Stock messaging app not working - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have recently had my messaging app stop working at each time i try to open it after i did a back up from titanium backup. I have tried using Go Sms Pro as a substitute and it receives and sends messages but i cannot see any of the messages after they have been sent or received. I have tried using different SecMms.apk files like others have said but have had no luck. Tried clearing cookies and date from application manager and restarting the phone but have had no luck. Is there anything that i can do to fix this issue?
have rooted Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 4.1.2 XXEMC2

Clearing the cache?
Factory Reset?

Still not working after doing both of those

clear cache, data and force stop messagging app and then restart. if that doesn't work, make a factory reset and then install another rom.

Does the message actually send? If do the person your messaging, delete the whole chat with that person and try again, should fix it.

Good thing you're rooted..
You need Root Explorer (or any other app that will allow you to push an apk to the system)
and download this SecMms.apk i extracted from wanamlite's XXDLJ1 base ROM: http://www.mediafire.com/download/24cli92xvlvpjd6/SecMms.apk
1 Put the SecMms.apk file on your SD Card
2 Open Root Explorer
3 Locate the SecMms.apk you downloaded
4 Long press the app and click Copy
5 Go to system/app/
6 Tick rw on the upper right
7 Click Paste
8 REBOOT

Unfortunately for you, a hard reset is probably the easiest way. Then do an app/data restore from Titanium again, but DON'T restore system apps this time!
can someone please post a messaging system app from titanium on sg2 so i can restore that?

You'll need to put this in the system/apps folder to reinstate it, but this may not fix the problem as there may be associated files that you also need. Only 1 way to find out
mmm, i sent it to myself in a email and downloaded and installed over the top, but still no good.

You'll need to hard reset then. Since you have a backup to restore, it'll only take 5 minutes. Like I said, just don't restore system apps.
ill try one more thing, installing root explorer and see if i delete all the old stuff and install then.

You're not actually trying to install the apk by running it, are you?
tried to haha. but now i deleted the original via root explorer then uploaded the one you gave me back in there
didnt work gahh. it doesnt think the app exists now..
I hate to sound like a broken record, but do a hard reset. If you'd have done it earlier, you'd be using your phone by now
- how do i do a hard reset?

Request for some apps file

Hi guys,
I have recently make a wrong decision with my Gs2. I tried to use Titanium backup to change All Sharing and Social Hub as a User Application. And that result in these apps disappear from my phone. I tired to put the dlna.apk and social-hub.apk back to the "system/app" while nth new come back after a reboot. I think that's because i miss the odex file related to the apps. As I am using Offical Hong Kong Rom KG2, would somebody like to help me by uploading those files [dlna, social hub apk&odex]
Thanks

I have tried this list and put those apk in to system/app, yet the program have not come back even after a reboot.....
I use Root Explorer for installing .apk files.
Can you not download Social Hub and DNLA via Samsung Apps?

I got those APKs from the list you have posted.
And install them by using root explorer
My way to install is to move from sdcard to "/system/app"
I even changed the permission of the apks but still they don come back
thanks!

I never move them before installing - just put them on internal SD and install from there. Try it?

Try applications>manage applications>clear cache and maybe clear data for those apps if they are there.
Otherwise I'm out of ideas...

Good luck. Don't suppose you've got a full backup via CWM or you'd have reflashed it, right?

yeah, and gonna try to flash some awesome rom too
Attached are both apps' apk & odex files.
Hope it helps mate
I don't think you can install system files with root explorer, you need to flash it through recovery. I was having the same problem and flashing worked for me.

You just push them to the /system/app/ folder and reboot - that's all a recovery zip would do.
Thx Guys!!!!
My finally method was reflash the official rom..... that nearlly kill me as i have to reorder the application icon which take me an hour to finish that....
I don know how to use the recovery method but hope this post would help others who face the same problems.
Btw is there any apps to backup the order of icon in Application page? Rearranging them again is damn horrible if u got tons of apps......

