I still have stock recovery. should I assume it's not unlocked? and if so. how do I go about unlocking it if I'm already rooted?

Help - Recovery not working and me no smart

I am very new to this and did something as my friend said, really stupid. I rooted my Evo LTE with the one click root method. This installed TWRP Recovery. After a few days I found a ROM I wanted to install. I installed ROM manager and along with this it installed Clockworkmod. I tried to install the rom from the zip I put on the root but clockwork opens up as my recovery instead of TWRP and does not run any commands. So after trying to get clockwordmod to work and couldn't... I decided to unroot phone and just re-root (yes very stupid). So after unrooting via SuperUser, I tried to install the RUU and it would'nt install as bootloader/recovery not work. I have no clue what to do
Are you running the ruu on your pc? It's not something you flash on your phone.

I've been trying that and it keeps failing...
You have to relock your bootloader to run an ruu.

Try to flash TWRP again. If your able to do this then running a ruu is not nessary. As stated before clockworkmod recovery has problems on the Evo LTE.

Thank you thank you, I was able to relock the bootloader last night. Tonight I will try and reflash TWRP. This has been a good learning experience so far. At least i didn't brick the phone As the phone is no longer rooted do i need to root it as part of my flashing TWRP? The one click root method installs TWRP as part of the whole process.

You do not need to be rooted to flash a recovery but your bootloader needs to be unlocked. If your unlocking your bootloader using htcdev method then you don't need to be rooted. If your unlocking your bootloader using lazypanda method then you need root or temp root before you can run lazypanda.

Can't root after relock and unroot

Has anyone else ever done this and can't reroot? Regaw method doesn't work either. No root method seems to work.

Is your bootloader unlocked? If you're running into trouble unlocking using regawmod method, try going to HTC dev site and doing the unlock bootloader process that way manually. I was running into the same thing until yesterday when I did that method. If you get unlock, just install twrp recovery using goomanager app (settings, then run/install openscript) and then flash supersu

Go here and click on select your device then go to All other supported models follow the instructions and you'll have an unlocked bootloader. Then you have to flash twrp recovery, and after that flash the rom of your choice

Yeah I eventually got it. Regawmod wouldn't reboot the phone into bootloader although it said it did. I manually put it in to bootloader,
then it would continue, only to stop at installing root. I copied the root file to sd, then went into recovery and installed that way.
PITA!

I have bricked my phone trying to install a Rom. The phone is rooted. I tried to flash the older 1.43 boot image. Fastboot showed that it was completed. I restarted and nothing happened. I then tried to flash my backup in twrp. For some reason, the backup did not work. I can still get into HBOOT/FASTBOOT and my recovery.
Is there a way to install a factory image/rom through fastboot?
Or can I install a stock image from my ext sdcard? If so, any have the files?

Did you try to flash the boot.img again? It could just have been a bad flash. Also, did you check the MD5 sum when you downloaded the old boot.img to verify it wasn't corrupted?
Failing that, you could re-lock your bootloader and flash the RUU listed somewhere in the Development forum.

You can try to install another ROM. It may or may not run. If it doesn't, I would re-lock my bootloader, install the new RUU, and go through the root process again. Painful as it may be, it would be my choice.
Better than a $600 dollar paper weight door jam :/ can you fastboot roms like how you can fast boot kernels and radios?

How do I re-lock my bootloader in install the new RUU? Is the a tool in the DEV section for that?
I believe you have to relock thru the htc dev site.

I believe it's an adb command you just type relock bootloader. I could be wrong but I know it's something like that.

fastboot oem lock is the command

Firmware and boot loader ?'s

OK so I used the bootloader to flash the 3 option in Haus's thread and every thing is working. But....
Now on the bootloader screen it says locked tampered then S-off.
I was told the locked was just wat it was saying and didn't matter.
So do I have a locked boot loader? And does that even matter for anything or was it just required to get root plus S-off?
Did I mess up getting the newest hboot from the firmware? I was told I needed it to run meanbean.

I'm not sure what u flashed but it sounds like you flashed the whole thing which means you have stock recovery now. Either fastboot flash recovery image or download thru goo manager.
Once you have a custom recovery installed your all set. Don't worry about the locked on your bootloader

You should have flashed the first file the one with no kernel, hboot, or stock recovery that would have updated everything you needed to be updated
So did I mess anything up? I was able to flash mean bean without any issues.

No you just did the same as taking the OTA as far as I can tell. As long as everything is working you should be fine

Root without unlocking bootloader??

Can I just root my phone without unlocking the bootloader? If so, how do I go about doing that?
Thanks.
Not perm root. You have to flash a custom recovery to flash the root package. I believe you can temp root however.

S off maybe? Since on s off you need to be locked and dont need to use htcdev and after you can change the dirtyracun logo to locked again

Yes. Use the DirtyRacun tool for the Dinc4G at unlimited.io. Be sure to follow the directions *exactly*. This process does not unlock the bootloader.
Somebody tell me what "unlock the bootloader" means. I only know about s-on and S-off.

Unlock bootloader is for flashing roms and kernels, without significant changes to the phone itself, s off gives you full acces to the phone, soffed you can flash radios bootimages bootloaders, and manipulate everything, also meaning a risk of completely bricking

Worth it, but be careful.

ok - just wanted to make sure i was following correctly.
s-off is a step past simply unlocking the bootloader. doing either will allow you to flash roms / kernels / custom recovery? s-off will also make it a bit easier to brick your phone if you don't follow directions.
i rooted my original inc... s-off seemed to be the way to go on that phone which i did with no problems... maybe that made me braver than i should be
S-off is the way to go. Just stick with ROMs/kernels/radios for this phone. Flashing files for other phones will usually brick your phone.
