I have a small echo-like noise now that I hear during phone calls on my phone. I think it is a hardware issue because I don't hear it on my bluetooth headset. I called Verizon 800 number the other night because I was wondering about the 4G outage and mentioned my audio problem while I was on the phone with her. She said if I call back from another phone, tech support would connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem, and if its unfixable they would send me another Thunderbolt.
I am wondering if I need to unroot before I do this....would tech support be able to tell if my phone was rooted and thus void the warranty and not be able to do anything for me? What should I do?
Bare minimum I'd install the stock rom on there, I don't believe they would dig far enough to see if fastboot is unlocked.
As for the title question Yes, they can tell if rooted.
I don't think they can tell Cuz I called yesterday Cuz my screen is messing up they called me back on another line and wanted me to do a factory reset but didn't know that I was already on GB

The only thing I can think of, and I'm no expert or anything so this is just a guess, is that they could look at the software version of the phone, and if it isn't the latest, or a previous release for this phone, then they could speculate that you are rooted, though I don't think that alone would hold up in court if it ever came to that.
When the support rep told the OP that they would "connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem", I think they were going by the standard "don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.
Can they remotely connect to our phones ? I wasn't aware that they could.

Correct, that's what they said ("don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.)
So should I still unroot to be safe before I call them or no....
What ROM are you using ?

If you want to be on the safe side, make a nand backup, flash a stock ROM, call them, then restore the backup. I'll pretty sure they can't tell if you have a custom recovery.

Don't know how they do it, (simple user here) and not the first time I've seen this asked or answered. If you're bored jump on every TB forum your on and I'm sure you'll find your curiosity satisfied. Maybe it was on BAMF? I could care less how they do it. (No ins here) Call technical support and ask them what rom your on and how dare they know that.

Liquid AOSP 3.2.
I unrooted just to be safe and the tech rep never said anything and I got them to send me a new sim card and if that doesn't solve my problem (which I don't think it will), then they will send me a new thunderbolt.
When I rooted again after the phone call it wouldn't let me restore my rom and I got stuck in a boot loop. Luckily I had rom zip's on my sd card, so I installed one from scratch, reflashed cwm via rom mgr again, then it let me restore it.
Very weird, and I was terrified I jacked my phone up.

Hmm keep looking, I won't be at a pc till tomorrow maybe. But like I said I have no way to confirm only what I've read which is what I do. And that was second hand information. As most of this is. I'm really trying to remember because I know these site searching's are lacking at best.
I just recently used to work for at&t customer care and if vzw is anything like them, the only way they can maybe tell is if you have an unlimited data plan plus unofficial tethering app. Or if you send it in for warranty/Asurion replacement. Otherwise i don't really see how they could see in any way if it was rooted

That is understandable, thank you. Still gotta get to my pc. I know people have called in on their rooted devices for certain reasons and been called out only to deny. And of course unroot before going in. For whatever reason. Sticking to it.
That's why I asked what ROM. A support rep could simply tell the person to read them a version # that will be different than "stock".

From what i understand both of those have broken 4g and i can't deal with that. i am just stock rooted with some various tweaks here and there, but there is no way to steal some files to help stock boot like that. I mean on the htc phones it is a check box in the settings menu. Sorry i am no good at coding and just have no time with work to really take on a project like this. If anybody knows of a way to do it, i would be willing to make a donation, but i need 4g to work.

Hello all, I was walking my friend through rooting his phone over Google talk. He rooted all went well a few days later he wanted to Rom it. He made a mistake and flashed the international omega Rom on his US ATT samsungi747. His phone is now dead. No way to get into recovery or download mode. Just dead. Bricked. What can I do to help him? As I am partially responsible cause I was helping him. I did not know much about the Rom he was flashing.
I was reading about a possible fix with a jig but can not find a jig for.the Samsung i747.
Please any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

A compatible jig may be your only solution if you can't get into download mode manually. A jig would force the phone into download mode, once in download mode you'd be able to flash the stock AT&T firmware through Odin.

If you didnt know a rom could brick a phone you shouldnt be flashing period. Theres always ALWAYS bold letters that says this may brick your phone an or we are not responsible if this breaks your phone... no one with there first android should be flashing till they know android smoothly... *sigh*
Usually 90% of the time your always able to get into recovery mode. From what I've read this only happens when flashing the omega Rom. People make mistakes.
I've rooted and rom'd 100s of phones, and never not been able to get back to recovery.

I understand telling him to read. And he did so for about a week. He succesfully used odin to root his phone. A few days later he said he wanted to Rom, and asked me how to do a proper back up with titanium backup. I ran him through the backup procedure.
I mean I totally thought that if he made it through the rooting procedure that he was good to go. Rom'ing has always been to me something fairly easy, and if something went haywire, just boot to recovery.
I've had people ask for help that flashed an incomplete or corrupted download, but have always been able to at least power the phone on, or at the very least have it recongnized in adb.
I have been reading and googling about a fix, but information seems minimal on this current circumstance. So I reached out to the community for advice.

