I encrypted all my files on my external SD card.
I then wiped and installed a new ROM.
Now i cannot read the files on my SD card.
Is this because it was all encrypted under the old ROM?
As far as I know the phone creates a unique key for the encryption, so you couldn't read the sd card in another phone. By changing the Rom you've effectively changed phone, so the sd card is locked.
Either format the card, if you don't need the data, or restore an earlier nandroid (if that will recreate the key) to access the card again if you need the data.

Hi,
I was wandering if anyone could have a list or even better a screenshot of the contents of the SD Card, supplied with the phone, when the phone has nothing installed or changed (Out of the box condition).
I am about to reset the factory defaults, but i guess this would only affect the internal memory, and if i wipe out all of the data from the sd card i could probably delete something importnat, this is why i need this information.
Thanks in advnace.
I believe that the sd card is empty out of the box and the phone will recreate folders on the sd card when you start it up after reformat. You are correct that you will lose your personal settings if you delete sd card contents. If you don't care about personal settings and want to make the phone like out of the box, then I think you can just wipe everything. I don't know what you're trying to fix, but you could do a selective backup of the data you want to restore with Titanium Backup. Like messages, phonebook, pics, call log, voice mail, apps. Then make a copy of the backup on your pc, and put it back on sd card once it's reformatted and do restore. I would also make a copy of the entire sd card before reformatting.
Yeah that is correct, the memory card is empty, however the phone will recreate the folders, you may however need to recreate the Music Folder but Im not too sure as when my memory card failed, I was using a custom rom. however make your backup via titnanium or my preferred method, MyBackup Root, then back up all contents of the sd card on your computer, once you formatted your sd then just insert it back into the phone, wait a while and then mount to the pc to see whats there and whats not
Out of box sd is formatted and blank, phone creates folders it needs. Have deleted many of these by trial and error and phone just recreates them on reboot.

I'm a custom ROM on Android 4.2.2 and used the Settings > Privacy > Encrypt phone feature. What exactly did this do, did the encrypt the internal SD card, the external SD card, the entire filesystem (i.e. root of filesystem), or some combination?
If it didn't encrypt my external SD card, how can I do so? But if it did, how can I access the contents of my external SD card (after providing my PIN/password) from a laptop when I put the SD card in it? Would I just mount it like I do any other encrypted USB drive with LUKS?
If not, then isn't it risky because if my phone gets broken and I must start from a new ROM, then I've lost my most recent data (backups could be a few days old). Or lets's say someone flashes a new ROM, the new ROM wouldn't be able to read the card, or would it be able to if you use the same PIN/password?

Encrypted internal /storage/sdcard0 cannot be read after installing new ROM while using same password, just checked.

Format your camera/phone memory card (including SD card, CF card, Micro SD card or MMC card and more) without data backups? Format camera/phone memory card before uploading stored data to computer or drive? Format your camera/phone memory card for unexpected errors? Don’t worry! Your memory card data is not completely lost as you think.
As long as this formatted memory card is not overwritten by anything else, your stored photos, music, videos, messages and more information can still be easily restored back with a memory card data recovery tool named 4Card Recovery, which is developed to help user rescue data back from all sorts of popular memory cards and USB drives. With its advanced four data recovery types and user-friendly interface, you often can rescue all your assigned data back with ease:
Step1. Free download and run 4Card Recovery on your computer. Just follow its Wizard directions carefully.
Step2. Insert your formatted memory card to your computer. Without a card Reader, you can load it back to your phone/camera and plunge the device to your PC.
Step3. Pick out a proper data recovery type from four. Every data recovery type always can offers different features for you.
Step4. Scan this connected memory card after clicking it in the device list.
Step5. Preview all scanned files and recover wanted ones only. The restored files are supposed to save on another memory card or drive in case of unnecessary loss.
Note: No matter what happens in the future, you should carefully update your data backups timely in case of similar data loss problems.

Hey everone,
I recently had to restore to factory defaults on my Z3. When I previously encrypted my phone, I didn't know that it also encrypted my SD card, I thought it was safe. Thus, when I went to restore some data after the reset, I couldn't access the data on my card. So, I'm asking if this is the proper method to restore data after factory resetting the Z3 with encryption:
1. Copy data off encrypted phone and SD Card.
2. Reset to factory defaults.
3. Reformat SD Card.
4. Encrypt the phone and SD Card.
5. Copy the data back to the newly encrypted SD Card.
Even though I used the same password to re-encrypt my phone and SD Card, I was not able to recover the data off the card. It was simply lost in encryption limbo. I assume this is how it is supposed to work even though the same password was used?
Hello there.
I have android phone with 9.0 firmware. When I bought the SD card and installed it, my phone asked me how I would use it.
I selected this variant:
Internal storage:
You can store apps and data for this device only. If you move the SD card to another device, the SD card will be erased ("formatted"). After the SD card is erased, you can use it with the other device.

The problem is that:
I got bootloop after some manipulations with firmware. So I had to make Factory Reset. Before that I've removed SD card from phone. And now I can't use this SD, because it's ext4 and something like "protected". My PC can't open disk even with ext4 reading tools. When I install this SD to the phone, it asks to formate SD and select the option of use.
How can I get back my data from this SD card?
