Going to jellybean - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I'm on blackstar 9 under ics but I want to update to a jellybean rom. Before installing any new jellybean rom do I need to update my cwm or install a new kernel first? I tried just wiping and and trying to install the new pacmon rom but kept getting an error. I haven't flashed a rom in a long time but I know there must be sometime failing to see. Any suggestions? Thanks I'm advance!

Get goo app off play store and update to twrp

Yes you need to update your recovery. I recommend TWRP recovery. It's very easy to use and most developers recommend it too.
Here's where you get it.

Once you install twrp make a backup. Pick your rom, flash it, then enjoy!
Kernels are for overclocking/under volting. Kernels are rom specific so research before installing one. Try the new rom you pick for a day or two to see if you even want a different one.

How to flash roms quickly

Well my question is basically how can I flash a different ROM without always starting from 1.26 and use gladroot then update and update again then the updated ROM or a new ROM?
thanks
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Once you've installed a rom using CWM you can just use CWM to flash a different rom.
If you want to be a little more cautious, you could use CWM to create a back up before flashing a rom. Then you can just restore to the back up and then flash the new rom.
So I wipe first then install the new ROM or can I just install from sd?
Thanks
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I created a backup before flashing a rom so I restore to that backup and then flash the new rom.
I think you could skip that step and just flash the new rom right over the old rom, but I prefer to stay safe and flash after restoring.
Great thanks

Flashing clockworkmod

Has anyone tried flashing clockworkmod using rom manager app? how was it composted to manual flash? Thanks.

You cannot compost CWM .
Root and CWM post .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
ClockworkMod
CF-Root includes a custom version of CWM4. I always make custom versions, as the originals often do not take some Samsung specific things into account.
CF-Root/CWM4 is NOT compatible with ROM Manager! Manage/perform your backup/restores from CWM directly or using the CWM Manager application included with CF-Root
I'm sorry I don't know what you're saying. My phone is rooted already I only need to instal clockworkmod to install rom right? Please make it simple.

Make it simple if you root with CMW & Root you get Clockwork Mod thats the method most custom roms use .
Other methods not a clue .

Think jje might be saying keep it simple and use a kernel that has cwm. Chainfires cfroot kernels for instance.
Rom manager...why when you have cwm app already in cfroot.
Edit: like above post said. Cfroot is not compatible with Rom manager.
It's pretty simple.
Flash one of chainfires kernels with Odin. Now you have root and cwm accessible via up+home+power or cwm app.
Download the desired cwm installable package (eg Rom) to your internal sdcard.
Access cwm recovery mode like said above and follow the process EXACTLY as the instructions say in the thread where you downloaded the cwm installable package. Eg Rom
Hope this helps.

Ahh you're making a sense. I thought my tech language was bad do iv can't understand JJ. Anyway thanks guys I'll try the manual way.

THe thing I learned:
Never use ROM manager when using a ROM based on samsung firmware.
Use ROM manager when using AOSP ROM like CM7.
Here I am again guys, sorry to bother you with my quest to change rom.
OK, so I can't install cwm with Rom manager.
I've tried installing cwm using the cyanogenmod guide, with no success. It gave me this ''ERROR: Failed to access device. Libush error: -12"
At this point, I'm desperate to install any rom. So I tried to unroot then install a sercure kernel back in to update official firmware. Even that doesn't work. I can't install the secure kernel. I eneded up installing the insecure kernel just to get the phone to work. So please lead me to something that easy?
Install a CF-Root kernel via Odin. You get root and CWM all included so you can install ROMs and do whatever.Thats what people have been tryin to tell you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
As that's great I'll try it asap. This is what I want to see simple and direct, you even provide a link.thanks a bunch dude.

That was just too easy and here I was trying every other method. That thread should be pinned to the first page. Thanks everyone.

Flashing Clockwork after flashing kernel

So I rooted my GS2 and flashed the clockwork kernel using odin. I know that the forums have been saying not to use Rom manager to flash CW.
I know that I have working CWM on my phone.
My question is, does that only apply to the initial flash? I.e. using Rom manager to flash CWM updates or flashing again from Rom manager so I can download Roms from the app, since the app is unusable unless you flash CWM from the app itself.
Or, Is there any way around Rom manager telling me I have to flash CWM before I can do anything.
All help is appreciated. I would rather be safe than sorry, and I don't exactly have 650 bones to drop on another phone if I brick this.

short answer is, dont use ROM manager. period.
Yet CM7 tells me to use Rom manager to install
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Don't use ROM manager on att sgs2.
Both cm7 threads in the development section (stable and nightly) have direct links to cm7 cwm installs for att sgs2.

Only use ROM Manager if you want to potentially brick your phone

What is your end goal? You can't really flash cwm because it's built into the kernel.
If you're trying to go back to a Samsung based rom, you *NEED* yo Odin back to jfd and start from there (there is no other way, it must be Odin/heimdall and jfd).
If you're trying to flash to miui or a later nightly, "flash" vibrantmtd, or better yet, flash the rom by hand in recovery.

I read some where I needed to use ROM Manager to update CM7, but if I just have to download it, copy it to my phone, reboot into recovery, then GREAT!!

People suggest rom manager all the time, but really it's just a gui to the recovery, with the ability to download roms.
Yeah, just flash while in recovery.

You will need to use Odin. No way around it. And you will need to flash back to stock 2.1 then you can use the cwm recovery update.zip from the esental hard to find files thread and that will install cwm once your on 2.1 then you can download what ever ROM you want and flash it. FYI you will need to flash the ROM twice. Once will give me the jb recovery then the second time will install the rom
