I tried Cyanogenmod after hearing about it over and over.. turned out to be pretty terrible on my Razr Maxx. Constant reboots, CPU getting stuck at full load making my phone get really hot, poor battery life, bluetooth completely going haywire almost daily requiring me to clear dalvik cache to use it.
I am looking at trying a different rom, but from what I have heard, most roms use the kernel used by CM. Now, I don't know if the issues I've had are related to the kernel, or if they're related to the software. Does anyone know anything about that? Has anyone been using a rom that seems to work pretty flawlessly on the device? All I'm looking for is something stable, lightweight, and well maintained. Any recommendations?
I need to get a different rom on there, the stock rom for whatever reason can't connect to bluetooth in my new car.
EDIT: Sorry I meant to post this in General, it wont let me delete my own threads
I have this rom and have no problems with it and I have the normal Razr but they are the same inside. Try wiping every thing and starting over that has helped me a lot

Honestly, a lot of the time the AOSP Roms such as CM just don't work as well on our locked-bootloader devices as they do on others. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that the devs here have given us these great Roms, but they just don't work as well as Stock or Motoblur based Roms do. If you definitely want AOSP, I'd personally recommend CarbonRom. It has always run very well for me on my phone.

Try it with carbon and jbx kernel. Works very well.
Carbon isn't really maintained atm but the latest build is the last version of 4.2.2. Now they are working on a 4.3 version. I will try to port the 4.3 version when it's out but I think there will be no official support anymore.
If you have the xt910 there is only my unofficial build. The xt912 has a official build.

Installed the latest nightly, will give this one a shot. Thank you! I saw it in the list but I wasn't a huge fan of the design in the screenshots, but now that I have it on my phone I like it. Hopefully no bluetooth issues since it seems a lot was carried over from CM.
I had the same Hell with CM10. And DU. And when I asked about these issues the reaction from fanbois here was terrible and hyperbolic, so from then on I just complained about them. (No GPS? No MMS? Low-rez camera? FCs? Really? {der})
So I searched and searched for a good rom when miui stopped supporting the xt910.
+1 for Carbon. It is fantastic. Sometimes you get a black screen on boot so just reboot to BMM and fix permissions. I am so relieved to have a good rom. I now have stock on slot 1, Carbon on slot 2 (daily driver), AOKP on slot 3, and an old MIUI on slot 4. MIUI5 is non-functional as system files are not actually installed.
I have miui5 installed on system 2 with bmm so far it's flawless

Well that's dynamite, marconz. But that's not on 3 or 4, is it. I am not about to replace Carbon with MIUI now.
cm10, carbon, aokp. all of these roms gave me that random NO SOUND issue. ringtone, notification, alarm...completely went silent. even if i go to settings>sounds and try to tap on the sound i want, it does not emit any sounds at all. eclipse is the only one that has not done this so i am sticking with eclipse for now. but i leave Rom Slot 1 open just so i can try CM10 every now and then hoping the sound issue is fixed. trust me, i want CM10 to work but if the sound intermittently doesn't work like that, i can't have that as a daily driver rom.
This thread should be moved to general section, there is no development here

I haven't flashed in well over a year, and I'm still running one of the first stable ICS builds. That has to change.
Can anyone recommend a good JB-based ROM for me? My priorities are stability, battery life and features, in roughly that order.
I'm thinking of trying BeanStalk 4.3.05 or ParanoidKANGDroid 2.3.3, but am definitely open to other suggestions
Thanks!

so many people ask this same question and anyone with real experience here is going to tell you..................
every ROM is going to act differently on every phone. it also depends on what kind of user you are.
common rule here (im not being a jerk, you should know this) is read, read, read.
to show you how often someone asks this very question, go back out one screen and down about 5 threads "looking for an excellent ROM"
I have posted my honest opinions and what you can expect from all available firmwares.
good luck my friend

This is why I am trying to describe what kind of user I am. To reiterate, my priorities are stability, battery life, functionality and speed, roughly in that order.
To elaborate, I want:
Something that will run smoothly
Something who's battery will last for a day if I use it with moderation
Something that, while not necessarily on the bleeding edge of development, has lots of new features
Something with a smooth UI and good, modern capabilities
In terms of specific features that I'd like to try or find necessary, I want a ROM that supports the Jelly Bean panoramic picture mode; one that supports Wifi Hotspots; one with a good toggle menu for preserving battery and turning on / off common features, flash, etc.; and one that has a variety of other useful things to explore / try out. Maybe something with good audio capabilities?

