I can leave my phone plugged in and charging and quickly check a text message and reply, and my phone will be fine. But if I try to use my phone any more than that, the display gets strange artifacts (it's different every time, ranging from a dark grid overlayed on top of the image to the screen filled with different colors on each pixel) and sometimes the speaker emits a constant loud high pitched noise, even if it's on silent. I noticed one of the times that the sleep button worked, but using the touch screen and the capacitive buttons is impossible and I have to yank out the battery every time it happens. I'm running a recent CM10.1 nightly and default kernel, and I've experienced this problem independent of which nightly or kernel I'm using for the past few weeks (I have had no problems in the recovery menu). It even crashed one time upon boot up when I tried to unlock the phone immediately. Another minor problem is that my home screens got screwed up one of the times it crashed. It seems like a hardware failure to me. I'm wondering if anyone has seen this problem or has any ideas that might help. Thanks.
It certainly sounds like a hardware issue to me. I have not seen anything similar reported on these forums. Is the phone currently stock, or custom firmware? The best test to see if the problem is firmware or hardware related is to flash a fresh stock firmware using Odin3. If the problem goes away, then it is obviously a firmware issue.
If it is a hardware problem, you may have trouble flashing a fresh stock firmware, or may not be able to at all. Or if you are able to flash a new stock firmware, but the problem does not go away, then it is probably hardware.

Hy
I have quite a big problem with my TP.
I run NRGZ latest rom with my UC settings and S2U2, and after a week with no problems at all my pone has become self-aware
That means that he, by himself (phone is on desk and no body is touching it) starts to opening camera (and taking pictures) starts to opening comm manager, starts messing with my (his) volume settings (increase, decrease ring volume).
First I thought that maybe some of setting got fuzzy (but for 6 days it worked perfectly fine) so on reflash my TP to stock rom and flash it again with custom rom (|RAPH|ROM|6.5|WWE| ★ EnergyROM 'Warhawk' (SYS 23016) ★ | Built Aug 11 | w Manila 2.1!).
With latest flash I disabled UC and didn’t install any other app but issues are still here: randomly opens comm manager, camera, volume settings.
I have to mention that I really look out on my phone (in my country it costs 1000$ in retail) so it didn’t fell, took a bath or anything like that.
My phone is still in warranty and I will flash to stock rom, radio and SPL but before that I liked to know what the cause is.
I had the same problem. After installing NRG's ROM, my phone began to whack out just like yours after a few days. Ultimately, it started getting really hot, and the battery was no longer able to charge when the phone was on - it would discharge down to zero when plugged in and could only charge with the phone off. Going back to stock didn't solve the problem, and I ended up having to get the phone replaced. I have no idea if it was related to NRG's ROM or just a coincidence as I've used NRG's ROMs with no problem before.
Ghost?
Maybe NRG's ROM is so cool that unseen want to use it too
Seriously, flash an official ROM and then flash back to NRG's ROM. Some unexplained behaviour has been attributed to NAND corruption which the an official ROM flash corrects (by reformatting in the process). I had a different weird issues and were fixed when i installed an official ROM and then NRGs ROM.

already did that and no difference
could it be HW issue???
Me too - flashing to stock made no difference. Some kind of permanent hardware damage was done to it (and not from dropping or from water or anything obvious). Maybe the cooked ROM cooked the processor or something.
Hmm, do you think you could get it replaced by reflashing the stock goodies back to your carrier? Or if you really looking for debugging the issue, try sending a pm to cmonex of hardspl fame..
I'm having the same type of problem with my fuze. The volume just zeroes itself out; you can actually see the slider visually go down the slide scale, past vibrate to silence. If you adjust the volume up using the side volume up button, but the slider will just go right back down. It doesn't seem to matter what ROM I use. This is the only problem with the phone. But when it starts this volume adjusting, no other programs can run as the phone stays in the volume adjust screen. Sometimes it works for days without problem and then the problem will not go away, even after a hard reset. Any help??? I'm just a noob that knows very little programming; just enough to get in trouble.

