I've had my GN2 for 6 and a half months and all of a sudden I started getting a small message at the bottom of the screen that said "Refreshing Sim data". I've got it 3 times in the past 15 minutes. After a reboot it stopped. Any ideas? Someone suggested a network update. I'm on Verizon.

Similar thread, same issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314737
Here was my response on that one:
My wife's S3, which is pure stock and has never been altered in ANY way and my JB N2 started doing this a few weeks ago. She swung into the local VZW store and asked about it, and according to them, "It is doing that as it is searching for networks/towers, we are currently doing upgrades on towers in your area and you may notice your phone going from No Service to 3G or 4G and Refreshing Sim Data periodically during this period." The whole time we were in town they behaved. As soon as we got back home my JB Note 2 and her stock S3 continued doing that; for about a week they would do that at home but in town (30 miles away) they were fine. Finally they just randomly stopped (I'm assuming VZW got done with whatever they were doing). Not sure if that is the same cause for yours or any of the others reported.

That dovetails with the "network update" suggestion I got. Not sure if my reboot stopped being that the messages stopped after my reboot, or Verizon completed update work, or both. But thanks for the info.

I just received the following text message from Alltel:
"FREE ALLTEL MSG:
Update your phone May 18:
Dial *228 + SEND, option 1, wait for msg,
turn phone off & on.
Visit alltel.com/systemupdates for more info."
and after doing that my cell signal sucks, on an average i get 1-2 bars.
I was on another forum asking for help, and i was instructed to try an older PRL that didn't help, and i was told to try going to
Go to Start> settings > click on phone >
services tab > select "Network Services" and press "get settings" button
and clicking on "selecting roaming only"
that didn't make the signal any better or were the signal used to be.
I think it has something to do with Verizon and alltel merging.
can anybody think of anything else that might help before i call tech support and see what they can do for me
Thanks Chris
not sure how to help but i didnt get that message and im on altell to. I won't update if it does tell me to
it was an update from alltel..... i only get 1-2 bars about 75% of were ever i go
well this whole thing sucks !....my best buddy usually calls me every night on his way home from work, he hasn't called me all week.........so i called him tonight and asked if he has called me this week.......ya been trying to call you all week and it goes straight to voice mail with out even ringing....
and Ive been waiting back on a job offer, wonder why the company hasn't called me back yet..
im ****ing pissed !
*228 and option 1 is to activate your phone.. try doing it again and if that doesnt work try doing the update ur phones roaming service option. What PRL is your phone running (settings -> system -> device info) mine just updated to 30040 from 30039 what fixed many signal issues at my apartment. you can roll back ur prl also if you wish but you would have to find some one with the previous prl. too bad corolada stopped updating their site http://corolada.com/prl/
anyone want to off load 30039 or upload a copy of the prl file i lost mine - also any one want to offload and uplaod 30040 and i can see what towers they removed
Make the loooooong storie short, after talking to 8 different techs, the 7th sent me out a refurbished phone, telling me that MIGHT fix my signal problem, and if it doesn't we will go from their, well i got the new phone yesterday and lets take bets on how great the problem was fixed..............back on the phone again with advance tech, thier sending somebody to drive thru my neighborhood to check for signal problems, and i will get a call or text from alltel on the solution to the problem.........so wince the 15th of this month till the problem is resolved, tech said 7-10 days, the MOST signal bars Ive had is 3 once....i told him, you ARE going to credit me my account from the 15th to when ever i get satisfactory cell signal, since my parents have be loyal alltel customs for close to 10 years or you can eat from contract !
Ya im in a great mood
well as far as updates on the problem, i had some lady from alltel call me and pretty much ask for the same information that Ive already given, We will be sending somebody out thru your neighborhood to see if their are tower / signal problems and we will get back with you, lady i can save your guy gas money and tell you their is a signal problem !
and what about me not having a signal or at the most 2 bars of service since hte 15 of this month and still having to pay for the signal lose, im not paying for a phone that can only be used as a boat anchor, ummm sir your going to have to take that up with customer service,
ERRRRRR
UPDATED !!!
called tech support to get an update on my claim ticket number, to see whats going on with my problem..............Please just wait, we are working on the problem....ERRRRRRRR
SO everybody that has had signal service since the 15th of this month, suck a nut
just put on a older PRL they usually release a new one 1x a month recently so u might be f-ed for about a month
i tired that after like the 1-2 day and a couple days ago and nothing.....
Thanks for the advice tho

