Hard Bricked SGS3 GT I9300 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi friends
Iv been a long time reader on xda forums and have always found answers to my queries.
My brother tried flashing a rom but unfortunatley he flashed the wrong rom for his device which resulted in his phone to become hard bricked. no download mode or recovery mode. been doing some reading on the forum and it seems that i might be in for a chance to revive the phone with the UnBrickable SD necromancy mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2023069 thanks to Adam. i have followed the steps which he has outlined, iv disassembled the phone, flashed my sd card with the image file and placed it into the phone. Now this is where im stuck. do i need some sort of a jig to power on the phone or can i use a usb cable attached to my laptop for power? also does the battery have to be connected? iv tried the above but im not getting any response it seems. i short the resistor with tweezers and let go after a couple of seconds from pressing the power button but no response.
i would have posted this in the above link but my post count is low
can someone please point me in the right direction
thanks

How would any operation be possible without a connected power source? Rig the battery to the motherboard before you start, otherwise nothing could happen. The process sounds like a desperate long shot to me, but you've got nothing to lose I suppose.

[Q] I messed up please help :)

So I was flashing my phone with odin and I really messed up and accidentally flashed it with the captivate software not the fascinate software the phone would try to turn on and would show the att loading screen and just kept looping to that screen. I tried to put it back in download mode and it wouldnt work so I read that I should let the battery completely die and try again. I did that and now the phone will not power on at all the screen stays black no matter what key combination I press. I tried holding vol+, vol-, and power; I tried vol- and power, i tried both with the cable plugged in before and after a battery pull, and tried them both without it being plugged in before and after a battery pull. the phone is generating some sort of heat so i know the charger is plugged in properly, (i tested the charger with a samsung infuse and it charges fine so i know the charging cable is working properly). So my question is how do i get it back into download mode so I can flash the proper stock software with odin? all help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! thank you in advance!

Not positive, I've only used Heimdall to change the boot logo, but its good reading and likely has your answers.

thank you! im willing to do the work and research and figure it out!! i use a mac so i am familiar with Heimdall! Ill try what it says, Ill post my results. thanks again for your direction and willing to help a newbie
So I carefully read that post, I'm using a fully charged battery from my friends epic phone, I can't get the phone into download mode and what is ever more strange is that when I press the power button when the phone is NOT plugged into a usb port the phone will show the "att world phone" splash screen, and it will loop boot that image over and over. However, whenever I plug it into a usb cable hooked up to a laptop the phone will go back to a blank black screen and stay that way. Then I will push any key seuqence and I can't get the phone into download mode for the life of me anyone know another way to get into download mode on a samsung fascinate accidentally flashed with a samsung captivate firmware? Once again all help is greatly appreciated
Actually I realized the microusb cable I was using didnt come with the fascinate and the port on the fascinate is oddly shaped so the cable I was using wasnt truly connected, so what happens now with a solid connection to a microusb cable the phone goes to the black screen and will stay that way regardless of what key combinations I hold down. I can even pull the battery and put it back in all while being plugged into the computer and the screen stays black however, when I unplug the phone from the microusb cable the phone will immediately show the "att world phone" splash screen, and continue to loop boot back to that splash screen. Its very strange, someone please help
The usb pinouts are fascinate specific, are you using the stock samsung cable?
Find the download mode jig. Normal download mode methods won't work for you anymore that you're on att firmware. If you're lucky, you can fix it.
Well, let's review........so far you flashed captivate software onto your fascinate, then you thought putting the battery from the epic in your phone might help......I think the next step is definitely to see if putting a hard shell case for the vibrant on your phone will help. May as well cover the entire galaxy s line.
On a serious note, listen to imnuts' advice. It's your only chance.
^ lol you're in good hands good luck

Micro USB is Micro USB unless specified by the manufacturer. Might wanna do some research before you make your fourth post on this forum with false information.

