Hi Guys,
I want to flash my GTI9100 with ICS. I have looked around but couldn't find the answer. Perhaps I am being over cautious but I need my device as a daily tool.
My question is this;
I am trying to figure out which ICS version that will upgrade me with the least issues based on the my Samsung GTI9100 current configuration (see attachment). Or do I need to go back to total stock config prior to going to ICS?
Any other direction/advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. As in I should just wait for a very solid upgrade.
Thank a lot
until Samsung release an official ROM, there isn't a "safe for daily use" install of ICS for the SGS2
agree with the poster above. wait when there is an official release then update. or wait when the kernel sources are released and then when kernel devs and codeworkx get their hands on the new stuff then i would say go ahead..
That is what i intend to do anyway
Thanks guys, sounds like very good advice. But man it looks sooo sweet
The latest leaked Samsung ROM can be used as a daily ROM. I have been using it for two days now, no FC, no crash whatsoever. Added Nova launcher and I'm happy with that.

Same here, using Ressurection-7.4
Using Westcrip's latest 8.1 rom as a daily rom. No problems at all and ICS is a must for SGS 2. You must try it!! You will not be disapointed mate! And you will never go back to Gingerbread after that

You're fine where you are. Just flash the ICS rom via recovery after backing up everything. Read up on more things beforehand if you have to ask questions like this. Galaxy S devices are almost brick proof with odin but you never know.
I tried out latest ICS for a day. It's stable for a daily rom. Just had a couple of minor freezes and touch sensitivity wasn't as good as gingerbread but if you want to try I recommend it.
I suggestbto try out diffrent ics roms. I'm running cm9, it's pretty stable, few bugs but looks better than any other rom.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Cm9 is good and well worth a look but the devs are at the mercy of Samsung releasing source code so it's not as complete as LP6.
I do like lp6 as a daily but only after stabilising it. Freezing apps, pinning down battery drain and fixing gps etc.
After you do that it's business as usual. And for the better quality Bluetooth sound alone it's worth it to me.
I installed the 3 file Odin version which is a wipe. The cfrooted with lp6 cfroot kernel.
There are also odexed and deodexed versions to flash. Just search a page or two and you'll find them.
To change look is too easy. If you like cm9 but want most things working just theme lp6 and it's pretty similar in appearance.
Just make backups via CWM and you can bounce between all the firmware, GB, CM9, LP6 etc.
Have fun.

Don't flash this as you already have one from ur ICS ROM! I just did not see any Stock Kernel that is the reason why i made a thread!
Haven't seen a stock ICS 4.0.3 kernel in development section so i m just dropping stock kernel in case some one needs it.
It meant we'll have mod kernel soon? Better battery faster ... everything.
Sent from my AT&T Galaxy Noteā¢ - please forgive any typos
ummm... what?! Is this i717 specific, or just the AOSP 4.0.3 kernel? How did we get this for the i717 without source? Where is it from? So many questions!!!11 lol
If this is for real, someone please throw a bucket of ice water (and/or trout) on Da_G...
I have tried to use this tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20806471&postcount=1 to inject init.d support into the stock kernel but cannot tell if it worked. It worked on the stock ICS kernel for the Asus Transformer according to this post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23005237&postcount=104
Anyone else more familiar with init.d care to try it? It did give me an init.d folder, and the command prompt on PC seemed like it was successful but I can't tell from the file it placed in init.d after first boot if it was successful or not. I tried putting a supercharger script in the init.d folder but it doesn't seem to be working.
edit: Also at the risk of sounding dumb I don't know what set permission as 755 is. I tried to set the permissions of the folder to match the other folders in the directory.
I don't understand why are guys so happy about this ?
This kernel (boot.img) is already in ICS ROMs,
you can just unzip one of those ROMs or the leak and there you have it !
They need kernel SOURCE to do overclock etc.

