So I have read various threads, and none give a good indication.
So I guess Sony installs some anti shatter screen or something like that. Will this also indirectly protect from a possible scratch?
Or do we need a screen protector over it? If we do, do we need it and not the sony installed one? Or do we install our own over it?

I've actually never used a screen protector even for phones that go in my pocket with my keys, saw-sharpening tungsten files and raw uncut diamonds. Ha ha. Anyway, I'd say it's overkill unless you're REALLY hard on your electronics. However, as the unfortunate person above me proves, scratching the screen is not impossible.

I got rid of the Sony one! It was hard to get it off but in fact it's not a big deal.
After that I cleaned the display and put a new one on pure glass surface.
(Supremery antiglare...)
Its a difference like night and day!!!
Much less fingertips less reflective... colours look more clean now.
If I got rid now of a special screen protection that should come with the Sony one,
well I can live with that case. The usability is improved!!!

The truth is that you never ever need a screen protector for anything. If you do want to protect your device from scratches, then yes. Sony's anti-shatter film is just that - an anti-shatter film, intended to prevent the screen from cracking in a hazardous fashion.
It is unfortunately not a scratch resistant film from the looks of things. Someone said a Sony representative claimed it was worth a lot of money though.
I myself use a half-matte film atop the anti-shatter film, but you can remove it and use the screen without it if you prefer.
I have put a screen protector over the device without removing the Sony one. I don't perceive any difference and always have the chance to replace it cheaply in case anything happens. I've done the same with my latest phones (S and Z). That way the screen remains in perfect condition for my own use and also when the time comes to sell the device.

Technically it (and screen protectors in general) do this.
However...
They do not do this by being harder to scratch than the screen. I mean.. on one side you have a flexible plastic sheet. On the other a solid piece of glass. Which do you think is harder to damage?
Essentially, all screen protectors do is to be a layer between the screen and anything which could damage it. The protector is easier to damage than the screen it protects, but i.e. a sand grain would still have to grind through it before it has a chance to damage the screen below. And if the screen protector gets (too) scratched it is easy to replace.
(This also means if it *never* gets scratched you wouldn't have needed it in the first place. Anything which couldn't damage the protector wouldn't have been able to damage the screen.)
In the case of the anti shatter film we have practically the worst of both worlds. We have a layer on the screen which is easier to damage than it, but it isn't easy to remove. It is likely that in technolust109's case only the anti-shatter layer is scratched, not the actual screen. But that will be only visible if the anti-shatter layer is removed, which as said isn't easy and I am not sure if the Warranty is still valid if you do this.
My Tablet Z "screen" (meaning actual screen + anti-shatter layer, so likely only the anti shatter layer) has a scratch too. Only a vary fine one, though. You only see it under the right light conditions and the right viewing angle and it is only feel-able if you using a fingernail instead fingertip and know where it is.
My Nexus S, which is now over 2 years old and which has never seen a case or screen protector still has not a single scratch on its screen, btw.

I've just bought a used (UK) S2 on eBay, and am wondering whether I should bother with a screen protector for it. From other posts it seems that there are mixed opinions on the effectiveness of Gorilla glass for preventing scratches (particularly from sand), so I wondered how many people bother with a screen protector?

Always as Gorilla Glass can get scratched and proof is in the scratched protector but not the screen .

Gorilla Glass...has got that real nice feel to it...hence no protectors...after 2 months of usages no scratches...just got a coloured frontal screen protector on today though...solely for the visual aspects...rather than protections but nice never the less.
I use protectors as sand will scratch G glass. I will give G glass credit though... It is a hell of a lot more scratch resistant than standard screen coatings.

a layer of film never hurts. at least something gets in the way before it scratches the actual glass screen.

Lots of people have complained that after using a screen protector the phone is no longer responding to touches very well (this can be fixed with a root app though).
There is no real need at all for the screen to have a protector, it is the toughest glass around and there are plenty of videos on youtube of people taking hunting knifes and other sharp objects to their screen with no visible marks being left. Sure it will shatter if it lands on a sharp point but it is not the sort of glass that scratches easily like other phones, removing the need for a screen protector.
Plus the glass is fairly smudge resistant and very smooth to touch.
I fail to see a need.

I had a Nexus One with no case for 17 months, which I predominantly kept in my trouser pocket. Not one single scratch on the glass but had various nicks and dents in the metal frame. Have had my gs2 for about 3 months and already have four big scratches on the screen. So my advice, but a protector.

2 months here, zero scratches.
Start using it without any protector. Trust and experience the good feel of the Gorilla Glass. And by any chance if you see any slightest roughness (rare though) appearing... apply a protector.

