Touchwiz Vs. AOSP - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

This is it, touchwiz vs aosp. Its all about who can make the best claim.
If so, what roms are you using? I've tried them all and i can't decide!!!!
here are my thoughts...
touchwiz, everything works but i dont care for anything.
aosp.... I like having all the extra stuff and dont have to customize anything.
-----
roms i liked were hyperdrive, cleanrom, liquid, aokp, cm10.1

I use CM10 on mine for one reason PDroid. I use Open-PDroid with AFWall+ and Adfree. Can have ultimate control of my phone. I really don't care about the gimmicks (Air touch, etc) Played with them for the first hour I had my phone, then rooted, ROM'd and moved on.

I like Touch Wiz. Coming from aokp, I'm bored with aosp (stilll like aokp), and the nav bar on the s4 (and s3) is goofy imo. TW is a nice change and it's clean. With tw what do you need to customize? A battery icon is about all, It's all done for you imo...of course, I'm using CLEAN 1.3, but to each his own...

I would like to try aosp but last I heard they were still having issues with GPS and Bluetooth. I like my phone to function fully. Once that's ironed out I'll make the switch.

Well ive tried them all... and i dont care to customize. i am getting bored with aosp as well. im gonna try out beans to say ive tried them all... but might just stick to cleanrom which has always been my go to rom.

I'm running clean rom and I love it. Since I'm on Verizon it added the wifi toggle and got rid of a ****load of bloatware. Then I just used file explorer and finished the rest of myself. I like the samsung apps so I don't want a rom that gets rid of them

im getting pretty set on TW, but now im thinking jelly beans or cleanrom. but who knows

I like aosp simply because touchwiz looks hideous

After rooting my s3 and playing with Touchwiz and AOSP I've opted to keep my S4 stock and have yet to root the device. I can use Nova Launcher and use a few other programs to get the AOSP look I need. Plus I have the added benefit of the camera features and no GPS issues. We'll see if the AOSP ROM for the Nexus Edition S4 helps with those issues but until then... It's TW for me.

I wouldn't call it hideous. It just lacks eye candy. I used to like aosp alot but it never changes and looks the same. I'm bored of all the themes for it too aosp is insanely fast on this device and If the IR blaster is implemented someday, I'll leave aosp on my phone for more than 15 minutes

agreed. TW does look very cartoonish, but i got bored of aosp. im happy to be back on android though.... i was on apple for a few months.

After having smart stay, air gesture, and the ir remote, I won't go to AOSP based roms until they add those options. I can make TW look better by theming it.

thanx.

I typically run AOKP, but bounce around between the AOSPs a bit. I wasn't minding TW on this device so much, especially with some of the cool tweaks, but I cannot stand having both the quick toggles (which are way too huge) and the toggles page.
Weird as it is... the clunkyness of the notifications pull down is probably what makes TW a non-contender for me.
Edit: Oh, and some weird Bluetooth issue between the S4 and my car that only exists with TW and causes skipping in the sound unless I make a phone call first... lol.

why CM and AOSP theme are more beautiful than touchwiz themes

hey guys i envy the cm and aosp themes as they are really beautiful compared to the boring Samsung touch wiz themes,
black exodus theme looks so cool wish it worked on Samsung touch wiz
Why envy? Just flash CM or AOSP then u get want you want. Right?

Because AOSP sucks. Force closes everywhere, almost unusable touch sensitivity. Themes don't apply everywhere anyway, if you really need good looks I'd say MIUI is the only way to go. I can deal with all of the above but definitely not shiitty touch sensitivity. TW roms tend to be a lot better in that regard, so I'm stuck there until they fix the shiitty sensitivity that ICS and JB have (JB is a bit better), with the next android version.

Lol it's popular because they are a very efficient team, known for making the most stable of roms for AOSP. If you compare CM to almost ANY random hacked up TW rom they're probably about just as stable. If you compare TW to any hacked up AOSP rom it's definitely not the same... But yeah, na do some research corey touch sensitivity is soo shiitty on AOSP ICS. I noticed it the second I flashed CM9, and then even more noticible on other AOSP ICS roms. A kernel's senstivity can only change so much...it doesn't change touch response though.

