Display hardware calibration? - HTC Droid DNA

I've noticed for a while (since I bought the phone) that the white saturation seems to suck compared to most devices I've owned, even my old, crappy dell latitude display. By that, I mean a lot of fine details especially light grays appear way too bright or are completely washed out (the new play store looks much better on other devices). To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, here is a picture of a white saturation test found here (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/white.php) screenshot I took on my DNA first being displayed on a DNA (all gray other than first square being completely absent) and then that same screenshot being displayed on an iPad. The difference both in this test image and during general usage is stark to my eyes, though I've mostly learned to ignore it.

Same DNA screenshot displayed on 3rd Gen. iPad:
So, my question: is there any way to calibrate the gamma/contrast of the hardware or are we pretty much locked out of that short of being in the factory?
Here is the screenshot used above for kicks:
Edit: Found an pic I took a few months ago when I had a replacement DNA that I was sending back (different unit than the one I currently have) side-by-side with my iPad. Took that for reference I guess, but you can see contrast.

Interesting, except, the second photo (which looks proper) is not an ipad? Ah, it's a screenshot. Bet we can find something in kernel.
If you open that screenshot in gallery and zoom in/out/etc you can briefly see where the patterns are displayed. So I'm thinking it's not a calibration or hardware issue as much as some sort of "enhancement" (e.g. dynamic contrast of some sort).

You're right! I just played around with the original screenshot I took and the actual website and saw brief glimpses of at least a few of the figures. I had heard people were complaining about a similar issue on the One, so I thought I'd bring it up as I had noticed the same thing on the DNA and just written it off as being a weakness of the panel.
Edit: Caught it in the act! Was uploading a screenshot to the OP via tapatalk 4 and the screen seems to dim as it uploads. Sure enough:
I could see some of those squares on the bottom as the screen dimmed. Is dynamic brightness/gamma/contrast something that is controlled at the kernel level?

really I don't know what we're dealing with for sure. When screen dims like you captured, that's not really telling us anything (of course stuff shows when you dim it).
But you can get it to briefly display when full brightness. What else is interesting, in cm10 gallery, if you apply a black and white filter to the screenshot (just removes color from the shot), all the squares show perfectly. Weird, heh?
So hard to say if it's dynamic contrast, or a "shortcut" in hardware acceleration etc.
I think a good start would be to try to view that screenshot in many different photo applications, including those that do NOT support acceleration. That might help narrow it down a bit.

I haven't had a chance to find an image viewer without hardware acceleration, but I did ask over in the One forums if they had a similar problem with the same screenshot and the answer was no, so this is DNA specific.

I'm honestly having trouble finding out whether or not an app has hardware acceleration. I've tried 4 different photo apps with the same results as the stock gallery in sense 5.

It's almost comical how much better the display looks with this silly "feature" removed from the kernel.

Holy cow! You may have made my day, or week, or month (nvm, you already made my year with moonshine). I've noticed this on the stock kernel, stock NOS kernel, and beast mode kernel: would the 'feature' you found be consistent across all of these kernels?

Yep because its dumb thing HTC did in kernel source. Are you familiar with compiling kernels?

ha. fastboot boot to this. do NOT use it as your daily driver, it's only kernel source I had laying around. I don't remember who's source it was or what hacks I made in the past. do NOT flash it. just fastboot boot it and go check some things out (like that website)

I'm not very well versed on how fast boot differs from flashing something in recovery, so I'm a bit wary on that front. Could you point me to adequate documentation to what fast boot is and how it's used? I'm assuming in this instance it's kind of like booting into a safe mode for one boot only? Also, is this a fix that could be integrated by developers of other kernels into their builds? Thanks a ton and I'm sorry I'm not quite on top of things!

Nothing risky. Just download it. Reboot to boot loader then:
fastboot boot boot.img
It will use that kernel until you reboot (after which it will boot whatever kernel you've flashed last). Give it a try

Wow, you weren't kidding; this is night and day! You can actually see light gray now and colors seem more saturated and natural. What the hell was htc thinking? I'm really surprised more people haven't complained about this or replied to the thread. I mean... Wow! What kind if tomfoolery did HTC put in place that you found? Tapatalk actually look normal In the default gray gradient theme now. It's too bad I'm using an inverted play store mod, so I can't check that out at the moment.
Subjectively, whites and light colors seem much more balanced and not blinding like they were some times before.

