Hi Everyone, thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
I have an International Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300), running 4.1.2 stock, rooted, bought nearly a year ago. About a month ago the phone started freezing & needing a reboot maybe once a day. In the past 2 weeks it is becoming much more frequent, however. Sometimes the phone freezes while in standby (screen off), sometimes while browsing/general usage. The only clear pattern I can see is that it always freezes around 11pm everyday. These are the troubleshooting steps I have tried:
1. I did a factory reset - no fix.
2. Flashed CM 10.1 plus Gapps to test if the problem was with the stock firmware- no fix. Same problem
3. Re-flashed the stock firmware with Kies - same problem.
4. Had a suspicion that it was one of the Google apps causing the issue - uninstalled Chrome, disabled Play Music, disabled Gmail - no fix.
5. Ran eMMC Check to see if the chip could cause the problem - it says I have an insane chip, but memory block test was successful.
6. Ran logcat at 11pm last night and it froze at the following: PowerManagerService [w] Timer Ox1->OxO | OxO. I don't know if that is relevant as I don't understand it...
I'd appreciate any help. I am at the stage where I'm thinking of sending it back to Samsung for repair, but others who have reported this problem have said that there phones have the same problem upon return.
read the freezing thread in General
I can confirm that the method here is working:

over a month not a single freeze
I ran the DFG fix, will report back
Ran the DFG fix again twice yesterday (thats around 35-40gb written so far) and no freezes in the past 24 hrs...

Ok. Problems I have encountered the 2 days I have used the phone:
Constant freeze. The first hour I used the phone it froze and rebooted 7 or 8 times.
Missing SocialLocation.apk. This caused a problem for the GPS in smart actions to work at all. Rooted phone and installed the app, and problem disappeared.
Tried to hard reset the phone because of all the rebooting problems. Guess what, on the first menu coming up where you can choose language, the phone froze and rebooted again. Now still it is constantly freezing and rebooting.
The freezing issues does not really have one specific app causing it. It can happen whenever doing whatever!
Anyone got a solution for this? Maybe a OTA update for Norwegian model?
Well, as my dad's phone is still fine as of now with not a single reboot in 2 days, I'd suggest you get in contact with your carrier and ask for a replacement. This seems to be a phone defect and you should be able to get your replacement easily. Be sure to not mention rooting and installing SocialLocation.apk though!!
You rooted and removed some files from the System, did you not?
Hey guys,
I'm hoping somebody here might have an idea for where I can start to look for this problem, I have had the SGS3 for around a year now, I put CM10 on it initially (from memory), upgraded to CM10.1 when that was released via the nightly releases and I have been running those since.
Recently I updated from a Feb / early March release (cant recall specifically which one) to the next latest (mid to late March I believe) to move from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2. I believe a little after that ( if not that day) I began to very occasionally have small lock up problems with the phone. It would lag out for a short amount of time, or would just completely lock up on the screen its on for a while (if I leave it, it can be between 30 minutes to an hour before it becomes responsive again)
Often I would need to use it so I just end up having to hold the power button in to force a reboot to clear it.
Initially I thought "ok just a bug in a nightly, that's cool, it'll be patched out soon enough", a few days later a nightly came down that fixed a notification bar drop down loop problem I was getting but this other thing has stuck around, depending on how my phone feels its occurring a lot or a little each day, generally seconds / a minute after I start to use it.
I have since jumped around on a few more CM10.1 roms and I have even reverted to the 4.2.1 roms I was using ( I still have them on the phone so I know they are the right ones) to test if its that, but now they are encountering this problem as well.
The phone is completely clear now of user data, I have done a full data clear via CWM and even the original Google "welcome" setup section has locked up more than once in my attempts to set the initial configuration of the phone....
Any thoughts? CWM etc has never had a problem so while it seems to lean toward hardware i'm still thinking its software, maybe a CM10.1 release has updated something else in the phone that's now causing problems, something more firmware related etc?
