One method of flashing Clockworkmod Recovery without using a computer that requires you to be rooted, is to use terminal emulator (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm) and the "dd" command. To flash the recovery image you can run the following command:
Code:
dd if=path/to/recovery.img of=path/to/recovery/partition
Path to the recovery image is where on your device you have placed the Clockworkmod recovery.img you downloaded and path to recovery partition is the block that the recovery partition is stored on. To figure out which partition is the recovery partition you can run a command similar to:
Code:
ls -l /dev/block/platform/{platform specific processor directory}/by-name
This will allow you to flash Clockworkmod Recovery without a computer provided you have root access. Let me know if you still have questions .

exit [hit enter]
4. Now in the original terminal window

5. Now exit all termainl windows and reboot your phone.
6. Download

7. Mount your phones sd card and drop recovery-RA-eris-v1.6.2.img on to it and eject
your phone.
8. Open the Terminal and copy and paste the following commands with the phone connected
to your computer.
8. adb shell [hit enter]
9. su [hit enter]
10. flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-eris-v1.6.2.img
11. To get into recovery turn off you phone and hold the Volume Up + Power until it boots into recovery.
That's it.
ROM Manager and Clockwork recovery does not work for the Eris.
ROM Manager and Clockwork recovery does not work for the Eris (as far as I know).
Edit: Oops, sorry for the double post.
I currently have the clockwork recovery installed on my eris, can I just download amon's recovery image and install it to switch to it? Or do I have to uninstall clockwork recovery and then install amon's?

try to flash it from rom manager,(under other recoveries) if Rom manager has worked for you with no problems. if it doesnt work follow instructions as listed in 1st post
I wouldn't use clockwork recovery, it messed up my installation to the point i couldn't flash any rom or restore any nand. When i would try to flash anything it would fail, It failed when i tried to use the root rom....After I tried flashing root rom i had a nice looking brick on my desk....(I even changed back to RA but Clockwork had messed up my phone so bad that RA didn't even work either....
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!
Yeah, use Amon's. It does every job you need, and is 100% stable and reliable.

When you are doing this, are you in the correct directory? For example, my SDK is installed in /android , so first I would:
cd /android/tools
then
./adb shell
could someone help me with this. i really need to get the stock recovery image on my eris and im alittle noobie at this stuff. if any one could help id be sooooo happy
I'm not sure how to flash amons on a mac. I know for windows you put the recovery.img in the sdk tools folder, boot into fastboot and type
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
To get stock recovery (I assume you want your phone back to stock) then flash the official ruu. Will return your phone to 100% stock. You can find it on a sticky in the Eris general forums I believe.

I installed Amon Ra as part of the root for leakers instructions some time ago. -- Is there a new version out? (Search was surprisingly not helpful) And what is the best way to update recovery?

There is no new version out; the first version (v1.6.2) is the only one that Amon_RA published.
IF there was a new version, you could flash it by using adb with the existing Amon_RA. You don't even need to push a version of "flash_image" to the phone, because it is already in /sbin in Amon_RA recovery. Just get the recovery image to your SD card, start an interactive shell (adb shell), and then
flash_image recovery /sdcard/<wherever-you-put-it>/recovery-RA-eris-v1.6.2.img
Yes, you can "flash a recovery partition by using the recovery" - because when you are interacting with it (the recovery boot), it lives entirely in a ramdisk.
The second easiest way is to have the engineering bootloader (1.49.2000 S-OFF) installed on your phone, and flash it with fastboot from the PC, as in
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-eris-v1.6.2.img
Note that neither of these two methods perform any integrity checks on the recovery image file that the normal "Flash .zip from sdcard" ROM installation method does. Therefore, it is imperative that someone using these methods is extremely diligent in cross-checking image MD5 signatures after it has been transferred to the SD card. Amon_RA also has the "md5sum" utility built into it's shell, BTW.
I mention this last point as a warning to newbs - they seem to routinely corrupt files when they transfer them to the SD card. (I suppose they are not using the "safely remove hardware" controls correctly, or they are getting truncated downloads).

ROM Manager does not support flashing on the Streak, sadly, but you can do it from a terminal.
I believe the command is
flash_image recovery recovery.img
from a terminal when you're logged in as root.
Edit: I have never tried this myself, but it is the code used by stock roms to reflash the stock recovery at reboot time.

