Notifications woes - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So after being a long time apple user and long time iTunes hater ... I managed to sell my iphone 4 and bought a samsung galaxy S4, did the same for my other half...
Keep in mind, this is a brand new, no-root, default phone.
The issue basically is notifications, for whatsapp ( at the moment since I haven't set up anything else that requires push, besides gmail). The issue is once I turned the screen off, either manually or by itself. whatsapp notifications randomly stop arriving until I turned on the screen, completely close the app and open it again, the same goes for 2 other devices ( 3 in total), this happens with wifi or mobile data
Device #1. new s4,
Device #2 new s4
Device #3 Samsung galaxy young running 4.1.2 JB.
Now, device #3 belongs to a friend of mine who told of these issues a couple of months ago, however I did pay attention as I just figured it was network connection or wifi or whatever be it.
I've googled the hell out of this and it is apparently an android issue:
it's not telco related in my case, because i had NO ISSUES on my iphone 4 nor my best half's 4s.
Anyway, hopefully someone here has been through something similar and been able to fix it? I've searched the forums and there's apparently a widespread issue, but not fix as of 4.2.2?
New to the forum, I originally posted this here
neowin.net/forum/topic/1163306-android-notifications-woes-with-whatsapp/[/url]
Which eventually led me to post here so.
Edit: just figured this is posted in verizon gs4... is there a forum for international unlocked 9500? would a mod be so kind to move it without deleting this?

[Q] Any major issues yet?

hey everyone, i've had my Captivate since it was released last year, but i really want to upgrade it. i'm a little underwhelmed by the specs of the Galaxy Nexus when compared to the SGSII (which is what i was waiting to compare before i just purchased it).
anyways, are there any nagging issues that i should know about before upgrading (like the GPS issue with the Cappy, even though mine always worked perfectly)?
thanks.
Speaking for myself, this has been an absolutely solid device from the moment I got it. Couldn't be happier...
Not a single issue I can think of.

no major issues yet but the only thing that people have complained about is some screen issues. There have been lines that seemed to be burned into the screen when you view dark images. I have one but i rarely notice it so I'm not concerned and its not a big deal for me. otherwise, i think thats pretty much it. Any other issue that you have can be checked while at the store so you can exchange it while you are there.
No issues here, upgrading also from a week 1 captivate.

Nope. I haven't even found any minor issues. Rock solid, all the way around.
Only problem I've had is the AP Mobile widget eating up my data even after I turned it off and set the refresh settings to none. Ended up having to root/freeze it just to stop. Samsung and AT&T were of no help. Reading a forum or two here and there shows I'm not alone - but I don't think it is extremely widespread.

I've found the AP Mobile application to be terrible on every device I've used.
Based on my recent experience, I'd have no problem believing that.
I never consider AT&T bloatware to be a "major issue" - even though it's a major deficiency in the out-of-the-box experience, as long as it's fixable, it's not major to me.
So far so good...had good battery out of box for me....running un-named...no complaints my self

I have no major issues with mine. I'm rooted and running cognition now and it's a solid as when it was stock. This is my third android phone and the first keeper for me having been unhappy with earlier products running android.

If it ends up sending someone over a data limit and costing money, I'd say its a pretty big deal. At least something to keep an eye on.
As a launch-day Captivate user myself, believe me the SGSII is a night and day difference. Especially in the speed and battery departments. Even running stock is a much smoother experience than many of the custom ROMs I had flashed on my Cap.
The build quality seems to be very good, even for an initial run.