again, if you haven't, read the other post.
from the sounds of it, you may want to go with 4.1.2. it is based off of Touchwiz. SUPER solid and great support from the community. not many updates. it is so solid, it does not need them. but others are still there for support.
personal choice.......PADAWAN........others have had some issues with lag (biggest complaint) and I refer them ( an I have the most thanks on thread) to p.355-378. read through those pages. obviously others have not figured it out cause they don't read. those setting had my phone running better than it ever ran, even out of box.
the only way you will know is to try for yourself. but it is lie Trident gum.............4 out of 5 dentist surveyed.........
as always, good luck in your hunt

I want to make sure that I understand this correctly. The latest update pushed out by SAMSUNG for the i717 was 4.1.2, so therefore the roms built off of 4.1 are using SAMSUNG TouchWiz as a base. The one's built off of 4.2 are using some other base, be it AOKP, CM, etc. Is this correct?
I'm not so certain that I want to go to a 4.1 ROM. Looking over the feature-set of Google's 4.2, I'm seeing quite a bit that I want - for instance, I *really* want Photo Sphere.
I think that if there's a stable version of 4.3 that isn't a battery hog, and that has a decent extended feature-set on-top of it, then that's what I want. That said, if 4.3 is very unstable I'm up for trying 4.2. The only way I'd want 4.1 is if there is no 4.2 or above that is good with battery usage and more-or-less stable.
So, any recommendations with that in mind?

first part..................correct.
that is the good thing about 4.2, highly customizable, but you sacrifice stability. lots of updates, but I am afraid that is because there is mainly one thing that is trying t be fixed, RANDOM REBOOTS. some have success controlling them with an alternate KERNAL which provides the ability to OC/UV, but it can be a constant maintinence on your part. honestly, there is never a good time for a reboot. 4.2 is a much bigger battery hog and a reboot is only going to suck more of it.
second part.................. that's what APK's are for. if it is one simple app ( for whatever personal reason) someone is stuck on, any times you can install it that way. just download it through browser on phone and install with file manager of choice.
third part.................. not that 4.3 is more unstable or battery hog. (I have better battery on 4.3) not necessarily unstable. I just think it is still very early in the game and trying to get some kinks worked out. 4.1.2 was the same way. everybody is impatient, just the nature of the beast. give the amazing and talented developers time. I find 4.3 very smoooooooth, but I have been getting bootloops and I am thinking it is most likely my APP2ZIPP file (which has my apps) I am flashing. so I don't have to keep installing all my same apps one at a time. don't think it is working with 4.3 transition.
the rest is up to you my friend. its all about what YOU want and what you are willing to tolerate as far as constant maintinence.
oh and by the way I am NOT running PADAWAN right now...........its been to solid. I was getting bored. I am addicted to flashing maybe. I ran it for months, flawlessly. since coming off, the longest I have been on any ROM is MAYBE 3 days before changing whether it be the reboots, battery or bootloop issues.
I am not bored though, it definitely give me troubleshooting experience and enables me to help others which I am enjoying

Do all of the 4.2 ROMs suffer random reboots? I see you mention that an alternate kernel may help, but are there any ROMs that have either incorporated in said kernel or that have found another fix of some kind for stability?
Also, with 4.3: are the random reboots an issue there as well? What kinds of kinks are current issues?

On 4.2 they have option to OC/UV with stock kernels. It can just be a constant adjustment in those values to minimalize the reboots. With 4.3 I guess you can say I had reboots, my problem was the reboot would never complete and would just bootloop.
I am just being patient and giving it some time. I know many are working on it cause there is so little action in development thread. Many impatient members have driven developers away by constant pestering. I think many have learned that lesson. That why it is so quiet.
Trust me, it is the calm before the storm

Hmmm... what 4.3 were you using that gave you boot-loops? I'm thinking of trying PAC-Man, and I'm debating between the 4.2.2 and the 4.3 - as it seems that the latter is fairly stable from what I've surmised.

anything 4.3 was doing it. again I am thinking it may have been my APP2ZIPP file.
here is a tip as to what I do when contemplating new ROM...............
obviously I am looking at original OP post for features to what I want. then I go to last page of thread and read backwards. this gives me the most recent problem ROM is having and hint as to whether there is a fix. if it is something I can deal with, then I go for it. if its too much hassle, then I don't.
I thought I was the only one... I I do the exact same thing capt.

