Hello all. It's been a while, but I just got this gorgeous new case that I love. It's from a company called *speck that i've never heard of before. the back material is all fabric and the "frame" is a thick grey plastic. The only other color/design i've seen them in is a pink and white.
I really love this case. The fabric aspect is really stylish. My hands arent really ever dirty, and I keep my messenger bag/purse/pockets pretty clean, so i dont have to worry about the case getting gross.
It fits snugly and all the buttons/ports are easily accessible. An important factor is that the plastic frame sticks out above the screen, so if you drop the phone face down, the screen wont get touched. Hopefully the plastic is strong enough to not crack on impact. I'll let you know if i happen to drop my amaze.
If you want any other pictures, or have any questions i may be able to answer, please let me know.
XDA isnt allowing me to upload the pictures so here there are in an album on imgur. http://imgur.com/a/dO5eP
Nice case, not a fan of the pattern though.

I am really liking this case. I am looking for something new from my Ballastic case. I hope they come out with another color combo. Like black/white/grey. I really like the fabric part.

Does it have the 3 pin holes around the camera?
I don't see them, but they are small and I am borderline blind, so because I don't see them, doesn't mean they're not there.
Wonder if they have any other fabric patterns, that aren't so girly... I'm gonna have to look into

there are pinholes. I can take another picture when i get home. There are two in the plastic frame around the camera, and then another with its own frame.
The lack of designs are sad. I'd be more into a black/white/grey but this was the least "girly" of the two. The pink really bothers me, but the fabric is really nice. Feels great in my hand.

that is definitely a lot more masculine. thanks for the link.
Boy, if the loud pattern doesn't kill the deal for me, the huge cutouts for buttons sure do. I guess that what "separates the men from the boys" where case makers are concerned. But I do see that case protecting from a drop....

well its a certain style of case. I personally like the larger plastic frame and big cutouts. i had a case before with small cutouts and i just found it annoying. It's all about personal preference.
Inspired by the case in the link below, I am on a quest to make a case. If anyone wants to make some with me, let's talk. If someone is interested in doing a rugged metal/rubber/Plexiglas case for their note, and has some tools to help (like a CNC router) we can both put in work on different parts and get some nice cases. (Such as, I powder coat them and make the rubber inserts, and you machine the aluminum blocks. We both pay equal prices for the parts, but labor is free because we both contribute to it) that is just an example, let's talk or give me advice please! Here is the post that I made before:
Orange_furball said:
Yes. I'm considering asking someone how much it would be to rout a case from aluminum (unless I can do it with a dremel?) And then make some sort of mold for a rubber insert. I can also get a Plexiglas front cover cut (its not guerilla glass, but it'll do and is cheaper to replace) I can get the aluminum decently cheap (by the pound) and if I get some routing bits I'm sure I can figure it out. The hardest part is the machining of the aluminum and the molding of the rubber.
As for paining, I can get it power coated (lasts about 10 years!) For a few bucks.
Anyone have any ideas? The only thing in concerned about is the headphone plug cover, but that can be otter box style rubber, as long as the outside is metal
Does anyone know how to mold rubber? Or would I be better off buying a silicone case and making a two piece aluminum shell, 4 screws on it in each corner and the plexi screen protector sandwich in between. Also a camera/flash protector of some sort.
So here is what I need to know:
1)How to make the speaker waterproof
2) how to mold silicone/rubber for a custom phone case
3) how to machine aluminum with average tools (no workshop available unfortunately)
4) how to do the machining and molding cheaply
5) design for the spen area. I don't see an easy way to plug that to make the case water resistant
6) antenna issues...

The gf loves it, and temps me all the time to switching my Galaxy Note to an iPhone 4s...
Nothing like that will ever come to Android. Sad.
This is really sad. If I had access to a cnc router, I would make a few metal shells and mold some rubber inserts. I want a rugged case, but not like the otter box. Something that is actually high quality. I mean metal, rubber, and guerrilla glass! For $25 (I think) more than the otter box defender!
I am always jealous of the cases for the iPhone. I can't find any that make me happy, so I *carefully* use my phone naked.

I don't have insurance. I just forgot to get it and honestly it seems like a rip off. I used it on my old Garmin Nuvifone G60 once but that was because I dropped it out of my second story window by accident (long story) every phone after that has never had insurance. I wanted it for the note, but I have been going strong since march 19th and its still in one piece
But with an awesome case like that I can throw my phone at the ground for no reason and not break it!

But back to your needs, you want a metal phone case? Otterbox seems similar but do you not like the rubber/plastic aspect of it?

That is an awesome looking case. BUT making it out of aluminum rather than plastic? Aside from the weight, folks report signal loss with bumpers let alone a full metal enclosure. It would be the equivalent of a Faraday cage.
ASUS goofed with the Transformer Prime's completely aluminum case which caused more than a few issues with GPS. The higher resolution follow up model fixes this with an ugly plastic section across the top.
Apple fwiw, mostly accounted for their iPhone's metal case by placing antenna(s) behind the non-metallic logo.
My other suggestion would be to do a mock up just to get a sense of the size and practicality of a case this size - draw it up and cut it out of wood.
Definitely following this thread. I love this kind of stuff.

