1) The S3 is Quadcore (international) and Dual core (US). THE S4 IS OCTA.
2) It's called lag, and "something is laggy".
3) Samsung's gallery is kinda slow for some reason - download a third party gallery from the store and just open the picture from there.

the problem why it so lag to open the gallery from camera and how to resolve this problem??
if you know, why did you mention S3 as an octa core? coming to your problem.. that lags if your phone is loaded with much stuff or many running background processes or running internet..

English aside ... I have the same difficulty. It sucks BIG TIME IN ANY LANGUAGE.
Anybody have a reasonable solution. I'm using 4.2.2 CM.10.1.
It's enough for me to buy a new phone almost. It's embarrassing to show people any photos. I'm like, 'Have a look at this ... <pregnant pause while my phone takes FOREVER to get its ****e together> ... Ok ... maybe another time, CYA'.

Downloaded 3d gallery - I think it ugly, but it is instantaneous... I wish I understood why the CM.10.1 had such a lag issue. :crying:
I always tought the gallery very slow too, not the way you guys are saying but it could be better.
Now i'm using Nightmare rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2330827 ) and the entire phone is much much faster..
I think in your case should be a lot of apps running in the background

Hi,
Just got a S3 the other day, so now I've rooted it and flashed Omega v26 custom ROM.
Everything works fine, but one thing has been bugging me; the dialer, contact app and message app doesnt stay in memory. When they're not in memory they take like 0,5-1,5 seconds to load, which is unacceptable to me! :crying:
Is there a way to make them stay in memory, regardless..?
Thanks in advance!
I believe it's the jb leaks that have thus problem? So nothing to do really.

So this is not an issue in ICS?
Yes, it IS an issue with ICS. A lot of people might not notice it, because, obviously, if you've just recently used the dialer or contacts app, they are still in memory and load quickly, but even in ICS, it's an issue I'd sacrifice a bit of memory if there was a way to keep them active. There's got to be a way to do it.
I have CM10 on my wife's SII and the dialer loads much faster by comparison, and there's still a lot of work to make JB fully ready for the SII, since kernel sources have not been released yet for it.
It's a shame that such a device is plagued in such an obvious way. It's the Achilles Heel of the SIII, IMO.
It's a PHONE and the dialer and contacts should be something that every user will be reaching for constantly in normal use. Can't see the reason why this cannot be solved.

A friend of mine thought of a way to work around this. I havent tried it, but in theory it sounds doable.
If you disable the built-in app killer and install another which has capability to ignore certain apps in a list when freeing up memory.
How about that? Is that worth trying? If so, whats the best app killer out there?
I have the same issue ... but with normal apps such as a twitter app or mini-games (not 3D dynamic games). I keep reloading them if I don't use them by leaving them inactive in background for more than 3 minutes give or take.
Where is multitasking for Gode's sake ?
I think its more an issue with the touchwiz contacts and dialer being very bloated. The cm10 contacts and dialer isn't always in memory, but it loads up so fast that it doesn't HAVE to be in memory. Last I checked, the touchwiz contacts can take up to 80-90mb of ram (I only have 130 contacts) which is way too much to be honest, and phone doesn't have much user free ram as it is. The only alternative is to use EX Dialer, it always stays in ram and is very fast, if you get a missed calls though they won't be cleared until you use the stock dialer, very annoying

Well, that sounds like a lot.
But my friend who has a Galaxy S2 doesnt have this problem (he's running 2.3) and the dialer, contacts and message app is not that different on the S3 so it should not take up much more RAM, right?

That's what you'd think, but it does. Even on the S2 though the contacts and dialer were slow to load, don't know what tests Samsung are doing when they optimize the software on their phones but I think the Contacts/Dialer/Messaging should always be in ram as default. 1-2 seconds might not seem like a lot to people, but when phones with inferior hardware are opening the same thing in under a second I can imagine someone pulling this face in astonishment
Edit: Just checked how much ram messaging and contacts uses in CM10. 30mb together lol, compared to the average 50mb I had with Stock TW Contacts

So there's a 20mb difference between stock TW dialer/sms/contact and CM10? If it's not more then that I don't see what the problem is. Would gladly sacrifice a few megabytes more RAM to get rid of that annoying lag..
Do you think this issue will be corrected in future releases?
I honestly do not think it will be corrected ever. Since that problem was present in galaxy s also...
One can certainly hope.

Hello,
Due to the fact that I had the same problem with dialer/sms/contact on my i9300 (4.1.1) I decided to write my solution of this.
So, I did as follows:
1. root
2. edit /system/build.prop and add lines:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
sys.keep_app_1=com.android.contacts
sys.keep_app_2=com.android.mms
3. reboot
Now, these applications works perfect!