Since you, captemo try a lot of ROMs, which 4.2.2 ROM, that you have tried, has lasted the longest without a reboot (how many days)?
Carbon 1.8 was the longest for me thus far, 4 days but after that it went into a reboot frenzy and would reboot 2-3 times a day. Now I'm on CM 10.1 8/23 nightly and it has lasted 2.5 days before reboot. Let's see if it will last longer than that.
Since it's become clear to me that the main issue here is finding something both modern and stable, I've started a different thread that makes that clear in the title. It can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2425090

again, everybody's phone is different. I am not sure why, but my phone cant run CARBON, any version. which kind of bums be out cause of all the options available. many of the 4.2's would do exactly that for me, I get a couple of days out of them, then reboots galore. Carbon, (4.2, 4.3, alternate kernels) is just a no go for me. it's like my phone has an allergy.
it was always suggested to me to try stock KERNEL and let it settle for couple days and hell if I had to flash something, might as well flash a new ROM. then I ran out of ROM's. that's when I started trying KERNELS.
most recently, I have had success with BLOWNFUZE's AOKP and compatible UBER (I think it in OP) and also ROOTBOX w/ UBER. ROOTBOX has some pretty cool features. different sounds and statusbar changing colors in different menus. pretty neat. AOKP, just a bit more stable maybe. I am not sure I had the OC/UV settings dialed in just right though. battery wasn't quite lasting me. want to go back and tweak those some more.
in the meantime, and I don't know why I haven't tried in the past, I have been running SONS of ANDROID. 6 days, stock kernel, NO REBOOTS
in between, I am trying to keep my eyes open for some breakthrough's on 4.3. of course I am also trying work out my options for getting the MEGA 6.3.
again, good luck, read, and remember all phones are just a smidge different. that's smidge can be ALL the difference
Okay, I have been on Jelly Beans ROMs since practically build 1, it seems. I have never tried out another ROM on this device. Something here lately has really gotten my attention though, and that is the "Halo" usage from ParanoidAndroid ROMs. I spent almost an hour last night reading through the bazillion pages on the Original Android Development tab for this ROM (PA). There were so many mixed reviews about what works and what doesn't on the latest release that I am not sure what to think.
My question is, ultimately, is there a build of ParanoidAndroid for VZW Note 2 that is "mostly" bug free (GPS, graphical issues, etc)? I even looked at JellyBam, but there is even less of a clear message with that ROM. I need something for a daily driver and really don't want to have to do work arounds for the things I typically do on my device (Phone Calls to Netflix and all between).
Anyone have any ideas? Like I said, the only build of Paranoid I could find was the newly released one that looks to be built off Android 4.3 (Cyanogenmod, I assume). If that is the case, from what I have read, there are a few things that aren't tied up completely on it. Older build of Paranoid maybe? (Where do I find that?)
Thanks for the help guys.

You can try the 4.2.2 version of paranoid android if you want to be conservative. I think it was 3.68 or something

I'm running build 3.99, have been for a month now. Out of 10 I give it a..... 10. There's really no bugs at all, I hardly get graphical issues but they do exist. I got a GPS lock and you can by getting a lock in a tw ROM in maps, then immediately flashing as you would a normal rom. But honestly this is my favorite ROM I've had on all my android phones so fast and stable and great battery life. Hope this helps.

In regards to gapps, is the general rule of thumb just to use the most recent?

Okay, got version 3.68 installed and proper gapps. Haven't had time to really dive in to get everything set up. Everything is running smooth and quick. The only issue I have at the moment is that I can't get a 4g connection.

