im quite new to rooting and custom roms.
I have rooted (ALLINONE) my device with the S3 ToolKit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488)
My device had stock rom and was encrypted. I performed a factory reset from the stock rom (after a nandroid backup from the toolkit.
But the phone failed and booted into TWRP. When i try to wipe Dalvik Cache it sais failed..
I get "cannot mount internal storage" in the logs.
What sould i do?
I want to install the Paranoid Android ROM. But for now, whatever goes. Is there always an possibility to fix the phone as long as i get into the TWRP menu, or can it be permanently bricked now?

Could i try to install a ROM from a external card without wiping dalvik? I was able to wipe "cache", but not factory reset or dalvik. havent tried anything else yet.
To my knowledge, you can only access encrypted data with the instance of the ROM you encrypted it with.
I would expect you'd have to decrypt fully before wiping and flashing.
I may be wrong but there is a chance there's nothing you can do to get the data back :/
Everything possibly needs to be formatted.
I just took "format data" - it worked just to confirm i was on the right track, i tried dalvik again - it worked! OH YES. going forward
Whatever doesnt kill your phone makes you stronger, or something But what should i do now..?

I want to flash the Paranoid Android ROM.
I have downloaded the ROM + gapps from as stated in this link: (remote the [DOT] and replace it with a real dot) tothemobile[DOT]com/install-paranoidandroid-4-2-2-jelly-bean-custom-rom-on-galaxy-s3
but im not sure what steps i should do now. The toolkit dosnt have a feature covering my situation as far as i can see (a formatted phone), since the toolkit want me to boot it as normal to start the flash procedure - if i havent misunderstood this totally

You don't really need the toolkit. Plus, it's really good to learn how to do things manually, in case you get in situations like this.
Sol exactly what state is the phone in?
What recovery has the phone got?
Does the phone now boot?
Is it wiped and internal storage works?

Im not sure how i can describe the phones state more than i have now used "format data" in the TWRP recovery screen, the device is listing in the toolkit and im able to go into download mode. I dont have an external card for the phone now, but if its critical for the ongoing progress, ill get a hold of one.

Have a read of the "sticky roll-up thread" in general where there are guides for flashing etc
im not familiar with twrp. usually android sees /extSdCard as your removable sd. But recoveries usually use external_sd for the same location.
Essentially you put the zip on your sd and install via recovery. Have a look through those guides. I cant really help withy your recovery though as i dont know it.
I believe that the case is resloved!
To users experiencing that wipes/factory reset fails on a device that have/had encrypted data, you must "format data" and then mount a SD card with the desired ROM and gapps. If you dont have the option of a external SD - i dont know what you have to do - but im sure the internet do

I'm not a typical android user and this was one of my firsts in messing around with my Tab 10.1. I have GTP7500 which I recently loaded up with CM10 and it's working fine except for the camera. Leave that and what I was going to say is that I'd like to remove my entire Internal Storage ( all the downloads, music, videos ) and stuff, i.e, like formatting the sd card. I'd like to know a way to format the internal storage of my Tab without affecting the system files as I don't want to create any troubles here. So, my questions are:-
1. Whether I can delete all the stuff shown inside the internal storage from my PC directly and would it affect the system? I cannot see any format option when I connect my tab to my PC so, I was hoping if I could manually delete all the files inside the storage and then doing a factory reset from cwm and installing the rom once again?
2. Or is there any app to do this?
3. Or if it is quite simple to do it the hard way, well, entering the fastboot and wiping the whole system (Read it somewhere before) and installing all the stuff again, then please do tell me that too. Otherwise, I'd go with the easy method, i.e, just format the internal storage.
Also, what about the format /sdcard option in the mounts and storages menu in CWM? I'm using CWM 5.5.0.4.
I think doing the "format /sdcard" in CWM should do what you are looking for as I have done that in the past. I would also temporarily back up the /sdcard contents onto your computer as a precaution in case an app was depending on any folders there, but I think it should be fine.

Thanks for the quick reply. But would it remove other stuff including the boot files and other core files of Android? I've somewhere seen similar posts and whom did the format /sdcard but they proclaimed they lost whole files and had to do bootloader and install cwm and other stuff all over again to gain access. I've already managed to do format the sd card while installing the ICS official ROM for my tab but I did that via Samsung's recovery menu, i.e, one you get when installing their official ROMs and did a factory reset which erased all my internal storage files. But the same option won't remove internal storage in cwm. So, is format /sdcard the option to do this? I'd be glad to get a clear answer.

Yep, format sdcard in CWM. It will only wipe the data stored there. Your bootloaders and ROM will remain unaffected, however I would still backup the sdcard to your computer before doing this just in case.