I was assuming this was source... which, as my previous post indicates, wouldn't make sense.
Otherwise, you're right, this isn't anything special. Nice to have separately? Sure, I guess...
so what is a kernal is this a ics leak, im a nubie and pretty stupid.
thanks
Guys, this is STOCK ICS 4.0.3 Kernel. In other words, the kernel that was provided with the leak. It's unmodified.

yes we know this.......which is not that useful for the dev....as they need the source code for the kernel.....without the source code....we can't OC/undervolt and do all the lovely things that we need...
I've been wanting a stock ICS version as there have been a few bugs that I can't get away from with the two mods I've tried... Maybe it's ICS, maybe it's me, but now I can see how the original runs. Thanks!

You do know this is just the kernel right? If you flash only this after a full wipe, you're not going to have a booting Android phone.
You sure? I would think it would be more like flashing it to what is already in it, unless, this is not for the i717.

I think he means if you flash it after a "full" wipe, meaning clearing the system. If you just do a data and cache wipe it should be fine, if of course you are running an ICS ROM.

...which already has the same kernel, so there would be no point.
If this isn't source, then I don't understand what this is for. Every i717 ICS leak currently available has this kernel already included. Having it on your SD card just in case isn't really going to do anyone any good, since everyone running any of the currently available ICS ROMs is already running this very kernel. If this is acceptable, then I won't be surprised to see others parting out the leak and posting pieces of it in the dev section, when it really belongs in General since it isn't source. Please don't flame me, just trying to make a point.

It's pretty useful for noobs who flashed DaG's kernel mistaking it for an ICS kernel.
OP is pretty misleading. There is no reason to flash this at the moment.

Actually, I dont understand what the big deal is...
There are stock roms in the development thread aren't there?
Stock Odin recovery image:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
Stock boot & recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504999
Strange that no one *****ed about these being in Android Development... I dont see what the difference is.
All this is is the stock kernel from the ICS leak taken out and made available for flashing in case you want to flash the stock kernel FROM THE ICS LEAK (so, if you are still on stock GB, this wont be helpful, this is ONLY useful if you are running the stock, unmodified ICS leak and have changed the kernel and want to revert back to the stock ICS kernel from the leaked ICS rom).
The OP is pretty self explanatory, in fact, the title of the thread is pretty self explanatory. I mean, ICS 4.0.3 STOCK KERNEL sounds pretty clear to me.
My only beef is not with the thread or its location but the lack of organization on XDA. There should literally be a category for ROMS, another for mods & themes & apps, and another for stock images. Q&A should be removed and combined with General. Given the limitation of the current choices, this doesnt fit under General, Q&A, Themes and Apps, or Accessories. The next best fit is Android Development. This is of course all my opinion.
Thread moved
Stock kernels belong in General.

I really didn't want to jump back into this, and it seriously doesn't bother me at all that this was posted... that said, there are NO modified ICS kernels on our Notes right now (we're all on the same kernel at the moment), so this won't become useful until someone modifies one (as appdroid apparently intends to do to add init.d) -- and even then, it will need to be replaced once the official ICS build/source gets released.
Either way, like I said, this thread doesn't bother me at all... appdroid's dev efforts on the Note are much appreciated!
Hi all,
I read a while back that some of the leaked samsung roms were causing hard bricks after people flashed to something else after.
I've been running an older AOKP build from a while back and haven't flashed anything in a while, but I remember I did flash a few ICS TW roms, in particular ShoStock and PhoneBricker. Does anyone know if either of those ever used the base that was hard bricking people's phones.
Or for that matter, does anyone know in particular which leaks were causing the problem?
Thanks all,
Kevin
Yeah, supposedly the new UCLE5 kernel is doing the same thing when you factory reset while its installed. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757972
If I just decide to odin back to stock to be on the safe side, it should be no problem going back to a gingerbread tar from my current aokp ics right? Just checking.
Much appreciated!

The problem is the kernel, as long as you have the UCLE5 kernel (or any other variant) your risking a superbrick. Just flash a new kernel then move to whatever ROM you want or stay on the one you have as long as the kernel is compatible. I had the UCLE5 kernel installed and just flashed Siyah (first) and moved to the resurrection remix ROM.

No roms in this forum have the hard brick issue so it isn't necessary, only certain builds (such as ucle5) stock kernels trigger this, take out the kernel and it is fine.

