[MOD] Heat Fix..for now - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I finally fixed the heat issue with the Galaxy S4..
Type: MOD
Difficulty: Medium..Easy for tech savvy people like myself.
This MOD requires you to dissemble your Galaxy S4, Thus voiding your warranty, however, if you take it apart successfully without damaging it, verizon/your carrier/Samsung will not know
Tools Needed: Small Philips head screw driver , Guitar Pick, or case opener.
Remove all screws on the back housing and use your guitar pick or case opener to remove the bottom speaker assembly. Then use your guitar pick (I use my nail to avoid putting dents in the plastic) and go around the whole edges of the device. Doing this will release the clips. Now once you remove the back housing, remove all the ribbon connections from the mainboard. Then use your tool of choice to remove the antenna connections (these come off but simply pulling them up, do NOT twist them!) At the top right corner there is a black screw, remove that and you should be able to remove the main board. You should now see a pink square (the biggest one , that is the heatsink)
What to do next...
Simply find a heat sink similar to the big pink one that is already installed. Once you have that, simply cut it to size if needed and place over existing heat sink.
No hot screen ever since and I am on the MDK build and have been charging for an hour and max screen brightness. No heat issue

Yeah probably should have explained that more haha. Well if you take the mainboard out, you will see a pink square on the frame of the device (check your mainboard if it's still on the cpu. this may happen if the phone is hot) It will be the biggest heatsink of them all. Its hard to explain. Once I finish flashing this ROM, I'll take my phone apart and take a picture. and a video...

I too would like to see this video... +1 here
Thanks for sharing

Why is it still stuck on 66%!? Should I try to re upload

I'm not an engineer or anything, I was just curious if you know if the added heat sink actually diffuses the heat more effectively or simply insulates it from the screen, masking the problem so to speak. Have you run temperature readings on the internals during intense use after the mod?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

For those wondering... the heat sink is probably made of a thin sheet of special foam rubber like material.
I have used it before. It can be self adhesive and it feels cold to the touch from how fast it draws heat away.
Adding another layer adds to the thickness and will allow better contact, and it will increase the total mass of heat sink material meaning better heat transfer. It may add a little more stress to the main board though due to the added thickness taking up room.

Use pictures for each step and describe in detail what's being done in each step. I think this would be better than a video and easier to put together.

This should be moved to the general forum as this is not development work.
The risk reward for doing this is not worth tearing into a $600 device either. The ribbon connectors are extremely fragile and tear easily regardless of how tech savvy you may be.
But go ahead and pull out your screwdriver and tear into your phone if you really feel the need.

[Q] Camera App with Soft Flash Option?

Hey all, I need some help. I need a camera app or even a system tweak that will allow me to adjust the flash setting of the camera. Currently, we only have ON, OFF or AUTO. There should be an option for soft flash as well. I try taking pictures of my 5 month old niece and every photo I take of her, her eyes are closed because of the bright as hell flash we have on our phones. Any help would be appreciated.
Anyone know of any?

You do realize clear tape and/or thin white paper actually does work on cameras, right? No, you wouldn't know because your an ass and dismissed an idea without even asking questions.

Im not an ass, I just dont believe in sticking crap to my note when I'm sure there could be a software solution to the idea. NEXT!
Found this online....
HTC has an alternative API that supports this, however it's only on HTC Sense devices, and as of Gingerbread they've changed the permissions so it's only for their Flashlight app, not third party ones (unless you use root).
But on 2.2 HTC devices you can use it by writing a string to /sys/devices/platform/flashlight.0/leds/flashlight/brightness. This controls if the LED is on and how bright it is. For maximum brightness write "128\n", half brightness write "64\n". Easy to test from adb shell:
echo "128" > /sys/devices/platform/flashlight.0/leds/flashlight/brightness
And finally turn it off by writing "0\n" there.
Would Devs be able to use this info to create a system tweak to provide options for the flash intensity for the user?

The way you responded was pretty douchey, just saying. Especially since it's a valid idea. You could cut a tiny square of matte scotch tape to stick on the flash and you wouldn't even notice it on your phone.

