Network settings and questions - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

I'm a bit confused on the network settings. For example GSM/wcdma,which should I use or leave it to both? What exactly is wcdma? Also on select preffered network do I want GSM or the uxxx (whatever the other is)? As is I get great 4g when I'm out and about but at home my phone just sits with an x in place of signal. Seems it should switch to 2g (is that what T-Mobile calls 3g?) Or g. It occasionally will with good signal but drop it immediately ....

The 4636 menu doesn't do anything on my phone. And the service menu just gives me an error when I go to service providers. This 2g is definitely not 3g its ungodly slow!

Strangest thing, while I was trying to unlock the bootloader with the open (euro?) Version I flashed the radio for it and got 3g and hspa. Only time I've seen it, back on usual jellybean w latest baseband and its 4g or 2g again.

Have to Force 3g?

I have this odd issue where I can be in an area that I know has 3g but my phone won't use it unless I set it to wcdma manually. It only says edge unless I change it. It then picks up 3g and works fine, anyone know a solution or reason it does this, it appears agnostic to rom or modem as it has happened in various configurations.

This is a dumb question, but is the 3G weak in your area?

Not at all when i do change it over to wcdma is gets full signal usually. I get 2-4 download as well when i change it.

[Q] Firmware Band Selection

Guys,
I am about to received my SGS 2 tomorrow.
I am in Australia on a 850mhz 3g (read not GSM) network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_G)
I know the phone supports this band, but I see some region firmwares floating around and am wondering if ALL firmwares support this band? Or is firmware specific.
Thanks guys.
Im on VR1.1 with everything else stock and next g is cool with me. Preordered from UK so mines from release.

Can I ask how you know your on Next G and not just 3g?
You can use non 850mhz Bands with Telstra and get std 3g.
Well im just assuming. But where i live all my family get 1bar with optus/3/voda whereas i get full bars. If u have a way for me to check ill have a look

not really sure how to check, the best I could figure out is install Network Info II and check network type
Should be HSDPA/UMTS?
I cant seem to find any tool to tell you exact frequency the phone is using.
It is not firmware dependent (If someone buys a Vodaphone branded SGS2 it is still going to work with NextG, but it will probably just be SIM locked). NextG is HSPA noted by the 'H+' symbol. When I was on Three is was just 'H' which is HSPDA.
If you dial *#*#4636#*#* and go phone information -> menu key -> Select Radio Band -> AUS2 Band
AUS2 is NextG 850Mhz, so if you get internet access on that, it is running NextG. The Phone Information section will also tell you your current network protocol also. If it is reporting UMTS then click the 'run ping test' button, it will flick over to HSPA
Hspa when data is being used
Umts when data is inactive

Also just rum some speed tests and you'll know if you're on 3g or HSDPA.

thanks guys.
Once it has charged I will put SIM in and test all this, very excited as moving from my HTC Desire
Sorry to dig this post up from the grave, but I'm about to move my SGSii to Telstra, as well.
I was wondering if you found benefit to these changes, and if you've changed anything further since.
Have you found any particular ROM/modem to be better (either in reception or battery life) than others.
And, finally, what sort of battery life do you get? I get about 14 hours before I have to plug it in, but I get terrible reception at work (I'm currently on 3), so I'm thinking that might have something to do with it.
Thanks heaps.

Please help with 3g

I can't get any internet when on g or 3g only when on h. I don't know what's going on. I'm on the latest update. Oh and I'm with Vodafone.
Thanksbkn advance, jay

That is normal when on GSM you only get Edge (E or G) when on WCDMA you get 3G HSDPA connection speeds depending on your contry and zone (ofcorse on the antenna in that area).
No, I'm on auto mode so it selects itself. Its just when the signal drops from a H signal to a 3G signal or a G signal and that's what is displayed on my phone then no internet can be accessed at all. The phone connection is still fine, just internet or anything that uses internet connection, won't load.
I hope that makes more sense

i have tried all jelly bean roms, but gsm only mode just cannot work.

when in testing mode, i cannot get gsm only work. every time jump to wcdma preferred. anyone know how to fix this?