I've not noticed but to be fair I haven't used CM9 since my S2, and maybe its changed but my last experience was quite pleasant. And I'm just thinking out loud here, but if it was so crappy it probably wouldn't get the attention it gets. After all I think you are the first person I've seen complain about AOSP being sh**** and poor touch sensitivity. To each his own I guess.

Lol yeah na I'm just being over-critical but for real it's terrible for me. It is popular because it is a very good rom, but despite all the good aspects it provides and has, it makes MY user experience a lot worse than it was on GB, so I have to knock it. It's gotten a hell of a lot smoother, but there's nothing they can do about AOSP ICS' touch sensitivity.

I have good sir! I'm one of those people that flashes and tries everything, waiting for the perfect rom and always looking to see what's new and good. I've tried all 6 or so of the JB previews. CM10 is the best IMO, and it has been improved a bunch, it is now on par with TW ICS imo, but that does not make it nearly as good as GB's touch sensitivity was.

Even though the styling sucks and there are less options, I can use my phone again without restraint . Now just waiting for Key Lime Pie MIUI

I think you're being unfair calling AOSP **** and the like. Of course AOSP-based ROMs aren't running so good since it's not that easy getting everything to work.
The CM team don't even have the jellybean kernel source code from Samsung or the proprietary drives to make everything behave like the stock Samsung firmware.

beans vs cleanrom

I have been running cleanrom 3.5 for a few weeks and have been very happy. Tonight I'm either going to flash beans 5 or cleanrom 4. Any advice as to what's more stable and smooth? I think the features are pretty similar aside from the aosp theme of beans.

If you want more of an AOSP look to your Note 2, then Beans is the way to go -- he themes his ROM's to give you that AOSP look.
CleanROM is not themed, but very light weight in terms of removed bloatware and other tweaks that the dev has done to the ROM.
I prefer CleanROM since I'm not really a big fan of the AOSP look/feel (I know.. I'm in the minority here).
But as others have said, you can't go wrong with either ROM, they are fantastic. I'm just hoping some of the themer's out there come to this phone as they did on the S3.

I don't know. I am the only member with a Note 2 and the abuse seen from some people lately has put off other members. The sense of entitlement from the Android community chases off more talent than anything else.
So, I won't say no, but will leave it as a fading hope, that is still in 'maybe' status but could change to a resounding 'NO'.

I've seen a lot of devs stop releasing stuff because of all the bs. I wish most devs would just post a "this is my rom, take it or leave it but don't B!TCH!" and just release it as they built it for themselves and let others create mods instead of trying to cater to everyone.

Is it worth it to flash a new rom?

I was thinking about getting the CyanogenMod 10 Rom over the stock factory one, but I'm not sure if its worth it. It would get rid of your apps for the S-Pen, and maybe some other apps that are useful that I am not aware of. Would anyone say it's worth it?

That depends on what YOU want.
In general, it's obviously worth it or the developers wouldn't spend so much time working on it because there would be no interest, and users wouldn't donate their money to the developers for their work.
If you prefer the touchwiz aspects of the device then flash a TW ROM or stay stock.
I switch back and forth.

This is precisely what I meant by it depends on what you want.
I can live without s pen, it wasn't a selling point for me and I hardly use it. I use multi view more than s pen, and although it's convenient I don't have to have it.
I like the aosp ROMs for the kill app feature, my choice of themes due to the theme engine, and the many on the fly options.

Definitely a personal choice that depends a lot on your wants and needs. Even bone stock the note 2 is a great phone...a custom ROM just makes it that much better by adding some features that don't come stock. That said, for your first flash I would ease into it with something TouchWiz based like Beans, Clean, etc. See how much you like/use the touchwiz features and then you can decide if you want to try an AOSP ROM.

Sorry, I am still a newb, but which ROM lets you keep stock roms? And which did you guys say is the best for you and why?
"Best" is going to be hard to answer...they all offer some great stuff (and honestly a lot of the features overlap so there isn't a massive difference between them). The Touchwiz based ROMs include Beans, CleanROM, Eclipse, Tweaked and maybe a couple of others I am forgetting. Those will all maintain the Samsung features (S-pen, multi-window, smart stay, etc). I've run Beans and Clean on the Note and both Eclipse and Tweaked on the Charge. All have great dev support and you probably can't go wrong with any of them. Beans seems to have the biggest following based on the threads and as it is my daily driver I would recommend it.

