Battery Life < 4 Hours! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So as of recently my battery life seems to be just terrible. I haven't done anything weird or started using any apps that are doing things in the background to drain my battery. I've been using the Devil kernel on and off (i thought it was having a negative effect on my battery life, but even a stock CM doesn't last long.
I should also not that when my battery does get to about 2-3% or less when im using the phone the screen brightness will start to flicker, and that if i turn my phone on after the battery having died in most cases if it tries to boot it results in a bootloop which is only fixed after i have wipe my data partitions.
Here are some screenshots of my battery stats from my usage this morning (and a few others ive taken):

I haven't even had the phone a year is something wrong with the battery or phone maybe? Im tempted to see if i can get it fixed under warranty...
Not really relevant but it also has a shattered screen

Something could be off with the media process. Try without an sd card. Some people (myself included) have had problems with the sd card being unmounted and mounted again, causing the media process to rescan the whole sd, huge battery hogger.
Edit: also try using better battery stats (free on the xda android apps section) to see if you can identify the problem.

at the moment i don't have an sd card installed, i did have one but took it out to use it for other stuff. Will try better battery stats and see if that gives me any more info as to where all my battery is going.

The Android OS stat being so high compared to Screen (normally the largest consumer) suggests you have something running. If you tap the Android OS line it will open and show you what is running. That gives you a start on what should or should be on. Haven't used Better Battery Stats but ES File Explorer and ES Task Manager are good tools, and I have Battery Booster which can Optimise the system by killing unneeded apps. Also DL Greenify - if hibernates apps and saves memory and battery without affecting performance noticeably.
note: I like ES Task Manager because you can kill apps then hit refresh and see which ones restart - lets you have a good idea what is needed versus what hasn't been closed after use.

So i ran my phone from 100-5 and had better battery stats measure things, i took some screenshots can anyone see anything unusual?

use an app like GREENIFY to hibernate the apps when not in use. if that doesn't help, change the kernel to like siyah and check the battery performance. if this is common on any custom rom and custom kernel, flash a stock ones and return to warranty and handle the phone to service center. :good:

well, the most wakelocks are caused by Maps, but your CPU governor is messed up - your CPU is at the max power almost always. What kernle are you using and are you using any CPU tweaking apps?

Maps seems like the cause:
Your stats show 4 hrs in deep sleep and about 3 hrs awake, but only 22 minutes of screen time.
And amongst the wake locks (stuff keeping your phone awake) maps seems like the winner, with skype following close by.
You need root, the following things should help:
Try converting maps to user app (not installed to system) and try the app greenify to suspend it while not being used. Or freeze it directly with titanium backup and unfreeze only when needed.
Try turning off wifi and gps location off unless you need some app to know your location (in adjustments).
Also use some cpu speed control app. You can limit your max cpu speed to 1ghz or lower without loosing performance (unless playing heavy games). Also you can create a cpu profile with about 300mhz when screen is turned off, which is enough for music playing.

Strange seems like my cpu doesn't want to scale down from 1400mhz, its just sitting there constantly :| back on the stock kernel now btw

[Q] Deep Sleep vs 200mhz and the epic battle for battery life...

I just checked with CPU Spy and found that my phone is sitting at min processor speed 58% of the time. Deep sleep is under 18%. Could this be the reason my battery life is so terrible?
Little background, I ran stock for 15 minutes (literally, in the AT&T store and in the car on the way to office). I followed this tutorial to get stock + root and made a glorious nAndroid backup.
That worked, but of course now I have the Yellow triangle on boot. Should have followed creepyncrawly's Guide How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter (but of course hind sight is 20/20). JIG has been ordered, on its merry way.
Next step was to follow Atinm's instructions for installing CM7 nightly which includes instructions to flash a different version of CWM 5.0.2.3 found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18052303
Ok... still with me? Simple enough. Ran CM7.1 for a week (it's great btw). Then I flashed another CWM from ROM Manager so I could easily run with the nightlies. But kept reading about UnNamed ROM, so let's try that out. Now I'm on 1.2 with Entropy's Daily Driver 11/03. But my battery drains pretty quick and I noticed my system isn't really going into Deep Sleep as it should.
I take it after all that, it is because I have facebook set to sync every 30 seconds? j/k Seriously though, here is my decidedly long apps list of Market apps. Anything troublesome in there? I turn off all automatic sync / notification features of Twitter, FB, Words with Friends. But I do use push email for Exchange and Gmail.
Here is the troublesome screengrab from CPU Spy that started my downward spiral.

