[Q] Flashing from SD Card a Bad Idea? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

A bit new to this, but already a ROM-flashing addict.
I've been having some stability issues with sbreen94's fantastic Hyperdrive ROM. On both RLS 4 & RLS 5. It looks like I'll install things correctly, and the system will reboot, but upon the second reboot of the system I'll consistently bootloop and be stuck on the Samsung Custom Unlocked screen. Has anyone on this forum resolved a similar issue? A friend of mine suggested that it's because I'm loading the ROM zip file onto my SanDisk micro SD card, and then flashing from that. However, I both md5 checked the original download, and the version loaded onto my microsd card.
Thanks for the help!

You must flash a loki kernel. Try a different one. Also you can flash a rom from the extsdcard...so your friend is wrong there.

Thanks. Yes, I'm using the latest TWRP. I suppose I can switch over to CWM and see if that's more stable. Is it true that I can just flash the CWM mod directly from TWRP recovery? What will happen to my TWRP backups?

The backups are compatible, you'll be ok. And yes you can flash the recovery right from twrp..

I always download the roms on my laptop and then moved to the ext sdcard and i dont have any problem....

I download, flash, backup, and restore all from my phones external SD. I keep the OG stock backup on internal storage for unexpected emergencys....
I do this on my phone and tablet, so using the external SD card is just fine.

i flash from the sd card using twrp, no issues at all.

Bad downloads maybe. Always check the MD5 before flashing. You can use "Android file verifier" to check on device.

P500 stopped reading SD Card

Hey there guys.
I have been using my phone everyday with no problems - currently using CM7 by Mik.
Anyways, I put some songs into my SD Card through USB yesterday and I went on with my day, no problems.
I got home, and I notice the SD card was removed. I reset my phone but now my phone does not recognize the SD card.
I tried the SD card on my sister's Android phone and it works perfectly. I can't even get the USB connection to work.
How do I go about fixing this? I tried getting in through the Android SDK, still no luck. I tried mounting via recovery and no such luck also.
Any help would be great, thanks.
just flash the rom which u are using (u said mik's rom) from recovery without formatting system and without any data or cache wipe, i think that should work.
Your data will be as it is but u need to flash again the zip files u flashed after rom install previously (like google apps zip file from mik, ap2sd zip file, any theme zip file etc. whatever u flashed previously).

Hey there.
Sorry if this sounds stupid, but how do I flash a ROM without an SD card?

Is it a problem with the phone itself?
Did it gave an error or nothing happened
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
use a different sd card and see if u r able to flash from recovery
Nothing happened, just says "no such directory" or SD card cannot be found.
No error or anything.
I put my SD card into my sister's Android and it still works. I used her SD card and it doesn't work on my phone but it works on hers.
I think it's the ROM or the phone itself. How do I go about flashing the phone through the PC without an SD card? Or how do I flash a ROM from recovery without SD card?
Wipe everything afterbackup and try usb storage it may work

Also, if it is a problem with the SD card and I wipe everything and still don't have access to it, will I be able to still a flash a ROM some way or will my phone be bricked?

I think u should flash stock rom from lgmdp.
follow "cook your custom rom" till step 2
cook your custom rom- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901417
(disable lg modem before start)
Now start lgmdp and
select port
select image folder the created "stockrom" folder
Now uncheck "recovery image" option (to have custom recovery retained)
then download.
(donot disconnect untill it shows download complete)
Note: i didnot test it , but i think it should work.

