this issue too? And if this is indeed a big problem, what other application can I use to back up my apps and app data and restore them on CM7?
Thanks for you help in advance.

Then how do you backup and restore app data?
In the BSR recovery, you can do a Nandroid backup. Then, when you are ready to install those apps, you can get a couple of different apps to read from the nandroid backup:
Titanium Backup - But, if you have this, then just use it to backup your apps and data. But, it can restore nandroided programs and settings.
Yaffs Explorer - You can go into the nandroid backup and retrieve programs, settings and files from this and it's free.
I myself use Titanium Backup Pro to backup my programs and settings via the normal backup operations. But, I have used it to restore applications from a nandroid backup when I forgot to backup my settings via Titanium Backup before flashing. That's why I ALWAYS nandroid backup before I flash or SBF.
Titanium Backup, been using it for some time, never had an issue with it.

+1 to this...as long as you do NOT restore system data (ringtones, bluetooth pairings, remembered wifi networks, etc...) . User applications and application data has never caused me a problem going between ROMs.
Nandroid from recovery is the best and most accurate, in my opinion its way better than titanium because it actually makes a complete image of your current system and its free, never had any problems with it and it has saved me so many times...

Agreed for recovering from a mistake or installing something that didn't work. The OP was looking to be able to move to a different ROM without having to reinstall every app by hand. Nandroid won't help with that...

But, you can use various apps, like Titanium Backup and others, to reinstall the apps from a nandroid backup. Titanium Backup is really good.

I use Titanium Backup and have never had a problem with restoring my apps and app data on CM7 or MIUI. I think the people who have problems with it are using it to backup and restore their system data, which is not good when changing a ROM since the system data can be a little different from ROM to ROM. Use it for apps and app data only.
I agree with all that say Titanium Backup. I did have a problem with it freezing when it was in between reinstalling an app and switching to another when I ran the batch. However, this might have been me being impatient and trying to enjoy CM7 too soon. lol. Also you can restore from the nandroid backup with the paid version of Titanium Backup.
Rom toolbox automatically backs up apks for root users, no data though.
Titanium backup might be ur best bet
MIUI X2
I have had the freezing problem also but it has only done it with cm7. Reboot usually fixed it. With cm7 i find myself rebooting allot anyway for little glitches. Kinda like windows really just doesn't seem to want to run continuous for long periods of time.

With CM7, there are many small issues and annoyances for me.
I am going back to stock and maybe over to Eclipse.
Titanium: Frequent crashes, need data wipe to get it going for couple of my apps, (I NEVER restore system stuffs, just my apps).
Games: Some of them have random pauses, some of them have random crashes, 1 game won't work (Siegecraft) etc.
Apps: Sygic Navigation app does not work, Navigon works though, Gallery app re-starts all the time.
Phone calls: I am suspecting some calls are NOT coming through for me, my wife tells me that she has to call me 2-5 times to get through sometimes. I see some missed calls and get notifications, but I could SWEAR that the phone never rang.
Yes, this was my daily driver for couple of weeks, but I would not recommend it.
These issues (other than the phone calls) are minor and annoyance only, but when added all up, It doesn't contribute to good overall experience.
Once it gets few iterations of bug fixes, I will probably get back to it.

I use TiBu to backup my apps and data. However, don't use TiBu to restore system apps or data. That just causes problems. I create a "restore" group and put most of my apps in there and restore both the app and data. I also create a group for "apps only" and this just restores the app and not the data. Apps like Groupon I have had to go back and wiped their data to get them to work. If you don't have a bunch of apps (unlike me with 307 apps) I would recommend going through each app on it's own.
Ciao!
My Backup Pro has been very good to me. You can make data and app backsups that can me stored online aswell as on your phone's SD card.
Its also dummy-proof; you'll figure it out in ~15 minutes.

i was trying to bring my call logs and text/sms messages from international galaxy s2 running 2.3.4
i tried several ways, mybackup pro was the first... then just simple gosms pro backup/restore on sd card
both times it crashed my phone something crazy com.phone.service or something kept freezing, couldnt make calls or texts, etc
anyways, after factory reset 3 times i am just going to lose those logs... this is something Android needs to work on... while i HATED ITUNES... at least i could migrate all my stuff over without a hassle!
it has taken me over 5 hours to setup my Note just like my GS2!

I've had issue with GoSMS just totally screwing the pooch on its backup database, so it might have just been one of those cases for you. I was able to migrate from my XT860 just fine from a recent backup.
I used sms backup+, no problems so far. Restored 8000 texts.
I tried to import my old texts from my iphone using isms2droid and then SMS backup & Restore to restore the file that isms2droid made.
I haven't been able to run my Messaging app since then, and I think I'm going to have to factory reset this thing :-(
I used SMS Backup and Restore. No issues.
Another vote for SMS Backup and Restore. Also, he makes a similar app for call logs called Call Log Backup and Restore. I have used both going from every version of Android from 2.1-4.0.3 and back again.

Afternoon guys,
So i've just updated from ICS (XXDLI8) to JB (DLJ4), used the download from samfirmware and Odin, then factory reset in the phone so that my internal SD was completely fresh/new, all good so far, but afterwards, when I tried to restore the backup I had made in ICS of my SMS/MMS, instead of grouping all my messages together in a single thread per person, it had a separate thread for each individual reply... giving me over 4000 threads O_O
Has anyone else experienced this? If not, I guess there might be a glitch that occurred during flashing with Odin and i'll just re-do it in a bit
I did the same thing but mine worked perfectly. Just try again and good luck
Hmmmm
Ok, so i've just wiped and re-flashed the ROM with Odin, restored my messages and the exact same thing has happened, every message has it's own thread... I was hoping a re-flash would fix any glitch but it doesn't look like it!
Anyone have any ideas?
I had the same trouble with all JB Roms I tried, asked the same question and got no answer/fix. So for now I'm using CM10 based rom's and no trouble.