So did I screw something up along the way? Should I just be happy I bought a second battery with charging dock?
same boat here....
This would drain your battery life when your screen is off, not on. I am still in the process of figuring out my wakelocks. Strangely it would appear my JuiceDefender is unlocking my phone. Maybe that's normal when it is turning my wifi/data off.
I check everything manually, so typically I just turn off wifi/data in the UnNamed notification bar. Same with bluetooth/gps.
Note that deep sleep percentages are invalid if any of that time was on-charger time.
It's gotta be an app using a wake lock that is screwin me over. Some light reading:
[REF] Known identified battery drainers
...and here I thought I had searched the forum!
To be fair, I thought maybe I screwed up the radio or kernel by following the ODIN instructions for gaining root and flashing CWM, but looks like that is just paranoia. More than likely one of the many MANY market apps.
GOing to use Titanium and freeze the apps in Entropy's thread, including Facebook. I like the desktop web view better anyway. And no, I don't need Notified every time someones cat is super cute. That is what MMS is for
Installing Better Battery Stats from XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Will see what I can do
Deep sleep seems to sip about 1/5 to 1/8 as much power when idle, so it's very important. Some voltage control apps break deep sleep mode. And like they said, better battery stats is the way to find wakelocking apps. My phone is pretty always in deep sleep when I'm not using it.
Exchange email sync wake lock was the culprit. Specifically, for some reason it was hung synching my corporate calendar and draining about 15% per hour.
Going to remove sync account and wipe app cache, re setup and cross fingers.
::edit:: actually looks like Google Music was syncing constantly also...

battery drain issue

Sometimes, in idle mode mode, my phone drained battery very quickly (see picture). The best way to meet this case is restart phone, everything is back to normal. And battery life very good on idle mode, about 3-4 hours for 1%
I have tried many ways but can not find the cause. Please help me.
I use stock room .62

I'm not sure you're interpreting the graph correctly. The drop from 70% - 50% seems to happen much faster than the area you have circled in the screenshot.
I use the "stock room" and remove bloatware. Root by "root xperia", unlockbootloader.
battery 70% - 50% drop faster because i use wifi for web browser.
list bloatware.

I see. Have you tried Juice Defender? The paid version is excellent!
You may therefore have a crappy app running after browsing... which I haven't as you can see from my curve. What app are you using for browsing?
Avoid "fix-it" widgets like you have and any task killers.... let Android do its thing. It works.
I use default web browser.
Hmmm... so do I. I've just run the browser for a few minutes and closed it. I will check the battery status shortly and report.
How did you update to .62? I did it like this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20842024&postcount=45
... to avoid "issues" due to flashing over previous builds.
No problem several hours after using Browser...
Also check that the phone is deep sleeping.... other image attached
I have this problem from fw .283, .42 and now .62. I have tried "Force Stop" a few applications running, but have not found cause.
And I will try by installing the new fw .62 and do not delete anything including bloatware.
I have the same problem for fw 0.42.
I had problem with 0battery lvl so I follwed this tut to alteast get the phone working:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332399
Now I can use the phone without the charger but after 2-3hours the phones dies and needs recharging. Can't find the problem. :/
Today, I switch from "2G" to "3G" to browse the web. And after return to idle mode, battery drained very fast.
When switch to flight mode, all back to normal (2mA on idle mode).
I think a problem in 3g/2g modes.
Story continues....62 stock (rooted)
Linear discharge
PS: Just noticed that you have a history of "Battery Drain" going back to October... with all sorts of weird builds. Perhaps you should avoid installing loads of half-baked apps and widgets. And builds.

