Any thoughts or facts on this? i can't go naked because, well i drop the phone sometimes. We all know the OG gets hot after continuous use but i'm wondering if having a case on (mine is clear TPU) keeps the phone hotter than if case-less.
Found these;
http://lifehacker.com/5903080/should-i-use-a-case-on-my-phone
Heat: Nothing will kill your battery, slow down your phone, or burn a hole in your pocket quite like an overheating device, and a case is only going to exacerbate that issue. If your phone is prone to getting a little warm, wrapping it in a non-breathable case is not such a great idea. Photo by Justus Bluemer.
http://lifehacker.com/5828090/why-is-my-cellphone-burning-a-hole-in-my-pocket
Take it out of the case: This kind of goes in with the last one, but is something you can do in almost every overheating situation. If you have a case on your phone, take it off. Certain cases will insulate heat far more than others, and removing it could give your phone a chance to cool off a bit.

read those articles and it got me to thinking. I also had a little too much time on my hands at work this morning so I tested some things out.
First, since our phones don't have cooling fans, the only way to cool them is by ambient temperatures being lower than the phones temperature. So when they use the term "breathability" in those articles it is bit of a misused term in regards to how the phone cools down. If they were cooled based on airflow and the case restricted airflow, then yes, breathability is an issue. Also the phone and case themselves are both made out of non porous materials so technically nothing is really breathing. So for our devices it is more about heat transfer and direct cooling, so technically nothing is really breathing.
So I wanted to see if the case was transferring heat or not. I had my phone in the case in my pocket for an hour without using it and i used an infrared thermometer to check the temps. The outside of the case read around 81-82 degrees. I took the phone out of the case and checked the phones temperature and it was the same. I put the case back on and let it sit for 10 minutes in a 70 degree room and the temps dropped to 75 degrees and it read the same on the phone when I took it out again. So the case is transferring heat. I would be concerned if the outside of the case was cooler than the phone itself. Then there would be a problem.
My next step is going to be repeating this without the phone in the case at all.

The case will have a measurable impact, dependent on the material, thickness, etc. However, similar to the RF transparency of the material, I'm not sure it would be noticeable in real life.
Several factors will also mitigate this, including the processor being near the camera (which is usually uncovered on a case), and also that the case normally only covers the back of the phone (which in this instance is the same material as the front).
So in short, my opinion is no, (but yes, a bit!)
I'd say the extra heat generated is less danger than one serious drop.

One of my cases I had made the phone overheat a lot more then it being naked. (it was the rubbery material and plastic two part case)
My new diztronic tpu case has been much better with heat though.

I would have to say that it depends on the thermal conductivity of the case. If it has low thermal conductivity, the case would end up acting as an insulator and trap heat in. If it has high thermal conductivity, the case woul act as a heat sink and move heat away from the phone body.
Just my two cents.

What lg could have done, was put an aluminum heatsink that had a thin fin that spread to all four sides of the phone that would dissipate the heat from the center. Then again, I haven't ripped my phone apart. It may have that already.

I've ripped it apart a few times, no fin, but there is enough clearance to do so, I might give that a shot just because.
Not sure of the potential interference to cell signal though..
Good idea regardless, even aluminum foil at that close proximity with maybe thermal compound or a pad would do more than nothing, in theory.
If you are concerned about trapping of heat, another option would be the stick on covers. The bodyguardz http://www.bodyguardz.com/armor-carbon-fiber-lg-optimus-g-p970.html seems like a possible option. More grip, less slip!
Of course the whole debate is ignoring the biggest issue, holding the device in your hand.
So I've come to the conclusion that using the new G2 would/ a case isn't an option. It just gets too frigging hot. That in mind. Do I want a hard shell or tpu case? I'm thinking a hard shell would be best. Trouble is, I'd like it to be as thin as possible. I'm using the high gloss case from Verizon now and it def helps, but I'd prefer something thinner...and less ugly, LOL.
I would agree heat kills batteries like no ones business
- but a saved screen from a drop with a solid case is worth the tradeoff imo.
Every phone case has a low thermal conductivity, cause all of them are obviously made of plastic having to absorb and to be elastic
---------- Post added at 05:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:45 PM ----------
I think the simplest solution is to get a normal tpu cover and make holes in the back as much as you can to maintain the integrity of the cover, cause the main problem is to expose the phone but to keep it safe