Same here, this thing is great. Fast, smooth and great battery. I've ran Cognition and now UnNamed, both are smooth.
I never had any problems with my Captivate other than battery. Unlocked it for my wife to use on T-Mobile and she is getting 24-30 hours on a charge w/3-4hrs display time. The only difference in the set up is the amount of emails and texts when I used it was more than she uses it.
By and large I have had few problems. This is the phone that the Captivate should have been (good GPS and compass and LED flash and front facing camera).
Once I had a problem with GPS acquiring a lock, even with very adequate SNRs as shown by GPS Test (Chartcoss), but it immediately reverted back to great after a reboot.
Occasionally the Facebook app will lag is some aspects, but I can't tell if it is the app or the network.
To OP,
Yes, there are some issues that I have with this phone. Some big, some small but all in all - IMHO not deal breakers...
I'm a 3+ yrs iphone 3G user sitting on the fence between the iphone 4S (pre-release) and SG2. When AT&T announced official release of the SG2 on Oct 2., I made a beeline to two local AT&T stores and both sold out, but they did have the unit on display and when I comared the iphone 4 (non S) vs. the SG2, I instantly fell in love with the Lighter Weight, Larger screen and super thin size of the SG2 over the iphone 4 (non S)...
The problem at hand to answer your question is here:
1. No FM radio - Originally advsertised as an available feature on AT&T website but has been removed. Available on internation i1900 but not on AT&T SGH-I777
2. Samsung DIVE - Samsung's version of lost/stolen phone support *FREE* to all Samsung mobile device yet *CRIPPLED* by AT&T...
3. No visual Voicemail - But then again this is an Android issue not Captivate to SG2 (remember I'm coming off an iphone 3G)
4. NFC missing - Confirmed by AT&T that it was disabled but *supposedly* to return at a later date via firmware update...??? Will update *NERF* the SG2 to comply with APPLE's suit about copyright infringment (this is mere SPECULATION from my part ONLY!!!!)
Makes me MAD that AT&T strips out useful and FREE tools and installs crappy BLOATWARE like AT&T NAVIGATE that I cannot remove wthout ROOTING the phone... Sorry not ready to that just yet but the promise of FREE tethering has me thinking about it...
Samsung has already had to *MOD* some Tablets & phones(?) overseas because one foreign court ruled against Samsung claiming that their OS too closely resembles the IOS and a firmware MOD fixed the SCROLLING method to further distinguish Touchwiz from IOS... Could Samsung/AT&T firmware update that includes NFC then also NERF the UI (if they lose in U.S. Court Case???)
Sorry for rambling on but I think I've answered your questions about my pet peeves with the unit so far I'm really REALLY like the SG2 and after 2 weeks I do NOT have buyers remorse nor do I feel an attraction to the iphone 4S...

thanks for your opinion, but i was merely asking about actual hardware/software problems, not personal opinions about the lack of included apps/features.
I think Google Voice is a million (yes literally a million) times better than the visual voicemail on the iPhone.
I did think of one issue I have had. Its minor, but was really frustrating. The stock android keyboard preinstalled seems to be off. The biggest time for me was that I would try for a c and get a space. I am not a fan of the Samsung keyboard, but Gingerbread Keyboard from the market seemed to fix it.

Hardware/Software problems - REDUX
1. When locked with Passcode or Pattern swipe and then hitting the power button to start the phone, 7 times out of 10 you get the pattern screen, the other 3 times the unit BYPASS the security all together and you can get right in
2. Voice recognition by Voice Action or VLingo, sometimes won't pick up your voice, intermittently strays off of Listen mode (Green) and sits there numbly until you exit restart the VOX
3. Slight BLUISH tint when viewing the SUPER AMOLED screen, when viewing directly on the screen this is a non issue.
4. GPS unit not quite as accurate as my old iphone. Driving around I find the ICON moving OFF road and plowing through houses/buildings on map... This is despite the GPS's S/N ratio is over 85db and locked onto multiple satelites...
IMHO - these issues are NON dealbreakers for me and the more glaring offenders are the missing FM radio and NFC but to each his own...
Good luck...!

Agreed that Google Voice is awesome and in many ways superior to Visual Voicemail, however, why couldn't Google Voice have been built in and tied directly to the phone? Why do CALLS have to be first forwarded behind the scenes to Google Voice in order to access Google Voice's Visual Voicemail...?
That's my only gripe with it, I'm using Google Voice on the phone, but I'm peeved that an extra step was needed... IMHO, but judging from some of the other threads I've been reading, I'm not exactly alone on this thought...

The issue here was with stock settings. If you set a pattern lock, then lock the phone. When you wake the phone, let the screen go back to black, then hit the power button. 100% of the time, if you do it that way (let the screen go off then press power again) you get the standard swipe to unlock and bypass the lock pattern.
There is an easy fix. In the lock screen settings set the timeout to immediate (default is 5 minutes) and it will 100% fix the issue.

The great Lumia 920 conspiracy.......

Am I the only person that's noticed the cover up (or at best complete overlooking) of the 920 MANY issues?
Let me say, I own(d) a 920 and I loved it so much I looked past all its flaws, and I dealt with a lot. Previous owner factory reset it right in front of me and we know what that means. I spent the next 12 ****ing hours unbricking the thing just so I could use it! Now, after owning the 920 a freakin week, it stops reading my SIM card suddenly so now I'm back with android.
I just notice that no tech site has EVER run any articles about the litany of major issues with this phone. Hell even in the forums nobody seems to have put it together! Am I the only one who sees it??
Bricking on factory reset
Battery life issues
Black screen on calls
Hardware buttons randomly not working, requires soft reset
Phone suddenly stops reading SIM cards
I'm sure I'm missing some but those are the one I dealt with. Am I alone?

I've been using the 920 for 2.5 months now and I have none of your issues. I had the restart bug but it got fixed with portico update. also there is some dust under the FFC but i don't care because it is not on the lense and it don't use it anyway.
i know about black screen and factory reset bug but i read for the 1st time that there should be major problems with the SIM card or the hardware buttons.