That's for putting the phone into download mode, not usage of the Micro USB cable. Yes, the port on the phone side has a specific pinout, but the cable itself doesn't.
Love this site, info abounds... Just saw a thread about manually jumping the pins w/a series of resistors. Common sense, but I'd trust the soldering better than my fingers lol. On a lighter note, I think it was only 3 bad ideas... w/ imnuts and shark, he is in good hands.
hey landshark68, i used the battery from my friends epic because the battery from my fascinate would not charge in my fascinate no matter what, so I had to use another battery to even get the phone to do anything, I'm sure you make a lot of friends assuming that everyone is less intelligent than you

It was a joke about piecing things together from all the different galaxy s phones.
lol sorry man, its just frustrating that i havent been able to use my phone and it makes me sad sorry to take it out on you
Did you try this to get in download mode: " If you can't get into download mode with your phone plugged into your PC, unplug usb from PC and plug it into the wall outlet, and try to put it into download mode there. When It goes into download mode, unplug usb from adapter, plug it into PC and put it into download mode, This does work."
it doesnt go into download mode no matter what ive tried all different key combinations used for any galaxy phone and it just loops the "att world phone" splash screen, has anyone else ever accidentally flashed a phone with the wrong model's software before? or am i the only one that is that silly lol
Imnuts is right. And Landshark, while sarcastic, is both right AND funny. Google captivate download jig, (evidently this works for all galaxy s models) read some, go to radio shack, get a (or some more likely) resistor(s), make sure they add up to 301 kohm (again, verify w/ xda post on building a jig, going on what I read last night) and hope you didn't flash yourself a mini att billboard.
or buy one on amazon. 9.99 search galaxy dongle jig. Good luck, since you get some boot activity, it looks like there is some hope.
There is a good chance the download mode jig will work for you based on what you have said. However, it is your ONLY option and last resort at this point if the other download mode methods have failed.

Dead vibrant, nothing on screen, no DMode! Help!!

Hi,
I'm going to keep it as short as I can, just bought a vibrant and rooted in a nice way, then I tried to use odin to update from 2.1 to 2.2, it did it but then the screen goes black and it doesn't shows anything and when i say anything I really mean it, no battery when I plug it, and no brick message. Then I discovered that I used the wrong image to try and update it the one for the i9000
note:
i tried to put it on download mode, but as i said before it doesn't do anything is literally dead it, i think I'm going out of options i got no idea what to do anymore, PLZ SOMEONE GIVE ME SOME HOPE!!!
Two options
1) Go to radio shack, spend a few bucks and build a custom USB jig that will get you into download mode. The thread is here somewhere in the forums, search for it.
2) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1277056
UnBrickable Mod is awesome! It's easier to upload download mode with a click then to hold buttons.

I did one myself, and tested on a friend captivate, but my vibrant still the same NOTHING!, i mean wtf! the only thing it could have is a software/firmware problem but it seems he completely died on me!! :/
I had a bad cable once and had a odin flash go wrong..
Started out with download mode, but with no luck connecting to pc via 2 diff computers (not realizing it was the cable at the time) I kept messing around with it, sometimes connecting, then Odin screwing up again and eventually got to your point...nothing whatsoever, DEAD
After a while...called TMO and ordered a replacement...but didn't give up, I kept on with cable to phone, then pc...vice versa...battery in/out..and eventually out of nowhere it came back on..no idea how..one thing I do remember is reading to use vol up+down, but for me there was some weird combo where I think i started with up+down, then let go of up(kept holding down, or just used vol down)..can't quite remember...but don't give up..again mine was dead dead dead...somehow she came back...keep trying different things no JIG...
EDIT: Take your micro sd out of the phone and sim card too...that much i do remember...

thx for the ray of hope pal but I think i'll just sell ir or something anyway doesn't hurt to keep trying until it happens, i have seen mostly 2 kind of options on internet the buttons combo and the jig tried them both nothing seems to work, I just think i have no luck, i bought the cell and 48h later it was already dead.....anyways thx to the people who bothered to answer me
Options:
1.you can call TMO for replacement.
2. Let the technician open it maybe there's something wrong wid d digitizer
3.Have you heard about the JTAG? It can resurrect your phone!