I thought I had seen this some where but can't find it. Has anybody heard of talk on a new backplate made of a material that would not screw with wifi and gps? Asus or third-party? Personally I feel Asus should be manufacturing them (since they will be making them for there tf301 anyways), and replace them. But at this point I be willing to pay for it, from Asus or a third-party.
I think they/we won't be able to just replace our back plates. Feel the upper left (upper right corner when viewing your device from the back) after playing some graphic intense games. It gets quite hot.
Now imagine this being plastic, which does not conduct heat that good. I guess the prime would overheat.
There are some plastics that can tolerate heat up to 347 degrees Fahrenheit such as Polymethylpentene. (Not that you need to get up that high in tolerance. You could probably be fine with something like Polycarbonate, which has a heat tolerance of up to 275 F.)

I highly doubt whatever plastics they use would be unstable enough to melt under the kind of heat the TP puts out.

That's not what I meant. Maybe the metal is there to actually "transport" the heat outside. Plastic would be more isolating, because it does not conduct heat very well. My fear would be the prime overheating, and not the plastic melting.
There are some seriously tough plastics now: I wouldn't worry about their stability.
The heat sink issue could be real, however, but again: there will be a margin of overload built in.
One problem could be the screening afforded by the grounded back plate which if taken away would make the device fail various EMC tests and airplane approvals, due to the emissions of "sprogs" (spurious emissions) from the motherboard and wiring. As currently made, it will have gone through many tests to quantify this, and taking away the aluminium back would screw this up.

cut some paper the size of the battery, and stick them between the battery and the case. Add/take away sheets of paper till the case still closes but the creak is gone. We did this on the droid bionic, did wonders for the terrible creak of the phone. I haven't had to much creak with the rezound, but been meaning to do this with the phone.
yeah, I notice that as well with my unit. It is a little annoying. I have to say while the phone is nice, the build quaility really needs a little better.
You'll get used to it. No big deal.
The TPA case that goes only around the edges (sold on htcpedia.com) helps reduce this. It fits the regular back and OEM extended battery back. Best case I've ever had on a phone.

I bought the extended battery and back and that TPA case that goes around the edges but leaves the back exposed does a great job of squeezing the back and phone together and eliminating the squeeks. I like the regular size battery but with the TPU case, I use the extended battery all the time.
solution is too buy a 3rd party case.
My original Rezound didnt creak, but my replacement one does a bit. I notice it most when I'm cleaning the screen, cause that seems to put the most pressure on it. Sticking a bandaid on the battery seems to have helped it a lot though..
i put a thin piece there to stop the creaks, which it did..it's funny though, now my rezound easily spins in circles on a table hahah..that THIN piece of paper was enough to bulge the middle of teh back cover out to make it spinny!
Don't forget that paper is an insulator. That's why homeless people use newspaper as a blanket. Your phone will retain more heat, longer with paper shoved inside it.
yeah, we voiced those concerns back wehn this topic came out like the week the phone came out haha..was always a problem..but most of us never really noticed any higher temps than normal..my phone never goes over like 42 degrees C, which is what, around 100 degrees F?
I'm pretty nit picky about my phone creaking and I've had a lot of time on my hands so recently I've given this topic way to much thought.....
The creaking is due to the plastic not fitting perfectly and the friction created when the battery door slightly moves around.
I sat down with a bottle cap, a q-tip, and a can of WD-40 (I know, I know, call me crazy if you must )
I filled up the bottle cap with WD-40 and dipped the q-tip in it. I carefully LIGHTLY applied it on all the connecting tabs on the battery door. Voila! Be careful to avoid all the antenna metal stuff so you don't mess up your reception.