I have been jumping between a few ROMs for a period of time now and finally decided to stick with one which I think is stable, fast and gives the best battery life by far. I admit I haven't tried all of the ROMs out there, also people have different set ups and use their phone differently. So please take what I say as a recommendation only, and I mainly wish to share some of my experience as I know how frustrating it can be to choose a ROM out of so many choices. At the end I also want to share the MODs I have been using and how I have personalized my device, hopefully will help someone out there.
Note: I didn't use the same MOD for all ROMs! See more explanation below.
ROM
Just to make it clear, I wipe all before flashing a new ROM. I don't use any kind of backup software, yes that is right I don't, call me insane But the result of poor battery life or restart/FC should not be caused by these factors. I also install about the same app back (give a take a couple which I don't use often) after a flash. I also use the same set up for all my ROMs e.g. Auto brightness, screen on time and etc.
STOCK
I have been on stock LG G2 ROM for about 5 months I think, there are some nice features and I have to say it is probably the most stable ROM out there.
But for me, I experienced a bit of lag here and there.
I think many out there will agree with me, when I say the ROM doesn't have the best UI design. I would recommend installing Xposed Installer (xda) and G2 Xposed (play store) and make some modifications yourself.
The battery is ok, last a day for me and ends up with 30% on a good day (often below 15%).
The biggest feature for me is the knock code to unlock device, I do miss it.
I didn't compare but the Camera app is better than Google Camera (opinion, didn't test).
CloudyG3 v1.3
Used this ROM for about a month, stable enough for daily driver.
Some lags when using the phone in general. Animation slow down is the main reason I decided to go with another ROM.
UI looks much nicer than G2 since it is based on G3.
Can use G3 TweaksBox to tweak UI like you can with G2 Xposed, but most features will require you to pay. Which I did, but don't think it is worth the money. Most changes require you to reboot to see effect and it is buggy.
Again knock code is a plus, better than stock ROM I think.
Slightly better battery than Stock but not much better, I would say about the same. Been using the same MODs since.
Camera is also pretty good, on par with STOCK (opinion, didn't test).
Mahdi-ROM 09/20
This is a very popular recommendation, rated the most stable ROM. But it is the opposite for me, phone would restart and FC.
Some bugs listed on ROM page. This doesn't affect me, but may affect some of you.
Very similar to CM11, a lot of options to tweak, too much in my opinion.
Battery life about same as stock, again the ROM wasn't stable enough for me so can't possibly have amazing battery life. Same MODs as I have now.
No knock code.
ParanoidAndroid 06/28
This is my current ROM, glad I decided to try it.
Very stable, haven't had a single FC or restart yet and I have been on it for weeks.
This is the fastest ROM, I don't notice any animation slow down at all. Ok a few times with the keyboard I am using but pretty sure it is the keyboard app.
Amazing battery life. e.g. 10 hours since unplugged, 2 hour screen on, 76% left.
Has double tab to wake, but no Knock code
Good amount of built-in customization
MODs + app suggestions
Twilight app (or something similar), for less harsh light on the eye when reading at night.
Google Now Launcher + Xposed GEL Settings, I like the Google Now being included in the launcher itself.
LiOn Tamer (AKA Unbounded) to stop wake-locks, just install and then done no set up require.
Silence app, which turns phone silent for those who work at from 9am - 5pm.
Calendar + Calendar Mute app which turn phone silent for those who are at University with odd lecture times.
Hello there, I have been looking for a thread like this for a while, how do you think they compare to other major roms like Vanir, Eos etc in Speed/ performance etc??
are you running any custom kernels? Art or Dalvik?

Unfortunately I haven't tried all the ROMs, so can't give you any suggestion on them.
As for custom kernels and ART, I have been using whatever comes with the ROMs. The result on PA is so good (7.5 hours screen on time with 22% battery left), I never found myself in the situation of needing to tweak anything. Kernel is generally my last choice, because it is a lot of trial and error. The last I tried ART was when it was still in beta, I should really give it a go now it is more stable.
Can you provide a link to the 26/8 PA rom? Can't seem to find it in the PA thread cos there are only other dated roms. Sorry for being a noob cos I've never flashed aosp on my g2. Or which release did you use or would recommend?
Dont you miss the Qslide apps on stock roms? or the Qremote? (I use it all the time)
and thanks for sharing the expirience... I myself decided only to root the phone in the case that it won't be getting Android 5.0

When I first switched to AOSP roms I missed them a lot. Fortunately there is a mod for the quick remote but none for Qslide. Either way you'll find yourself not needing Qslide after some time.

I tried Qslide on stock, then never used it again. For me spliting the screen in half means i can't see much of anything. I think it might be useful when you get used to it, but I never really got used to it.
I never used Qremote because I don't own anything which requires a remote.
Sorry that I can't be more helpful.