did you (or anybody affected with this or similar issue) find out how to reproduce this "bug" because with my luck when i go to repair center everything will work just fine
Mine seems to act up worse as the battery starts to get just a bit low on juice. The phone is the most stable when I leave it plugged into my computer using the USB cable.
My phone would only charge with the phone off. So I recharged then followed the directions on www.blownfuze.com (or maybe .org - can't remember) to get everything back into shape for a warranty return. I actually took it into the warranty center in person and they tested it while I waited. Obviously it was all fine because they handed me a brand new phone.
My Vibrant is currently running stock KB5.
About every two days or so, I will be using the phone, and the colors on the screen will suddenly wash out, screen goes to max brightness, whatever is on the screen at the time stays up, and there will be two or three horizontal thin lines on the screen. The Menu, Home, Back, and Search keys all light up. The touchscreen and all buttons, including the power button, become unresponsive. Screen will not timeout. Only way to get out of it is to remove the battery and reinsert. If I am in the middle of a phone call, I am still able to continue speaking on the phone.....but can't hang up, adjust volume, etc.
I haven't tried any other ROMs since KB5 was released, so hard to say if another ROM would solve the issue. Don't flame me for sticking with KB5. I don't need my phone to do a lot....really just use it for calls, music player, Sirius, Google Maps/GPS, light web browsing. I'm not really opposed to running another ROM, I just found it to be a pain in the butt to be constantly switching ROMs as they are updated.
Anyone else experience this problem? Hardware or driver problem? If anyone else did have this problem, did switching to another ROM solve it for you?

No mods whatsoever. Completely stock, not rooted.
My vibrant is in a bit of an issue. The screen is black and not responding but the 4 buttons are lit up.
The phone boots normal with its standard boot animation and load screen but as soon as the phone gets to the actual UI it blacks out and becomes unusable.
I can get into both recovery and download mode, and i have already flashed 2 different ROMS through ODIN in hopes that it would fix the issue, but no dice. one ROM alleviated the issue for about a day then it came back. the other ROM I flashed was no use.
I want to ask what else could i try ... or what could be causing the issue with the phone.
My thoughts is that theres is a I/O issue within the phone that is blacking the screen out when it gets to the GUI, other then that im at a loss for options.
I was having exactly the same issue with my wife's phone. When it booted up it seemed to try to turn on some of the various antennas (3G, Bluetooth), sometimes it ran the media scanning step, and then it black screened and started over. I cleared the internal SD memory and cache from recovery mode and that _seems_ to have fixed things for the moment.

What were you trying to do when the screen went black? load a gb bootloader or anything?
Hello.
When I leave my phone in sleep mode (screen locked and light off) and try to wake with On/Off button, sometimes I get a black screen with a faintly image. The touchscreen works and all the buttons, and if you click 2 times On/Off button - the image appears all ok. I tried to flash another stock ROM - all the same. Then I`ve unlocked the bootloader, rooted the phone and even did the S-off with wire trick (1.53 Hboot). Then I`ve tried 3-4 custom ROMs with 6-7 different kernels, from stock to custom, but all the same. Yes, I`ve updated the firmware file, also, but with no difference.
Well, I see that this problem is not so usual, but I couldn`t find any real solution. Did anyone have this kind of problem and solved it? Since I got this phone from another country - official warranty is out of the question, I need a DIY solution.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
THX in advance!!!
I would have to say it looks like the light for your screen is dying, I had my screen replaced once, my screen would flicker from very dark to very bright

hmmmm, but when I get the OK image - it doesn`t flicker or go from dark to bright, it only has trouble to "wake up from sleep mode". even when i relock the screen quickly and don`t leave it unused for 2-3 minutes, the screen works OK every time....it looks like a software problem, but still I didn`t manage to fix it with all the ROMs/kernels/firmwares I`ve flashed....

Thinking about how to troubleshoot if hardware or software. When in sleep mode, instead of using the power button, I would have the phone plugged into a computer and use the " adb reboot " command to reboot the phone without touching the phone a few times and see if it lights up correctly. The first thing you should see is the boot screen, and if it works every time, then you do have an issue with your firmware. If you don't see that boot screen first every time, then as much as it sucks, I would guess there is a hardware issue.
Good luck, but this is the easiest way I know of to help determine what the issue likely is.
Minor update here, the first thing (at least on mine) that I see is the lock screen for just a quick second or two, then it quickly goes into the boot sequence. This is important as in "sleep" the ROM is running, so if the first thing you see is the boot sequence every time, and not the lock screen, then it points more to a software problem than a hardware issue. CM9 had an issue for the epic4g where you had to turn it off and on sometimes to get the keyboard to light. They found the issue in the firmware causing it.
Just wanted to make this as accurate as possible.
Wow so I am not the only person with this problem. The EVO 3D that I have was replacement phone that was given to me from Sprint from the first EVO 3D that I had which had issues with the digitizer. I received the replacement phone this past Tuesday and it worked fine for two days. It was not rooted and I did install the ICS update. On Friday morning I took it off the charger and went to work, while in the break room the screen suddenly went black and I could not get the phone to display anything after that. The Android function buttons at the bottom will light up but the screen wont, the phone also gets hot even with it powered off.
Long story short, I took it back to the Sprint store where they ordered me yet another replacement EVO 3D. Has anyone had to go through 3 EVO 3Ds or more?