Both Shostock and Phone Bricker are fine. Everything else is good too. All the ROMs that are based on it have already changed the kernel. Why not just update AOKP? If you have been using it for that long and like it.

So just for clarifications sake. As long as I'm on a kernel now that is unaffected, I am safe from the emmc bug?

Hey Guys,
I have been reading a few threads but I am a bit confused (to say the least). I am trying to get the following questions answered
1a) Siyah 4.1 Kernel - Does this also do CWM? I got to Siyah based on creepnyncrawley's thread on doing CWM using Siyah but am now stuck with #1b below
1b) Siyah 4.1 Kernel only has a w/ mswap option. Per what I read this should be used only if we use I9100 ROMS. Can someone confirm/deny this? Also, is there a without mswap Kernel available
2) Jellybean - Being that I am still new to this any idea as to when we will get a stable jellybean build. The rationale being that as I am new to this I want to ensure that I use something stable so as to not brick the phone etc.
As said earlier - I have tried reading through things but admit to being a noob at this. Hope I am not asking folks to waste a lot of time
Thanks

1. No. just leave it how it is. changing recovery inside the kernel is not for noobs. our device is different from the rest.
b. mic swap/ no mic swap. one is for touchjizz and the other is for AOSP and yes, both are available.
stay away from the i9100 forums untill you know exactly what your doing. While these are similar devices, they are very much different.
2. ETA's are frowned on, asking for them even more so.
stable ROM has nothing to do with bricking. JB is stable for most. but still very much so under development.
---------
In a horrible mood. FML. But im gonna be nice today o.0
To add more info, Siyah kernel includes CWM already, all custom kernels for I777 include CWM; it's in fact the only way to get CWM onto your phone. An additional warning: do not try to update/change CWM separately, as it's built into the kernel.
If I'm not mistaken, all custom ICS and JB ROMs are I9100 based, hence the need for mic swap/no mic swap. At least, Samsung-based ones are, not sure about AOSP/AOKP. And if you flash the wrong one, no big deal, your phone won't brick or anything, you just will sound very quiet to callers and you'll know you need to switch.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong in any way.

1a) includes cwm.
1b) this will work with all current i777 jb ROMS since they're all aosp based.
2) CyanogenMod 10 (cm10) is stable enough for daily duty for most people and will definitely not brick your phone. Any instability you'll see will be in the form of battery drain, random reboots..that type of stuff. Not phone bricking instability. My advice is to try it. If you're one of the unlucky ones that has problems with freezes or battery drain then it's simple enough to flash back to something else. Either way, as long as you're following directions and flashing stuff made for your phone you will not brick your phone. The CyanogenMod team do excellent work and our maintainer, Entropy512 has put out a very good JB firmware.
My personal daily driver is cm10 with Siyah 4.1.1. I couldn't be happier compared to any ICS based roms.
I think the previous two posters have said it very well. I just want to add a couple of points on JB.
Since you are still new at this, perhaps you want to stick with ICS for now. JB roms for our phones, i believe, still have some kinks that need to be worked out, because, as i understand it (please correct me if I'm saying something dumb) Samsung has yet to release source code for certain key pieces devs need to build "native" jb roms for the 777. So, all else being equal, ics roms are more mature.
If you do stay with ics roms, you don't need to install Siyah 4.x, you can use Siyah 3.x with no problems. Siyah 4.x was created to add jb support, which you don't need if you stick with ics. The first post in Ktoonsez's Siyah thread will tell you which version you need (mic swap or not) depending on which rom you use...most roms, if not all, will already have the correct kernel built in.
oh yea, siyah does have a version of CWM huh. Always forget that its still CWM.
I was thinking OP wanted to change the version/style.

Your wrong. Crap in the ported section is from i9100.
android development is from source, or ours.
Mic swap has nothing to do with i777 or i9100. AOSP ROM's need a mic swap for the way the code is.

