Ad hoc wifi not working - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I'm at my summer house right now and have no router here. Laptop has a mobile broadband adapter with no bandwidth limit. Therefor I would like to share that connection to my S3 to save data on my phones plan.
Problem: S3 cannot see the wifi network regardless of security or ssid. I have done this hundreds of times with this computer and other phones (O2X and iPhone 4S). I really don't understand what's wrong...
Windows 7 on the computer and stock rooted rom on the phone.
Please help me from having to pay for unnecessary bandwidth

Will try!
It's a pro feature to share mobile. I don't feel like paying to share what I'm already paying for.

Connectify
I'm using Connectify, but I have some problems with it. It often drops Wi-Fi connection on phone side. The only solution is to restart hotspot on computer. Kinda sucks when dealing with larger files. Are there any similar alternatives?

Weird, I used connectify to share my 3g broadband but it was ~2 years ago so thigs may have changed since then...
And after googling around I found out that inablity to see ad-hoc networks is an android "limitation".
I remember using ad-hoc networks back in day with gingerbread though and it was a mod back then too, not sure if there is mods for newer android versions to access ad-hoc networks.

[Q] Wi-fi emulator

Is there some sort of wi-fi emulator out there? Amazon app of the day won't let me download some of the apps, but 4G is twice as fast as my wi-fi connection at home.
Hello, and welcome to XDA
I would love to help answer your question, however your post is somewhat ambiguous.
If you could, please indicate in more detail what the particular problem is.
I am going to take a leap here and assume that your problem is that wireless tether sets up an ad-hoc network instead of a regular wifi network.
however if this is not the case, then please let me know. I will do the best I can to help you.
Hmm I was wondering the same thing. His problem isn't anything to do with teather. It's that Amazon will have free apps that say they require a WiFi connection on phone to download do to there size.
If your in an area where you can't connect to a WiFi network Amazon will not let you download. Even if your on 4g for some reason the server will only allow a WiFi connected phone to download which really sucks.
So he wants to be on his 4g connection but fool Amazon's server into thinking he is connected via WiFi

I was annoyed at the same thing. If someone finds a solution, I'd be interested in hearing it.

To the op.. this is what your post should have looked like
Is this using the Amazon market place? If so.. can u just visit the regular site and skip the app for those particular apps.

Yeah this is for the Amazon Market. Main problem is that Amazon only allows certain apps to be downloaded over wifi. It sucks and as of yet there is no workaround that I know of. I'm sure some form of proxying would work but that's just as much of a pain as doing any kind of workaround. Amazon just needs to remove this limitation as a whole. I mean really where's the benefit for them to have you use your wifi connection vs your mobile connection.
you trying to get monopoly?
haha me too...
Removed my "annoyed" message. lol .. ignore this.

I just grabbed that using 4g, but I've had that wifi issue before.
EDIT: I guess I didn't get it with 4g. It looked like it had downloaded and said update but then I saw it was hung up and it started after I switched to wifi.
Quite silly at this point, they could just give you the large data download warning that I believe the Market gives you.
If they hear from enough people I would bet they would change it. They started a packing feedback after I returned a hdd 3 times and bought somewhere else due to poor packing. I'm sure they had many complaints.

USB Wired Tether?

Is there one that works for the Rezound? This was last updated in 2010...
http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/
...so I don't think that would. Anyone know of another one that has the same design as the newest Wifi Tether, but it's USB?
PDANet works fine with it.
Have you tried clockworkmod tether?

Lite version stays free but blocks https. That's pretty much industry standard.
Blocks https ? How is that industry standard, maybe amongst the tether app devs but not real world

You answered your own question. This limitation is pretty much standard amongst all the free apps.

how would you do wired tethering to a tablet? foxfi is only needed for wireless i belive. if you want to do wireless tethering just get wifi tether. works great
I am trying easy tether lite.
Basically its connected to PC and app is working, it works on websites. However things like ssh connections dont appear to even try to use the connection they still go over my wired broadband connection. According to the FAQ only UDP is blocked, so I have emailed the author to see if its a true internet sharing app or just for web.
After a bit of research, I have found the following methods for full, free USB tethering with no limitations and for free USB reverse tethering:
I found this app for USB tether. It is entirely free and allows https and all. It took me a bit of time to figure out how to make it work: I did it by going to Chrome Settings > Advanced settings > Proxy settings > LAN settings > Use proxy server for LAN; Adress: localhost; Port: 8080.
Then I started the connection from the app, also set to port 8080. Although Windows never recognized any internet connection, it worked in Chrome.
To switch back to my DSL internet or Wi-Fi, I had to disable the proxy again.
For the reverse tether, I found this Windows tool. It allows reverse tethering with nothing installed on the phone (although root is needed). The only problem with it is that the Play Store is unable to download over its connection, but one can always go to play.google.com in the phone's browser and download things from there.
easy tether does actually work on everything, I paid for it now.
I got no idea if any free apps that have full tethering. CM7 rom supposedbly has it but for some reason the option isnt on my phone's version of CM7.

Tether Phone from Computer

Hello all. I was wondering if I could share my computers internet with my phone. My computers hooked up with ethernet so it would be nice if I could share that connection with my Note. Thank you.
Depends, there's tethering and there's reverse tethering...
To connect to the internet on PC using the phone's cell towers, I use EasyTether
I mean reverse tethering, I tried an app and it didnt work and I tried setting up an ad hoc connection and that didnt work either
This is what I found to work best...

Can i create a broadband connection ?

Good Evening and Merry Christmas to you ALL
I Have something that have been going in my mind for a while ... iam using SGS3 ( International version ) Updated to JellyBean
The thing that i want t know is am i able to create a brodaband connection\PPPoE through Wi-Fi ? and if so , how ?
Sorry if the thread is repeated , and again Merry Christmas :fingers-crossed:
NO REPLY ? :crying:
Not sure but i know you can use your phone to tether to your pc.. So your pc would be using your phones 3g connection
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
As above. There's an option in more settings beneath bluetooth to provide wifi hotspot using your phone's network connection. Set that up, and connect your pc to the hotspot.
It would only give you the speed you can get on your phone though. No broadband connection but usable.

Three tethering block

I can't use ttorrent, utorrent or any other android torrent client because three thinks I'm tethering when I use it. Tried using orbot to proxy it but it just freezes on my optimus 4x. Anyone know how I can get round this? I have unlimited data to abuse!

Sorry about digging up an older thread, but I'm up against the same problem, how to get around the three network tethering ban even though I'm only torrenting not tethering? Any ideas anyone?

To my understanding they use packet sniffers to determine whether you are tethering, the type of connection torrents use must be in their blacklist. Not sure if there's any way round it

Strangely enough I can tether my iPod to my phone with no problems, but it won't let me download stuff, go figure.
