Hi guys, ive looked all around the web trying to find a solution but i cant say i found something yet so here it is.
I have a Nokia N900 right now and as much as i like it, its getting old, so im slowly looking for a new phone.
I feel like i might have been spoiled by the N900 multitasking and i want to know if my requirement for my new are possible to have.
So here it is: Is it possible to multitask with multiple instances of some applications? Really its only for email and sms, so i can for example copy text from one email, paste it in another one that is also open at the same time and can switch back and forth between them. In other words, can i have multiple sms/email conversations opened at the same time (one conversation with bob, one with jack, one with dave...) i often have more than 10-15 of them open at the same time on my n900 and if there would be only one reason for me to keep my phone it would be that.
I looked for multitasking apps with grid view hoping it would do that but from what i see you can only have one of those apps running at once anyway and it might seem crazy but for the number of time I switch between conversations on my n900, like i would using WLM for example, this could be a major dealbreaker for me if its not possible.
I'm sorry if it looks like a stupid question or something but ive completely missed the bus regarding android/ios/bb developpement as i used wm6.5 then switched directly to maemo5 2 years ago.
no one, really?
I don't think it works this way on Android, though you just might be able to find an app that does this.
thanks for the input
Sup Neo! I too went from the N900 to a GSII and I find myself not regretting it at all. There is no TRUE multitasking like the N900, at all from what I have found.
I'm not sure if any apps have been made available for such multi tasking, but I don't think anyone here who doesn't have N900 experience will understand what we mean.
Now it just needs an N900 writer to make something happen for android. Otherwise, I do NOT regret switching over, I absolutely love the speed and freedom of my new phone. The N900 was killing me on simple tasks like sending and receiving MMS, or connecting to the internet without destroying my battery life. No regrets.

Yo. Most Android apps can support multitask on its own UNLESS the developer has puposely disable it.
iOS and Android don't run in Windows style, ie, you can open 2 Mozilla Firefox windows at the same time. Copy and paste work the same as the pc.
So I guess you would have problems in the multiple email opening thing, most phones cannot.
So my suggestion is to keep your N900 as a email phone and change to android or iPhone as your main phone.

Having two phones would suck, and I'm sure he would get over the whole multi tasking issue after a week of using the SII
But I have to say, nothing is as impressive as bouncing around from different windows, and different text messages, and different apps as much as you want.
You just can't substitute for it

Ok OK so Android does have "True" multi-tasking
I would like to see it have Multiple Visible applications running at once and accessible between each other. Maybe that's what we should say when we want to see "Real" multitasking, and not just "true" multitasking.
Once again, still satisfied, but we have a craving that we want to fill as well sometimes.
I would like to see android implement this. Webos(palm/hp) had "card style" applications windows and it was epic. That's said, I'm back to android. Just sayin

Hmm, depends what kind of multitasking you like, the one that actually let's you fully quits apps or one that is fully automated, meaning that you just use it without doing anything and still feel the multitasking, ie you press the home button and it still runs, however you may not notice it, until u use the same app again. However, this means you have to restart every night, to really close the apps, otherwise android will manage for you.
So it means that apps run indefinitely, and when you reopen the app, it will revert to what you did before, you can complete task like scanning eg those with a progress bar and you will see it filling the bar until completion even in the homescreen or other apps, and as I said, unless the developer wants to close the app when you are not using it.

That's Androids Multitasking in a Nutshell, completely understand how it works and it does work well I might add. But it's just the extra step of being able to visually locate the running apps and access them. If you look at your Task Killer for example, you see the running tasks correct? But in order to use them, you have to navigate to the app and click it, no matter where it is on your system.
What I would love to see would be more of a Click and Open option to viewing your running tasks. Sort of like a back screen when you Zoom Out of your desktop on android. The same way you can see all of your desktops, you would be able to see all of your running apps and select which one to open, or to close.

I guess there is still only one instance of every app though.

That looks very interesting, is that for ICS? Even if it were for only one instance of each app, it would be more than we have now.
I just hate going from one app, to sending a text, to opening that app again. But I am not dying without it, that's for sure

Yup I just discovered that and it works like a charm. Not a replacement but for now that will satisfy my needs.
Look, I'm not arguing with anyone here, just explaining the idea behind what us N900 users were used to and how useful it would be if implemented in android, this is all.