Answerman keeps a decent list of updated Alltel PRLs... you may want to try there: http://www.the-answerman.com/sidlist/prl/index.asp

Answerman's prl
Try the 40049 prl. I know its for special devices but it worked for me. I was having the same problem.
didn't make a bit of difference lol
Thanks for your help tho
I have had this problem for about a month now. Until then (from July last year) everything was fine. I dial, and then phone says "Dialing" for approximately 2 seconds, and then says "Call Ended".
This is driving me crazy. I got a new SIM card because I read somewhere that the SIM card may be the problem. But it didn't help.
Once or twice have I had the situation where it says dialing, but never seems to dial, stays there for a long time, and then disappears.
The thing that I've also noticed is that if I go away from my home it does not fail.
This weekend I drove approximately 40 miles. I made maybe 20 calls because I was testing my phone. Every one was successful.
It seems that if I leave this particular area it works great. As soon as I get close to my house again, failed calls.
Any suggestions? it seems like a network problem, but my wife's phone never fails here. It is a different phone by the way.
I have seen a few posts about this, mostly in the T-Mobile vibrant forum, but no real solution, except getting a different brand. My experience with it working better away from my home leads me to believe it is a network problem, but after reading that people have had 3 different replacement phones, 4 different SIM cards, etc. I'm beginning to think that this phone has a serious problem.
Yes, although I said it once already, THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS!
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
I have found this happens on all makes and models, etc. I sell cell phones for a living (worked for a couple carriers, both GSM and CDMA). There are many causes, making a cell phone call is a super complicated operation. Most likely, your home tower is experiencing on a regular basis very high traffic loads or has some other issue. Luckily, for you, it is in all likely hood simply an outbound issue and will not and does not affect incoming calls, etc. Sadly, you just need to sort of live with it and accept that (no matter the carrier, btw) there are going to be issues like this.

I know that a call will failr every once in a while, but I have 1/3 to 1/2 of my calls failing, and it never used to happen. I have thought that maybe this area has high traffic. Although you would think the network would be good here, since there is a T-Mobile store within a mile of my house.
And I never had a problem in 6 years, until the last month or so. And my wife's phone never drops calls here.
I will continue to try and figure this out.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am trying to think of any changes that I have made to my phone recently, anything.
Thanks.

I'm new here and I came here after replacing my phone 3 times for the same thing + not being able to receive calls.
Sometimes the wife would call me and the phone won't register the call and I’ll receive the VM and hour later!
Lord knows the grief I get when I don’t answer!!!
I’ve replaced SIM 4 times; TM has done “trouble ticket” to check the towers! (Notice the s in tower)
It seems it’s just this phone, I’ve used her Garminfone and worked fine.
Used her old G1 and also worked fine!!!
I’ve since rooted and used a ROM to see if that helps!
One thing for sure, these “cooked up” ROM’s that are available here are 10 times better then the crap that most manufactures puts out!
I will never buy a Samsung phone again!!!
Rebooted my TBolt and when it started up it popped a big lock screen message about the SIM card not being recognized. Phone booted up rest of the way anyways, but kept popping that warning occasionally.
Rebooted again and it seems to have gone away.
Just curious if this is just a fluke or the sign of something worse to come.
Any one else seen this behavior?
Keep in mind, this is a VZW 4G sim that they installed 10 weeks ago and never had any problems with...no attempt to do anything like use some 3G AT&T SIM, etc, etc.
I noticed this behavior for the first time today, right after I rebooted as well. I immediately tried calling my Google Voice number (didn't want to try calling a friend) and it went through, so I'm not sure if the error message is valid or not.
considering this phone has some of the same insides as the hd7, that does not suprise me.
I get the error occasionally of no sim on my hd7 and reboot always makes it go away. Happened maybe 4-5 times since November.
Thanks for the replies. Only three one time so far, so probably nothing to worry about based on both your experiences.

