If you have the s off windows version just run it from the windows administrator account and use the instructions as in unlimited.io, it worked for me that way.. I had 64bit aswell my 1sy attempt lead me to a soft brick cuz the s off process stopped in the middle so run it from administrator account

Once you learn more about it you will appreciate Ubuntu and Linux a whole lot more. Linux is no joke it is a great kernel if you didn't know already Android is based off Linux and you run it every day.
While installing ubuntu onto your pc just to s off seems inconvenient it is actually safer on Ubuntu since unlimited.io found a vulnerability and discontinued the Windows S off method and moved it to ubuntu.
If you get a windows version you won't get support from unlimited.io and not so much from xda since we respect their wish of not supporting the windows method.

Hey
You will find all the information related to android development at
http://developer.android.com/guide/index.html
And if you want to pull all sources for android related devices then follow this link,
http://source.android.com/source/initializing.html
For this you will need to be using Linux OS/ Mac OS X OR use cygwin or emulator on windows.
I have given you the most generic instructions available and maintained by Google.
I am not sure which sources do you want to retrieve exactly.
ENJOY!!!

I suggest you to use the laptop with high configuration (cpu n RAM) because source compilation is heavy on cpu.
So you can clean hdd of old laptop if its good.
Or make use new laptop.
If you want to use new laptop you can either install linux-ubuntu by partitioning hdd to have dual boot : windows/any other + ubuntu
Or use softwares like VMware to emulate ubuntu in windows. (But this wont be efficient)

Hey,
I am sorry if you are offended, I was just unaware of your situation.
Well I have never faced a situation like locked bootloader on laptops.
Tell me what errors did you find while booting?
Which method did you use while installing? (CD or USB)
Have you been able to boot into Live CD or installation CD of UBUNTU?

From what I have understood, you were able to boot into installation cd and installed the linux system. And after installation when you try to reboot it stucks at bootscreen. Am I right?

Right now, I can think of only two possibilities,
1) incomplete installation (I hope that you have tried installing ubuntu multiple number of times b4 posting, so this possibility should not exist)
2) compatibility issue with your laptop's display chip. Pls try to follow this thread at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1200519
Though thread discusses about problems during installation itself, but by using -X argument like they have suggested should clear one alternative.

Do you mean that you have initialized repository by using

by setting up repository?
And does your internet connection requires proxy authentication?

Does your internet connection requires proxy id and port settings?
Because in that case you will have to provide that to curl command,
Code:
curl -x my-proxy:port https://android.git.kernel.org/repo
And if this proxy requires authentication (like in my case, as I work in my office ) then in that case
Code:
curl -U user:passwd -x my-proxy:port https://android.git.kernel.org/repo

I have just found out one more thing.
The server for android.git.kernel.org has been hacked and hence sut down for last few days.
Temporarily you can try other mirror site so as to get your job done.
You can follow these steps given at: http://synrgi.wordpress.com/2011/09/07/android-repository-remedy/
I hope it works this time.

thanks, this is were i first looked. it all seems to be for windows. will look again
So I tried and tried and tried again to get superoneclick to recognise my phone last night and failed. It hung after starting ADB connection. Would not continue no matter what I tried. Anyone encountered this problem or even tried superoneclick using Ubuntu?
I have looked for a script to run to achieve root but can't find one, as I can use ADB manually. Very frustrating.
Can't even update firmware with Sammy software cos it needs windows

How to use ODIN on Linux?

This is not really S3 related, I know, but it concerns the S3 in a way. Right, so I'm planning on moving to Linux again and leaving W7 since I never play any Windows games anyway on my laptop (I have my PS3 for that) so how will I go about flashing .tar files to my S3 when the need arises? I know ODIN doesn't work on Linux.

I can't answer the Linux question BUT you could always use Mobile Odin from the Play Store and do this directly on your phone. I've used it quite a lot when I haven't had access to a PC.
Regards
Oh yeah, I forgot all about Mobile Odin
you can't use ODIN on linux, use heimdall instead.
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
Run the Odin file through the kitchen and you get a deodexed rom with root that you can flash in CWM
Have not tested but may be use wine to run Odin on *nix .. not sure it works or not .