Put a piece of thin tissue over the flash. This is an easy thing to do especially if you have a case on your device. Stop being a **** to people, atleast they are tryin to give you a solution to your problem. You should thank them not lash out at them.
You're right. I apologize to all that i have offended.
Now can we have a solution to this problem that doesn't require adhesive or paper or anything even close to this type of solution. Please, only software related solutions.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
In OP's defense; they did ask for software or app tweaks, not physical mods.
In defense of the other responders; using white plastic and/or cheap invisible tape IS a method used even by professional photogs to get that soft, dreamy glow. As mentioned in another post, if you have a case and are needing a semi-permanent solution, cut a small square out of a shopping bag. Use layers and different color bags to achieve the results that you're looking for.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
The best solution is to take the picture of your niece in the day time WITHOUT Flash. Problem solved. Pictures with flash have little quality compared to daytime captures IMO.
My gf hates that I keep closing my eyes when taking pictures with flash at night. I guess I will bring sunglasses with me at all times.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
Take pictures with out flash in lighted areas
then you can maybe use filters or a camera app that can give you different filters to enhance the brightness of the picture
in dark areas idk ....it is a bright flash and dont know of any apps/mods to dim the flash
and i wouldnt stick anything to my Note either
it hurts to have it in a case but i have to protect it lol

And that's why I responded the way I did before. I'm OCD about keeping my phone immaculate and sticking things to it makes me cringe.
Now there has to be a solution. I prefer taking pictures with flash indoors because if not, i notice the pics turn out pixelated. (in my home atleast)

Niece is only available for pictures at night and or in dark basements...?
Solution:
Just carry a halogen flashlight with you at all times, or a candle is good too but could burn if placed too close to skin
If the flashlight is too bright for her eyes you can cut a piece of tape and cover the lense..
Now is good and your note doesn't have any glue from tape.. Problem solved, Leave a "thanks" bellow please.

If I didn't know any better that looks exactly like what would happen if someone tried to haphazardly disassemble his Nexus 10 by trying to pry the glass out of the shell with a screwdriver. That isn't a defect.. That was done by a human.

You relish being an a-hole? You buy a 500 dollar tablet and you don't expect to have such things. I personally would call Google for a replacement unless the screen is perfect otherwise. My n10 repair came back with one of those marks after Samsung replaced the screen for dead pixels and the thing had awful flex and light bleed. They also managed to scratch up the back of it and i had to send it back in. If it bothers you get a replacement.

Manufacturers must love people like you, they get to make more mistakes with products, while the consumer doesn't care, thus keeping costs down
the fact is i also dont use a case as yet, mayb the defect was since day 1 but i never cared to notice it, untill i was putting on the bodyguardz screen protector

Here's a link to the thread I started... I had searched and searched, but couldn't find this... someone over there PM'd me this...
You can see my pics, mines exactly the same, but bottom right corner. And I know the plastic's never been picked at, never been out of it's case...
I think there must be batch of these that has this defect... it looks way to smooth and well fitting to be the result of post-production damage.
i would RMA this ASAP. definitely a manufacture defect.
After taking mine apart (trying to get at an ant)... I can tell you that it is definitely a defect (result of inadequate cooling during injection molding, maybe...) I can also tell you it probably does not affect the actual build reliability (quality is a different subjective measure that is an individual matter), due to how they are assembled.

- Rised corners
- battery issues
- not working usb , hdmi socket
- screen bleeding
- constant wifi drop
- constant restarts with stock rom
- speakers buzz
And any other unusual problems that are not in the specs
Its a product made by samsung supervised by google for god sake ... Should be a allmost flawless device with little devices with problems .
( Question : its that hard to pun a big battery and a small circuit board inside a solid case ? ) ipad and all the other tablets cost too much for a simple thing called material . software shoul cost more valuable because it is free and inteligence its there more than hardware ..
We all have problems here with this .. It s too much

[Q] screen not flush with metal

Let me start by saying I know am a bit ocd. The top of my screen is raised above the metal. Not a lot, but enough to notice every time I pull the notification bar down. Is this common with all of yours or a flaw with my unit in particular. I can feel the sharp edge of the glass when I pull down.