Anyone think terminal emu on device could flash the cwm recovery.img file??

Just in curiosity ive seen rooting and flashing done on prior devices with terminal emulator right from the device itself!
Anyone think it be possible to apply cwm recovery zip or. Img file from terminal ?
OR root from terminal.. its been done with a few htc devices
Im just wondering if i tried moto- fastboot commands from terminal if it would flash romracers cwm recovery??
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
As long as you have the flash_image binary on your phone you'll be able to flash a recovery image from Terminal Emulator.
Ok so if i have the clockwork zip extracted into sdcard external using androzip which now shows recovery.img 4.7mb file in my download folder Instead of using cmd from windows laptop.
Now does moto-fastboot still apply since id be trying this from the device? Cause when u do it on a computer moto fastboot has to be in same folder as the recovery.img
What would be the proper command prompts to apply in terminal to flash the cwm recovery?
Im not all that good with adb or terminal unless i see command lines in front of me ..In the past i have rooted my old mytouch 4g when i was with tmobile right from terminal..

Update:
I Just used photon bootstrap apk to flash cwm zip..i wasnt aware that was a possibility.

Rooting my Rezound with Mac Os

Well I have finally unlock my Rezound. I I have been trying since last night to root it. I am on Android version 4 .0 .3 since version 3. 6. Software number 3. 14 .605.12 710 Rd. I am using a Mac Book to root with. My Rezound is unlocked with S on. I have read many threads about installing custom recovery and accessing custom recovery dating back to 2011. I have tried to root it through H boot by installing it in the root of my sd card and it did not work. What is the best version number and steps to use in order to root my Rezound with my mac book because I am really stuck . Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I am assuming that you already have the adb setup.
Download the recovery and rename it to well recovery then put the "recovery" file on the adb folder
Next open up terminal type "cd" then space bar and drag and drop the folder that you put the recovery file into the terminal then hit enter
Turn off fastboot on your phone and turn on usb debugging and type this into the terminal ./adb devices
If your device shows up then type this ./adb reboot bootloader
then type this ./fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
wait for it to flash then type ./fastboot reboot bootloader
Then go to the recovery then once you are in the custom recovery go down to developer options
Select Install su and superuser and wait for that to finish.
And boom your rooted and running
I have a mac also and thats what I did
If you find a way to S off on a mac let me know

Everything worked up to when I issued the command . /fastboot reboot bootloader. When I hit enter a series of commands pop up. Do I use the phone to go to recovery or is it supposed to pop up after the. /fastboot reboot bootloader line?

Should the PH98IMG.zip file be on the root of my ext. sd card when typing the line on my computer? Maybe I misunderstood some of the info that I was reading. Sorry for the questions. I am new to rooting.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
what are you doing exactly with the PH98IMG.zip file
and what exactly are you trying to do if you wanna root there is no need for the PH98IMG file
I haven't used it for anything. I just wanted to be sure that I didn't need to put any type of file in the removable sd card. I followed all of the steps including finding the developer option under recovery. From there I selected install su and superuser. It went through the steps and then I rebooted the phone as the next step . However the phone is still not rooted. Btw I am using recovery 3.16. Should I try an earlier version?

Thanks. Do I put this on my computer inside the android folder where the adb, fastboot and the recovery files are located or do I put it in the phone on the sd card?

Worked like a charm. I am now rooted. Thanks for your help. I guess I had a bad copy of su superuser. Again, thanks for all of your help.

Installing Recovery & SU on Bootloader Unlocked Device w/o cpu? Possible?

Just as the title says,I've got an HTC One & I've already unlocked the bootloader but had to give the computer I was using up before I could install recovery or SU. SO, is there any possible way to get a recovery onto my One without a computer? Then I can just flash a rooted ROM. I am also still S-ON. Thank you XDA Community!
Sent from my HTC One using Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2
I'm not super familiar with the HTC one but I believe you need to use fastboot to install a recovery, unlocking the bootloader allows you to flash to this partition. You could try to use a terminal emulator if your stock ROM supports the flash image binary but I'm doubtful it will.
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
This would be if you name the recovery image recovery.img and have it on the root of your sdcard, but can't recall if you phone has an external SD or not so check the path
Or you could try dd commands, this is more risky and I wouldn't recommend it
Really I would suggest waiting until you got to a PC that has fastboot installed on it, then in just a few minuets you could flash a recovery and ROM and be on your way