I suppose this is your first android phone? We're having a discussion here no worries. Yeah but if android were to use the window thing, there would be 10-20 Windows everytime. That's where the homescreen comes, just drag all your frequently used apps there and done, the so called window is done

Andriod multitasks. You can have a ton of apps open at the same time and switch between them. However you can not have more then one instance of the same app running. So while you cant open say gmail and open multiple mails in seperate frames you can still switch between say a web page and mail.
There might be so great mail apps out there that handle mail seperatly, im just not sure which would do it. Bottom line,x the android OS is more then capable of doing what you want. Someone just needs to make or find the app for your needs.

That's just it, that would be the thing I KNOW android doesn't have yet wish it did. We all know we can't have more than one instance of the same app running at once, that much is clear. But having it would be the part I crave, and I'm sure others as well.
Imagine being able to reference to a previous text with someone else whenever you want to while working on another text with someone different.
Like I said, I UNDERSTAND YOU CAN'T DO IT, I just wish you could!
and I wish people would stop explaining it to me lol, I KNOW, and I'm not asking for anyone to tell me how it works. I'm just saying, it would be nice, this is all!
also, being able to bounce from Xterm to open notepads or texts to anything, now that is how you process info on a phone. We'll never be satisfied, but for now I am.
Thanks for the replies fellas.

Can you elaborate a little more? Your question is rather vague and might be why there is no response.
see if this helps
check to see if your gps is functioning properly..... if not reinstall a kernel of your choice, and i suggest stock 1.43.... use Flash Image GUI. this might help but its just a guess. Im not sure of your statement, but i think this is what you mean. good luck, hit thanks if this helps you....

sure:
since the release of the handset HTC Desire HD I have used an app and widget called HTC locations.
amongst other things, this widget is used to replace google navigation by having offline maps in it, which, correct me if I am wrong, is very similar to the maps found in google navigation app.
I have been a bullet rom user since I bought my phone and found that the latest xboarder's version 1.7 is said to have such widget/app working... unfortunetly it does not.
I, then, decided to try my luck with the Energy rom, which I liked a lot and this time, for my frustation, the app/widget is not even there.
After researching the internet, I have found a couple of apk's (laputa, location picker, locations, footprints) and their respective signed lib files.
After flashing them (the signed files through recovery) and installing the apks, the app itself (both footprints and locations) would open, footprints all the way and locations would try to download the necessary files (which would return an error saying it couldnt finish the task or restart sense, nope, its not a problem with my connection). The widgets itself wouldnt work at all.
Back to the forum where I found those files, I figured they were for another version of sense, so the framework would be different in order to run on the Energy rom (thats what I came up with, anyway).
As I believe there would be other HTC location users in the amaze 4g forum, I started this thread asking people if they have it working on theirs and if they do, how did they manage it.
Thanks for your help.
P.S. yes, im talking about the roms for the HTC AMAZE 4G and the use of the app/widget on the HTC AMAZE 4G. I only quoted the DESIRE HD so people know the app/widget I am talking about

thats the thing I had that rom installed and eventhough the description says it works, you will see on that thread that lots of ppl say it doesnt work... x says that it works for him, I dont know if he froze the app and deleted whats inside the .data/locations or not... I am just not good enough on messing around with those files.
now back to the app, I believe I would need two files the apk for the app and the app for the widget which, if I am not mistaken, the only difference is the name that contains 3d on it...
btw, thanks so much for trying to help me.
Just rooted my phone...and I love being able to use the WiFi tether! A few questions:
1) Which of the bloatware should I remove and will it noticeably improve the performance of my phone?
2) How do I get rid of the WiFi notifications that always pop up and tell me there's WiFi nearby?
3) How do I get Sense 4.0 on this phone and what are the advantages/disadvantages of it?
Please keep in mind that I am an extreme noob and it was pretty incredible that I was actually able to root. In fact, I had to get help from a friend on it!
1) It will remove any background apps you don't need. Read up on which ones can be safe to remove.
2) While in Wi-Fi settings press menu then choose Advancedyou will see the option "Notify Me", deselect/uncheck it.
3) By flashing a Sense 4.0 rom and matching boot.img. There are a few good ones and really just as many bugs as any Sense 3.6 rom nowadays, so no need to worry on that.
If you need help, I'm only a quick PM away. I might not reply right away but I will gladly be of help.
EDIT:
Regarding your first question; flash a custom rom and not worry about bloatware.
Thanks, Snuzzo...much appreciated. Regarding #2, it was indeed unchecked. It says "Notify me, When launching apps, notify me when Wi-Fi is available"...not sure that's what I'm going for. Per your other recommendation, I'd assume flashing a custom ROM would help that.
Is there a good Sense 4.0 rom you'd recommend? Seems like I've seen that some don't jive with bluetooth...I use bluetooth a lot in my car. Also, what would you say are the benefits of 4.0 over 3.6?
I have tried them all, and so far I like Nils the best http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757357