I have the SGP Glas just for those crazy moments when something goes wrong. Already busted a Ultra Crystal screen protector with a bad scratch.
Always use protection. Even if it turns out to be a waste, it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

I use a screen protector and my screen is responsive and have no probs at all. good idea to use i think
I like the gorilla glass but it does seem to be a fingerprint magnet... At least with a screen protector it doesn't pick up those damn fingerprints...
My opinion is that anything that can put a scratch on gorilla glass will have no trouble cutting through a VERY thin layer of film you have applied on top of the gorilla glass making it's 'protection' void.
However, I'm still too paranoid not to use a protector.... :S
I suggest to use one.. I have no problem with touch sensitivity problem.. Better safe than sorry..

I am not happy with my new Xperia S or Sony's attitude. I only had the phone a week and the screen has many fine scratches. I am extremely careful with my phones - my original Desire's screen is unmatied. With the Sony statement forth Xperia being scratch resistant I felt I was on safe ground - after all I'd come back to Sony to rediscover the quality I yearned and always had on previous Sony phones since my Z1 back in '96.
I've treated my Xperia the same as those before it - the most extreme condition being loose in my inner suit pocket with my work BlackBerry. And this is exactly what has covered it in scratches - the pitch of the scratches matching that of the cheap plastic keys on the BlackBerry.
And to insult me properly I get the below response from Sony, as if they are sniggering from around the corner.
"Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.
We can confirm the handset is scratch resistant, however not scratch proof, it is still possible to scratch the screen of the handset, we apologize for any confusion caused by this."
I though this was Sony trying to get back on a level with the top guys... With gorilla glass everywhere else many (me included) assumed Sony's claim of scratch resistant meant some proprietary equivalent.

You aren't aware that your Xperia S came screen protector preinstalled? Glass underneath is scratch proof mineral glass.
Mate i believe you scratched the protective screen protector, as it is really easy to get scratched, even with a fingernail you will be able to scratch the screen protector ( minimal scratch ofc )

The preinstalled plastic is not a screen protector, but for keeping the glass together if the screen cracks so the glass is not going everywhere in the air.
I would say as the ppl above, this is scratched, not the screen

Try a brando ultra clear or martin fields screenprotector. Both are high quality and much better scratch resistant. Both brands have protectors for the xps that can be ordered online.

If you dont want to see any scratch in your screen, I'd recommend you to search for a 'Matte' screen protector, which I've chosen to be from Steinheil for my past phones: They -are- the best ones offered. A bit expensive though...
They seem a bit blurrier than the crystal clear ones, but I guarantee the 'soft touch feeling', no more oily screens and no scratches makes up to that.
Specially because we have a bright screen with sharp colours so there'll be no problem I guess.

Even gorilla glass can be scratched with keys or against another hard object like another phone, every phone to date is susceptible even your Desire which doesn't come any protection against ware and tare.
It's toughened glass not steel, Sony is exactly right with the screen being scratch resistant, not scratch proof just like any other mobile maker will tell you and just like all other mobiles/tablets currently in circulation.
Seriously don't put your brand new mobile in with your keys, coins, junk etc, wait a few months at least like I do lol.
Completely agree with ErichSan, I hate the oily/smudgey feeling screen protectors also.

He's peeling of the plastic that is there to keep the glass together if it breaks. The preinstalled plastic filter does NOT protect against scratches (it may work a little bit against scratches). If u really want one who protects, the phone came with a screen protector in the box.

I was pretty sure I saw some Sony video where they specifically mention the screen is hardened glass just for that reason, so you could use a regular pen or pencil if you wanted too. It was designed for such writing...

Sure, glass is glass, but plastic (which the protector is made of) is platic, and it will scratch.
I second what everybody else said, as I scratched the protector I put on and I had to change it.
A pen is actually less likely to scratch the plastic as the pencil can be roughly sharpened, while a pen or something in aluminium with a rounded tip is perfect.
Anyway, I have a matte screen protector on and it definitely seems less likely to get scratched...

Remember that most of Sony's smartphones now have an Anti Shatter Sheet applied to the scratch resistant glass. This sheet is plastic and scratches so very easily. A lot of us have to put a screen protector on top of this sheet so as not to scratch it. Of course you can easily remove this sheet but doing so also removes the Sony logo on the front of the phone as well as voiding your warranty.