Well, it should be... but unfortunately sys.keep_app doesn't work in JB as it turned out later so I'm looking for another solution to keep dialer, contacts and sms in memory permanently.
However the ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 line improves performance of my i9300 and now is much better.
When dialer/contacts/sms are in buffer memory then there is no lag and phone works amazing!
any news ???
I have just bought an S3 and I am actually quite disappointed in it's performance.
I have an S2 (Running stock ICS) and my S3 (Running stock JB) is quite noticeably slower, with terrible lag.
I am just wondering if this is normal, surely this should out perform an S2?
The 2 main area where it is considerably slower is opening up my contacts and MMS app.
From clicking the contacts icon it takes about 2 seconds to actually load the contacts, and the MMS app takes about the same time to load.
Also when opening my app drawer it is buggy and laggy when scrolling through.
I notice that I also have little to no free RAM, yes I know how android works and how it utilises RAM but it doesn't seem right to me.
Anyone else having this problem?
I'm also running JB which should be smoother than ICS!
The firmware version I'm using is XXDLJ4
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
you are either doing something wrong or holding a faulty handset, apart from the delay in opening contacts app after heavy usage, s3 will absolutely smoke s2.

Thanks for such a prompt reply!!
It totally smokes my S2 in benchmark tests but in real usage it doesn't.
Is there any way of checking if it's faulty?
Like maybe an app that checks all 4 cores are running properly and GPU is functioning properly?

turn off Facebook sync and ripple effect

The screen scrolling is fine, it's nice and smooth. It's the opening up of contacts, phone and MMS that is really slow.
I've got the latest UK JB update so it should be a lot snappier, in my opinion.
And it's definitely a S3, no doubt there. Yup it was slow right from the get go.
It's the crazy high RAM use that is annoying the hell out of me
Oh, Then go to developer options and select background process limit to 4.That should help, but if you are freaking out about the RAM, then don't cause that's how android uses the ram.
I am currently Using Liquid smooth ROM (AOSP) . I have no contacts or phone lag. Use it if you like AOSP
Use an ASOP or miui Rom! JB onS3 is good but Sammy needs to improve.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
yes your s3 should blow your s2 away and NO you shouldn't have to tweak or remove apps, live wallpaper etc.
First try a factory reset...best and simplest advice for performance issues.
Then, and only then should you need to try to find out what apps or settings are causing problems (to be honest no settings should retard performance that badly).
Then...and its a longer shot is a faulty rom installation which a reset won't fix. In that case you'll need to reflash DLJ4 from a reliable source, here on XDA, samfirmware, checkfus etc.
If still problems then your issues are hardware related and you need to visit your provider who'll have access to a maintenance centre, or even samsung themselves...assuming you're still running stock. If not you need to use a guide to restore your phone status to unmodified and a flash a stock rom first.
Good luck

you are not alone.......http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1958171 ....and this is really annoying
Mine is REALLY fast. More responsive than ics for sure.
Full wipe, stock and..
That's it
Also loading a list with 50 or 100 contacts and some having photos can not be immediate unless its already in the cache..
Definetly do a factory reset, usually fixes most of your problems.
If its being all sluggish i would suggest running "Paranoid Android [ROM]" on it, which is amazing. Or if your looking for something lightweight go, "SuperNexus".
Either way, also go to " settings > dev options " and then change all the Animation Scale (From 1x) to 0.5x it will make the animations faster.
Your phone is not faulty.
The stock contacts and sms app made by samsung are too heavy and indeed open very slow. You should try exDialer or jelly bean sms app which can be found on Play store.

I only notice slowness with power saving mode enabled. Make sure its not and it should. I would use roms as close to stock as possible, IMO. Flashing and using aosp amd miui like others have stated will probably cause more niggly bits of annoyance then rectify current issues youd only replace them with new ones. Unless of course you have a rom addiction and flash every second day like me

No problems here, but have changed a lot.
Disabled S Voice, froze all Samsung applications. Same with services like remote controls, tracking etc. Deleted bin/kiesexe since I never use KIES and the extra ram is handy to have (ROM cooks, here is an idea, ask users if they want KIES on install, if not delete it)!.
Install a good kernel and try running a SQL optimization script to speed up databases. Lastly don't touch supercharger etc to get more free ram (that is wasted ram). It'll slow down Contracts and the Dialer since it removes them from ram. They are loaded at startup for a reason.
Also lastly, turn off unneeded Startups
You should be able to find a list of unneeded services and tasks, somewhere on the forum
You'll understand why, when you look at the list of unneeded bloatware, services etc running, why it is slow. shame on Samsung.
Swyped on GT-I9300 - XXDLJ4 - Siyah kernel 1.7b1 - JKay framework -
try wiping the cache partition in recovery mode. worked for me
I had a galaxy s3 which was smooth when zooming thru the pictures in the gallery.