Have you reactivated a 3g phone on your account? This voids the 4g sim.
THUNDERBOLT
Had my note for a week and it would never work right on any AT&T hotspots. It would connect but I would get a notification that the connection failed, basically it seems that the authentication failed as I would get no data despite still showing connected in wifi connections. They gave me a new sim along with about 2 hours of wasted time doing other crap. They eventually put my sim in another handset and it worked. Come to find out that 4 other people have had the same problem in the past couple weeks with their Note. One of which was there at same time and his started working about ten minutes after a sim swap. The other two both got new phones like I did. Something you guys may want to check out, especially if within the 30 days. I spent the past week skimming through and installing apps suggested apps, time to start over.

UGGGHHHHHHH I hate when I click "Thanks" instead of Quote. Ugh.
Anyway, so they swapped your phone when they just needed to swap the SIM? Brilliant...

First, thansk for the thank anyways!
Second, No I did need a new phone. They swapped my SIM with no change. The one guy got a sim swap and it worked for him. Took awhole new phone for me. But I'm big on getting what I pay for. They used the free wifi as a selling point. I will very rarely use it, but first night there I was at McDs and got a connection failed notice. If i'm paying for it, it'll work one way or the other, especially now that I dont have unlimited data.
Just because it connects to a wifi spot doesn't mean you get internet right away. You still need to open up a browser and confirm to their terms and conditions before the internet works.
Yea I know, it wouldnt do that though. The browser tried to connect and got nowhere. The key to the authentication fail is that network connections showed it connected but the ATT notification said connection failed. This is the safeguard that keeps all but ATT devices off the network, a function of a implicit deny rule.
This is prob meant for another thread but they really need to make those ATT Hotspots recognize that you're on an ATT phone and auto connect without having to hit accept on the Terms and Conditions. I have times when my mother and aunt are at a Starbucks and they'd call me saying they're on the wifi but it's not working. I gotta keep telling them to open up a browser and hit accept on the terms and conditions.
BTW, does anyone know if you nuke/freeze the AT&T Hotspots app, does this prevent you from using ATT Free wifi?

I've never had to accept any Terms and Conditions on an AT&T device at an AT&T hotspot. If I go to Starbucks, the phone connects without any prompting and gains access, a little AT&T hotspot indicator appears in the notification bar. If I try to connect with my laptop or a non-AT&T phone, I have to accept Terms and Conditions.
I also had to exchange my Note this week, after about 10 days of use. The phone was in the car holder and it rebooted. It then started boot looping where it would display the Samsung splash logo, and then reboot. It would not go into Recovery, though would go into Download mode. AT&T tried to reset it for 20 minutes and then gave up and gave me a new phone.
Within the last week, I downloaded and installed the latest update for the Sprint S9+ (ARG7). Before getting the update, Calling Plus was working fine. The transition from wifi to data during a call worked great. After taking the update, CP is hit and miss. Sometimes it's enabled, sometimes it isn't. It usually only enables itself while on wifi. When on a call and leaving wifi, CP completely drops and the call drops. Is anyone else having this issue? If so, how did you fix it? I'm really hoping I won't have to reset my phone.
It all makes sense now.... I've been on the phone with Sprint and Samsung the least few days and nobody can figure out why. They wiped and reinstalled everything... Still nothing... Went today to Sprint and they gave me another sim card.... Still don't work.... So I just looked up online and see that Sprint is doing away with calling plus and finally getting voilp..... And the technician said that Sprint was discontinuing calling plus

I ended up resetting my phone and it fixed it at that time. I still randomly have Calling Plus crap out. No idea why it's happening still. Sprint is indeed doing away with Calling Plus in favor of VoLTE. People have been saying don't take the update for your phone for VoLTE of you're not in a soft launch market.