UnBrickable mod is way better than JTAG. You should check it out. JTAG works once. UnBrickable mod allows software based recovery always and works on a dead brick with no special tools once its applied.
There two videos on the portal now which mention it. I'd like to think people are using it.. after all, this mod doesn't just happen. It takes someone to put in the work to research it... ahem...
option 1
--------
1. remove the sim-card and the memory card
2. remove the battery
3. connect the USB cable to the computer and to the cellphone (still no battery).
4. press on both volume buttons (volume up+volume down)
5.while you press on the buttons enter the battery into the cellphone.
option 2
--------
1. connect the USB cable to the computer and to the cellphone
2. press on both volume buttons (volume up+volume down)
3. press and hold the power button
4. the screen will dim - keep pressing on the buttons (3 of them)
5. the screen will show up the cellphone-computer picture - keep pressing...
6. the screen will dimm again - keep pressing
7. the screen will show up with the vibrant logo
8. leave the buttons - now the cellphone should enter to download mode

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S II won't turn on (black screen). However, sound can be heard..

I'm aware that I might get insulted for being a n00b, but I went through a lot of pages and haven't seen a thread similar to mine, so I'm sorry if I have misused the search box. I have a Samsung Galaxy 2 II. Today, I wanted to root it so I tried. However, I'm a complete retard and accidentally tried to install a rom that wasn't made for my phone. Yes I know it's stupid. Odin crashed and caused my phone to go into black screen mode. I can't even access Download and Recovery mode. I have tried taking out the battery 5-45 minutes and it still doesn't work.
However, when I plug the usb cable inside the phone, The phone isn't being detected. I can hear 3 sounds. First sound is like when a usb is connected to the pc sound, and the 2 other ones sound like a usb hasn't been connected properly. I know I f'd up probably, but I just wanted to know if there's a solution for this other than USB JIG. Once again I know I'm supposed to learn what I'm doing, but it was a stupid move and I'm aware of that so sorry if I sound like a clueless n00b. I just thought I could do it properly, didn't think it would end like this.

I have to admit that it was a completely idiotic thing to do. You obviously did absolutely no/nada/ziltch/zero real research into flashing your device since you made 2 monumental mistakes, ie flashing device with low battery and also flashing incorrect rom.
Try using a USB jig to power device into download mode, If that doesnt work you will need to get a JTAG flash via a Riff box and if thats the case I have absolutley no sympathy for you.

One foggy hungover little extra bad on me. Was firewater s-off with temporary root, twrp 2
6.3 recovery flashed fine but never had SU commands only SH. In a hungover haze I noticed twrp had 2.7 open recovery out and without due thought I downloaded it to update the recovery. I blatantly force flashed the zip from my phone using CWMR. foolish of me straight out, no excuses. Phone rebooted twrp recovery flashed 2.7 zip and then power dropped immediately. Will not power up/charge.
I got the USB/DLOAD message. Been reading every since to self fix . Would appreciate advice on proper path to take. I've been reading on one hand since it was S-Off it possibly blew the LCD and no bueno brick city. Yet I've also seen success with flashing the RUU as a possible. Other option I found so far was run the JTAG method with Ubuntu and/or try shorting the 2/5 pins with 300k resister.
I'm not concerned about warranty, I would really appreciate anyone who has the time to respond and experience with this indescretion. I would prefer not to damage it further with incorrect fixes if possible. I believe i just jacked my boot image and need to use the RUU method unless the LCD was blown from over clocked over voting .
Direction on the correct method if any is appreciated. I'm completely open to answer questions i may not have addressed. Totally thoughtless and my fault yet I'm very clear on what I did to cause it. Many years electronics repair, still medicore Linnux skills so please go easy on me there. I just need the correct path if known. Im a big boy and fully capable of learning it on my own so no need for you to feel you have to list script and hold my hand.... but a good ass chewing is never out of line ") Thanks for any experience you wish to share.
someone help please ?
Phones dead, no led, no charging, no button combo brings it back. Everything worked great, plugged it in Friday night like always, wake up Saturday to find it was off while on the charger. The cable and charger that it came with, and girlfriends DNA charges on it no problem. Took it to Verizon and they tried a few things, nothing they did helped, like I was surprised. So they are sending me one, but I want to know what happened and how to fix it. This seems to be a common problem, but it seems most people at least get it to power back on at one point.
Exactly what was happen to me some time ago.The only solution i found is to open case and charge the battery about 10 seconds.I advise you to use usb port of your computer to charge it. Btw if you let it drain to zero you will have to do this procedure again

[Q] Failed FTF flash, any way to unbrick my Z2 tablet?