The gallery on 4.1.1 (Touchwiz) is bugged, black bars and weird stuff, they fixed it in 4.1.2 by bringing the note 2 gallery.
So no it isn't a core android issue, just fixed by samsung in their 4.1.2 leak.

I doubt it will be fixed. It seems like Samsung ignores the simplest things on a phone. Contacts/Dialer that is slow to load, messaging app that refreshes (when you can see the phone numbers before your contacts names load up), laggy gallery. Ex dialer is a fine solution for contacts. But the slowness of the gallery app when opening it after taking a picture is quite poor. The gallery app should open when the camera is open, or at least stay in memory. Seeing the phone say LOADING for 2-3 seconds when other phones are instant is a shame lol.

Gallery lag
Yesterday i installed the stock 4.1.2 rom from kies (i am not rooted) and the whole phone seems laggier, especially the new gallery app it is awfull, it lags all the time even when it is allready opened in the backgroung. the pinch to zoom is almost unresponsive, too laggy.
Should i make a hard (factory ) reset , because some people say that the 4.1.2 is very fast. I bought the s3 I9300 two weeks ago and it had 4.1.1 which felt not that fast (and coming from iphone 4s a bit dissapointed) but for sure better than th 4.1.2. Suggestions please !!!

Hey there guys .
Well i was using AOSP Based roms for a long long time,
untill i figured out taking pictures was really ... a huge thing to me.
I feel like theres no rom that can handle camera as good as TouchWiz based roms.
So i switched to Android Revolution (4.3) with a S5 Theme which looks kinda neat and works pretty decent -
BUT ITS NOT AOSP which i love so much ...
I was using Temasek's builds for ages and i kinda miss that feeling having a nexus experience on my phone.
I would love to know if theres a solution for it...
a good AOSP (4.4+) with a good camera who does not crash. ("Cannot connect to camera") ?
any news about getting official kitkat update for i9300 and hope that CM will work on it ?
So please if anyone knows what im going through just guide me.
Thanks alot.

Ive never tried dual boot before but im trying to think about situations like'
"me walking down the street, running CM on my phone .. suddenly BAMN! a flying cow. i gotta take a quick responsive HD footage of it" ( some 1080p video running on 30fps steady... y'know.. without that cm lag")
so that ain't an option i guess.

To be honest, I did not take many photos with the camera, but the ones I took were okay I guess (I'm no expert so I can't tell you if they are or not better than the ones you can take with the Samsung camera app).
Regarding the video recording, I'm afraid it's worse than the one on Samsung app, because it randomly starts focusing somewhere else and you have to refocus by tapping the screen. And forget about recording anything with the front camera as you could only make SD videos with pretty bad quality.
There's no camera like the Samsung one but this is the closest you can be to that on an AOSP rom.
Hope it helped.

They're not stable yet. ie. you can expect random reboots for no apparent reason at all. On the other hand I can confirm that almost everything is working on all roms. I am on CM12 and am loving its neat UI.
Yup just as jnx_r said expect random stuff to occur because the roms aren't quite there yet. At least 95% functionality with a side of randomness. The UI is something to behold and is really fluid. While I ran it, I had little lag and no random reboots, except when I forgot to charge the phone and let the battery almost die; that sent the phone into a crazy bootloop. But, don't be afraid to try it out on your own, just make sure you read and understand before flashing. And ALWAYS make a nandroid. You should always have an escape plan to fall back on in case crap hits the fan.
What about stuff like camera, Facebook video upload and Snapchat video recording? I've been on Cm11 for many months and always have issues with the camera, facebook video uploads hanging and snapchat video recording not working.

Cant answer about facebook upload or snapchat because i dont use them sorry, but as for the camera, on archi's cm12 rom the stock one doesnt work without a fix so its recommended to use google camera but even then when i used it after 2 days that stopped working for me.

I got the camera can't connect error too. But restarting the phone fixed the issue. Anyways, the main thing is that is not that frequent ie. completely usable.

Yeah that's true, it's still usable and will get fixed hopefully in the next release
All questions need to go into the Q&A area and not the general area.
I will get a mod to move it for you this time but next time post in the right area or ask a mod to move it for you.