My screen is very slightly raised at the top, very very slightly, and at the bottom it is lower than the spkr grille by exactly as much as it is above it at the top. I consider it to be perfect.
I have it too, it's one of those things that's probably a defect but I like. When I take it out of my pocket it's handy to be able to tell which side is the top with my thumb as I take it out.
On a side note though: I've unlocked the BT and flashed a recovery/rooted, I take it there's no way for me to return it even if I wanted to?

Busted screen

I dropped my Note 2 right on the face and broke the glass. The top right corner looks like a spider web with a few cracks stretching to the bottom. The display still works though . I plan to get a new glass and replace it myself. I've found quite a bit of info on how to do it.
My only question is this. When I last made a call with it the screen wouldn't come back on when I pulled it away from my face. I'm hoping it's just because of the cracks that run right across the 2 sensors at the top. Do you think it could be that or do you think maybe one of the sensors broke when it fell.
I sure don't want to have to replace the whole lcd unit. That's about $250 while the glass is about $20.

I have a small crack in upper right of screen & now my sharp color is gone. It is now very dull almost like I used a photo app & added an overlay to it. Need some advice
Well I got my parts and got the tools I needed to fix my screen. The problem was I got the wrong type plastic razor blades. I got scraper blades instead. I tried it anyway and ended ripping my LCD screen. Now it's costed an extra $ 200+ for a LCD Digitizer assembly. Hopefully the next day delivery will still work even though yesterday was a holiday and the post offices were closed.
Anyway, what I'm leading up to is don't try this if everything isn't kosher. It's a tricky job.
Update: I found out they won't even ship it til Monday. I guess I don't get it back this weekend. I really don't like my old Charge after using my Note all these months.

All of them are made with the Sapphire coating. Made has suffered from one tiny scratch that only could be found under a bright fluorescent light. Not bad considering I wear the watch while exercising in gym sometimes making a light knock against the metal on the weight machines(Made a mark on the black paint).
IP67
This IP67 part of lies makes me most angry.
I'm kayaking a lot, and swim at swimming pool few times a week, and I had sooo many plans for TS+water (including app to count swim distance).
And this IP67 sold watch for me...
Yes, that "Sapphire" coating is a big help, I agree. I am glad we have it. It is not, however what we were sold, which was a sapphire crystal like the expensive watches use and which is really quite tough indeed (and quite more expensive, I am sure). We got a treated glass surface and given other assembly issues that have turned up I would not be too sure all the TrueSmarts shipped got an equally effective coating treatment.

I'm not because I bought a second TS for my uncle when they "confirmed" you could go swimming with it.... #nothappy
Actually I was thinking of immersing my TS into a load of this stuff!

This actually might work if it got into the "pores" and places inside the TS...
Passing through here, legit concerns as it relates to water resistant features... So let's keep on topic, OK?

I was actually being serious about getting the hydrophobic coating... We all know that the physical properties of the TS are useless soooo let's add some chemistry!
How abt dryzoo on indiegogo?

ip67 is just 30min under water so going to swim with it is a bad idea...

Why would it be a bad idea???
Swim for 30 minutes.
Or even better when you swim the watch will be going in and out of water so it should be good.
This is why for me all this IP rating is nonsense.

The TrueSmart watches are not at all waterproof. Many have been destroyed by casual splash damage like just getting wet while washing things in the kitchen sink. It's a shame, but don't get it wet.

Hehe...this thread is awesome..
My intention was to mock Omate and their IP rating circus

lol, just look at lokis immersion test where he sacrificed a TS!... And still Omate skirt round the issue... wonder if Loki got a refund for his factory sealed TS lol... All the waterproofing thing is doing is scaring people into not using their MicroSD Cards.... you're not going to loose any water protection because there isnt any to begin with...
inWatch offered to replace the Z if it gives me any issues from the test, Omate attacked my integrity upon seeing the video. So it's safe to assume a replacement is out of the question. Better QC and a couple of changes and the TS would probably hit 1ATM, a more serious evaluation of the design and they could have hit 3ATM.

I could do one video - water test -
My TS is somewhere on the shelf and I'm not using it (it's ridiculous to take it off evert time I'm washing my hands)..
I'm sure LLP would believe me