Hey XDA,
tried to flash the 17.1.1.A.0.402 FTF on my unlocked SGP511 Z2 tablet and something must've gone terribly wrong. Flashing seemed successful, but it won't switch on anymore, I can't enter Fastboot mode, I can't enter Flashmode and the recharge LED isn't on anymore when I connect it to the charger.
This is the first time something like that happened to me, I had several Nexus devices (and two G1s) before, flashed custom ROMs countless times, but I never managed to get one of them into a state of complete unresponsiveness.
Is there any way to unbrick my tablet?
EDIT: just to clear that up, holding Volume up and power doesn't do anything, so does holding Volume down while connecting it to the PC.
Almost Same problem with me..
Cant get in to the OS no more after installing CWM

I've had a similar issues with bad flashes before.
Is it possible you flashed an LTE fw to a wifi only tablet?
I got round it by setting flashtool to be waiting for the device in flashmode (with the picture saying hold the back button and plug in) and then with the tablet repeatedly pressing the power and volume up, waiting for the reboot and quickly plugging in with the volume down until the device was recognised.
It appeared to me to be a timing issue ie. catching the plug before the OS started loading but after the device had started the reset mode.
I know you said the power + vol up doesn't respond for you, this may be due to the battery draining so much that it simply cannot power up anymore. I would suggest plugging it into the wall (not a usb port of a PC) for a few hours first (even if the LED doesn't light up it doesn't hurt to try to trickle some power in and eliminate that from the possible causes).
Basically, keep trying flashtool and trying to reflash your ftf. It might help to redownload it too or double check the md5.
Also, I haven't tried it, but I read somewhere that the red switch under the SIM/SD flap is a hard reset button that does the same as the power + vol up.

Thanks a ton for the help, I definitely flashed the correct FTF, that was actually my second flash and it worked with the same files half an hour before. I also tried all combinations of Flashtool in flashmode, power/volume/power off button/USB cable I could think of repeatedly already, to non-avail.
I'm currently settling with the fact that I somehow managed to hard-brick my tablet and that I have to face the cost to send it in to Sony for repairs.
Most probably you didn't hard brick your tablet.
That is very difficult and unlikely.
Most probably you just didn't do the steps for reanimating the device right.
Hard reset (Vol Up + Power). Then, while holding Vol Down, plug in the USB cable which is connected to your PC. (Do you have the drivers for the tablet installed on the PC?) This should make the LED go blue. (=Flashmode.) Then you can flash a FTF (take the right one for your model!) with Flashtool (not the Sony one, but the xda one with the same name).

Thanks a lot for your help, but unfortunately the tablet doesn't react to anything anymore. Before e.g. the LED lit up when the tablet was charging, that doesn't happen anymore. Hard Reset usually made the tablet vibrate, doesn't happen anymore, either. Same for Fastboot mode. Flashmode doesn't do anything to the LED and FlashTool doesn't recognize it anymore, too, when I boot it with Vol down pressed. I've done all that countless times over the past week and nothing works. I know that manufacturers make it pretty hard for their devices to hard-brick, but this time I'm completely at a loss, there's nothing I've not tried so far.

After you feel you bicked it, was the device still vibrting when hard resetting? If it was and now ot isn't then you've probably just deadened the battery by asking. Iitt to repeatedly reboot.
Try leavingg. Itt plugged in to a wall forr a few hours and every oncee in a while try the hard reset again to see if it starts to respond.

Unfortunately I have tried that already, too. It doesn't seem to charge anymore (LED doesn't go on), no matter how long it's connected to the charger. I also tried charging it with a couple different chargers besides the original one already, that's also not the issue. It was completely unresponsive as soon as the FTF flash was finished.
Unless there's an "undocumented" alternative flash mode (JTAG pins? NAND chips exposed somewhere on the board? But how would you open the tablet, anyways?) there's nothing I can do. I've sent an Email to Sony mobile support already, I hope they'll answer with an andress where I can send it to, soon.
I yesterday overcame an issue where I couldn't enter flashmode by using PC Companion and using the repair software feature, but PC Companion needs to recognise your device first so I guess it is out of the question. Nonetheless, I think anything is worth a try.