Got mine and sorry to report....

..No light bleed
..No bad pixels
..Working GPS
..Decent Wifi
After all of grumble threads, thought I'd report back with some positivity.
Oh, and as a special treat for those who subscribe to HBO and/or Cinemax, set the stock browser's user agent string to be 'desktop', and navigate to http://hbogo.com or http://maxgo.com
Also, in tegrazone, you can get the newly released Grand Theft Auto III (paid app - but pretty darned good).

Ok that's all well & good but no one here is really reporting back on web browsing which means a lot to me.I had a xoom & loading some pages & scrolling with flash set to "on demand" was horrific. Please let me know how the browser performs. As i am going to pick up my Prime tomorrow.

Yes... to prove your device is bad use it as you never would normally... go into a pitch black room and look only at the asus boot screen. You'll see that your device REALLY sucks.

Chill out man It was built for ICS. Would you say a modern PC sucks just because it has windows 98 on it? I'm sure the prime will be just fine. Hopefully there will be custom roms later that make things even better.
It will never be an ipad though. Android was built to do everything at once and as fast as possible. Not like the ipad that stops everything its doing to provide smooth scrolling. If scrolling is the most important thing to have in a tablet go for the ipad!
This is the first time i'm getting a device on release and i really dont get most of the people here^^ It seems like you're all trying sooo hard to find something bad about this device. Yes I am sure. Look at the gps thread for pictures and what i did to get a good, wifi free lock. I do not have bleed either on dark screns. If i take it into a dark room, dark screens always have some bleed. No lcd in existence passes that litmus test. It is not remotely noticable at all at operating conditions.

No G-Tab has ever been reported to have have screen bleeding. LCD bleed? No. Moisture under the screen? Yes.
Samsung builds their own panels and they perform exceptionally well. That's why, before the war, they were Apple's primary display provider. Sharp does OK, AIO is hit and miss, and LG's a disaster. It would be intersting to see who makes the panel in the Prime and if it comes from a single supplier. HTC uses both Sharp and AIO in the same device. Do Asus tablets have a diagnostic mode? If so it would probably be in there.

Taking boot animation requests

Yup
-Mediums-
So tell me what you want in your boot animation. Be detailed or not. I'm comfortable with Blender (3D modeling & animation suite), Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, and Audacity, so I can make an animation from scratch on any medium, compose videos, and even do basic sound mixing for it.
-Queuing-
If an idea sounds cool & easy I'll do that first, and if it's ROM/user specific (like a name animation), I'll save it for later. If it sounds too difficult and/or ugly I'll also save it for later, and I can't guarantee I'll get to all of them (depending on if this gets popular)
-Requests-
You can be as detailed as you want (or not at all), and I'd prefer if you linked effects videos (free stock videos) and/or sounds to mix. I'll also just cut up & format a youtube video or something if you want that. FYI I'd say I have a very good eye for things that look good, so you can just be broad and let me do the rest if you want. The product will also depend on how lazy I am at that time.
The boot animation is composed of multiple parts, and each part can be played once, looped a certain number of times, or looped infinitely (of course you would loop the last part infinitely, or make sure the animation is long enough to accommodate all boot lengths). No one part can contain too many frames or else the boot animation will glitch or hang. Also specify if you want me to cut the framerate or resolution of the animation if it makes the animation glitch.
-Payment-
Thanks's. I also get a warm fuzzy feeling from this .
Hmm, actually there is something I'd appreciate in return if anyone can do it for me. I'm currently using teamd3rp's Blue Dust skin, and it's beautiful. The only thing that really bugs me is that the selection colors (colors when selecting menu items or pressing buttons) and scrollbar are grey. The selections are also gradients, I'd rather prefer the same flat ICS blue. If anyone can replace those items (as well as the lock ring) with the ones in this skin (ICSSpark), or at least point me in the right direction, I'd be really appreciate it. Thanks!
-Installation-
Depending on how lazy I am, I'll either provide a flashable zip or just the raw files. Also it can be different for some roms.
-Disclaimer-
I am in no way responsible for anything bad happening to you or your phone. It's not my fault, use these at your own risk. You broke it, not me. I am not responsible for damages to your phone, these include but are not limited to your phone bricking, breaking, bursting into flames, stealing your wife, falsifying police reports on you, winning against you in court, sending you to prison, and taking your home and children.
NOTE: I will NOT be testing these on my own phone (unless otherwise specified), I will only be testing these in the Boot Animation Previewer so if the animation does glitch, just let me know and I'll adjust the framerate/resolution.