You're probably right about the mic swap, but you misunderstood what I meant about ICS and JB ROM bases.
What I meant is that the Original Development section houses ROMs that use an I9100 base, but are built for the I777 (Ported Development contains I9100 ROMs that have only been hellraised and are otherwise built for I9100). For example, ShoStock uses XWLPT- 4.0.4 as its base. That's obviously I9100, since there aren't any 4.0.4 stock bases for I777. The only ROM I'm aware of that uses an I777 ICS base is Semi, it uses the stock UCLE5 base. But these rules seem to only apply to Samsung based ROMs, and I have no idea how AOSP ones work. Can someone else clarify? I'm really starting to get confused now.

I forget exactly what I was doing a few days ago. I installed AOKP JB on friday as my secondary ROM. Running Siyah 4.1.1 I had JB as seconary, and stock ICS as primary. When calling from STOCK ICS, I was very quiet, like I was down a hallway from the phone. That is when I found out about service mode and all that. Ultimately though, tuning noise suppression on or off (I can't remember which completely fixed the way I sounded, but it's an in-call toggle so you can test it easy. Then after that I swapped ROMS to that stock was secondary, and JB was primary. Everything was fine except when plugging in aux cable in car, I had to crank car volume up because phone was really low. There are other threads about that particular issue, but I never ran into it until then. So, all this to say, mic-swap might not be that big of a deal with two roms. I'm a noob, so all I can do is speculate.

Its extremely obvious, you sounded far becauze you are using MIC SWAP! Mic swap on stock ics means the mic where you would normally talk gets swapped with the noise cancelling mic. Just my 2cents+common sense

I'm looking to update from Android 4.0.4. My SGH i777 is rooted from last year.
I have the clockwork mod recovery installed from last year. Using AOKP I think.
There's ROM's for 4.3 but I don't see any kernels posted here. Can someone point me in the right direction? Apparently the sg2 has left the limelight for a while now.
Once I get the kernel updated, does anyone have any good ROMs to recommend?
Thanks
ps You guys are an awesome community.
Which rom is a personal matter. You should try them yourself to see what you like. If you want Samsung Touchwiz based firmware, the latest version will be 4.1.2. To get 4.2.2 or 4.3, you will have to go with one of the AOSP based roms.
Since you have a custom kernel with CWM Recovery, just pick the firmware you want to try and flash it in recovery. You don't need to install another kernel first.
Wait, so all I have to do is pick another ROM? That's it? No firmware update?

firmware update? no. Whether 4.0.4 or 2.3.whatever, you already have have root/cwm; all that's left is a some recommended housecleaning*, then flash whatever ROM you want.
*either:
rom-cleaning-script
or:
factory reset
+format system
Mind = blown. Thanks so much guys!
In my experience with custom ROMs, I found that ShoStock3 v4.0 and UCMD8 v2.2 COOKED give the best battery life and stability, but I use the stock kernel for ShoStock and AJK v4.9 for UCMD8 COOKED. CM/PA/AOKP have given me subpar results in terms of stability and, most importantly (for me anyway), battery life. This is not to say that those other ROMs are bad, but for me, those haven't been working out. Your mileage may vary. Just my $0.02.

So you're looking for a rom. The rom you use will all depend on the type of software you like. If you like touchwiz, I recommend Shostock 3 4.0 or the Cooked Rom. If you're looking for a AOKP Android 4.2.2 rom, then I would use the Resurrection Remix rom, but remember, all roms differ on every phone. Not everyone gets the same results. I wouldn't use a 4.3 rom because its fairly new and pretty unstable on some phones, but if you really want to, I got the best results on the Carbon rom, but the battery life wasn't so good. Also, a lot of the 4.2 and 4.3 roms require you to flash gapps, which are the google apps for you phone. If you're looking for kernels, the usually come with the rom you download, so you don't really need to get a kernel. If you really want the extra customization and tweaks, there are some kernels out there, including AJK, Jeboo, and STI, that you can flash. I personally use AJK on a lot of my roms because I found it to be the most sucessful. I am running Shostock 3 with jeboo kernal right now. Shostock 3 has good performance, stability, and battery life and is touchwiz. So yeah, keep all this in mind when flashing a kernal. You don't to connect your phone to the computer or anything to flash a kernel. If you're rooted, you just have to have the rom in your phone storage or SD card and go into clockworkmod recovery and flash. Hope this helps and good luck on finding a rom that's right for you!