[Q] Mediaserver drain - normal or not?

Hey guys, I've flashed Res. Remix 2.5.3 a few days ago, with default fluxi kernel, and everything is working pretty darn nice.
However, the other night a watched a 2.5 hours long concert on the youtube app (wifi of course), and I can see that in my battery stats the process Mediaserver has drained a lot of battery. See the pics below:

The sudden drop of battery level at about 3 hours in doesn't matter (I was playing Temple Run and the phone froze and had to pull the battery out). The relevant point is the Mediaserver drain compared to the Screen drain. Is this normal? (note that the Mediaserver drained the battery only when I had the screen on; it's not a wakelock that prevents the phone from deep idle)
Once I had similar problem, there was somethnig that drains my juice. Its my habit to put my earbud before I sleep and usually the power is around 50%+ and to my surprise when I woke up my phone was dead. So I checked my status and my phone was awake the whole night. Even that my Media Player is already off when one album is finished playing.
To cut the story short, I uninstalled the apps especially those requires internet connection and sync. Then try to observe your phone if it will continue to drain.
Media server keeps your phone awake while playing media files.
Perfectly normal. It's classed as any audio, such as music, YouTube, etc.

I just registered to XDA trying to find a solution to this problem. Currently on Paranoid Android ROM 1.6a. I agree that the way the media server works is normal. but there is an obvious bug where it keeps re-scanning or mis-handling some specific file which causes it to skyrocket on the battery use. I have been using the PA ROM with great battery until suddenly the media server started eating away my battery. From what I have read so far, this seems to be a bug that's been around for quite a while. Since I have not updated my music collection on my SD card for a while, the only other culprits are either some of the new apps I installed included some media file that is causing the weird behaviour from the media server or some photo or current music file that suddenly went corrupt or similar scenario. The 'fix' is supposed to be removing all your media and go one by one until you see the spike, or even just do a full wipe and re-install and keep a watch on what you install to see if you find the app that caused the spike. Another option is to add .nomedia to almost all directories except photos, videos and music and it also should improve the issue. I personally won't go over 4000 songs and 1000 photos just to fix the battery drain. I am following quite a few forums in hope that someone will find a proper fix.

Excesive battery drain on Existenz 3.5 due to... whatsapp?

My Z2's battery is draining really, REALLY fast. In a normal day I only use it to check whatsapp sometimes and mostly to hear some music.
I have Existenz 3.5 installed on my phone and I thought it might be rom related issue so I clean install a couple of times and nothing happened. Then, I checked on the battery stats and saw that the Whatsapp was the app that was consuming the most amount of battery (30%) then the Google Play Music (around 9%) and so on... So I decided to greenify Whatsapp... Still the same thing.
While all this happened I should say that auto sync was disabled, I was using 2G, the minimun brightness and barely turn my screen on.
After all this happened I decided to put the phone into Android's battery saving mode, still nothing happened. I don't now what to do, I also already calibrated my battery.
Is this soft-hard ware related problem? What should I do?
P.S.
I'll post the screen capture as soon as my phone wakes off it's dream.
How old is your phone?
Try to uninstall whatsup (or freeze) for one day and check the results.

Sound like the mobile radio active bug. Go to Settings -> Power Management -> Battery Usage and have a look at whatsapp. Does it look like my image below (note mobile radio active for hours)? If so, it's the mobile radio active bug and it's an android bug. You'll need to kill whatsapp or toggle mobile data on and off.

I bought my phone in February so I guess it's not that old. I already froze WhatsApp on Greenify.
Yes, the bat stats look like that, radio usage is waaaaaay big. But that workaround haven't helped me since I've been toggling it a couple of times per day (I go to college then to my home)
Something weird is that yesterday when I was at work sometimes I started to feel the heat on my leg and then I take out my phone and put it on my face, so I can now the temp better, and it was hot. I don't like that because I'm only listening music, c'mon
Thanks for the help.
P.S.
If there's a bad batch of Z2s, could you tell me the name so I can compare it to mine?