Excellent thinking, I didn't think in that direction. I'll try this tomorow, since I'm not at home. My personal oppinion that it's a software problem but if I did all the above - what did I miss? If I flashed the firmware, ROM and kernel, what else is left untouched that could affect the LCD? Could anyone suggest a good kernel? Or can I downgrade the firmware, since no one had such a problem with GB?
just to inform all - I tried all soft solutions, but all the samo. finaly - I replaced the LCD and everything is OK.
THX all for help
Seems that a lot of people complain about this bug/glitch. It mostly happens with this device, specific to some carrier like s5 t mobile etc. Mostly what people face is flickering with a green/yellow nuance that covers at least half of the screen, and that happens when you set screen brightness on minimum. Some other ( like me ) also get the flickering while turning the screen on or off. So I started doing some searches over the web, and tried all the 'fixes' possible. Sadly to me nothing worked. Some of these 'fixes' are :
Turning off auto brightness.
Turning off adaptive display.
Turning off screen overlay ( found on developer settings )
Also other strange ones like removing your sd card etc. Few people say that these worked for them, but for me it didn't.
I tried booting on safe mode, and the problem was still there. I also flashed official 5.0 and the same. So the only thing left was to blame the hardware. But I was sceptical about this since the problem is not persistive, sometimes it happens, sometimes not. Sometimes it happens on small scale, sometimes it is worse. Also a lot of people say that their devices were working fine and the problem started after marshmallow update. A certain person on an online forum claims that he/ she spoke with samsung officials and they are aware about this problem and working on an update to fix this. Does this mean it is not physical problem but just a software glitch ? Hard to say, I sent my phone to different local repair shop and they say it is screen physical problem. But maybe they just want to scam me and take money ( new screen costs too much )
After going through all these, I just got the idea to try and flash an older firmware, like kitkat. And to my surprise, on official kitkat rom it still does the problem, but FAR less.
So TLDR if you have this glitch and gave up on all the 'fixes' you found online, try flashing kitkat, it might work for you even if it's not a permanent fix.
I'm sorry to bump this topic being that it seems dead. However after my own research and now my second S5 from T-Mobile. I'm at the same point as you. My research states that it's more of an AMOLED screen issue, which after a factory reset and flash of older ROM and such does make sense. However, at the same time it could be an actual issue with the screen.
It's definitely a hardware issue in my case-cold temperatures exacerbate it ie-I have no flicker issues in the summer, but get flicker issues in the winter if my phone cool's down to the 60s. The flicker goes away if I heat the screen.
It seems the lower the temp, the more wattage (brightness) is required for the display matrix to function; insufficient wattage/heat when the screen is activated, and the matrix collapses. This is why it autobrightness tends causes issues when it provides power below threshold for matrix stability.
Easiest legitimate econimical fix is ordering a replacement screen, if you have reaervations about yiur shop doing it, it's a very easy/cheap/simple process to do yourself and plenty of how to YouTube videos.
okay, I will solve this issue for yall. I have an s5 g900t that had the screen flicker issue and also when temps are cold, the screen would blank out till I warmed the screen. I fixed this issue after a year of having the issue. a temp fix which can damage the device was found by accident when I went to change out a broken rear cam. heating the screen with a heat gun during surgery fixed the issue for a while then the symptoms came back. after much much research and testing, I found the amoled screen was the culprit. I ordered a new screen and replaced it. no more issues. I took the old screen and replaced it to my other s5 which is for testing only and the screen flickered under low light and would not come on when cold. so, if you have a screen that is flickering in low light and/or wont come on during cold, its your screen. replace it and fixed. how long the new screen will last? well 2 years later no problems, yet.
FYI, AMOLED screens are notorious for this issue and the manufacture is well aware.