The method above does work. However, if you really want to wipe the whole device completely clean, using Odin to flash stock firmware will blow it all out and make you factory-fresh in one operation.
So I flashed the latest nightly 9-2-02 and I kept on getting the error in my camera app external device storage needed. I figured the problem was not with my sdcard, but with my internal sdcard folder. When I go to flash via recovery, it says e:/unable to mount internal sd card. Is there anyway to remount this card?
I have Hboot 1.15, s-on. I know some other people have been having this problem, anybody have any ideas?

it may some how have gotten corrupted. update twrp to the latest if you dont have it (2.2.2) and then boot into recovery and do a back up, go to advanced and install htc dumlock and reboot, i dont personally like dumlock but it is the most flexible solution barring a few extra steps, go into apps and launch dumlock, here it will write recovery to boot and then reboot directly into twrp because you technically no longer have a boot, it has been replaced by twrp, then go to advanced again and restore boot and go back to menu, go to wipe select internal, this will reformat it, then do the usual factory reset, wipe cache, dalvik, system and then flash cm10, gapps, and reboot, if all goes well you can go ahead and flash any extras you might have had prior
note: with dumlock there is no need to fastboot the kernel, with dumlock in boot it can write directly, the reason this method isnt the most ideal is that you are writing to boot multiple times but like i said i think it is the most flexible for newer users

Thank you for this explanation, but I believe (thanks to a user from the CM10 thread) that it is indeed corrupted like you said. But instead of going through that, I went and mounted my internal drive via TWRP to my computer. So I have a macosx (ugh) and I reformatted it, but it had trouble doing it and it didn't work properly. Normally in windows it would do a much better job as you are able to set it FAT32 etc etc. So when my phone started up, the phone recognized it was a corrupted drive and repaired it itself, and voila, everything is working, I am able to side load apps and actually download things.
well i wrote those directions to give you the best chance at getting it to work, I always prefer a fresh start when possible. my instruction is also non reliant on a computer which to me is also a plus as windows/mac/and linux can interfere with usb. Glad to hear you got it working
Formatting work
I would like to thank everyone who posted, I rebooted my EVO to TWRP recovery, mounted the USB drive and connected to my windows PC. The USB drive popped up and windows asked if I wanted to fix it, I said yes and formatted as fat32 adn after unmounting and rebooting, the sdcard mounted perfectly!

My kids have two NT's. With two 16GB Sdcards, one class4 the other class 10. I know class4 is recommended, but one poster in forums said he's taken images of CM built on class4's and applied this image to class 10's in several cases and has had no problems. So I thought what the heck, can't hurt to try, so that's what I did (using Winimage). It booted fine 5 or 6 times for me, and I installed several APK's of games from Humble Bundle . I turned over the Nook to my little girl and she brought it back to me later showing she gets errors on boot, after swiping the lock symbol to unlock it. One is "Unfortunately, Talk has stopped". If you click OK on this, you get ""Unfortunately, Trebuchet has stopped". Clicking OK on this does nothing, it keeps popping up indefinitely. I don't know if the sdcard is hot pluggable (can be removed with power to the tablet), but she did admit to doing this. So I'm wondering if some corruption occurred to the CM build on the sdcard. Has anyone seen these errors? I could reflash it from the image I made off the class 4, but want to understand what happened so we don't run into it again. The funny thing is, I don't recall the startup wizard off the 1st class4 card prompting me with several screens regarding Google crap like it did on the 2nd card which was flashed from the same image. That was even after telling it I had no Google acct hoping it would leave me alone.

Yes,
internal boot - boots Rom in emmc
Internal recovery - recovery in emmc
Sdcard boot - boots your sdcard Rom.
Sdcard recovery - boots sd card recovery ( keep recovery.img in root of sdcard for it to load recovery)
Sdcard altboot - alternate recovery ( not necessary, unless you want both cwm and twrp at same time)
Fastboot - fastboot mode , fastboot commands to flash .img file etc with this method .
As for your problem, try entering recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache partition (I've done this on emmc version, never tried sdcard version of any Rom) this may solve the issue. If not try factory reset.
And removing sdcard while device is switched on is called hot swapping , hot plug is a CPU governor. Not sure if sdcard roms are hot swappable, but I think not.

And please, I want to be very, very careful not to wipe out the B&N stock OS, so please, any detailed instructions you can give so I don't make that mistake, I'd greatly appreciate it. (I see so many posts on these forums about people bricking their Nook tablets it worries me.)

