I am running android 4.2.1 stock. I want to root and flash roms on my phone. My only concern is the brick bug. Is the brick bug on JB or only ICS??
If you don't know that the brickbug only affects 4.0.4 by now, I fear for your phone if you start messing with it. Leave it stock for everyone's sake, I.E if you'd done even the most meagre amount of research you'd know the answer to this.
the brickbug is with ICS 4.0.4 kernels only, when u wipe data factory reset , it wipes your emmc chip and then u will have to replace the entire board ( cost me 380 euros :crying: )
JB is safe as long as u do the rooting steps right
it's quite simple
u need a prerooted kernel like dorminax 8.14 and a rom like Aliance V8 and ODIN 3 ofcourse
if u want it in more details tell me

So its safe to wipe on 4.0.3 as well? Just not 4.0.4 correct?
4.0.3 is safe. Read the posts on this thread. 4.0.4 has brick bug. If any firmware other than this did they would of said I'm sure
4.0.4 bad
4.0.3 good
Update recovery with philz that will root safe with solid kernel
Dori to unstable. Read how to buddy. No spoon feeding

Hi guys. I am a new user in this forum and I really liked here. The question is I installed the latest official 4.0.4 for the nordic countries. I am on Tugapower 1.1 and on siyah kernel 3.4.1. I did not like 4.0.4 much and I want to go back to zeta rom 3.1. The best rom so far for me. But I saw that many user bricked their phones while trying to go back to aokp 4.0.4 or 4.0.3. I dont want to brick my phone like that. Emmc brick bug says sane chip. I am also on siyah but I am really scared to brick my phone. What can I do for a safe return to 4.0.3. Thanks in advance.
Siyah should be safe. But, for extra care, just flash a 4.0.3 Stock rom in odin and do wipe from there
I have to use 3g and no wifi avalible here. So I cannot download official 4.0.3 within a week or something. I have litening rom 3.6 tar.md5 file. It is 4.0.3. If I flash it, can it cause a brick. If siyah is totally safe, it would be perfect for me.
I wiped for 3 times in siyah when i am on 4.0.4. rom from cwm. Also I flashed a few different 4.0.4 on cwm. Nothing happened. Can 4.0.3 cause a brick. Is installing from cwm more risky than wiping.?
Roms in cwm format often do wipes in their scripts. Siyah is safe, 4.0.3 also
Thank you. In my country it is midnight and I have to sleep. I will flash zeta rom after 10 hrs. I will look at this topic when i woke up and if dont see any problem about flashing zeta rom, i will flash it and get rid of this 4.0.4 rom. Thanks again.
Finally I went back to 4.0.3 without promlem. Siyah is totally safe. I advise siyah to everyone who want to go back to 4.0.3 from 4.0.4.
4.0.3 vs 4.0.4

Gyz Stock 4.0.4 XWLPO have soft brick problem, if u use stock xwlpo kernel & go to wipe factory data, catch partition & delvic catch. Don't do these xwlpo with Siyah kernel 3.4.1. If u do, Gplay store, weather, maps, u tube etc don't work.

1. the Brick bug comes with Stock ICS 4.0.4 kernel, and if you flash 4.0.4 firmware, then you will have a "brick bug" kernel, but this doesn't mean your device is bricked. I believe you already know what can brick your device already
2. Your flash counter will never change
3. It's better to stay away from hardbrick rather than preparing to solve it. If you read the guides/ instructions and can ask good questions as you are doing right now, then you shouldn't hardbrick your device.

Thank you very much so I will stay away from this update until Jelly bean one comes out or a better firmware for 4.0.4.. as I am interested only in stock kernels and rom..

If you are interested in stock kernels then stay away from CWM recovery, very simple.
Why? because, the stock kernel of Jellybean update will most likely come with the bug.

So the only way for me to update and be sure of no brick is, either use Siyah kernel after 4.0.4 I9100XWLPX flash or flash 4.0.4 and hope there is no need for CWM (as I understand CWM is needed in case the flash gets stuck?), or flash and don't care until february 2013 when my warranty expires..
Sorry if these Q's. are a bit noobie

there is another way like in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619525
but is not the best way.
I was waiting my warranty expiration but there is no misteries to install a secure kernel and start installing custom roms.
i'm much happier with my CM10 than with my 4.0.3 touchwiz

1. yeah, the only way to ensure no brick after update is to flash a custom kernel. Some of the kernels you can flash include: SpeedMod kernel (very close to the stock kernel), Siyah kernel, Dream Kernel, Dorimanx Kernel etc. But seriously, you should consider this option. If you want to claim warranty, you can just simply flash the original stock kernel.
2. If you flash and you get stuck, you can also use the stock recovery. but you shouldn't get stuck anyway.
3. If you flash 4.0.4 now, you will still get Jellybean in November even before your warranty expires and If there is any need to claim warranty, you can always have your phone back to the previous state.
I recommend option 1. Update to 4.0.4 and flash a custom kernel.
good luck
i checked my phone with that app and it shows me "brick bug? yes. insane chip" so my phone can be bricked right?
right now im using android version 4.0.3, baseband version I9100XXLPW, kernel version 3.0.15-I9100XXLPW-CL413606
and i have some questions:
1. is my version that im using dangerous? or maybe its only 4.0.4?
2. there soon will be jelly bean 4.1.2 (or 4.2 im not sure) version of android so is it also dangerous? or it's only ice cream sandwich?
3. when 4.2 jelly bean will be officially able to use how upgarde my phone to it safely? odin? kies? or it does not matter?
4. what excatly i cant do if i dont want to get my phone bricked?
i know there is a lot of topics about that but i dont understand them.. i mean people are using hard language for me.. shortcuts etc..
so it would be nice if someone can answer for my questions in more simple way and explain a little bit what he mean.. please (than can erase topic )
for example im not sure what mean that dont do "wipe data and factory reset". so i cant go to settings>>back up and reset>>factory data reset?
or i only cant do that in that menu "volume up+menu+power buttons" (no idea how it's called)
and sorry for my english it's not my native language