That is good info. But Since the phone is designed to be used with a pen or pencil as a stylus I would imagine its still plenty hard enough?
And consumers would have that assumption given that Sony's ads show people using a metal tip pen and a pencil to write on the device. But as many users here can attest, that is all marketing bull****. I am even doubting their glass screen to be nothing special (not dragon trail or gorilla glass) - my guess it is just ordinary glass that breaks easily hence them placing an Anti Shatter Sheet.

you are not missing anything, please sir, continue to use pencils and pens on your xperia z ultra naked. Use them hard and press them with your might, as it might make you realise some day that there is a factory anti-shatter screen protector on top of the hardened glass. But until then, please puncture the screen with all your might

dragon tail and gorilla glass will shatter upon impact, even diamond will shatter if you hit it with another rock
Has anyone else found that when using pencils and pens on the screen that they scratch the hell out of their screens. And it is now pssing me off knowing i have really scratched it beauces of doing something they said you can do. Especially since the screen is meant to be scratch resistant.
Yea it's actually an anti shatter film. not so much a scratch resistant layer. I just put a screen protector on top of mine before I started testing out the handwriting thing. once it scratches I just replace it. gotta do some research before doing some of the sketchy stuff. for example, I have yet to try out the phones water proofing. I know it can be done but should I do it as a test? ehh ill probably just take their word for it. lol

Well yeah this is Sony main weaknesses.. but one of their main strength too.. Saw that Xperia Z1 drop test? not a crack on the screen (compared to the S4 for example). Why? well the shatter proof does its job.. but unfortunately, the scratch resistant nature is only embedded on the screen below it.. so like any other phone, please buy yourself a new screen protector. even my previous Gorilla Glass RAZR MAXX is scratched after 8 months of use.. Better protected than never..

I put a gearmaxxx ultra clear screen protector on D1, scratched on day 3 I think, trying to write on the device with a pencil.
Then I got an anti glare no brand screen protector, really good, scratched 5 days ago trying if pencils or metal objects could write under water, as several sites report that as working. Of course it didn't work, but then I obviously scratched the screen protector again.
By then the Chinese glas.t knock off had arrived, so I put that on. Some days later I impressed my dad and my daughter with a pen on it, and she began drawing with the Sketch app.
Wanna know how it ended?
Even the tempered glass got scratched.
Bottom line is, everything get scratched sooner or later.
If you can live with few scratches on your screen and change screen protector every now and then, do as you please, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm not writing on the screen with anything besides my fingers anymore, I'm sick of changing screen protectors, and the original anti shatter film on the device is a pain in the arse to remove if you scratch that.
And if you manage to remove that too, you'll most definitely lose your warranty (other than the Sony logo).

Well you could try to find a softer stylus like one on the note 3 though.. or maybe that cp12 embedded stylus could be the perfect solution.. Or like how the zu was advertised, write on the paper on top of the z ultra.. It is meant for carbon copy device..

I am almost certain that the shatterproof protector they put on their phones only keeps the shards of the broken glass in, so you don't cut yourself or anything. Shatterproof protectors don't actually stop the phone from breaking, whatever glass Sony is using just must be really tough.

With some plastic on top I'm sure there is some resistance to shatter because it absorbs some of the shock rather than directly to the glass itself..

Possibly yes but a shatterproof sheet itself does not stop the glass to break, despite the misleading name. It merely keeps the shards in when it does break. I'm sure the Z1's sturdiness is more from Sony's strong glass and frame of the phone than the sheet on they put on the screen

Aww that sucks. I don't want to buy another product just for plastic LOL. i don't want to remove the film either.
How do you find the front ASF on z Ultra? How does it handle fingerprints? In summer my hands are really sweaty.

The asf scratch easily, the oliofobic wore off in like three months and at about 2/3 down the screen there was a horizontal dull and almost har d to see through line where my fingers had been swiping in many apps. So I took it off about a year ago.
Without its a nightmare. Its completely dull. There is no finish to the glass due to that the asf needed the rough surface to bond to. I have been using Gtechnic kit and it does very well. Its a product most used in sports cars and airplanes but it can be used to anything you like as long as it sticks to the surface.
..But not enough. Probably the best solution would be to have proper buffing equipment and buff the surface until its smooth as crystal glass.
Anyhow I tried a set off those hardened glass protector and thats what im using at the moment. The phone is now two years old so I dont really care much about it. If it dents it dents, if the glass cracks it cracks. Im not spending money on it any longer.

Edit: Oh yeah I forgot to mention the mocolo glass panels also add a bit of ...or very much to make the phone much more rigid! The z ultra is very easy to bend in half but with them mounted its much much more rigid and harder to bend. It feels more like a premium device.

Can i apply the glass screen protector on top of asf? And if the oleophobic coating of the screen protector fades in a few months apply rainx?

its a common question. As I understand the touch sensitivity is not an issue when applying screen protector onto the asf. So you should be fine.
And Yes typicly rainx should work. But the oleophobic wont wear of the glass screen protector.. not what I have noticed at least.