It's a bit frustrating! But at least it's only SMS/MMS rather than something OS breaking haha. I guess i'll just have to live with it!
Wow, finally I have found this thread....... oh, and I guess im not the only one having this issue then.
Yep, same here. I flashed a rooted stock rom (DLJ4) too and same issue here. I restored all my messages but the conversation/threaded messages are no more.
I did reflash a few times but to no avail.
Can someone please advise me and the OP.....
Many thanks

Same ROM?
Also, I have just recieved a few messages from someone and all three messages show up seperatley!!
Forgot to mention, the SMS app I am using is the AOSP (google)one.
As you guys have figured out, My Backup sucks sometimes for backing up and restoring SMS messages. I flash various different Sammy JB ROMS fairly frequently. I would suggest using a dedicated program. I've always used the free app called SMS Backup & Restore by Ritesh Sahu, and have never had any problems.
Use titanium and use the .xml restore methods in future
AOSP SMS on Samsung based ROMs has that issue. Happened to me on Dragon ROM when I chose AOSP messaging. Worked fine when I flashed again, this time with stock Samsung messaging app. Try reverting to Samsung stock messaging and check. Who knows, it might resolve the issue. Good luck.
Alternatively, you can use SMSBackup+ to backup your messages and call logs to your Gmail account. Works like a charm for me. You won't need to restore the messages as they are just a click away.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Really appriciate the responses guys.
Just to clarfy a few things.
I have been using "SMS Backup & Restore Pro" (for a while) and it has always restored my messages without any issues (threaded messages restore properly). These were usually ICS Roms and "AOSP" JB Roms.
So I'm guessing its not the app itself. Having said that, I will try the app someone mentioned a few posts above- which links to Gmail. Sounds good.
Also, the person that mentioned about Titanium backup, I think you might have the answer.....I usually restore all apps and settings via Titanium. When it gives me the option for XML or Snapshot (I think), usually I choose XML but this time I chose Snapshot. So, I will reflash again and restore with Titanium but this time choosing XML. I will let you know if this works.
Finally, the person who mentioned about reverting to Stock Samsung messageing app, I have tried it but still get the same issue.
Thanks to all of you for responding and for your suggestions. :good:
I will get back here once I have reflashed. :fingers-crossed:
Thank you
ok guys.
I have flashed a few different Roms now and still have the same issue.....even with the samsung messaging app.
This is really frustrating me now!!
@ Slaphead20, can you advise me on how you did the .XML restore?
I tried but can not seem to find the option.
The option after I flash a ROM where it asks me whether I want to choose XML or snapshot doesnt seem to have appeared with the Roms I have been flashing. (Omega/sotmax & Haldric)
Hi, well tbh I just tap on the titanium loss for each one and restore, so I'm going to check in the preferences menu and see what I might of set up to get it working.....back in a bit!

I can't find the exact setting, so it might be a case of having to delete the titanium app settings backup that it creates on ext sd and re configure the app, but in the menu there are two relevant entries but I'm not messing with them to experiment as all is working for me......and if it ain't broke........ ..
This may be a dumb question, but when/how would you use titanium backup? I've been reading threads, looking for a good first ROM, and I am surprised to see several of them (CM, AOKP, others) say NOT to restore data from a Titanium backup after installing their ROM.
Well... then... whats the point of Titanium Backup? If you cant restore the info, how/when would you use it?
Thanks for clarifying,
UB
I believe it's for when you have to do a sudden wipe or restore on your phone due to a technical issue with it. Changing out the roms I would imagine would have negative impacts on your phone.

Sent from the best phone ever. Yes, the Galaxy Note 2 | Beans 7 |
Most devs I have seen on threads will say it is ok for apps from the google store. Like angry birds, stuff like that.
It is the system apps, etc that cause issues.
I use it religiously to restore my purchased apps, etc.
yea i have been using titanium backup since the OG droid i only do market apps like the post above says. and i never let google restor anything when flashing a new rom. i would recommend if your new to TB just to do a batch backup before you go to flash a new rom thats what i do i used to do a schedual but stopped that.
on a side note i do back up my bluetooth pairings, wifi connections, and sms messages (but you have to be careful with sms if your going from one android version to another example : backing up 4.1.2 and restoring it on 4.2.1 may have ill effects)
It's best just to restore data for user apps, not the app and not system apps. By doing this you should never run into problems. Most of the times user apps won't cause problems if you restore the app on the same device with similar rom (touchwiz to touchwiz or AOSP to AOSP). When on the same device but different rom base (touchwiz to AOSP, AOSP to touchwiz) you'll see issues with some apps but not others. When going to a different phone there's a very high chance restoring any app will cause problems (data only is fine though). So the easiest way to avoid problems is to allow Google to restore your apps then go in and restore data. One system setting I haven't had problems with restoring (data only) is wifi, avoid restoring any other system apps or data. Also you should know that text messages backed up from touchwiz restore fine on other touchwiz roms, but may not have correct date and times, and vice versa. Also check out app extractor, it allows you to restore from your nandroid (free only allows 5 apps at a time, whereas titanium is one by one in the free version)
I appreciate the replies. Question on backing up just the data for my apps but not the apps themselves. I don't see an option for this in Titanium Backup. It seems to be giving me the option of user apps or user apps plus system apps. I don't see a user data only option. Am I missing something?

I usually do titanium backup for apps (all the white letter ones), and settings, bookmark, sms, call logs, widgets (selected green letter ones)....but no system apks (red letters). When you make these backups, you must remove all old backups.