I think you need to rephrase your first question.
The term best is relative. I I like CleanROM because it's 4.1.2 and built of of the international version.
I like Eclipse due to the black themed Gmail and play store.
I like beans because it's more like stock Verizon.
I like Carbon and Rootbox because they're 4.2.2, have features that we can't have on touchwiz ROMs like those above, but you lose the touchwiz only functions.
Personally, I have found myself drifting more and more towards AOSP. I got this phone a little more than a month ago and rooted it in the first week, mainly because I wanted my choice of apps in the multiwindow. I first went with Scott's CleanRom VZW SE, which is pretty much exactly the same as the stock rom with a few improvements. Then I jumped to the CleanRom ACE, which is based of the international version of the Note 2 (which runs 4.1.2), but is still stock TouchWiz. Then I flashed Beans 10, which as many have said here is TouchWiz with some AOSP theming. For the complete AOSP look, I also chose to get Nova Launcher and Widget Locker. And just today, I downloaded CarbonRom, which is 100% AOSP 4.2.2, and I am about to flash.
I realized that the only TW feature I really use is the popup browser. I don't really use the S Pen or any other features, but I am definitely making a backup in case I end up missing more than I anticipated.
Honestly, the best rom I have used so far is CleanRom ACE. The support is great, and to be honest you probably won't need it, since the stability of this thing is awesome. The only issue I had with it was that group messaging does not work properly. I was just feeling the call of the holo theme, so that's why I left. I do not doubt that I will eventually return to the ACE.
The note2 was my first rom flashing. I went with Beans 10. I have not had the any of the problems I've seen others have. I use the s-pen and like the additional programs in multi-view. Could I have lived without flashing a different rom? Of course but I figured with all the power the note2 has why not try to take full advantage.
Make sure you follow the instructions and I have found most members are willing to help.

What is your setup?

So been thinking about trying a custom rom but not really sure since there isn't much to pick from so I'm looking to see what everyone else is doing and how they like what they are getting from there current setup?
I would just give it a week or so and I'm sure some more stable releases will come out

shockingly I'm using TouchWiz. My only complaints with it are the inability to flick away desktop icons, no play store in the top right corner, and the folders are annoying. Why not just leave the stock folder function?
I use Apex Launcher overtop of TW which gives me the customization i want but still maintains all the Samsung functionality that is really pretty cool. After coming from AOSP Roms on my Gnex, its kind of a nice change of pace.
I rooted and removed some bloatware and verizon stuff I knew I didn't need.
Installed novalauncher and called it a day. I plan to stay with the stock kernel. I might be a little jaded coming from having to reformat my last few phones every few months once I started flashing roms.
I am completely stock, no root yet. Just testing her out to see if I am going to keep it first. Battery life and signal issues plagued my last two phones, so those are what I'm testing. So far so good.
Can someone explain what TouchWiz is? I don't see it anywhere on my S4. I'm coming from a Thunderbolt.

Rooted but still on stock ROM, using GoLauncher on top of TouchWiz, Swiftkey dark theme keyboard, haven't removed/frozen bloat yet (but will soon, just rooted yesterday). I'll be eventually loading a custom ROM but waiting out the alpha/beta builds.
Really enjoying the two finger swiping/gestures, though i don't use them much. Comes in handy on the notification bar for quick toggles, and Toucher is a pretty cool app especially when themed properly.
Not a fan of all the notification clutter, but thats just my OCD kicking in.
SmartStay/SmartScroll stopped working after day one, not sure why, but seems kind of a hokey feature anyway...
I agree, the tweaked folders are annoying, enjoyed my previous ICS folders using DeckReloaded on my EVO.

So I tried it. It booted into the OS just fine, but the phone process was force closing so bad I couldn't get though the setup. I would type a character then it would freeze. Just lost patience, lol. I had backed up my APN but could not get through the setup to restore it.
But what this tells us is that porting ROMs will potentially be pretty easy.