Cannot install titanium in xxlfb

Hi, since flashing xxlfb today titanium backup stopped working, I tried reinstalling it but it gives me insufficient space (wtf?)
Anyone knows what the hell is this about? Thx

Easiest way to fix this
1. Download Rom Toolbox Lite
2. Click on Root Browser
3. Click on "data"
4. Click on "app"
5. Look for the keramidas.TitaniumBackup apk and delete that file. Normally does not have an icon picture. This should sort you out. Post if it doesn't work for you.
*cough* Remove /data/app/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup.odex if it exists *cough*

Can we put S3 S-voice on S4?

I have a weird question. I now have a Verizon S4, ME7 baseband, rooted. I used to have a S3. I use s-voice via Bluetooth dialing for voice dialing and texting all the time. It worked flawlessly on my S3 but sucks on the S4. It won't find some contacts, despite reading the names back to me perfectly while telling me it didn't find them.
I remember trying the S4 apk on the S3 when the S4 apk was released and finding it didn't work well for me. I reverted back to the stock S3 s voice.
My question now is, can I do the reverse? Can I put the S3 S-voice on the S4? Does anyone have the latest S3 s-voice apk? I don't have the S3 anymore (nor would I know how to get the apk off if I did).
Thanks

I use apps from the s3 and note 2 all the time, most work and for those that don't I use apktool to mod them to work. In the case of s voice I imagine the app will natively work and it sounds like samsung tts doesn't have much to do with your issue. Im not at home to test or post it but you could always download a stock gs3 rom and extract s voice from it to try.

Thank you. Excuse me for my ignorance: how do I extract an apk from a ROM? Is there a reference for me to follow or is it simple enough for you to post instructions? I've installed ROM's in the past but never actually worked on them.

Good point, that reminds me, in order to install s voice you will have to push the app to system and change the permissions. Hey OP if you don't know how to do this let me know, id make you a zip but I believe you're on me7 correct?

Omph, thanks for detailing the need to change the permissions. I always read about people doing that, but have never done it. A zip would be awesome, but yes, I'm on me7 - does that mean you can't make one? If nobody else makes the zip, I'll read up on changing permissions.

Unfortunately since your on me7 I cant make you a zip also you won't be able to make a nandroid back up either. This is because me7 doesn't allow you to have a custom recovery. Changing the permissions is pretty straight forward though, just make it match the other apps in the system/app folder, you'll also have to mount the system folder r/w.

Thanks for all your help. I extracted the file - called "Voicetalk" as far as I can tell. I pasted it into the system app folder using Root Explorer, changed the permissions, and nothing happened. I then realized that maybe I need to actually run the installer - tapping the file (which did indeed have the S3 S-Voice icon) gave me the option to install. I ran the installer, it showed the permissions, and then it failed to install with the only message showing: "Application not installed".
I deleted the app from the system folder.
I then tried again by first freezing the native S-Voice app. I tried installing the apk directly from the SD card and had the same result - not installed.
So, unless I am doing it incorrectly, I think the S3 S-voice will not install directly onto the S4. Any ideas as to a way to make it work?
Thanks

What you originally did was fine, just rename the original s-voice .apk to .bak then do what you originally did (move the s3 s-voice .apk to /system/app then change permissions) then reboot your phone. Also you can check to make sure the owner is root for both owner and group. I think it might have worked had you just rebooted. Alternativley you can just copy and paste the apk to your internal sd then use rom toolbox and go to app manager, tap the upper left corner (where it shows a little rubix cube android person) then go down to + APK Installer and select the s-voice apk that you copied to your internal sd card. Afterward check in app manager and make sure s-voice is a system app, if not convert it to a system app. Remeber to reboot your phone after it installs. If all else fails send me the .apk and ill figure it out and/or mod it to work.
You ROCK!!
Thank you very much for your help. The key was this line you wrote: "just rename the original s-voice .apk to .bak " I had not done that and the S3 version would not install. Once I renamed the original s-voice, I was able to install the S3 version. Rebooted, and voila. Now it recognizes, without a hitch, the names that the S4 version was unable to find. So now I'm in business!