Hmmm I see what you mean, I was unable to find the ROM through PA thread. I have uploaded the version i got, here's the link
I've tried all above except paranoid (and CM11)
I think it should be mentioned that photos quality on mahdi rom are horrible.
I tried other camera applications but the bad quality remained.
Is PA or CM11 like mahdi (camera quality)?

Unfortunately the camera on PA is also pretty disappointing, in my experience anything that is not based on stock ROMs has bad camera experience.

I tried, pa, mahdi, plain.. All three gave some strange issue or reboot. I have been totally unlucky with asop roms in this phone. I had better experience with others, like nexus, s2 or note 2.

Thanks man. I did try it. After restoring sms, the Android. process message kept popping up, and reinstalling from beginning was a bit too lazy by my side. There is a cm version based on stock kernel which looks promising for what I am looking for, so I am keeping an eye on this CM version. Thanks again.

Nice write up! I used Mahdi, PA and CloudyG3 and agree with your comments. I'm currently running cloudyg3 and would like to add a few notes to those who are interested. Disabling all the animations does speed things up for me and the dev made the G3 Tweakbox features all free. PA is my second favorite ROM, super smooth and stable. If camera was better on PA, it would be my daily driver.

Wish I downloaded it before the link died, but people commented saying they are unstable so I didn't download it. But I think it should be released today (3rd Nov) on the PA thread.

I'm really interested in trying the G3 rom. I've been using stock on this phone since I got it and I really love the built in features and stability. I've come from a long line of Nexus ownership and have a Nexus 7 2013 for AOSP support + latest updates.
I was really worried about the stability of the G3 port but feel a little more confident reading your review compared to other roms. Paranoid Android was always fun too, I just never tried it on my G2.

Yeah G3 Rom are very stable only some hiccups when you have too many apps open, apart from that everything is pretty good. Camera is normally the main selling point for most
Also I think going from stock -> G3 ROMs -> AOSP is a pretty good way going about it.

based in your experiences what's the best lollipop rom so far? Most stable, features, etc.
Have any of the non stock roms fixed the issue with BT phone call audio? Has CM figured out the data loss connection after a reboot? Do we have any working camera software for the non stock roms?
Thanks.
I'm not saying it's the best, but I'm running the official Blisspop build, and it's fantastic. Tap on/off works, BT calls work, no persistent location icon, and I haven't had a data loss yet.
Loving the cm12 op's 12/12 ROM. Sick, quick and slick. Not too many features just yet but awesome for me!!

Maybe its just me and I'm crazy...but lollipop seems pretty freaking boring and the battery life on PA is comparable to the battery life on my original nexus...pathetic

Lollipop just came to town. It's too early to judge, especially on stripped down alpha builds. Give it time. It'll get much better soon once the ROMs get more features loaded into them. I think stability is the main goal at this point though.

I agree with both of you - I read a quote the other day about lollipop being the "iOS" of Android and had to chuckle, as I that's pretty much how I currently feel Although pure, stock Android even in 4.x is relatively boring, too, so I'm definitely hoping once the stability is achieved that the awesome devs can start rolling in some changes to make it more customizable and useful!
So the only recommendation I have so far is Blisspop, anything else? So for the time being am I better off staying on stock in terms of features and stability?
Vanir has been awesome for me. That being said it's the only one I've tried since an early CM build. Vanir has been so stable I haven't had the need to try out any others even if they offer more customizations

Does audio over VT work in Vanir?
Team Vanir Commotio Build is really great.. and updates are virtually every day..
Nobody is going to be happy with ANY of the Lolli Builds for a WHILE when it comes to customization, because they are still working to STABLIZE it.. First comes Stability, then comes the rest.. Priority is Need over Want...
I am a HUGE fan of customizing my setup, and cant STAND leaving a rom "As it is"
But for this, we have to wait...unfortunately

I thought GPS was broken in all the lollipop builds. Which roms does it work in?
I have used several with no luck. Currently use PA because ot seems to be the best one now.
Also op should have made it a voting thread.
Im ing LS LP as my DD and so far im loving it, havnet had a chance to really play with it, but everything I use seems to be working, and its fast and smooth (for me at least)!!
give it a shot!
LS LP wins by a land slide. Bluetooth, GPS, data, no msc battery drain. Its perfect

I used liquid smooth and GPS did not work. Is there any known fix?
I am currently using CM12 12/17 and still dont receive MMS in full quality. Are there any lollipop builds that do or atleast have a fix for? This is really my only complaint about lollipop builds.