There's a Xposed module that may fix the problem for some people, you could try that.
Or turn mobile data off when you're not using it. And greenify doesn't kill an app or helping this issue at all it needs to be forced stopped.
Finally the heat could be related to this issue. The problem is that the phone keeps powering the antenna when it shouldn't be.

If you observed in first start in Lollipop rom strongly heated and first run it takes a lot of time but in kit kat based rom phone isn't heated stronly and first run loading very fast. From this we can see lollipop battery drain

This looks low to me or maybe I can't read graphs
Either Instagram or messenger seem to block your phone from going into sleep.
Do you close these two in recent apps menu? If not you could try that...
I'm not using both of these apps so I can't test.

I use AccuBattery and routinely get ~8%/hr screen on rate and 0.8%/hr screen off rate. It looks like something is running in the background (as einfachgaer guesses with Instagram and Messenger). If doing as he suggests doesn't seem to help, you might want to consider going into app info and modifying the data and battery settings for each app. To do that, press and hold on the icons until the menu pops up, then select App Info. From there, you should see Data Settings and Battery Settings; open Data Settings and select the option to prevent it from using background data, then open Battery Settings and select Restricted. Finally, select the Force Stop button for both.
Hopefully it gets resolved soon!

I had a call in messenger using the camera so the battery drain is probably from that, also Instagram I've been using it a lot with watching reels. I restricted both apps and further dialed the clocks

For some reason Accu battery couldn't measure my health after 5 charges in fact I after 10-12 of charging it from 5-10% to 90 it couldn't asses the health it kept saying it didn't detect any charges below the 15% threshold, I've put the clocks even further as I replied to @einfachgaer now my screen on is 13% discharge and 1.20% during screen off. Tomorrow I'll post the results going to use it today see how it fares
Update the is is my current SoT after whole day of heavy use of Instagram scrolling through reels mainly and a video call.
I feel like it could be at least 6 hours due me under clocking the CPU quite a bit and running in durable mode, but with 120hz. Anyone want to share their SoT?
Something's wrong with your setup, my phone is completely stock , and from 80% charge i have it on 30 after 12+ hours of use and 4+ hours of SoT . I will try to get more precise data
Light use with WhatsApp and browser mainly. Wifi (90%), 4G (10%) and brightness to 70-80%
Here's my yesterday stats
I'm on 32.2040.2040.23 with clean slate installed plus dialed down clocks it's feels like I'm having twice as less battery than it should be, screen on drain is 15%
Something is definitely wrong with your device not going into proper deep sleep.
Yesterday I installed Accubattery, so not much data, but it should be enough to show that the battery consumption is very different.

I use Sleep Cycle during my sleep, but I use the phone charger not to lose any battery so this couldn't be the reason, another app is YourHour which tracks my usage, going to remove it and redo the tests, also went to 90hz instead of 120hz. If this continues I will do a clean install on the whole phone. Kind of sad because I love the size of this phone and the feel it had, I am waiting for the gcam update so the photo quality comes even more.
Yeah, I got a good 9hr SOT on a medium use day while bone stock. Something's definitely wrong with your device.
Just took the plunge and bl unlocked so I'll let you know how much the kernels do.
Quick update: I fully cleaned the device and found out that wallpaper engine was running in the background without stopping and not reporting for some reason on the battery stats, also for some reason the wallpaper I was using wasn't running as pre-rendered but high quality preset, maybe something happened when I transferred my data from my Zenfone 6, battery seems to be way better now will post a report probably tomorrow.

Well this are my stats since yesterday I decided to use a lot of Instagram to check how much would it drain, plus having two video call for a total of 40mins. And the second screenshot is from couple of days ago honestly I feel like I should ask for a replacement or my expectations are way higher than they should be
Update on this once again I find it weird that I lose 30% of my battery with screen off, could someone post their display off stats?
This guy on reddit definitely has a different experience than you

im also getting highish usage compared to others, wonder what the cause might be. Were you able to fix it?
