hi,
i'm considering to buy the xperia tablet z 32GB. but i've some concerns about the bootloaders.
how can i know if the tablet i'm about to buy has a unlockable bootloader or not? is there any visible way to know? i'm considering to buy it at a informatic store fnac. it's not an operators brand so what's the probability that their tablet have locked bootloader? from what i've read locked bootloaders usually come from branded devices, right? so, if the tablet they have in exhibit has an unlockable bootloader does that mean all the other tablet in that stora are the same?
thanks
I bought my Tablet Z at a department store and my bootloader is NOT unlockable. I am happy with the stock kernel, as long as I can root and install a working recovery.

I had no earthly clue that some were unlockable and some weren't...... What exactly is the difference between them?

i think you need to unlock the bootloader to flash all the kernels and roms. also, things like dual boot need unlocked bootloaders to work.

I know what unlocking a bootloader does, why you have to unlock it, etc. I was under the impression that ALL the Xperia Tablet Zs were unlockable though and from the post I quoted above it sounds like only certain ones are. So which are unlockable and why are only some unlockable?

from what i've read in this forum some users have unlockable bootloaders. i was trying to figure out if there was a way to know it before buy

I wonder if the ones that aren't unlockable are the LTE models?

Got mine from Darty (SGP311) and my BL is unlockable. Usually for mobile it's the carrier that locks the bl, so if it's wifi only tablet it should be unlockable no matter where you get it.
If there is an exposition device just access service menu to check if it's unlockable.

I cant seem to unlock my bootloader as it says on the service menu not allowed, so was wondering if there is antother way without unlocking bootloader?
Not currently, I'm in the same boat.

yep mine too on o2, i found this link on a old XDA thread about paying to unlock the bootloader (can't link as a new member but if you search for phoneunlockserver)
I'll use that as a last option if all else fails
I would be willing to pay for a working root solution on my locked bootloader XpS
My biggest fear is...xda devs have worked with Sony to get certain bootloaders unlocked. So it will be locked down pretty tight i'm guessing.
Hopefully they left open a root option without the need of unlocking the bootloader. If so i'm hoping the solution comes fairly soon.
The bloatware they have stuck on here is ridiculous,

It's possible that you may well be able to root without unlocking the bootloader. There was something called Zerg Rush exploit on other phones, which is what I used on my Xperia Arc.

That exploit was fixed by SE in in .62 firmware for arc. It will not work for XS. (again, prove me if I'm wrong )
I am checking this thread often from now on. I just had an xda break for over a year (iphone) but i am planning to buy this phone next month. Of course the big charm is to root and theme the thing to your own hand.

My Xperia S was rooted from day 1.
But I don't have a carrier-provided phone which is not unlockable.

No, you have the wrong understanding. Phones that are provided by, or customized by, a carrier are usually not "unlockable" due to the warranty claims. Only phones bought directly, or paid for in full (rather than on a "lease" from the carrier) are unlockable.
It's a matter of who carries the warranty and what they decided to do with it.
Ok, i will buy one without contract so i assume its not provider locked...

I hope so as well, I loved messing about with my Desire with the roms on this site, almost made the end of the 2 year contract bearable.
Still waiting for easy root process. :-( Don't wanna unlock bootloader. Guys, do something.
There is nothing we can do with locked bootloaders as of yet until there is method to use s1 tool which unlocks bootloader like it did for the 2011 devices
I really want my xs rooted but like I said not possible as of yet

Apparently sim-unlock a sim-locked XS won't make any difference to the bootloader status.
Does anyone know if flashing it to another official rom (un-brand it) make any change?
Nop it wont

It all depends where are you taking it from. If you are taking it from retailer, such as T-Mobile, more than likely it will be simlocked, because T-Mobile does not want you i.e. to use that phone with another network SIM card, but if you buy it from shop, like Sony, Phones4U, Carphone Warehouse, etc... they are selling unlocked phones, so they could simply put any mobile carrier SIM card in. There are exceptions though.
Hi!
I have a brand new Xperia Z Ultra and I was looking for unlocking my boot loader however, after checking the *#*#7378423#*#* "boot loader unlock allowed", I am surprise to see that I am not allowed to unlock my boot loader.
Are there any way I can bypass this ?
Nope

Are you on Bell? They've locked the bootloader, so it's not possible to unlock it. Even Sony can't help you. It's the same thing Verizon does with most of its devices, and it's quite pathetic.