My son has had the 920 since it came out...Other than *****ing about the lack of the most popular apps (instagram, temple run, Jetpack Joyride...etc) the phone has been nothing but flawless. He will never give it up because he is an xbox junkie lol
i've had it for almost 2 months now..
only issue i've had is the crashing (normally every couple of days), since updating seems ok so far...I've flashed a few 'roms' to it, EE branded and normal
I thought the screen going blank in calls was supposed to happen? Like to save power? last couple of phones i've had turn the screen off when you put it to your head?
I'll be honest, i'm a little disapointed in windows phone 8, after coming from 7 with no crashes for a year (apart from once when i started messing with the registry) I found windows phone 8 quite shocking, coming from android/windows mobile i'd say its not to bad, but in someways it seems a downgrade. But so far no crashes with the latest update, and i'm hoping it stays that way, but honestly, I have a feeling your issues are isolated.
Also had the chance to use the new nexus 4 the other day, if theres a cover up going on, i'd say its those who say android is smooth and responsive....
I've been using my 920 for a month and haven't encountered any of your problems. The only thing I don't like about my 920 is that there is no app so far to automatically switch phone profile according to time and location.
I'm shocked 2 of you have had no problems. Search Google for any of the problems I listed and you'll find loads of people with the same issues.
Id get another one but I can't afford to keep buying phones when one ****s up. And yea the screens supposed to go black when you put it to your head but it was going black and staying like that so I could end calls, use the num pad, use speaker phone, or any of that. I found a work around but the proximity sensor is supposed to work

Search google for ANY electronic device followed by the keyword 'issue / problem' and you are sure to get pages of results. People that don't have problems (most people) typically don't post about it while people with issues regularly post because they want the issue resolved. This gives an artificial bias to the negative and only reinforces the already tainted view of people in a mindset that something is rubbish.

I agree, since the last update I haven't had very many problems at all. And since I haven't been having issues I haven't been coming to the forums as much. I just come in every once in a while now to see if there's anything new. I'm not constantly hounding for an answer to my problems on a daily basis since I don't have problems. It's my guess that other people who have perfectly working phones would have like minds as me... or just not visit the forums at all.
No bricking during factory reset (had to do it once and I'm not going to do it again just to prove a point).
Battery life is awesome.
Hardware buttons are working fine.
Blank screen during calls isn't an issue for me since the proximity sensor works almost all the time, I think.... at least, it hasn't been a big enough concern for me that I actually notice it.... guess I should keep track of it.

This is also the main thing I'm missing, coming from Nokia N8 the situations was really a great app...
I think Nokia lumia phones in general have a lot of issues, as does Windows Phone. It's just there are so few users even if there was a problem, it would seem isolated. Microsoft's share in the smartphone market didn't even budge at all in 2012. WP users are not power users so they just run back to the store to get an exchange. Even the lumia 920 forum at wpcentral.com is slow as molasses. 90% of the posts are very shallow anyway. Most don't even know what screen size their phone is or what processor its running. the camera is just AMAZING and the phone is PERFECT, over and over again. Of course, this forum isn't any better. The only difference being the plethora of unlock threads, because xda is international.
Your description of WP users is fairly accurate & the market segment MS is going after. The enthusiast market is small & even on Android accounts for a very small % of sales. The easiest way to solve an issue is by exchanging the phone, if you have that option available to you. A lot of issues people are having are either caused by defective hardware or a bad flash IMO, which is an issue on any of the platforms.
Do people not expect bugs and hiccups at launch for these kinds of devices?
It happens. And it's not as bad as you perceive; it's not a conspiracy.
AW: The great Lumia 920 conspiracy.......
If ms allows developers create store accounts for free I bet there would be more apps on store.,.
I get what you guys are saying, but phone busting issues like that black screen on calls and bricking on hard resets shouldn't be common enough to have a thread full of people experiencing them.
If anyone knows of any way to get the phone to read SIM cards again, I'd like your help. I still miss using my lumia 920 :'(

I have experianced just about every issue in this thread. I have users of the 920 I support for other stuff and I see how they basically ignore them as they did on their Blackberry or iPhone. I had the brick issue... news flash as I posted in another thread, it is not bricked!!! use the Nokia Care Suite, gets you going no problem. During my day I may deal with just about every phone they see at an AT&T store (Tmobile, Sprint,or Verizon for that matter)... they all have issues. Have you ever seen an iPhone user change their password on their laptop and not update the iPhone? Lets say you need to get to something before updating that password, like they changed the server setting trying to update it... go ahead try it. Drop calls, Steve Jobs had to properly instruct dumb iPhone users how to hold an iPhone. Andriod, perfect????? WTF are serious?? And becuase of that piece of software, it does not matter what hardware you are talking about.
My phone is limited compared to Andriod, I can agree with that.... but I can do more with fewer Apps and I like that. The 920 has had some hiccups along the way, but the hardware I have right now is as solid as any other phone out there, actually physically a tougher phone then any other top tier phone.