The DNA is an awesome phone; however, if your phone comes with the newest update from HTC on it, be aware, there is currently software-based (free) method to unlock bootloader or modify the phone at all. Users with updated phones that were not previously unlocked have had to resort to JTAG service (something like $45 plus shipping) to have the phone S-OFF'ed (Radio S-OFF - Means you can flash whatever you please (even more so with the engineering bootloader flashed)).
If the phone prompts you for an update, DON'T DO IT! If the phone is already updated, you either wait and hope for someone to find a vulnerability, pay for JTAG service, or use the phone stock (still a good phone, but no root).
Good luck!

Root/Bootloader status:
firmware 1.x - fully blown open
firmware 2.x - locked tighter that a dolphin's butthole.
It will probably come with the 2.x software. I would recommend using the JTAG service provided here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-droid-dna-dlx-jtag-s-off-modification-service/
Difference between a nexus and the dna... A world.
The gnex was made to open from the beginning. Running one fastboot command opened the entire floodgate, plus odin is an awesome tool for samsung devices. HTC devices have more parts that need to be cracked to have the same openess as the nexus. Right now 2.x firmware means you are running stock only (no root or anything). I'm coming from the gnex and was willing to pay for the jtag service because although I love the dev's work on this phone, I don't want to rely on them for everything.
Hope this helps.
Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

No HTCdev, no unlock of bootloader of any kind currently.

Like other post, i would say know that you will not have root for a bit and cm 10.1 is not done yet...but will be soon. You can go for JTAG or stick with stock or use nova launcher temporarily. The battery life is pretty decent but nothing crazy 4 hours of screen time-ish on stock. i usually get enough battery for 1 day and a few hours. Oh, fastboot will prevent a full restart of your phone so might want to disable that...and yea just look around settings. there are ways to increase battery and stuff. for example, there is a settings in wifi that allows it to auto turn off and use data unless you start using your phone. I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

Same here. I love CM and AOSP/AOKP, but I tire of them pretty quick. I honestly don't understand the HTC Sense hate some people have. If it was that bad then everyone wouldn't be trying to find widgets that looked like the sense widgets on CM/AOSP. Sense is a really nice looking UI and their widgets are second to none.
I'm pretty much decided on sending out my DNA to be JTAG'd. How long can I expect to be without a phone? I think i'll be stuck using my rezound with just google voice.

All I know is that Sammy makes it hard as frick to root their phones, so I'll most likely stay with HTC.
^^^^^ while I agree with sticking with HTC, what, on earth, gives you the impression it's hard to get root on Sammy devices. My experience with GNex, and all I've read, shows sammys are the easiest to root.

Bro....
My brother has the GS4 through Verizon, and there are like 6 different versions.
Rooting wasn't the issue, as I rooted it for him easily. The issue was "bootstrap", "Safestrap", "modems", and other terminology.
Not what I'm used to. He's rooted, but you cannot flash AOSP ROM'S with their locked bootloaders. You can only flash stock ROMS, and you have to use "Safestrap", which apparently makes multiple partitions and you have to keep your original stock ROM.
And then there is Loki, and Odin, whatever the hell those are. I'm guessing for unlocked bootloaders, but I haven't got that far yet.
Friend of mine from work blames Verizon, saying they try to seriously lock down their phones.

Well, not what I was hoping for. But, they say that about the G5.
All I know is that Sammy makes it hard as frick to root their phones, so I'll most likely stay with HTC.

I don't know about Samsung devices (on Sprint) but I know rooting my HTC wasn't too bad, but flashing it was a different story.
I'm not sure how much Truth is in that whole story. I mean, who can be THAT foolish? If it was me, I would make sure hat my kids don't even talk about it at school. Shoot...I might not even tell them.
Furthermore, whether this is true or not, this still provides HTC with premature feedback from users who want to see what the M8 will look like. While it is too late for them to make physical changes to the phone, at least they can try to make a few software changes to the phone. For example, I'm sure that someone is going to criticize the camera app. Based on the general consensus, they can make the needed modifications. This video has brought much attention to HTC, whether negative or positive, and there's nothing that good ol' Sammy can do about it.
Did I mention that this is FREE advertising? That's something that HTC never did very well with, and funding has a lot to do with it. I'm not saying that this story can't be true, but I certainly feel that there are more factors at play under the hood.
And to add to those who have said that Samsung is difficult to root, I beg to differ. Once I downloaded the correct files to the computer, it took me 2mins to root my wife's GS3 with an auto root tool. I had to do a lot more work to root my EVO. Mind you, I'm not saying that my EVO was difficult to rllt, but i also had to obtain S-Off in a separate process. You just have to root a Samsung and you're good to go.

They didn't, he made that up along with the other lies on his twitter after the video was traced back to him. His father works for a company that does soil testing (http://tsccorp.com) and his mother is a school teacher. I doubt that either would have access to the phone through their work.

I don't know who he got it from, but it wasn't one of his parents. Could be another relative, friend's parent, etc.
