When you see the preview on your lockscreen, click the preview, then swipe on the transparent/white box that appears. This will take you to the new message.
Also, at least from my experience, when I click on the message notification in the pull-down it takes me to that message.

Hi,
I just flashed my ROM and the message icon on the front page (today screen) occasionally shows that I have one or 2 messages in my SMS/Text area, but there in fact is nothing at all inside (folder is empty). How do I refresh and remove the number 1 or 2 icon next to the message image on the SMS today screen?
Thanks for your help.

Gotcha And Is there a way you can add custom sounds to the Alarm or for Incoming text messages? I searched other areas of the forums and I converted it to .wav, however, the file still wont appear in the Alarm "Ringtone" dropdown box. This is the same case for text messages under Settings > Sounds and Notifications as well
EDIT: I guess I'll use gAlarm. If anyone has a cab or fix for the SMS/Text issue im having that would be great. I'm using Shpes rom. Thanks.

No there's nothing there. Does anyone have any ideas please? It shows "1" message in the SMS/MMS Inbox but there isn't anything in the folder. On the bottom it displays SMS/MMS 0 Items.
EDIT: I've also tried using the "Clear SMS/MMS message tool under settings, however, there seems to be 1 message stuck and I cant get the icon off my today screen Any help would be appreciated.
May be you can just text yourself a msg , and when you receive your own msg , see if the icon makes any change .
Is their anybody out there who can help me or knows why i dont get a notification icon/unread count that shows up above my messaging app on CM9 when i have an unread text message. Go to settings/system/status bar and at the bottom is a check box for Show Notification Count on CM9.
Does the touchwiz text message app have actionable notifications? Whenever I get a text and expand the notification, there is no option to reply or mark it as read.
Is there another sms app that has actionable notifications?

I have always used third party apps to handle SMS but really like the SMS app built in enough to stick with it.
It is annoying though when I can definitely read the msg in notification but have no way of dismissing it and marking read unless I open the msg and back out.

You may want to try out Textra in the play store. When you receive a text, you can click it in the notification panel and a pop up appears, you can respond or, click "done" and it will be mark as read.
If you have ever run bitesms on a jailbroken iphone, the same devs make Textra.
Is there a way to get the stock messaging so I can mark messages as read from the notification panel. I miss the old option from AOKP to be able to delete, reply or mark as read.
I know that there are apps that allow you to mark as read through the popup but I haven't found one that works through the notification panel.
It looks like Android 4.3 will greatly help apps to build this function into them.

It's not stock, but Sliding Messaging lets you use any combination of reply, mark as read, call, and delete on its notifications.

I hate that every notification except email has the same sound. How can I change so that text messages have their own notification? Right now text messages and all other random notifications share the same ringtone so I never know if I got a text message or something else.

It doesn't work. If you change it, it changes it for all notifications. Not just texts.
I just figured it out.

I had been looking for this setting for days now and I just stumbled upon it. When you are editing a contact go to the bottom of the contacts information and hit the "ADD ANOTHER FIELD" button. There you will see the ability to add the "Message Tone" field as well as specify a "Vibration Pattern" if wanted. Not sure why they didn't put the Message Tone option on the contact by default.

Mind blow.
Dude, just set any ringtone for notifications via phone settings - it'l be your sms ringtone AND for any other applications having opportunity to create notifications you should open those applications, go their settings and find there option notifications and change notifications sound directly for that application. Logic!
Binrob, I get what you are after because I did a google search for the very same thing. No one here seems to get it.
What happens is all these other apps utilize the same NOTIFICATION sound as your text messages (like Facebook, or playing back-and-forth board games). Binrob and the rest of us want our TEXT messages TO BE DIFFERENT sounding than all the others. I don't want to look at my phone every time i get a notification, but i do want to look at my phone every time someone texts me. There doesn't seem to be a way to customize SMS/TEXT to its own notification sound. Android needs to fix this.
You've answered everyone's question! This should show up #1 on Google search!

Has there been updates since to change to separate notification for all contacts?
I get this issue and NEED them to fix as well! I don't want fb messenger and text messaging and any other notification to have the same sound. I want to know what app the notification is for WITHOUT unlocking and looking at my phone. Also, on my s5 I was able to change my led color for specific apps. If it blinking red I knew it was a text. Blinking green fb message. Blinking blue fb notification. Etc! Please add those back!
You CAN set the sound for messages, go to settings, notifications, advanced ......... choose messages, more settings (at the bottom of the screen), and the next screen is where you change the sound that is made. Not exactly user friendly though!
I think the answer is as simple.as: go to your message app, top right hit: more, Then go to settings and set whatever ringtone you want to have under notifications. I guess this should be what you are looking for.
Cheers

notificaton tone in message+
The comment that you can set message tones In contacts is correct except that apps like message+ , at least on the Galaxy , ignore that and use their own tones
I just found it....
open messages on the right top corner click there and pick customize ando under tones and there u can pick whatever ringtone for only SMS....
FOR SAMSUNG S9/S9+. To have a specific sound for you messages, go to messaging app/setting/notifications/general notications must be off/emergency alerts must be off. Go to new messages and choose your preferred sounds.