There's a thread on here if you look on here for it the case is called the Love Mei case, there's also a review or two on youtube. They're water resistant not proof people have said, and they have caused a drop in signal for some as well I almost got one but there seemed to be a few issues that made me not get it. Also Spen is impossible to pull out unless when you put it in you only do it partially in.
Looked at that thread and thought it was a different case cause it was also a lot cheaper
It'll probably interfere with the reception, being made of aluminium

YES they do block signal a little bit. yes they do make it harder to hear and be heard (a little) and yes it muffles the ringer a bit.
the red metallic one is quite nice looking. I got the yellow one from Love mei. VERy rugged very durable very heavy.
get rained on? drop it in the sink? get splashed on outside? your most likely A ok.
drop it in the pool and yank it out quick?. 50/50 odds. go scuba diving and your screwed.
Heloo i want to buy the z2 (coming from lg g2) but i am a little concerned about buying this phone:
1. How bad does this phone heat up will this affect the back glass by cracking or lifting the glass because of the heat genereated.
2.will the phone shut off if the temperature is to high.
3.how bad is the magnetic port loose.
4. How does the glass manage scratches and how shaterproof is it?
I hope you can answer my questions, my bigest concern is the heat makeing the phone unusable and the back glass adeshive working the glass.
Thank you!
There's at least 10 threads covering this already :-/
1. Phone doesn't get any hotter than any other device I've owned, undervolting improves this even further, no issues with cracking glass or anything else
2. No, it will throttle performance and stop you from using the camera
3. No issue here.
4. Same as any other phone I'd assume, I use a tempered glass protector and it has 0 scratches so far and I often slide or toss my phone to people
Yes i know all phones heat up, because z2 has glass you dont feel the heat more intensly than plastic i just wanted to know if it affects the somwhow the phone aka the glass