Going to take another shot...I replaced the apn config file.
And if it does not work we have hyperdrive to play with.
Edit: still the same deal. trying Darthstalker. wonder I need to try a spring (cdma) rom?
Has anyone tried hyperdrive rom yet?

So been thinking about trying a custom rom but not really sure since there isn't much to pick from so I'm looking to see what everyone else is doing and how they like what they are getting from there current setup?

Can u advice some stable release?

So what ROM is everyone running?

I'm thinking of jumping to the CM nightles, but the new LOTK Rom seems pretty sweet as well.
I've also been thinking of trying out the cleaned up TW ROMs (cleanROM and Hyperdrive). Not really sure what Hyperdrive is, though....
so, yeah. What ROM are you using? Pros, cons?
Running the Jellybeans rom . Everything is running great no issues at all.
I'm running Hyperdrive. Love this ROM!!! I'm also running it on my Note 10.1 and ran it on my SG3. Super smooth and lots of customization options.
Hyperdrive here too.......lots of options to tweak and runs smooth as buttah!
Tried a couple
I tried CM Nightly and AOKP yesterday (both based on stock Android). Both seemed like they were getting close to good daily driver. I'm looking for something based on stock. Both seemed to have GPS issues and AOKP had camera issues as well. I really liked the features on AOKP. (I used to run AOKP on previous phone a GNex). I'll be trying AOKP again soon to see if some of those issues are fixed.
What I really want (may be fantasy) is a stock (or at least stock looking) rom that still has IR blaster, Pedometer & maybe some of the camera features. I also want (again, maybe fantasy) a rom that allows super easy transfer of apps and app data to SD. Right now it looks complicated to transfer and maintain apps on the SD card, especially if one flashes new roms often.

Which rom is this? does it require anothr kernel?
roms
I have run gruesome, hyper drive and beans. ( I think I am an addict. ) they are all really cool. I love the one button kill which is in both gruesome and hyperdrive. beans is also very nice with full blocking mode enabled in one of the framework mods . beans lacks the one button kill though. I have run the faux kernel against all of these a recommend that. I would like to try clean rom next then some of the original development. I love some of the TW fluff. Having said all that, I tried the gruesome wolf rom first so it had to be changed to try more. but I would have probably stuck with it. it was super stable and I am new at this but the thread is super quiet. my money is that their release three will be dope.

I believe the dev recommended on of the two mod kernels. but I ran it without as well. I loved it with faux
I'm on the stock rom. Rooted and flashed a few mods (and added toggles). It's perfect for me and I never lost any data (didn't have to wipe) or apps.
cm nightlies running great for me

Using CleanRom 1.1 with Ktoons kernel. If I play it right I think I can get about 6hrs of screen on time.

I am also using 'Beans' Rom. Fantastic so far. Flashed it with ktoonsez' kernel and it flies. No issues at all. I like to put Nova launcher on it to get that stock vanilla feel while still having the features and functionality of TouchWiz. Dev did a great job debloating the rom as well. All the useless apps Samsung put on the phone (amazon, trip advisor, etc) were removed. Also the ongoing wifi notification icon is gone which really bugged the crap out of me. All in all, best rom on my GS4 so far. Highly recommended. :good::highfive:
Hyperdrive here damn rom is beast. I'm having np here been my dd since release

I'm watching that thread, but waiting for it to get out a few releases first. I've seen PA in various other areas of XDA (for use on other phones) so I'm confident that its going to be a great ROM even though I haven't personally used it.
With that being said, right now I'm on rooted stock but once Hyperdrive RC3 is released I'll be flashing that (still need to figure out what kernel is recommended)!
I'm currently using CM. It's good so far. I'd be using Hyperdrive, but I get stuck on boot (Samsung Galaxy S4 logo, no padlock). I'm happy with it though, it's a great rom. Spend a day with each rom that seems interesting to you before you make up your mind on what you want to use.
CM is the only ROM I run. I love it.

I'd love me some somewhat-stock Android (CM or AOKP) but I just love some of the TouchWiz features too much. I don't use any of the gimmicky stuff, but the camera really has some nice things that stock can't even come close to touching.
Hyperdrive ROM for me