Um I don't know much about how it works for sdcard Rom. I've always only used emmc version. I guess if you were to enter recovery, it would access the stock cache partition by default , and we aren't trying to clear that.
Try this - use titanium backup (only talking about your sdcard Rom here, nothing to do with your stock) and in options, you may be able to wipe your cache or dalvik cache.
Or,
boot into your sdcard Rom, in settings > backup and restore > factory reset. This will delete all user data and return Rom to original Cm10 that you flashed on sdcard.
Or if it's only google talk and trebuchet launcher issue, install a new launcher (go launcher, adw etc) , then use titanium backup to uninstall trebuchet and talk.

From what I see, titanium backup is an android app. If I can't boot to Android (Trebuchet error loops as I said) I don't know how I can install this to do anything? Nor can I install another launcher or go into Settings as the error doesn't let you get any further.

In cwm, enter mounts and backup, then (if) you see /sdcard /cache, mount that and format that ONLY.
Do not format anything else as some options can brick device (Rom, bootdata, factory etc)
Wiping cache is safe (99%)
Again, I have never used sdcard Rom so I don't know what will show up in your recovery. But if you see something like sdcard cache, it can be cleared. If it doesn't specify sdcard, let us assume it refers to stock emmc.

Select SDC Recovery on the Cyanoboot boot menu -- see steps 7 & 8 of the post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2061536.

I chose sd recovery, chose Backup & Restore, then Backup. It started running right away. It said:
SD Card space free: 228MB

I plug sdcard into PC card reader and the FAT partition has 0 bytes free. So, appears it ran out of space. I saw your comment about 600MB space being needed. So I'm redoing the partitions now.

Why backing up now when it's not working? Fix your issue, then make a backup. So the next time there's a problem you can restore to working condition.

Well, backing up, I think, was a good suggestion by Digimax. So I'm glad I did it. and now i know how to do it for future. Just in case anything EVER goes wrong, I'll always have that image now on my pc. Bad thing was, apparently B&N nook OS apparently keeps lots of APKs around after installing them. I had to make my 1st fat32 partition over 2GB for the entire backup to process without running out of space. backup size=1.6gb
I ran into lost chains - convert to cluster msgs trying to delete the folder of the first failed backup, but it never would delete even after a chkdsk, so I formatted the card and put the original image back onto it, adjusted the partitions, and then ran into a new probem.....the Cyanomod spinning logo never stopping spinning so it won't boot up. So I give up. I don't know if it's that it's a class 10 card that all these problems are happening. barring any other suggestions, I guess I'll make sure the other NT we have runs stable for a few weeks and if so I'll order another class 4 like that one has.

I don't know about your bootloop issue, but I don't think it's a sdcard class issue.
Anyhow, now that you have stock backup, aren't you going to consider flashing cm10 internally? Do you actually use stock?

I'm a little leery of it, at least while it's under warranty. I don't know how reliable recovery is.? Besides, my daughter wasn't thrilled with it being down for several days with me fussing with it and asked if she could have her "B&N boot" back I admit It is a bit of a pain having to pull it out of it's case, lift the flap, pop-in or out the sdcard to switch between them. (& also to have to remember to always turn it off b4 removing/inserting)

FWIW, you don't have to actually remove the card to boot into stock. Just reboot, hold "n" to get into Cyaonoboot menu and choos "int boot" or something like that, and it will boot to stock with the sd-card still inserted.

I think many of these symptoms could have been caused by a dying card. It did have a corruption error once, and then it finally completely died. Just for anyone else that runs into these.

FWIW, /cache does not need to be backed up, which should help reduce the backup space requirement.
I am a complete noob and got my lesson for messing up with my phone. I have an already rooted SGH i777 and was trying to flash OMNI Rom for 4.4. I wiped emmc by mistake. Although I did back my stuff up, they are no where to be found.I get cannot mount SD card error through CWM v6. I read somewhere that this is resultant of having no operating system in my phone anymore.
My phone is not recognised by computer. But I can access an external microSD card while booting recovery using CWM. Please help me as I am completely lost without my phone. You patience is deeply appreciated.

If that's the case, you should be able to put a rom on the micro SD card and simply flash it in recovery. You may have lost your backups, but if you can flash a rom via the SD card you ought to be fine.

I'm not clear what you mean by "I wiped EMMC." Can you please describe exactly what you did, and describe the options you used if it was through recovery, which I assume it would have been.
If you put the phone into download mode while Odin3 is open on the desktop, does Odin3 recognize the phone?
FYI: TWRP file browser sees internal memory as "emmc". From the advanced wipe menu of TWRP, exists the option to wipe internal memory.
edit: really annoyed that I am limited to eight thanks at a PC, which has a much more comfortable interface than the XDA app, where I have unlimited thanks to offer my peers.