EDIT: to give some examples, just before I readded my exchange details and started to sync contacts etc, I went into contacts, opened the menu and selected "Settings" to change the first name last name sorting and it just stopped on the settings button, settings was still lit up etc but it was not responsive.
Just now (about 30 minutes later) I have pressed to turn the screen on and its on the lockscreen. Great its back I think, i'll grab the baseband / kernel etc to put in here, I slide it to the unlock and bam, frozen on that now.
more info
I had a play this morning and activated the CPU overlay etc as well as strict mode.
The phone has just done it again in the play store, however the CPU overlay shows nothing out of the ordinary and there was no screen flash to indicate a long run causing a problem.
Interestingly the cursor in the search bar for google play is still blinking, so the phone is still "alive" however i cant control it via the touchscreen or the hardware buttons.
I am trying to dump the log via ADB now however its gotten as far as finding the phone and seems to have stopped (though maybe its still going, i'll see soon hopefully)
Anybody got any ideas? This is driving me crazy and i'm not sure where to go with it now, i guess back to stock is the next option then maybe a warranty claim if thats still possible....
Log collected
Either it was still collecting or it collected after the last event in the log but i've uploaded the log to pastebin here:
http://pastebin.com/Cc20CYZH
The main thing seems to be this:
Code:
W/SQLiteConnectionPool( 6385): Requests in progress:
W/SQLiteConnectionPool( 6385): execute started 646409ms ago - running, sql="COMMIT;"
W/SQLiteConnectionPool( 6385): The connection pool for database '/data/data/com.android.email/databases/EmailProvider.db' has been unable to grant a connection to thread 237 (AsyncTask #2) with flags 0x1 for 646.44104 seconds.
W/SQLiteConnectionPool( 6385): Connections: 1 active, 0 idle, 0 available.
And also this:
Code:
W/InputEventReceiver( 3327): Attempted to finish an input event but the input event receiver has already been disposed.
FYI - that bit at the bottom of the paste about the screen turning off with timeout, the screen has now turned off but i still cant turn it back on etc, soon enough it'll probably reboot (which seems to be what it ends up doing) then it'll be ok again until a problem occurs again.
I'm currently trying a new baseband as recommended here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133401
Will post the results after a few days, fingers crossed.
Did you had the same problem on any other aosp or aokp based roms?
Or just try flashing the stock rom

I actually never ended up changing back, i flashed the new baseband as above, ran the dumm file generator app a few times (letting it lock up as it went), flashed a new rom a few times as well and after all of that it seems to have worked out all the bad sectors.
Definitely seemed like I was a victim of the beginning of the SDS problem, all due to the fact i had flashed this almost immediately after receiving it and had never updated the baseband.
For those with lock up problems, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133401 and follow that for installing the baseband, then do the dummy file generator etc, i'm back to a phone that works properly
PS - It took a few weeks after for it to find and remove all the problems, remember your actual ROM install could be written to bad sectors so i would definitely recommend after you run the dummy file generator a few times to update your ROM at least once, it was after 2-3 updates mine had completely settled down.
PPS - If the dummy file gen fills up your storage then crashes, just go to app info (drag from launcher is the easiest way to get here) and clear the data, that'll delete all the dummy data
PPPS - The dummy file gen can make your phone run terribly as it gets close to full, be patient, its not necessarily the lock up problem but even if it is you need to let it sort it out itself, restarting will make it worse not better.