This is exactly what I was trying to get at. These sorts of issues and threads are everywhere for many high profile smartphone launches, especially lately with this insane obsession with HW spec wars.
I've seen much worse, many times, you will not buy a high end smartphone at launch these days without having some sort of worry that there will be a game-breaking bug or defect.
WP 8 for 3 months:
NO ISSUES
POWER USER (i had portico when the first roms were available on navi)
my question is, are all these faulty devices on ATT or another crap american service , cause i think this may be your problem, ive had to work on vodaphone orange tmobile and ee 920's and 820's and i can say with pride that the only issue people have is the lack of popular apps., there is no conspiracy. why the eff are you people needing to hard reset anyway wtf are you doing to your phones?
I have to admit I've been having freezing issues regularly, often when it's just sat on my desk or in my pocket, and almost every night while on USB charge. I've also noticed on the odd occasion a reboot, but only because of my SIM being PIN locked.
Mine was a German Vodafone one, which I flashed on day 1 to the CV_GB ROM, then again to CV_GB Portico ROM. Maybe I'll try a different one, as I've heard the EE one has fewer issues.

Hi Everyone
I am not new to the forums, i have been reading it for a long time but decided to join today because i don't know if anyone has ever experienced something like the problem i am having.
Whatever i type in my phone whether it is a text message, a whatsapp message or a google search appears in a friend's phone 5000 miles away
Here is a little bit of a history. This friend logged in to his facebook etc from my phone when his phone got stolen in Brazil back in January. He then got a new Samsung Galaxy s3(the problem didn't occur with that new phone) then he switched to an S4 1 month ago. After he switched to s4 he says everything i type shows up on his phone. He lives in Tirkey i am in USA. Somehow these two phones are connected but i don't know how.
Has anyone ever heard a problem like this?

He is my best friend and i have known him for 25 years. He sent me screenshots from his phone. For instance my searches come up in his search history. My text messages are in his messages folder. He sends me screenshots every night showing the searches i made that day. Or the messages i sent. He can't see the responses i get but everything i type in my phone is also in his phone.
I don't have teamviewer on my phone. But i know how it works and this is not it. One thing i could think of is Google + and Google Now. Somehow Google or Samsung connected these two phones

[Q] Recovery of Auto-deleted Voicemail

Hello all. I hate to ask the question because I am pretty positive I know the answer, but I figured if anyone would know how to figure it out it would be someone from XDA.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900A), through AT&T; everything is stock, running version 4.3. Un-rooted.
I've had an individual harassing me, leaving voice-mails threatening to sue me for "Unfinished Work/Did Wrong" when it was his lack of knowledge that ruined it after I had fixed it. Between these voice-mails was one that he said everything was perfectly fine and that the problem had nothing to do with what I did and that he apologized; yet he is now still threatening me claiming it was my fault. This voice-mail of him saying everything was fine was my only proof that I had in fact, done the work correctly.
Being a customer of AT&T, it requires you to go through all of your voice-mails every 2 weeks and save all your messages that you don't want deleted - with no warning of when they're actually going to get deleted. I unfortunately missed the 2 week period by TWO days.
My question to you, XDA, is there anyway that I can get these messages back? Through Synced accounts (Samsung, Google (I did not have Google Voice set up at the time)). Do the voice-mails save locally anywhere - even if I root can I reach them anywhere?
I do not have any type of other voice-mail (Visual Voice Mail-like App). And I've sat on the phone for hours with AT&T while they gave me the run-around.

Battery drain

Hey guys!
First of all, I'd like to apologize if I'm posting to the wrong forum, but I couldn't find anything more fitting to my problem.
TL,DR: For the last few years, I've been noticing about 50% of my phone's battery being used by either "Google Play Services," "unaccounted," or "Cellular activity," according to both the built-in Android Battery Manager, and SystemPanel 2.
I've tried numerous devices, kernels, ROMs (official and unofficial), you name it, but at last, it came down to my main Google account being the issue (when using a throwaway account, the battery drain stopped).
My daily driver's been a OnePlus 3T for over two years now, but I have noticed the same issue on other devices too (Galaxy S3, Redmi Note 3, some cheapo Samsung phone I had lying around the house). IIRC, when setting up my phone for the very first time (right after purchase), it was okay for about half a year, then the phone basically never went into deep sleep, always ran hot when performing even basic tasks for over like two minutes.
I had contacted OnePlus themselves, the *sigh* Google Community forums, but never really got a definitive answer, other than "switch to another account," which I don't want to have to do.
Linus had described his issues with Samsung phones in this video, and I'd say the issue is more or less the exact same in my case, except it's not Samsung phones only
If any of you have any suggestions/things I should try, or could just recommend me a forum on which I'd have more luck getting an answer, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Have a great one!