Can you make something like this
It should be in portrait
Without "Assassins Creed" words or any other words
Without audio
First part of animation should be while it spins until it transforms and the rest should repeat until phone boots up
Hope its not to complicated

Thanks a lot. I have been trying to do it myself but i dont have nearly enough skill to do it
Done. I tested it and it's working on my phone, but for some reason it speeds up a lot during the last part (the infinite loop part) and idk why. It looks fine in the previewer. It's probably something in the rom (I'm using ZR3D 2.0.1GT vB).
Took a bit of tweaking to actually get it to fit well and loop right. Let me know if it looks fine on yours.

Looks good. You are right it speeds up at the end(repearing part)
Maybe it will even bee bether without that last part, only spining animation, what do you think?

Sure, but then I need to lose the cloud and glowing square animations for it to loop right (unless I try some fading trickery). Actually I think one of the cloud layers was based on an algorithm that I can adjust... I'll see about it tomorrow as I need to sleep right now, just let me know what your conclusion is.

Not one to rant but gotta add my 2 cent here.
It's great that you like both of those themes and can only use one at a time. Not cool to ask anyone to swap out images in those themes(without asking the creators of them)in trade for anything. Mash-ups are great for personal use but to ask to have images swapped from two different teams themes in a post not so much(99% of the themers here don't mind sharing) .Now if you want to learn to do that for personal use there's a great thread to learn from in this very section of the forum. Or you can ask the creators about maybe New colors coming to the theme of choice.<rant over>

I spent quite some time trying to get it working correctly and tried compensating by slowing it down beforehand, and also lowering the file sizes so there isn't any lag from reading. But I guess it doesn't like me . Anyway, I also put together an only spinning animation at 60 & 30 fps. Though it's still very strange, the first loop is slow then the rest is at normal speed. I spent a couple hours troubleshooting this but can't find anything, I'm stumped! I tried different renderers, compression formats, resolutions, and tried switching to pngs but it still won't look right, which is very strange because my Warm 2.3 animation looks fine. Sorry I can'y get this working right, but here are the best three versions of it:
Just spinning (30fps)
Just spinning (60fps) [more lag but gets much smoother]
Full animation attempt [still not perfect]

Sorry about that, I guess "Payment" wasn't the correct word for it, maybe just a favor. I wanted to give something back with this thread so I don't feel like a mooch. I also tried to go at it myself a few days ago but I'm unsure of what images are what, whether I need to decompile/recompile the apk or if I could just drag and drop the pngs in Winrar, etc. It was my first time rooting and such just a few days ago so I'm still a super n00b. Just asking for a favor openly, sorry if I offended anyone!
Though, would you happen to know why these boot animations are speeding up during loops? I tried googling it but only found an unresolved thread. I'm stumped as to why they aren't working correctly.

Sorry I can'y get this working right, but here are the best three versions of it:
Just spinning (30fps)
Just spinning (60fps) [more lag but gets much smoother]
Full animation attempt [still not perfect]
Do you have a specific video in mind? I don't know where to go with this!
Thank you so much il Duce!