The Xperia Z Ultra is exclusive to Bell in Canada. The only way to get an unlockable bootloader is to buy from Sony, Google, or import from somewhere they are sold unlocked.

I'm with Bell as well - and I didn't even bother making the call you did because I can't imagine more than 1 employee at the entire corporation would have any idea what a bootloader is - let alone how to unlock it.
It's just not very common technical knowledge - even with 'technical support'.
And I don't think it's possible for there to ever be a workaround - we will never be able to flash a non-stock based ROM. Period.

i have to agree with this. I work for bell and let me tell you everyone askes be to do this stuff for them and when i call our help desk.....lets just say that my son knows more then the people there. Best thing to do is hope there might be a work around. as for right now. you are stuck with the unlockable bl.
If you do the sim unlock for a bell device, do you get the bootloader unlock as part of it? Or are you just unlocking the sim side? I wasn't sure if the option would be available with one... you get the other....

That is only a carrier-unlock.
Very sad. I bought a Z ultra on Craigslist and I unfortunately noticed that I cannot unlock the bootloader. It says "bootloader unlock allowed no" after I dial *#*#7378423#*#*.
Does anyone know is it possible to unlock bootloader now?
Thanks very much
Hi guys,
I'm thinking of buying this tablet (or maybe Z2, as soon as It rolls out) but I'm afraid of getting a device with a not unlockable bootloader. I'd have a no-brand one. Is there the possibility that the bootloader is locked on my new tablet without the possibility of unlocking It? I read somewhere that carriers can request sony to unlock the bootloaders of the devices they sell (but, as I said, I'd have a no brand one).
In short, what does getting a not unlockable bootloader depend on?
Thanks a lot

I think sony themselves should unlock the bootloaders, kinda like htc does. My old Xperia tablet s had unlocked bootloader when they bought it back from me, so they should get the point. but OMG can't wait to buy tablet z2! You think it will be available for purchase after mwc?

Bou I've read in this forum of threads like "FOR UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS ONLY" and about a method to see If your bootloader is unlockable (something like #7#blablabla*. This is a real pain in the ass. Is there a way to know that Sony's criteria are to make bootloader non unlockable?

Generally all Xperia devices bought unlocked (not from any carrier) are able to be bootloader unlocked. Some carriers block that, but not all of them.
To check, follow the tutorial: http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/06/20/xperia-tablet-z-how-to-access-the-service-menu/
At the menu, go to Service Info, then Configuration and check that.

A non unlockable bootloader is not easily unlocked, it will take upto 2 years to unlock a single device so its pointless, and even then this unlock will only work on that device so no, no unlock
As for aosp roms, all we need is a third kernel in the system partition, its quite hard but done before and works fine when done

Can't you flash an AOSP based ROM if you use EasyRoot, install XZDualRecovery and then use TWRP/PhilZ to flash?
A bit off topic but.
Did i miss something in the android world - i have never had a sony device before (always used htc even before htcdev) but what changed once upon a time usually exploits came around in a matter of months not years. So did sony invent the ultimate protection system or something like that ?

All latest firmwares for all Xperia devices (Z,Z1(s and c) Z2 and all older devices could be rooted..
Z2 is 2-3 month old device and we have root method for all firmwares...
That doesn't have anything with custom ROMs or AOSP ROMs.
Locked bootloader is something totally diferent.
Locked bootloader is something Sony won't do , that's something requested by operators (mostly t-mobile) - Google it and you'll get it..

I had the note 3, which is rootable, but you could not unlock the bl,and you could only run aosp roms. That didn't work for me. I'm just wondering, so when I change phones I know which phone to get. I believe if I'm not mistaken, that most Verizon androids are locked on the bootloader. That doesn't mean that root isn't impossible, it just means that exploits would need to be used to create a root.

It really depends on which phone you have, I'm almost 99% sure that the bootloaders for the Nexus 6p's can be unlocked without the carriers permission. Google is really great about that, but on the other hand the Verizon S5 has a locked bootloader.