[Q] Can't mount SD card on recovery

Hi all. Used the search tool but couldn't find nothing similar.
My ATRIX is unlocked, rooted, running stock gingerbread. I used the automatic script for unlocking bootloader and rooting. I guess it installed Tenfar's recovery too. I installed Rom Manager some time ago, and today I have CWM Recovery 5.0.2.0. So I wanted to switch to romracer's in order to install a custom rom (maybe neutrino or wet dream, something with hdmi landscape =).
I was trying to instal romracer's recovery this morning. I'd put the .zip on my ext sdcard, but when I tried to use the "Install fom SD card" in RomManager, all I could see was the internal storage files. So I went ahead and transferred the .zip to internal storage root. Used Install from SD card again, selected the .zip. The phone rebooted, got into recovery mode.
That's when the problem came. It keeps waiting for SD card to mount, and then times out (20s). Is this sdcard trying to mount the EXT microSD? Why he needs it, since the .zip is in internal storage?
Any ideas on how to solve this? Am I doing something wrong here? Thank you very much. sorry providing so much information, thought it could be useful.
edit: additional information: I can see and use the external sd card on the phone normally. Can acces it via USB too, no problem.
Where exactly are you stuck? You say you managed to flash a zip and then rebooted the phone, right? So where are you now?
What filesystem is your SD card formatted in?
Boot to fastboot and flash recovery from fastboot.

When it reboots and automatically enters recovery, it says it cannot mount the SD card. So it doesn't actually flashes the zip, I guess. I'm where I begun.
Windows says its "FAT". Not FAT32, just FAT. Its a small (512mb) microsd card from my old phone. Should I format it? Maybe its just too small to use in this phone?
Thanks for your reply.

Vibrant wont go pass the Splash

Hello guys I think my Vibrant just passed away.
After installing the new ROM 2.11 PA and few apps I had backed up with titanium my Vibrant lost its SD Card. It wont find it and it will stay looping at the CWM menu and nothing else. Os after few tries to recover I decided to Odin and start over but all I get is the splash menu and power off
Im not a median loader. I think I have plenty of experience as I have root phones about 200 times. Load ROMs about 500 times easy.
But this one is biting me. It just wont go to recovery or bootup..
All Im able to do is to ODIN de phone successfully and get it to Download mode and recovery mode. Other then that it just dont do anything else but showing me the splash and go black screen.
Any ideas?

It only goes to stock recovery and download mode after I odin and it pass!!
but the phone wont pass through the splash as it goes blank. Before had a problem with not detecting the SD Card as well
I have tried ODIN and Lidroid http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058802
But none of them are able to get me back fully pass the splash.
If you are using eclair in the odin pda, you might search and download this pda, dont tick repartition...Eugene_2E_jk2_froyo.tar. Hard to say Im not familiar with the rom you flashed.
If you have download, you'll find an answer.
I had a very similar situation with my vibrant and treated it as the eu bug, get an external sd, partition it and install Rom from stock recovery, depending on the type of rom you are wanting to run, you will have to make a modification to the vold.fstab file. If you tell me the ostensibly you will be running I can further help you on the edits to be done to the file. (editing the vold.fstab file will allow the phone and apps to recognize your partitioned sd card in the same way it usually sees you internal sd.)

Here is the vold.fstab file for jb roms, however if you aren't using the external sd install I mentioned you shouldn't need it, if so just paste this over the existing file in /system/etc.
Thanks mate but I cant install any roms because the phone cant read the SD Card :crying:
Hopefully this isn't your issue but if it is, here is a workaround for EU bug. It says captivate but its the same for vibe.

I would use this method if I didnt had any problems at frojo stock. If the phone cant read the SD card then means I wont be able to root or do anything in the phone as it wont read the SD card. :crying:

Ok I put the Eugene Frojo again to try formatting the sd card and I got this when I attempted
Code:
Your Storage is not ready yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
Why are you trying to format the SD card? How are you trying it (in Rom Manager or on PC). Either way, STOP!!! That is part of what is messing things up. The ROM Manager format and partition options do not work correctly.
What is it that you are ultimately trying to do? Please don't say "seeing storage". That is a symptom of the problem. It seems that you are trying too many things at once. What is your goal here and once we know that, it will be better for us to diagnose your problem.

Hello mate, all Im trying to do is to access the SD Card so I can put the update file to root and the roms I want to flash. Another thing is I cant install anything because is not detecting the Internal SD card. I cant even take photos because the same reason. and due to this same reason is not detectting neither the external micro sd.