Wasn't offended. But if you wish to mash up for personal use please take a look at interactive phone modification guide( questions welcome) Wasn't trying to be a **** ( sorry if I came off that way)
As to your bootani's speeding up, I can take a look if you want and it's just the looping part? The other parts are running as intended? Is it all of the or just the one?
Sent from my Xoom using Xparent Red Tapatalk
Just my experiences here: in ROMs with GPU rendering (is that the right term? I'm sleep deprived right now...), like ZR3D and Eternity ROMs, the bootanimations always speed up after the first repetition in a loop. I don't move away from those ROMs and reaper ROM much so I can't tell you if it does the same on other ROMs or not.
Could you make a bootanimation of of red and black UFO (beats audio colored) abducting our phone and then saying beats audio?
this one, http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uO9Jhm3QZcM
Hi there would you be able do this for me please,
I would like the medallion spinning but still readable and 3d if possible, keep the colours and writing.
Be good to see, thank you

How many different revisions of Fascinate do we think there are?

Being without my dev laptop for a couple days, I'm bored - lol.
I was wondering if we know how many hardware revisions of the Fascinate there are out there. I know they all claim to be i500.04, but I've had enough of them to know they are certainly not all created equally.
From the ones I've had/have, the screen seems to be the tip-off. I can account for three different "models" myself:
1. The "good ones". These are black and have the nice screens. Fairly accurate color temperature, very bright with bold colors. These also seem to run the fastest and are the most likely to be able to overclock to 1.4GHz successfully. Also for me, the least amount of trouble with Wifi enable/disable when that was a problem. These are the ones my wife and I got from Verizon back in 9/2010, and I've gotten hold of an official Samsung refurb recently that fits this category. The one Fassy I bricked was like this as well (so sad, stupid corrupt boot.bin)
2. The "warm ones". I have two of them, they aren't my favorites. Black case, but a very warm (red) color temperature screen that tends to be less bright and lacks the color oomph. Mine have notably slower performance than what I call the good ones above, and had something different about Wifi that required a special change to stop the enable/disable problems. I use them as clocks and as Sonos device controllers, always on 24/7 in docks, and they serve that purpose well.
3. The "cool ones". Both white and black cases, although I've only seen the black ones as display models. Every white one I've seen fits this category. These seem to run well, but the screens are terribly cool (blue), to the point of being off-putting to me. Unfortunately I gave the one I had away before I started working on GeeWiz 3/4, but I don't recall it being as slow the "warm ones". It was the screen color that made me not want to use it.
Silly topic, I know. Just wondering... lol

Notably slower performance than the good ones, and had something different about Wifi that required a special change to stop the enable/disable problems. I've relegated both of these for alarm clock/Sonos controller purposes since they suck so bad, and I don't care if the screen gets worn out from being on the clock DayDream 24/7. I'd shoot them if I didn't have a use for them!

So, um, basically then I just insulted the phone of a fellow Fascinate lover. Open mouth ... insert foot. My bad dude, I wasn't thinking. THIS is why I don't leave my thread! I'm apparently an uncivilized heathen.
(I know you didn't take it that way, but really I should have thought more about saying I hated the phones with the warm screen, that was uncool how I worded it -- I have removed the hate from the post, but it's immortalized in a quote anyway - ha)
Wow I didn't know there were versions like that floating out there- I guess I got lucky because I seem to have the 'good' one, yet I got mine mid-2011 (on Verizon) so it would have been possible to get one of the others I guess...

[DISCUSSION] Thoughts on your new One?

What are your opinion and thoughts on this phone?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I'm loving it!! Very fast, the speakers are great. A few things I'd like improvement on would be the rss feed choices for the home screen and I'm not fanatic about Beats Audio through headphones. Although I may throw a custom Rom on it hehe. The feel is perfect, not to heavy and not too light unlike the galaxy 3 which feels cheap.
Already extremely please with this phone and TMobiles service.
I have it since monday it's great! I'm coming from the HTC mytouch so it's really an incredible difference . The camera it's great as well and battery is lasting a lot