No dice, unfortunately. :/
To add insult to injury Sony Mobile refuses to repair my device, at least the hotline guy told me so - even though I explicitly told him I'm willing to pay for it, since there's no warranty due to the unlocked bootloader. Anyone has any experience with that or knows whom to mail in such a case?

You could try and PM some of the respected devs around here for advice on last resort recovery from bricking. DoomLoRD and maybe Jerpelea (aka FXP who now works for Sony) come to mind.

Thanks for all the help, I finally decided to sell the defective tablet at Ebay (correctly marking it, of course - I hope some repair shop buys it for parts) and bought me a new one. Owning two Z2 tablets right now, feels a bit strange.
Same happened to me today, nothing helped. Going to send it to Sony for repair

After reading over your posts, I think that was a good choice to sell on ebay. However, Patience in keeping it on a charger for many many days (i put an hp touchpad 3g with the same issue on for a week before it finally gave response) could have fixed it... A tablet with no response like yours usually will still get a trickle charge over time and in turn revokes a response. Hard bricking a tablet is always misconstrued when in reality it was a soft brick, even in your case.
Anyways good luck with the new one!
The same thing just happened to me last night. It's pretty ridiculous how it happened to. I originally got the tablet a few months ago and rooted it with CWM via Doomlords method. Was working fine for a while. No issues, not using it for anything in particular but regular media. I do believe I restarted the device a few times before this as well. So I was maybe going to start getting more into modding especially since CM11 finally has builds for the Z2. I powered the tablet down, tried to go into CWM recovery (just to make sure it was still there) by pressing volume and power buttons, the thing then just vibrated and flashed a couple different LED colors before dying. That was it, the thing was utterly dead. I've tried all kinds of combinations of the buttons, going into fastboot with a USB connected to the same PC I used to flash/recover it before, charged it for well over 8 hours. Nothing....
I'm a bit of a fighter though. I specifically remember a friends xperia z (phone) dying and showing no life and then just reviving with no noted fix. I'm going to try the constant charge method for a while. I'll likely update with any luck.
Edit: No progress, I called Sony and just played a little dumb. Will be sending it to them soon. I think I may have an actual hardware problem. This happened without any recent flashing/major changes and I can't even get any kind of signs of life in recovery.
Hello guys, same problem here.
Flashed my tablet with a .402 ftf file everything went well. I played with the tablet for 4 hours. After that I tried to flash it again, the flash was successful, I booted at least three times on the tablet. Then it just went off and now I have nothing. No LED when pluging to a wall, it's no recognized by my computer.
I was thinking about dismanteling it, unplug the battery and try to boot it on again. Has anyone tried to do this before?
Also if you have any clue to dismantle feel free to give it to me.
I'll keep you in touch

Sounds a bit like my symptoms. I also flashed a .402, first flash worked and booted perfectly fine, till I decided to flash it again, then everything went off and the whole unit was dead. Problem is, I don't remember flash tool displaying an error, but I also didn't look for one, that's why the only explanation I have is a faulty USB cable. Maybe it's a faulty image? Do you remember where you downloaded that .402 image?

Yes, I downloaded it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2765250
I'm 100% sure that the flash worked the first time with this image. I haven't modified the ftf file and when I tried to flash it again as I said it went off but not instantly. I was also working on the kernel when it crashed but I don't think I bricked it because it should do something: boot loop or at least the led turning red when plug-in it to a charger.
I bricked tablets before and I know the symptoms, but just having a dead device like this is totally new. And really anoying...
Sony just told me to return it to them.

Good for you, I hope they'll repair it. I wrote off my ~260 EUR loss already (broken tablet fetched 220 EUR on Ebay).
I'll have a look if that's the same image I flashed in my lunch break.

I don't think they'll repair it since I've unlocked the bootloader and rooted it :/ but anyway it's broken so it worth a try. If they return it to me I'll just try to dismantle it and see what's going on.
Good luck with your tablet :/