1) If you manage to buy the "lemon" which heats up, you can probably get lots of problems related to overheating, which may be the cracked glass and others. I would say it is a small percentage of Z2's, though. Majority of people who have a good phone just don't bother to come here and praise how great it is.
2) Mine did not overheat to the point of shut down, the warmest it got was CPU around 65 degrees and battery 44.5 degrees Ceslius. This was when I was shooting a timelapse in the sun of a rising sun, an hour of footage and surrounding temperature of around 23 degrees Celsius.
3) Mine is not loose, I have been using my magnetic charging for one week and no problems so far.
4) Mine has not managed to scratch and will not be. I have never scratched any screen of any of my phones and I had Samsung Galaxies, HTC ONe and all kept in pockets.
Your questions are too paranoid, like everyone had those problems with their phones... Keep in mind 95-98% of all phones are just fine...
I'm not sure that 98% is actually an acceptable quality level for a flagship device. However it is Sony's decision as to spend more for the remaining 1-2%.
That said, no device is 100% perfect, and if someone is unsatisfied, there is still a possibility to replace it.
I'm happy with my Z2 and I have no intention to send it back.
I bought a Nexus hoping that this device will last me for years to come.
But I am having doubts that if it will last long without a cover.
I decided not to put a cover on the phone just to make the phone always look good and not be one of those people who are always scared of getting scratches on their phone. However, just after 1 month of usage, the phone is literally having marks and scratches everywhere on the phone (including the visor) except the screen.
Even my 5 and 4 year old Samsung Galaxy 3 and Note 1 which never had a cover either don't have these many scratches, even today.
Why you let me down Huawei?
Is putting a cover the only option I have got?
Hi there,
I have my 6P for 10 months now with case 100% of the time.
Does it help? No.
When I take out the phone, I can see small scratches and dents. This is because some dust particles get in from time to time. This way when the case and the phone move a little touching each other, the surface of the phone is scratched.
It is disappointing.
I have my note 3 which haven't been in a case and it's more than 3 years old now, and does not have so many marks in the back.
This trend to make devices all metal is the dummest thing ever. At least they can put on some coating on the metal or something. :/
This is by far the most fragile phone I've ever had.
I've had mine since Nov 9th 2015. It's been in a case and a tempered glass screen protector since then. Just took it out and it's still mint. No scratches or anything. I also got the graphite.
Agreed, fragile AF!!!! LOL bent two of them in pocket without even doing anything extreme and i dont even wear jeans i wear comfy chinos. LOL so yeah got replacements for those.
TBH i've never seen anyone able to keep their phone in pristine condition with no case. granted they're probably more careful. But AFAIK, the moment they drop it there goes the phone. personally, I'm clumsy enough to warrant a case so i invested in a good Spigen one (see signature) and promptly dropped it on rough tarmac a week into ownership. I'd say if i had no case on, I'd have lost this phone.
Regarding your scratches on your phone, yes. This is aluminum. It's a soft metal. What are you expecting? Have you seen a pristine no case iPhone? This isn't really a "fault". A little bit of adjusting of expectations is in order. I personally like the polycarbonate that I had on my HTC one X of old. Even Samsung's plastic doesn't hold as well against the strength of polycarbonate.
Okay maybe 6p is not the toughest phone around, but comparing it with old samsung devices made of plastic is plain stupid. Its fricking aluminium, soft metal, show me one metal phone without scratches, i can assure you, you cant.
Better to have marks than totally broken phone. I dont use or even have case and I have dropped mine a few times and its not bad. A few marks here on the edges and there and tempered glass has saved the screen once. I have noticed I have much better luck with screens being ok after drops with aluminum phones than I had with plastic ones that always got broken screen when dropped even from low height.
I agree is a bit sensitive, a little flower if you wanna go there.
But it's our responsibility to keep it safe knowing this. I also wanted to use mine naked as it looks better and lighter this way, but it's so prone to on falling and hitting on something that I won't take the chance.
You can get good looking cases as well, Spigen for example looks good and protects it good.
Yeah kills a bit the aspect and gets slightly heavier, but it adds to protection and it's worth it.
Occasionally remove it and clean it to dust it off particles that enter occasionally.

I dont agree. In the past I always had to change my screen once or phone was full of marks if I didnt cover phone in some kind of casing. Now I dont even bother using a case as the last time I broke a screen from a phone was with Note 2 that I dropped into a puddle on asphalt. For example I had really really bad luck with my M8 like slipping a couple of times and it flew many meters high and landed face down and nothing. A few tempered screens but nothing else than some cosmetic marks. I feel the newer are much much better built than the phones like SGS2, Galaxy Nexus, Desire series etc etc.

that silver plating that has come off is the equivalent to any scratches you find on the back of the phone from putting/taking out of your pockets. It's just normal wear and tear. We need to keep in mind the material strength of the metal/plastic/polycarbonate/glass. The 6p's screen uses Corning gorilla glass 4. That stuff is virtually unscratchable from normal use. Of course you're not going to find much scuffs there compared to its soft aluminum body.

Mate, that's a 5 year old phone.
This is a 1 month old phone.
Well as mentioned it is aluminum. By nature, it's a very soft metal. Think soda can. Obviously it isn't going to be indestructible like some older plastic phones you mentioned earlier. If you're looking for a tank of a phone, maybe you should have considered something else. Nexus line was never really meant to be "premium" and has always been cheaper than other highly marketed flagships. Like mentioned earlier, maybe managing expectations based on this info which has always been the case is in order. I get that you don't like it, so maybe your best bet is to sell and get another phone? I can't speak to the Nexus 6, but I've had my Nexus 5 since launch 2013 and it is still in mint condition. For that I only use the bumper case (wraps around the phone, doesn't cover the back) and still no small wear and tear scratches. Just one big one that I accidentally did with a razor blade.

You also have to take into account that Titanium isn't as effective as aluminum when it comes to heat transfer, so you'd have a warmer phone which would suffer from higher amounts of thermal throttling.