Anyone know of a water "proof" case for the tablet only? I put my workout schedules for training into a spread sheet and it would be nice to take it with me to the pool so that I know what exactly I am supposed to do that day. Also it would be nice because when I am finished working out I like to spend 20-30min in the hot tub and it would be nice to be able to read while I am relaxing.
Just curious.

Pelican 1075 for carrying only. For use, nothing I can think of. Otterbox used to do great cases, and one for a tablet, as I remember, but they're focusing on phone cases now. It depends on the hostility of the environment in which you wish to use it, but I'd get a Peli.
Search for Gumdrop cases. Heavy duty thought not waterproof. Would be the case that Otterbox would have made.

I was very disappointed to see the matte finish wear off after only a few weeks on my HTC one x. With this one I'm thinking that the back may be a scratch magnet. Anyone have significant scratching on the back yet?
in pouch all the time, no chance to scratch it
Carry mine naked (the phone not me) and not a single mark on it yet. It may be to soon to tell but so far so good..
I panicked when I realized that my keys were in the same pocket as my phone. But not a scratch yet.

No scratches on the body, but like the guy before me I accidently dropped my phone into my pocket with keys, I got a couple small little nicks on the bezel but you can only see them on an angle. I'm going to see if I can polish them out. I googled it and saw that a normal kitchen sponge with the one rough side gets them out, Also heard toothpaste and just ordered some aluminum polish.
Other people only noticed when I show them, and my GF said I have severe OCD because the nicks are so tiny. She is right. It's not really noticeable to anyone but me, but it's driving me insane!

This isn't one of those times. The buttons on the dummy phone are not usable, it's ridiculously light, and the feel is somewhat different. The real phone was sturdier and had functional buttons, of course. They were both set out on the same day in each store and the dummy looks terrible now while the real phone looks perfect. It's a pretty decent indicator of the dummy phone being made with cheaper materials.

I just don't believe that HTC would have spent the time to assemble a phone that isn't going to be functional since it apparently takes a lot of time to assemble the aluminum body for the HTC One.

No scratches on the aluminium surface but the beats audio red logo and writing have almost disappeared. White 'audio' writing still there.
I dropped my One on hardwood and it rolled over onto a brick ramp (I was at the entrance to a restaurant) and skidded down it on its back. There are some deep scratches on the back and scuffs, but it's okay. Definitely want to put a case on it if you plan on using it out on the street

The matte finish wears off much more easily because the material was plastic. Microscopically, a matte finish is just an unpolished, jagged surface. Since it's plastic, it's not hard enough to be able to withstand the forces exerted on it when rubbed by your pocket/hand/table long enough so it gets polished over time (check out a computer mouse that's been used for a long time). This is completely different than scratching or chipping, which is a complete removal or deformation of the material. The nice thing about plastic is that because it's soft, it's much easier for hairline scratches to "heal" over time as the surface gets rubbed on.
The aluminum back will definitely maintain the matte finish better than plastic because it is a harder material. Drawback is that since it's harder, it's also more brittle so it's more subject to chips/nicks and hairline scratches will stick around forever.
TL : DR Material properties are a *****. The matte finish (it's actually a bead blasted finish) will stick around for awhile as long as your hands/table/pockets aren't made of sandpaper or things harder than aluminum.
So far Ive been using an otterbox commuter, however there is no otterbox that matches a pink device, the "berry" option and "lily" option are both pukishly horrid looking
The thing with that kind of case, and those of you who work in the kitchen know what Im talking about is the residue build up from heat/humidity that forms alongside the edges of the front of the phone no matter where you place it on you (at least with the commuters), making port covers very important.... as my N2 survived 6 weeks before having a faulty charge port without a port-covering case.
However, Ive had no such luck finding a conventional case that has port covers....thats not otterbox, I've seen some nice cases around these threads but its all up to port covering & drop protection because well....thats entire point of a case.

No offense, but if I saw anyone in a kitchen with their phone out I would tell the manager that there was no way I was going to eat there.
#1. You are bringing glass on the line. Your phone breaks, you just screwed the entire line.
#2. Your phone is a bacteria magnet. If you touch your phone while you are cooking and you do not stop to wash your hands, you are potentially putting diners at risk.
#3. You are at work. Act like it. Leave your phone in the break room.

Thats silly, but obvious. I would never want to get flour or butter etc on the phone it never comes out of back pocket, theres already a no phones out except while on break rule anyways plus who has time when theyre making batches of desserts and breads, But humidity build up in kitchen is why im looking for such a case. There is no lockers in the bakery which I find odd but thats how it is.
Its just about protecting it from the added variables in a kitchen environment

It may be silly, but you definitely asked for an opinion from those of us who have worked in kitchens. I gave you mine.
Your phone should never be in the kitchen anyway. Leave it in your purse and problem solved. Beyond that, the Zerolemon rugged case offers decent protection (but is huge) or you can look on ebay for port plugs.
