Notification sounds sometimes silent?? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I've got a stock Verizon S4, and I'm using the stock Messaging app. Sometimes, I get audible notifications when a new SMS message arrives, but often I don't. I cannot consistently reproduce the problem. I just tried rebooting, and the first message I got after the reboot only vibrated, even though notification volume is set to 7/7.
Gmail and Mail apps seem to behave as expected--audible notification on first new email received, but no audible notifications for subsequent until I check email...then first message received after the check is audible again.
Messaging app will sometimes give an audible alert for every message received, even if there are other unchecked messages already presernt (which is what I want), and sometimes will not alert for any message, whether it's the first unchecked or not.
I do use Llama, but I've confirmed that the "Normal" profile is active, and I've manually checked all the volumes and they're set where they're supposed to be. (All are 5/7 or higher.)
Anyone else have any issues with Messaging notifications?

Whoops...apparently it _is_ Llama. (More specifically, apparently it's the default Samsung messaging app, and how it reacts to the way most automatic sound profile-changing apps (including Llama) handle vibration settings.)
I'd searched for threads on this problem before I posted, but apparently not well enough. Found this one today: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261746&page=2
For Llama users, the dev has figured out why the S4 acts differently, and has a beta version of Llama available to handle it. Check out the June 24, 2013 post on the dev's blog, here: http://kebabapps.blogspot.com/ .
Thanks to user kanahpoo in the referenced thread above for the pointer.

Appointment Notifications - Can they repeat until answered?

The appointment notification only sounds once, whereas the alarm chime can be set to repeat until answered (dismissed). Can the appointment notification be set to repeat until answered? ....so that when I come back into the office after being outside, I will here a chime or alarm and suddenly remember the forgotten appointment?
Would make sense but NO!
I keep whining about notifications... missed calls, voice mail, and appointments. No dice.
There are some third party software pieces out there that do appointment repeat alarms, can't remember the name off hand but saw it in several places. Something fairly popular.
Nice and vague!
No dice on the phone part on repeat notifications. Which to me just seems whacky.
Don't you guys try to solve the problem before asking for it?????????????
Yes you can set the appointments alarm to repeat go to sounds and notifications, notification, choose from the drop down menu reminder and check the (repeat) checkbox.
and there is also a third party software called sbp pocket plus
Cheers
Msg to ArcticCat re. appointment notifications
My version of software does NOT appear to have an option to 'Repeat' the notification (the only options are Play Sound; Display Message; Flash Light; and Vibrate)....and yes, I did go through every menu item several times before lodging the question, and felt that I must have missed something!
My Pocket PC version is 3.0.12039....... perhaps I need to upgrade my software. What version is yours?
Thanks for the info. re. third party software....I will look into it.
Regards, Paul
You can search for "How to Enable Repeat Play Audio Sound Notifications in Windows Mobile"
and you will eventually find the solution to this repeat notifications question!

[Q] Duplicate SMS Notifications

Nevermind.. Solved it.
Could you post the Q&A for others who may search this? I was JUST posting about duplicates in another SMS thread.
I'd assume it's just because he has multiple apps that alert him when an SMS arrives. If you download handcent you'll get 2 notifications unless you turn them off on one of the apps.
Ahh, I'm getting the same sms messages a few times in the stock app... I'm guessing its user error on their end since it does not happen all of the time.
I've been using Handcent since day one and I made sure to turn notifications off on the default SMS app. Apparently Beautiful Widgets was causing me to get notifications from both apps even though alerts were turned off. Uninstalled the beautiful widgets app and everything returned to normal. Dunno what went wrong.

Gmail notifications not notifying?

I get hundreds of emails every day and I currently get a notification but no audio tone or vibrate as it would be going crazy. This is how I want my general email notifications set up. So that part is fine. What I do want however is for starred messages to play a tone/vibrate similar to my text messages. I went into Gmail and then Manage Labels within the menu and I confirmed that 'Starred' is set to sync all and ring, vibrate, notify once. This to me seems like it should be notifying the way I just described that I'm looking for but there is no different notification for starred messages the way I had hoped. What am I doing wrong here?
Anyone? I can't seem to get this to work no matter what I do.

[Q] Is it possible to receive an SMS nofication sound w/o icon or pull-down message?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Here is my pseudo-complicated situation: I have a gate sensor at the front of my property that communicates wirelessly to my automation system. The system can then notify me via text or email anytime my gate sensor is tripped. I would like for my phone to simply act as a doorbell by just making a sound anytime someone drives through my gate. So far I have accomplished this but unfortunately for my organized & partially OCD brain, my phone's notification bar is overloaded with messages that I have to clear several times per day. Basically, I would like for it to make a sound but not to show any icon or notification in the pull-down notifications menu.
I have tried several SMS apps (Handcent, GO SMS Pro, Chomp, Textra and stock) and have been unable to find a way to accomplish this. The closest thing I've found is to use the "privacy inbox" on several of these apps that allows me to place any messages from the automation system into a different inbox. I'm able to give it a different sound, different icon and different (or no) LED blink color. Unfortunately, this still leaves my notifications pull-down menu riddled with alerts from my gate sensor.
I don't know if there is an Android-based work-around or if anyone can recommend a decent SMS app that would give me this option. I have tried the same thing with email but not only do I run into the same problem, but the delay in the syncing of the email defeats the purpose because the person will usually already be at my door before I hear the tone. Because of this, I would like to stick with the SMS method.
There may also be another option that is outside the box that I have yet to consider.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