I went to CWM based recovery mode and wiped data/factory reset and wipe cache partition and in advanced wipe dalvik cache.( I did not run any wipe script as mentioned in this forum. I would have avoided all this if i actually paid attention and read the correct way of flashing here.)
I then went on to mounts and storage and did format/cache , system, data and preload. But also format /emmc
After that no ROM could be flashed and I could not access any recoveries. I realised my error when I saw the log that No files are found and couldnt open directory.
Update :
My phone is not recognized by Odin v1.85 and I also put a SAMSUNG_UCLE5.zip for SGHi777 given by a friend on to a microSD card and tried flashing that ROM from external microSD.
The log says:
I:Can't partition unsafe device: /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
I tried to partition just to see if it works. This time the log says
I:Can't format unknown volume :/external_sd. I never had an external sd card, but I gather that the system was partitioned in such a way that one chunk is considered external_sd.
Odin doesnt recognise it in download mode. I tried every USB port, changed data cables, tried different drivers available on Samsung website.
Please tell me I didn't ruin my phone. Any help is deeply appreciated.

After that no ROM could be flashed and I could not access any recoveries. I realised my error when I saw the log that No files are found and couldnt open directory.
Update :
My phone is not recognized by Odin v1.85 and I also put a SAMSUNG_UCLE5.zip for SGHi777 given by a friend on to a microSD card and tried flashing that ROM from external microSD.
The log says:
I:Can't partition unsafe device: /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
I tried to partition just to see if it works. This time the log says
I:Can't format unknown volume :/external_sd. I never had an external sd card, but I gather that the system was partitioned in such a way that one chunk is considered external_sd.
Odin doesnt recognise it in download mode. I tried every USB port, changed data cables, tried different drivers available on Samsung website.
Please tell me I didn't ruin my phone. Any help is deeply appreciated.

This is beyond my level of understanding. I'm not sure what block 1p1 is. All of the partitions are designated as 0px where x is a number 1-15~.
I assume you've tried all the variables to get Odin to recognize the phone in download mode. Since Odin doesn't recognize download mode, I don't know of anything else to do but send it to someone with jtag equipement. It'll cost you maybe 40 or 50 bucks, but at least you can get your phone back. The person most trusted in the forums here for this sort of repair is Josh at Mobile Tech Videos.
Hi, I'm fairly new to XDA, flashing custom roms and rooting, but I'm really desperate right now.
I know many people probably already have had the same issue, but after searching all over the internet i didn't find my exact problem.
I used Nitrogen OS on my Pocofone F1, but after 1 Month of usage I wanted to try MIUI again, an important thing I remember is that i flashed a new kernel,
but I don't know if that makes any difference.
I made a backup of MIUI without any data on it (i made a hard reset before, so nothing would go wrong) and then installed Nitrogen OS the correct way (i wiped dalvik, data, ...) and everything, even installed the decrypter and everything worked fine.
Now I deleted dalvik, data, cache, ... and loaded the Backup of MIUI and as soon as I booted I suddenly got a bootup password, even though i should get nothing at all because it's basically a clean install.
I tried the normal password that i used all the time, but it didn't work, so i decided to get back to twrp.
Now i got a decryption password, that i don't know and the internal memory is 0 bytes large.
I loaded the nitrogen os backup that i also made, but it didn't work.
I read on other forums, that i should format my internal memory and try to flash the disable-force-encryption again, but i don't really know what to do exactly. i know how to format the memory, it's on the bottom when you want to delete data, dalvik, cache,... but still... .
Even if my phone is briked now, can anyone help me? I really don't know what to do

First of all your phone isn't bricked. It's going to be ok.
The bad thing is that you will lose your internal storage.
The procedure to format data is :
(While in twrp) "mount"-> check "data"-> "repair change file system" -> format your data partition.
After that, no password will be asked. Now wipe system davlik cache and data and reboot into recovery again.
If you have sd card installed start flashing. If you don't, you need to plug into a pc and copy what you need inside your internal storage.

Yes. That's the solution. After that your device will get encrypted again on reboot, unless you flash encryption disabler. I would suggest keeping the encryption and not flashing anything more

i still got a little problem tough, if i try to flash a rom (i tried nitrogen os and lineage os), i get error 7, what can i do about it? my phone always boots into fastboot now, but i am still able to enter twrp

The error 7 occurs due to outdated vendor/firmware. Download latest firmware and flash it before the rom you want (for example if you want to clean flash a rom: wipe system, davlik, cache, data.. flash firmware.. flash rom [you won't get error 7].. flash gapps.. reboot)