Hello,
I have very bad problem. My Galaxy S3 was working very good, but about a month ago it started freezing randomly!!! , when phone freezes nothing works except power button, when pressing it about 10 seconds, the phone reboots. I have the international model (GT-I9300), but Lithuanian. The freezing lasts from 10 minutes to an infinite time. All the freezing started about a month ago, when google play started updating that iron man game. I tried all solutions provided in these forums, including using dummy file generator, factory reset and even changing roms. Nothing helped. When using dummy file geterator, the phone hasnt freezed at all, but the phone freezes randomly when opening internet, other apps or just anytime, even when phone is on stand by. I tried flashing DarkyRom 4.1.2 XXEMB1, but the phone started freezing even more, then i recovered from the Nandroid backup, and the phone is now freezing not so frequently, about 1 freeze in 1-2 days, but it STILL FREEZES, and i also have a strange "Process com.google.process.gapps has stopped working" problem. I tried every solution to this problem, but none of them works. Also, i think it is somehow connected to the freezes, because after those messages phone freezes sometimes. I dont know how to solve these super annoying problems, because i tried nearly everything, and nothing works. I think this might be a hardware issue, and that i should buy a new phone.
If you know somehing, help me!

SGS4 (GT-I9505). I installed cm-11-20141112-SNAPSHOT-M12-jflte about half a year ago, never had any (major) problems.
Then I woke up (late, because no alarm) this morning, noticed my phone was turned off. I tried turned it on and as soon as I entered the PIN it rebooted. After sometesting I found out that when wifi or data is turned on (either by turning one of them on manually or by exiting flight mode), the second I have connection (I do receive some whatsapp messages) my phone does a soft reboot.
The only thing that has changed (as far as I know) in the past couple of days: I installed Nova Battery Tester through Aptoide (downloaded here since it's no longer in the play store). I ran 3 online virus tests on the apk and limited its permissions with xprivacy, so I hope I'm safe in that regard. Plus, it was installed 3 days ago. Still, you never know. I uninstalled the apps (both Aptoide and NBT), but still get reboots.
Apparently people have similar problems with wifi-only, but the solution is usually: reset or reinstall the OS. Not really a solution, though I'm probably going to do that as well, since I don't foresee a solution soon (as in: today).
Anyway, if anyone does know of a solution -if not for me, then maybe for the next person- (or maybe can tell me to not use Nova Battery Tester), please share
tl;dr: after several months of using CM11 (snapshot M12) my SGS4 suddenly starts soft-rebooting when there is an internet connection (it works fine while in e.g. Flight mode).
Update(/bump): a factory reset got rid of the reboots.
Hello guys,
I own my Samsung Galaxy S4 I9515 (Value Edition) for about 2 years and since a few months I've been experiencing annoying issue: phone started to get restarted by itself. Sometimes it restarted just once or twice and started to work for few days, but then it restarted over and over again in the same time, like in the 'restarting loop' so I was not able to launch it in the end. Sometimes, but not always, taking the battery away helped, but few times even this didn't help as so I had to either reset the phone to factory settings (wipe) or even install the official Samsung software from scratch (using Odin for example). After such reinstallation it was working for few hours, but as soon as I managed to install all my apps it started to restart again.
Finally I decided to return the phone to official Samsung store for guarantee repair. First time, they told me the issue doesn't happen in their service so they only reinstalled the software (what I also did myself before). The same day when I got my phone back, I restored my apps from Google Play and it started to be restarting again. Because of that, I return the phone to Samsung again. This time they told me the same, that the problem didn't happen during their tests, but they advised me to buy a new battery as with the current one phone seems not to work correctly. So I bought brand new, original Samsung battery, restored my Google account on the phone again, and... It happened again, phone has restated for 10 times during one hour
Do you have any idea why may this happen? Or how can I check what is happening? Does Android store some logs somewhere to see why it crashes and restarts?
I suspected two things:
1. Memory card - I thought memory card could make it happening, as to Samsung I gave the phone without it, but I tested it yesterday with no sd card and the same happened.
2. Apps - as I mentioned before, every time I reinstall the software I add my Google Account and apps start to be installed from Google Play, and mostly after that phone starts restarting again. But how can I check that which app is causing that? On the other hand it would be weird, as I'm using my Google Account on the other Android phone with the same apps and nothing bad happens.
Maybe you have any other idea, would be appreciated, because neither me nor Samsung official service couldn't solve this issue.
Thank you in advance!