Not being a real hardcore end user, I can't tell the difference. Worst one to ask in that respect. Checkout Hawknest's. Him and myself have been working on Eclipticrez for months now.
Quick clarification...the WiFi notification I'm getting is the one that shows up in the notifications bar at the top of the screen. Unchecking "Notify me" only keeps it from taking over my whole screen. I have unlimited data, so I'm uninterested in WiFi.
Flash NilsP rom and you wont have that problem anymore and everything works!
Ha--touche! I'll have to check that out.

Yeah, I have searched before and came up with the same answer. The notification still comes up in my status bar at the top of the screen. Also, if you choose to try a ROM that doesn't remove it, sometimes someone has a file you can flash that will remove it, such as for the ViperRez ROM. You might even ask if that file works on stock rooted if you're not ready to flash a ROM yet. Here's a link to the one made for ViperRez, you can ask in/search the thread to see if it would work on another ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786277&highlight=viperrez
But really, you might as well flash a custom ROM. I'm running ViperRez and I like it a lot but I'm not able to connect my phone as a portable player to my car and I'm not able to get my contacts into my car either. I was able to do both on stock and on a GB ROM I was running. Am going to reflash it and see if it works, or try to get it set up on stock first then reflash. Other than that I really like the ROM.
I was thinking of trying out iRezone, that seems like it might be good too.
If after you flash a custom ROM you still have that wifi icon showing just check the ROM thread and see if someone posted a fix.
Hi folks,
i just googled my ass off, thinking someone must have had the same idea that I just came up with. Unfortunately to no avail.
Is it possible to run some of the stock kindle apps on other devices?
The reason I'm askin is that I just saw my dad usin his KFHD7 calendar application and I liked it better than any other calendar app I've seen for Android.
Could anyone provide me with an apk? Does the kindle even use APKs for its stock apps? My father is unfortunately not a root-guy, so I cannot get the files from him. I'd really like to try it on my Asus tablet and on my HTC One X which both have similar display resolutions.
Thank you very much in advance guys, really appreciate your efforts.:good:

edit2: Jeeeezz, seems as if my provider is slowing down media fire on purpose. couldn't even load the webpage on my pc. had to use my phone to get there. now the download of 10ish mb is taking ages. i hate it. 81% and pending /rant
OK. The file finally arrived.
The good thing is: My question's answered now.
The bad thing is: The answer is 'no'.
App FCs instantly, no matter if it's installed by tapping it or if it's put into /system/app with appropriate permissions.
Tried it on an HTC OneX with a custom Jelly Bean Mod. Could install it, couldn't start it.
Tried it on an Asus Transformer TF101 with Stock ICS. Couldn't install it at all (package name already in use).
Thank you for your quick help guys!

@persano: I'm afraid I don't really get what you're trying to bring across - are you saying you backuped your kindle-apks and could provide me with the calendar? I'm not sure...

Hi, first post on XDA, and never used android before! Liking it so far, but have a couple of questions and would have a couple of questions.
I am using an HTC One (from Rogers wireless in canada, apologies if i posted in the wrong section, couldn't find a section for this phone). I came from using an iPhone, so naturally somethings are very different. I am not rooted, and currently using Nova Launcher free. Would like to stay un-rooted.
My first question is regarding the email notifications for the stock email app (not gmail). When I receive an email, in the notification drop down, there isnt a preview for the email, it only lists my email account, and "new email" underneath it. Any possible way to have it show a short mail preview, similar to iOS using the above launcher and stock firmware (4.1.2)?
The other question I had was if there is any possible way to set up a geo-fence which would enable a preset passcode to be used when i leave my house, and then disable passcodes when i arrive back home?
any help would be great, or if there is a similar thread already.
Thanks!!

I use the default mail app and I get a small preview as you call it (see attachment), But I'm on 4.2.2 not sure if that was introduced with the update or not.
As for the Geo- fence you can accomplish this with NFC Tags or an app called Tasker would allow you to setup your phone to do this.
I also came from an iPhone 4S I'll never go back

I'm trying out automateIt, but I can't seem to get it to activate my trigger. Using the WiFi connected trigger to disable screen lock, but having a hard time getting it working. Any ideas?