Unfortunately no...
The "ATT" note is carrier locked, and network locked as well.....not allowing the user to choose individual bands or frequencies.
To date, no rom or hack exists to truly unlock the ATT version for GSM only function....that I've ever found, and none of the play store apps will unlock the network either..
My last phone (HTC) would allow this switch on the network, but the samsung note will not..
But the International version of the note is unlocked for network switching between bands. ( I guess I should have got that one..LOL )
I too would love this feature, but it appears we are not going to get it.....g
Thank you for your reply. But i can use gsm only while i am using black star rom.
I think all official based rom could probably do it. *#2263# is the code to do it. But this code can only be used on official based rom.
On the contrary, cm 10 roms can use *#*#4636#*#* in which the gsm only mode is a fake one, i mean every time i click it, just switch back to wcdma preferred.

And I've tried the *#2263# option as well, and been on every rom the forum has to offer, yet sadly, I always get reverted back to preffered...
It sucks !!......g
Noob question! Why do you need the GSM feature? I thought the WCDMA option has the at&t bands for 4G. 1900/2100 right?

Some people also believe 2g/EDGE saves power, but in fact it makes no difference.
That sucks!!! Where do you live?

Me ??
Just south of Salt Lake City, Utah .....
Right in the middle of ****tyserviceville.......LOL
I was curious about it awhile back, so I did a google search/study, and I found many sources that said it made no difference in power use. I mean, why would it? The modem uses the same power for any mode.
Lovely city. My ex lives there. Park City is also pretty chill as well. But that just sucks that you don't get 4G.

I don't need to save power. But the thing is in my office there is no wcdma signal. If i not use gsm only mode, there will be no signal at all.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Then I guess you're just going to have to revert back to the stock ROM if you want service at work. I don't see any other options here.
Sent from my SGH-T879 using xda app-developers app
Unless the device gets a "true" network unlock, or the devs find a work around....I'm afraid your right...
the stock rom even suffers, but at least it auto switches to a 2g signal once in a great while....
I'm on my rooted OC'ed GB build this week, and I have marginal signal...and a few calls have come through...so it's not all death and destruction...but close...LOL...g

Forcing 2g on gnote using straight talk???

I've been using android phones since the g1 and I was always able to force 2g in setting on cyanogen but since I got my gnote set up I can't force it to 2g ibjave tryed different ics and jb roms but no luck it will just go dark for a min then nothing and stay on 4g

The modem is restricted so you can't change the bands. It's set to switch to the best signal.
The idea of using 2G to save battery consumption is a wives tale. There isn't any difference anymore.
I would hope that's the only reason to want to switch to 2G!
But yeah, with current technology 3G/4G is no longer a battery killer like it once was. Especially on our state of the art awesome Galaxy Notes!
I do not agree with this entirely, because at college I only get 2g all the time! ANd my battery never gets below 75% when I am home it bounces from 3g/4g and even sometimes to 2g I live in a weird area lol...And my battery gets down to 30-35% when I am home doing the same things.....
The modem in the phone is on or off, and it doesn't downshift if it has to run on a lower band. It's like a light bulb -- on or off.
Don't take my word for it, google the topic and you can read what the engineers say.
You can't do the same things with 2G and 4G networks (at least not without pulling your hair out).
I must disagree with you, 2G and 4G switch is available in international GNote. So there is a way to swtch it. And if i am in zone of low 3/4G signal zone, it always switch to 2-3-4 G, so it also make the battery drain faster. In HOX AT&T there is a command you can dial some code and get into menu for switching Bands. There should be somthing like this in Note also.
There is a dial code for this modem but it is a restricted menu. You can't make a selection on it.

To get the option, you would need Samsung modem software and be able to edit the file and unrestrict the band selector. That is something that has never been leaked, unfortunately.
ranger captain is right, so...
this is what I did:
root
flash T-Mobile modem
*#2263#...
not sure if you are using att straight talk though.

That's actually a solution for this OP who wants 2G on Straight Talk network. If he follows your instructions, because of the hardware, all he will be able to get is EDGE connection for data.