anybody else got the HTC ONE ?
its a huge adjustment coming from a pure google nexus 4. here are just some minor random notes:
- the build quality is great, but the phone feels rough on the sides like they havent been sanded down. ditto for the earplug hole. NOT A BIG DEAL.
- either i got a phone with zero gap or people are seeing things on their phones. again NOT A BIG DEAL.
- phone is loud for a phone, not for radio. compared to other phones, its awesome.
- beats audio doesnt come through on the speakers. you get no bass from the speakers. performs elegantly with earphones plugged in.
- the car dock is amaaaazing. must-have.
- the car mode is really well done. you can choose to listen to local radio stations through wireless with tunein. you can also add other apps to car mode home. navigation gives you google maps, appointments, gas station, restaurants, by photo, parking (parking structures), cafes, bars, atm, convenience store, pharmacy shopping and emergency.
- htc should have made the logo a real button. yes, its capacitive and we will be able to use it as a real button, but it doesnt light up like the back and home buttons and generaly looks out of place.
- facebook/twitter/messaging integration on sense is really well done. better then most alternatives ive seen.
- wish you could scroll diagonally on the apps drawer.
- wish you could turn off the feed.
- wish you could use your own icons on sense home.
- thought the notification light was going to be bigger. they used a hole on the grill to insert the light. but at least they included it.
- tmobile bloatware... ugh.
- everything is superfast and super responsive. havent seen a touch of lag yet.
- screen is amazeballs. dont know if its placebo effect, but it seemed to have looked better after 3-4 hours of usage. dunno if thats the screen warming up or my eyes getting used to it.
- really gritting my teeth at this s-on s-off thing, never had to deal with it before with samsung and nexus phones. but i knew what i was getting into.
- camera is VERY nice. havent had enough time to play around with it but it seems to snap photos very quickly and clearly.
- already feeling the effects of having run 4.1.2. coincidentally the first two apps i tried to install on the phone, creditkarma and dashclock dont work on 4.2.1, just 4.2.
- more apps then i care to number still have the menu button at the bottom, including facebook. little silly that you can run facebook home on the phone but the option bar takes up 1/5th of the screen.
- i sorely miss the aosp notification bar, although sense's isnt bad.
- phone gets pretty toasty after moderate usage.
- i can hold the phone comfortably but i have huge hands. still have to hold the pinkie at the bottom of the phone to keep it up.
I just wanted to upload 3 images comparing the Nexus 4 camera with and without flash to the HTC One without flash.
I am impressed with the camera so far! They were taken without trying to make them look nice just to see what it would be like in a moments notice to take an image.
Just got back from the shop with mine. First impressions:
-Thoroughly gorgeous, and feels perfect in hand. Nice weight - lighter than I was expecting but still totally solid.
-Screen is amazing. Razor sharp, bright, with great viewing angles and none of that AMOLED-turns-blue-if-you-tilt-the-phone nonsense.
-No gaps. (Serial FA34CW if anyone's interested).
-Power button is a little tricky to reach for me one-handed. I can just two-hand it though, not a big deal. Don't have any issues with the two-button arrangement.
-Haven't had a chance to try out music on it yet, but I got a call and I flinched, it was so loud. Vibration also seems very strong.
-Blinkfeed is nice to have, but I could see it being overwhelming if that was my only homescreen. I pushed it off to the side so I can look at it if I'm bored. Otherwise, I really like Sense 5 - nice clean design, all the stock apps have the Holo-style "view pager", and in general it just works great.
-Performance is excellent - this thing really flies.
-Typical T-Mobile bloatware. Disabled almost immediately.
-Haven't had a chance to use the camera yet. Still have to do some experimenting (and don't really want to take pictures of the random crap on my desk).
Overall I'm highly impressed. I think that, if HTC fails (knock on wood/fingers crossed that doesn't happen), it will not have been for a lack of trying, at least on the product side. They have the superior product - now they need to get the word out.

Settings>Apps, then swipe sideways to "All", then scroll through the list. When you find something you don't want, tap it and then tap "Disable". Tap "OK" when the "app may misbehave" pops up, and then repeat as desired. A couple of them (SoundHound and TunedIn Radio) can be fully uninstalled, but most can't unfortunately. Oh well, such is life with a operator-branded device. Kind of a pain but AFAIK this is the only way to sort-of get rid of them without root.
Roo is already available just unlock you bootloader and install twrp or cwm and then you can install supersu. That's what I did, then installed ti backup and uninstalling those first haha

Great phone, the tmobile version is the one to get: using an AT&T unlocked 64GB with T-Mobile gets me edge in supposedly "refarmed" areas more often than not, while the T-Mobile version always shows HSPA+.
Best phone i've had.
One thing that I hate though, why why why why why must I have Facebook crap in my gallery after loggining in!
went straight to unlock bootloader > flashed custom recovery > flashed ARHD 7.0 > now sitting on charge. love how it feel in hands
Is their a way to root with a mac?