Flash ZIP From SD Card - Not Displayed

Hey everyone.
I think I may have run into a small hiccup trying to flash my Android device. I'm trying too root a Bell Canada Galaxy Note - I717M.
I managed to find a ZIP file containing CWM recovery image, Superuser, and ODIN Flasher. I loaded these files in the root folder of the INTERNAL (16GB) memory card on the device. (Not an EXTERNAL SD)
As my first step I flashed the CWM rar file in Odin under "PDA" - The device reset and next I booted into Clockwork Mod. Now in the ClockMod menu, the option to "Flash ZIP from SD Card" is not displayed.
I don't currently have an SD card inserted. Does these mean that I would have to reflash CWM entirely? Or perhaps I performed the procedure incorrectly by copying the files to the Internal Storage card?
Even though the Recovery menu did install, is the missing option a result of the device needing to be rooted FIRST, prior to CWM installation?
I'm a little confused so any help would be appreciated. Would I just be looking at a complete REFLASH with Odin after inserting an EXTERNAL SD? Or just placing the files on the external SD Card (once inserted), booting back into CWM and selecting "Install from ZIP"? (If it becomes available)
My main objective is simply to root the device. I'm not looking to install a custom ROM at the moment ... just perform a simple root.
Thanks for everyone's time.
Canadian notes have an extra step.

Thank you so much for the link. I completely would have missed that. I just want to be sure I'm doing this correctly now that there is this "extra step"
The procedure says "If you have an Offending Script" from an OTA ICS UPGRADE
To be honest I'm not sure if this device was upgraded to 4.0 via KIES or OTA. As I bought the phone already running 4.0.4.
Would that make any difference to the procedure outlined in the link? (E.g. Step 7)
Just to clarify. If the phone is supposed to "Reinstall stock recovery" than why would I still be able to boot into CWM?
Thanks for the help :good:
Install from SD is external
Install from internal SD is internal
CWM probably doesn't detect the external and just removes that option

Sounds reasonable. Forgive me, I've been off Android for a while now. Just beginning to get back into the swing of things.
I reapplied CWM in Odin. Same result. Although what I thought as CWM is in-fact stock recovery. I'll give the method in the link a shot.

Kernels...

Okay, so as a new Android user, I've so far experienced my first phone, annoying stock apps/ROMs, the joys and hazards of rooting and installing custom ROMs, and experimenting with advanced settings and utilities.
Now, I think, I am ready for kernels.
I bought an OTG cable, and I cannot get my exFAT drive to show up. My coworker says it's because I have a stock kernel.
Does anyone know what kernel I need?
I'm using a VZW GS4 with CM 10.1 RC2 rooted.
Also, providing me with links where I can learn this ish would be awesome. Thanks!

Personally I would just recommend re-formatting your card to Fat32 as it's super easy (literally takes like 60 seconds), and you won't run into any problems where your phone won't read it.
Here is a reasonably easy guide on it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773735
Otherwise you need a kernel that will recognize Exfat, which now there are alot more than there used to be due to the source code being released.
Out of all the custom kernels for the S4 I would recommend KT747 most highly. It is without doubt the most popular kernel for the S4 and has enough features to keep you busy for weeks. Plus it's always being updated. If you do not want to reformat your card to Fat32 this kernel will read it. Here is the thread for it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2294083
I would highly highly recommend installing TWRP recovery instead of CWMR as it's much easier to use and just a better recovery in my opinion. It doesn't have a problem with Exfat either. To install it just download the app Goomanager from the play store. Open it, grant it root privileges , then hit menu, then "installopenrecoveryscript" it will automatically install TWRP recovery over CWMR.
Good luck.

A strange thing about cwm recognizing exfat is that when I re-loki'd cwm 6.0.3.2 touch and made my own flashable zip it finally recognized my exfat card and allowed me to make back ups, etc. I don't remember if I made any other changes or not, I made a lot of flashable recoveries yesterday (see here ) also I cant get it to work on any other version of cwm. Like I said, your best bet is to just reformat your card to fat32 and then you don't have to worry about it, and you won't need a custom kernel or different recovery just to be able to use the card. In that link I gave there is basically a one click tool to reformat to fat32. It's incredibly easy.

This isn't an internal SD card. I bought on OTG cable. I have a thumbdrive I want to move files between on and off my phone with (Basically a music and movie repository).
I cannot get the drive to mount on my phone. I was told it's because of the kernel. It's currently formatted exFAT.