Problems with notifications on S9+

So i own 2 businesses and its VERY important I get my Ebay app notifications, Paypal app Notifications, and Gmail notifications, as fast as possible. 24/7. No delay. No Sleep mode. No Hibernation. I want the messages to come through just like a phone call or text.
I smart switched my S8+ over to my S9+. I wanted to make sure I had the S9 + set up and settings exactly before I activated it. So I thought i had the S9+ setup and working just fine on my WIFI. So my S9+ is up and running on my Wifi.
However, I have noticed that when the S9+ screen is off for extended period of time....I DO NOT GET MY GMAIL EMAILS or my EBAY or paypal NOTIFICATIONS until I pickup the phone and turn the screen on. Its like its in some type of sleep mode, do not disturb mode, or hibernation mode even though its not set up like that. This is absolutely frustrating. I need to be able to respond to my customers instantly and as fast as possible otherwise it can cost me sales.
-Do not disturb mode is off
-I added gmail paypal and ebay to the list of apps that should be allowed to use battery all the time with no sleep
-I have notifications set as high importance in all apps and in notifications
Any help or suggestions????
I dont want to have to physically turn my phone screen on to be able to see these important notifications.
thanks
It is Android Doze at mischief. First make sure that the phone is not actively putting those apps to sleep.
Device Maintenance > Battery > Unmonitored apps / Always sleeping apps (scroll down to bottom)
Make sure that those apps are not under "Always sleeping apps." If that does not fix, put those apps to "Unmonitored apps."
Also make sure that each apps are set to receive notification in timely manner.
Open Email, go to settings. It's the gear icon at the top when you swipe from the left in the Email app.
1. Make sure Notification is checked on the first page.
2. Go to individual email accounts.
3. Check the "Sync Settings," and make sure the sync setting is set to "Auto (when received)."
Go to phone's Settings > Apps. Find each apps (eBay, PayPal, etc.) and click on them. You will see "App Info" that tells you how much mobile data, battery, storage the apps consume. Go below to find "App Settings." Click on "Notifications," and make sure that things are correctly checked.

I have done all that (except for using the basic email app) . As mentioned above. But it does not fix the issue.
I just want to use the GMAIL app for my Email. I don't want to use the phone Email app.
It does not allow you to add Gmail to the list of unmonitered battery apps I noticed too. But Ebay paypal and my other messaging apps are defiantly on there.
I don't have my Gmail synced to the stock email on my S8+ and my emails still come through with Gmail notifications instantly.
Any other suggestions???
Notification Issues.
There are definitely problems with the notification system on the S9. I've spent a couple of hours on the phone with Samsung Support and they have been unable to fix it. Hoping to get a software update that fixes it.

Yeah I spent an hour with Sprint tech support . They say it shouldn't be doing this. They have no idea why its doing it. They even did remote view to check all the settings. Let me know if you figure it out.
Should of expected this.
Anybody else?
What about msgs (SMS, MMS, IM), are they coming through timely?

Its not activated so I haven't gotten any text. Just working with it right off Wifi.
So Snapchat seemed to work
Now Ebay is working sporadically
Paypal still wont notify unless the screen is on
Gmail. sporadically too
I also was having intermediate problems with notifications. It seems once I disabled the "easy mute" option in advanced features, I'm getting notifications instantly now. Might be worth a shot to try.

Do you also have the setting in gmail to notify you for every email? Inside gmail settings, click your email, then under the notifications section click "inbox notifications" then make sure "notify for every message" is checked.

Ok, I see that but I noticed its not set up on my S8+ like that. That way I don't get bugged every 2 seconds with the promotional and social messages. Just notifies for all primary messages.
I'm also noticing some problems with notifications from my home security app, all Runtastic Pro apps and notification strip from Mi Home app. Is it Oreo related or is it a specific problem with Galaxy S9?
Received a text this morning on my Gear S3 with the default Messages app. Cleared the notification from my watch which would normally also clear the notification on the phone. Over 5 min later receive the same text on my S9+ also on the default messages app. There seems to be a fairly decent delay in the default sms app on the phone. S9+ is unlocked on Verizon. Gear S3 is Verizon version but I use it as Bluetooth/Wifi only so not connected to 4g network directly.
My S9+ is on Telus. I had to stop using the Samsung messages app a month or so after I got the phone. I stopped getting notifications. It'll buzz and light up but that's it. The icon doesn't have the notification badge (and I have it turned on in settings). I have it set to show a message preview but that doesn't show either. Facebook and Instagram notifications work about the same. It buzzes but that's it. Snapchat sometimes has the notification badge on the icon. The Samsung email app has to be set for notification of every email to show the icon badge.

The preview is working by turning it on and off and if my screen is on, the notification badge flickers very quickly when the message preview and edge lighting pop up....
For what its worth, if you're using a custom launcher like Nova, then you need to provide additional permissions (ex: Tesla Settings in case of Nova) for the Gmail app & other apps.
Also, you could try- 1) Reset app preferences from the app settings, 2) Remove Gmail cache & data and add your accounts again and 3) clear cache from recovery.
I had this problem, tried every solution mentioned here and elsewhere and ultimately discovered that the Data Saver settings were preventing my email app from checking for notifications. Once I exempted my email app, it began receiving notifications and the notification reminder was working fine.
Settings > Connections Data saver > Allow app while Data saver on
Every time I sat down at home to fix the issue, I'd uninstall a suspect app and notifications would work. Then I'd head out to work and they wouldn't work. Turns out the data saver only comes on away from my home wifi, naturally. This is why it was seemingly "fixed" by everything I tried at home.