So flashing the ROM's available for the other versions works? I suppose since the hardware is essentially the same, it wouldn't matter as long as the radio is kept, right?

As for changing the Sense Icon's you can, I have done it, you just need to root the device and do a lot of work.

You can only flash roms that are designated for the HTC One M7 device. However, there are some issues with the signal properly reporting and other issues.

Thanks. Haven't had a chance to dig around the forums yet now that we finally have our own section, so I wasn't sure.
I'm kinda surprised that the M7 ROM's are fine but not the AT&T ones. I'm coming from the S2, where we used AT&T ROM's frequently (with a proper kernel of course).

Galaxy s6 edge still get lags / stutters

Hi, i been using sim free s6 edge 64gb for 2 weeks now, i have moved from the HTC M8 it still runs same as the fast day i received it
always been worried about slowdown over time with samsung from past experiences, it still loads apps fast hope this continues , i actually like touchwiz look and menus
but i do get slight lags and stutters, for an example i have bbc news app as a widget when scrolling through the widget its not very smooth, on my htc m8 its smooth, once in the app its smooth
also when on flip board then scroll right to get back into homescreen then another right scroll to get bbc new widget, it wont let me scroll, i have to always give it a second go for it to scroll, when disable flipboard its fine
another thing i noticed, when looking at the edge for time, news etc and flipping it over then going back into home screen, the phone will always re draw homescreen ,
i know these are little things, but they do bother me as this is such a high spec phone and alot of money, i have used in the past HTC M7 and M8 and they run super smooth and they still do,
i have in past used galaxy s2, s3 ,s4 note 3 all had same issues, i was hoping samsung would have sorted this now but guess not, dont get me wrong the phone is great, rapid charging, takes great pictures, fingerprint works so well, its faster then using a PIN / Pattern , the M9 i know will run super smooth, but it didnt excite me coming from HTC M8
Thanks
I have the same issues phone is two days old and it's very Lagg don't really know what to do
mines not super laggy, but there are them issues, i dont have much apps syncing etc and only use official apps, the setup is the same i had on the HTC M8, its annoying samsung cant get this right, in a ideal world HTC software smoothness on Galaxy s6 hardware that would be the best phone
I did have a bit of lag here and there from time to time and installing L Launcher fixed it completely.
How often do you reboot your phone?
I used to have redraws and a bit of lag. A factory reset took care of it. Must have been due to the incremental update we had when we first bought the phone.

Yes, even though the phone is a beast, touchwiz is still touchwiz, so it lags sometimes. I usually notice it when surfing the Web using the native browser, chrome is even worse. But I'm loving the phone, have hopes that 5.1.1 will iron out these small issues.

I can appreciate having to tweak some things, and I don't use flip board or briefing app or whatever it's called but we SHOULD NOT have to turn everything off on a phone that costs this much $$$$$ and supposedly has the best specs in the world!
I know the best way to stop ALL LAG...turn the stupid thing completely off and toss it in a drawer!
I too had an M8 that I sold to get this thing and my wife still has her M8 and it runs as smooth as melted butter in a Teflon skillet! This thing...the edge...not quite there yet. Either Google or Samsung better get their act together soon or they will never see another dime of my money!

I'm in the same boat. Considering the specs of this phone is much better than my Note 3 (which did not lag much), it's inexcusable that the slowdown is this awful.

Hi, i sold my HTC M8 to buy this, M9 hardware didnt excite me, but i bet it runs super smooth, after watching the galaxy s6 edge presentation on how they stopped lag and faster then ever, i had to try it and i aint pleased its still there, dont get me wrong this phone is a beast, battery life better then M9, when its smaller and running 2k screen, and how fast it charges, and i love amoled screens, its got so much going for it, just wished there sorted the software side out, i actually dont mind touchwizz look and menus,