1. You have the insane chip bit it`s only dangerous if you flashed an unsafe Kernel and do a Wipe data/factory reset using the popular ClockworkMod Recovery or also called CWM (Stock Samsung Recovery should be safe). However, as far as I know all 4.0.3 Firmwares should be safe from Hardbrick.
2.Yes the Jelly Bean Leak for the I9100 also has an unsafe Kernel and can potentially hardbrick your device if you do what I have described in 1. And yes Samsung will probably put out unsafe Kernels even in final Android releases because they don`t give a damn about the community.
3. If you have warranty then it`s the safest bet to do the update via Kies, altough if you flash a stock final firmware through Odin, it shouldn`t void your warranty (correct me if I`m wrong). However, from the moment you apply Root and/or a custom ROM to your phone you can forget about your warranty.
4. Stay away from unsafe Kernels, that are present on almost if not all 4.0.4 Stock Firmwares and the new 4.1.2 Jelly Bean leak.
So if you have plans to install something through CWM which requires Wipe through CWM, make sure you are using an safe Kernel like Siyah or Dorimanx etc. or of course a safe Stock Kernel.
Also reflashing a Nandroid Backup through CWM is also dangerous.
But if you don`t have CWM and won`t install it then you should be safe.

ahh sorry i forgot to write one more information about my phone..
yes i rooted it.. by uploading that 1 file. so i have that yellow triangle and 2 apps (supersu and cwm)
so i have unsafe kernel.. cause i have that yellow triangle but im using 4.0.3
but still i will simply avoid using that CWM and doing anything on it and when there will official 4.1.2 jelly bean release i will upgrade to it by kies without using cwm so i will be back to stock kernel which i hope will be safe
thx that was more usefull than reading in some topic 100 pages which i dont understand perfectly.. and on each page there is different info cause nobody is sure for 100% what he is writing

Yes you have void your warranty.
No you should be safe, because you are using a stock kernel from an 4.0.3 Firmware and at least to my knowledge they should be safe and Root itself has nothing to do with whether a Kernel is safe or not. If you would update to 4.0.4 then you would have an unsafe Kernel.
But of course if you want to be 100% sure you can always flash Siyah or Dorimanx Kernel with Odin because those Kernels are safe.
Pm me in your native (PL) language and I'll explain everything.

yeah i lost warranty second day i bought it cause of rooting it it was ginger bread 2.2
ahh okey! now i get all that stuff with kernels.. i thought rooting phone is doing something to kernel..
ok you are right that unsafe kernel that can brick my phone is from 4.0.4 only (and its stock one.. firmware.. wtf samsung! i can understand some modified kernels.. so hard to them to fix that and make it safe like Siyah or Dorimanx?)
i wont upgrade to 4.0.4 but good to know there are safe kernels to that version
and no reason to do that cause i think in 1 month firmware jelly bean 4.1.2 will be released
so lets only hope its stock kernel will be safe and wont brick phones.. or someone will do safe kernel to it
well i think thats all.. i know all i can sleep well now
thank you for help ^^

4.0.3 firmware is safe, the issue exists only in stock 4.0.4 ICS and if you are on 4.0.4 ICS don't perform any type of wipe, reset etc... Flash 4.0.3 firmware or lower version's like gingerbread or any custom rom with custom kernels, also custom kernels for 4.0.4 version's are safe theoretically but i still wont recommend it because I have seen people brick their phone from CWM, so the problem is with the kernel which has eMMc cap erase command, most custom kernels don't have it, but be warned an old Siyah kernel has it so use the newest one.
For the sake of safety i recommend that you flash 4.0.3 via Odin.

Use the latest Siyah its pretty amazing, i consider Odin as the safest method, even though if you can obtain Siyah as a zip file you can do it via CWM which is also a pretty safe and easy method for noobs, if you downloaded a tar flash via Odin or Mobile Odin.

you should be good if you go from a GB firmware to a JB one
or if u want you could flash a custom kernel in odin and then flash a KK ROM like CM11 or Slimkat

It`s very safe to flash Jellybean or Kitkat. Download the latest jellybean from sammobile and flash it with odin.. Look around for tutorials how to. Note that you will lose all your data, but your phone will 100% work. That brickbug was only on 4.0.4 version.. To be sure and safe flash jellybean and after that flash PhilZ-cwm6 - Safe Stock Based Kernel. If you need more info, i`ll help you. Cheers!:good:
