[Q] Fully restore a rooted S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know the answer is here somewhere but I really need someone to guide me...
I bought a Galaxy S3 yesterday and it´s not my first. It came with WanamLite. I know that WanamLite is a good ROM but the phone was laggy as syrup... Last night I flashed the latest leaked 4.2.2 Samsung firmware but I really feel it´s still laggy... as soon as I do two different things in ot it lags like he**.
Now I wanna try to restore EVERYTHING to it´s factory state... kernel, firmware... EVERYTHING! I want to be able to update this phone the usual way... either KIES or OTA. As of now I just get a message that the firmware has been changed and that the phone is not supported.
So... can someone please give me directions to fully restore the phone to it´s original state?
Thanx guys!

first go to recovery and do a wipe data/factory reset and cache and on advanced wipe dalvik cache then go to mounts and storage and format everything there
then go to download mode and flash a stock Rom

So if I do that the custom recovery, root and Everything else will be as "out of the box"?
Isnt it best to use ODIN to flash Stock ROM?

Usually Stock Rom has stock recovery in it.
So if u flash with a stock rom
Then everything will be back to normal.
It is optional to use Triangle Away.
Use it only if u need to rest ur binary count

yes everything will be deleted and back to stock but your binary counter will not be back to 0 for that you will need triangle away for waranty purposes which is useless since you bought your phone second hand
yes odin is the best choice but you need to go to download mode so odin can idintify your phone you can't flash a Rom on home screen LOL

Run triangle away
Flash your stock Rom
Factory reset

Think its the easiest and best way to get back to stock..
-) Check out the latest Firmware for your region on sammobile.com,
-) backup your data / SMS etc if you would,
-) reset the counter with triangle away,
-) flash the downloaded Firmware with Odin and last do a factory reset

Yeah. Just check the flash counter in download mode first. Bootloaders since 4.1.1 have been increasing back to 1 after reboot so you need to be on a stock recovery and kernel to reset without going back to 1 .
Or you have to prevent triangle away from rebooting after the reset. Pull the battery and go straight to download mode

Everything Went fine... counter restored, and Stock flashed.
First I was worried that the phone had gotten the "Sudden Death" due to the constant freezing... AND it has the stupid chip that causes the darn thing... but after a reset of the phone it works just fine!
Thanx alot guys! I´ll hit the "Thank You"-button!

[Q] Need to Revert from ICS to GB, need clear answer please!

Hi Guys
I flashed the leaked ICS but hate it. Can I flash to stock GB via Odin? What about the baseband versions etc.., would it matter?
Sorry, I read another thread but it's unclear and I want to avoid bricking. Thanks
As far as what I've read you can flash stock from Odin or even use CWM to a previous nandroid of gingerbread.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
If you got your Note from AT&T, simply flash this stock ODIN:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
I went from ICS back to Gb cause I missed the tethering and it was easy. Just make sure you clear the caches and all should be well.
Thanks.. I was worried of the different baseband would have any adverse effect, but it doesn't sound like it will. I'll give it a try.
I Odin'd back to stock and I'm in a world of ****. My phone cant do anything, it just gets stuck on every swipe and reboots about every 5 minutes. Does anyone have any ideas?
Mines fine..only baseband is different, phone works.
Before I Odin to stock, I booted into recovery, factory reset and wiped cache. Odin, then booted into recovery and performed another factory reset and wiped cache again.

figured it out. My post is below.

You get it figured out? I did the same thing. . My old apps still there. I can tell it is gingerbread, but nothing works now. I hope you got your figured out!!
When I boot into recovery I get the screen that tells me to use the up and down keys and when I choose factory wipe, and press power button, nothing happebs. If I hold it down eventually the phone shuts off. When i restart it, nothing changed.

I had to revert from ICS to GB yesterday and, even tho I am on Telus, I had success by flashing the pda-odin-att-stock.rar image
I can't post links .. I'm too new. But literally.. google what's bolded above and you will find the hotfile link.
It replaced everything (including the recovery) ... FULL system image. Solved everything and brought me back to 100% stock.
So yes, I lost my root and my CWM recovery software.. but it got my phone working again.. I can reflash CWM and re-root as I need.
After the install, wipe cache, factory reset etc.
I too flashed the stock ATT rom but like the previous poster, it gave me a phone which started up but wouldn't work. When I tried to get into recovery mode, it went to a screen with the recovery mode stuff at the top, but with a yellow warning sign in the middle and some words about manual mode, and it would not let me do a wipe or reset.
Here is what I just did that did work.
I flashed the recovery-i717-cwm-b4.tar file with odin. This worked and allowed me to get into the "proper" recovery mode to do a wipe and factory reset, as well as a cache wipe. I then reflashed tieh the stock ATT rom, and my phone now is back to stock.

unrooting question

where do i get the original recovery to flash???
so i flash it in clockwork recovery, and when phone reboots it is back to OEM????
what i mean is the stock GS3 software.. when i am in clockwork recovery, i wipe the system and i flash the stock software, where do i download it from?? thanks..
So you don't want to unroot you just want to use the stock rom?

see if this helps. i know when i had to unroot it worked and kept all my data but if you are taking it back to the store for warranty you may want to try the app called "triangle away". the app makes it so they cannot tell if you have flashed any ROMs.
check out the development section for how to go back to stock. once i got it back up and running..i also went to settings, privacy to do a system reset as i didnt want them to see superuser app when i took my phone in to the store.
I am still running the stock Rom, I just rooted the phone and flashed clockwork recovery.. I'm trying to do a factory data reset. To reset the phone back to the out of box state. I am under the assumption that when a phone is rooted and a custom recovery is flashed you can not just go into settings and factory reset your phone or you will brick it. Am I correct in this assumption? And if I am corect what I think I have to do is flash the original recovery, then I can reset the phone to factory settings which will wipe it back to stock and remove the root.. correct? I am just not sure where to get the factory recovery. Doesn't clockwork recovery replace the factory recovery?
Yes factory reset after having cwma will not restore back to stock. You''ll have to flash stock via computer or mobile Odin. The link provided above should be helpful
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
If you just want to unroot - removing Superuser.apk, su and busybox works.
CWM will stay though.
Then do factory reset and format internal sdcard. That will remove all user data.
So.. if you have clockwork recovery, and you factory reset the phone, it will put the factory recovery back?
I thought trying to reset while having a recovery flashed would lock up the phone...

If your still having trouble here, the answer this question & alot of others is at galaxys3root.com. It's one of Zedomax's sites that will give you clearly labeled & very easy to follow instructions to unroot for warranty return. He also includes a video where he will walk you step by step through the process. This is a great Site & you can find some great tutorials on the gs3, as well as rom reviews, so be sure to bookmark it! I hope I've helped
no no, i dont want to just follow instructions.. i am trying to understand CWM. i know how to use it, but every phone i ever rooted i was never able to reset back to factory settings because i was never sure if it would screw my phone up and i am trying to learn if it is safe t do. Does CWM replace the factory hboot or just install along with it? if i am rooted and i have CWM flashed, can i still reset to factory settings like normal? and if i do what will happen? will i still have root and CWM?? can i reset back to factory in ANY rom i flash safely? all that resetting back to factory does is remove accounts and .data files correct?? when you do a wipe in CWM it removes the entire OS, then you flash whatever rom you want.. when you reflash the factory ROM, unroot and remove CWM, hboot is still there correct? you dont have to reinstall hboot, right? you just have to make sure you reflashed the original ROM and uninstall root and CWM and then your back to original right?? i am just trying to understand it all thats all.. i know i can follow directions, but i am trying to learn. any site i find explaining CWM, it just explains what it does, i am trying to learn HOW it works so i can feel safe and i dont have to worry about bricking my phone. i was always too afraid to reset any phone i ever rooted because i never fully understood how CWM worked.. i always thought of our phones as a PC, where as a PC has a recovery partition with the software backed up in it, and i always think CWM wiped it clear, so if i try to reset the phone it will be looking for a partition that's not there. but now i think my PC analogy is wrong, and all a factory reset does is remove the .data files, not re install the software.. im trying to figure which one is true..
Bump
Guess were all in the same boat lol
after flashing stock back to the device, it also goes back to stock recovery. after boot, you still have all apps ex. titanium but once u open it will say no root access. u can then go to settings, privacy, and factory reset to get rid of titanium, etc so it is complete stock. no one would be able to tell of your past..lol. i was rooted earlier in week and made mistake of resetting to factory reset before unrooting. nothing bad happened and i unrooted and factory reset to take it to the store hope this clears up stuff.
if you are returning to a store flashing a stock Rom was all I needed to do a warranty exchange.

Now, I know this seems like a stupid question, have you got the phone plugged in to either a pc or external power?
I have a few phones that restart when plugged in to a power source. Might be a feature of the rom you are using.
Just a thought...
nope its disconnected from pc and ex power
still doesnt work?

yes.
depend on you. if you want to stick with stock, then you gonna need to find stock kernel other than this one.
if you ok with custom kernel, just flash cf-root kernel, then use triangle to reset binary count, then install mobile odin to flash speedmod kernel.
or
if you ok to break your warranty, just go for cf-root kernel, then flash speedmod kernel.
or
just flash speedmod kernel..
FIXED

Help with this blinkin phone!

I've rooted and flashed many times before.
Recently got phone back from repair after SDS and wanted to put Omega 38 on it.
Rooted it fine no problem using Odin... but have read things about CWM recovery possibly still having the problem, so thought (as I'd seen on here) that I needed philz's CWM. Don't know what I've done but now my phone appears "stuck" again.
It gets no further than the black screen with the white Samsung Galaxy Siii logo. Even if I pull the battery still nowt other than that.
I can get the phone recognised in odin, and I can also get into (I think) philz's recovery by volume up+menu+power. I've done a factory wipe and reset but when the phone starts it still stops on the logo page.
Previously, I got stock CWM (that was provided when I rooted with odin and CF-Root-SG3-v6.4) and it mentioned something about not being able to mount sd card and something about android secure. On another thread it mentions something like this with the S2 which required a odin stock tar flash.
Help me sort this problem - already been down with SDS and losing the will to live now! I just want a safe Omega38 and a safe recovery, as it wouldn't look good sending the phone back with SDS again with the same IMEI/Serial number!
did you try to put it Download mode and flash it again with Odin stock firmware 4.1.2... !!
if they change for you interal sd at your first service then you will be okay.
Have you tried a full stock flash with odin? (Not Omega or other custom rom)
I always use a full stock flash with btu csc so I keep my product code. Perka has a flash with LLA and no bootloader.
At the moment I use LLA and an older JB bootloader.
So to recap, flash a full stock firmware. If it does not boot you will then have to reflash Philz recovery again. Use volume up home and power to reboot the phone and goto recovery. Do a factory reset and reboot the phone.
You should then have a fully clean stock flash.
Or you could boot to CWM recovery and format data, system and cache. Then reboot to download mode and flash you stock rom.
If all is ok then flash Omega.
Short of that maybe its gone all Pete Tong and possibly send it back.

Thanks guys
I went away, had a brew and thought about stuff a little.
Managed to flash omega by getting it onto my sdcard. Then did a wipe of everything, and installed omega v38
Seems to be up and running now. I'm assuming that I should remove any links to CWM in my phone menu, and if need download mode in future, just use Volume Up, Menu and Power?

[Q] Flash counter

Hi everyone. Is is true that there is a flash counter on the S3? So even if I flash a stock rom (which i did) with Odin, it'll still increase and so I wont be able to use warranty if i ever need to?
I don't plan to root my phone, and i just used a different stock rom because my old one had the freezing-bug that happens a lot lately, so what do i have to do in case i ever have the need to send the cell to repair?
Thanks in advance.
it's true.
no, stock roms don't increase it

I hope this is the right topic and I tried to find my problem but I couldn't.
While ago I had CWM flashed and Cm 10.1 running. Then there was some problem with my kernel so it kept freezing 1-5 minutes after boot. So I reflashed Samsungs ROM and it worked again. Then I flashed CWM again and tried to reset the flash counter using Triangle Away. It worked but always went back to one after reboot. So I installed CM 10.1 again and tried again and same problem.
When I had CM 10.1 installed first it worked perfectly. I could flash CWM and it wouldn't increase the counter.
I just flashed it again and tried to reset it again, but still the same problem. Do you guys have any idea what to do?
Thanks in advance
you have to be stock for it to be zero. CWM is not stock
Simple procedure
Run triangle away
Flash stock Rom
Enter recovery and factory reset (wipes data and internal sd)

Okay so basically I'm just holding on and leave it like this since I don't need my warranty right now and if I need it I'm running Triangle Away and then flash Stock.
I still think it's weird because it worked a couple days ago.

I think your confusion has arisen because originally you had an old bootloader....then when you flashed back to Samsung Rom if it was a later version it may have updated bootloader and that's why it always shows 1 now.You can flash back to the older bootloader if you want and your situation should be back to where it was in first place
Okay that makes sense. So if I wanted it to be zero and back on stock I would reset it, power off then in download mode then flash stock ROM again and then I'd a data wipe and my counter should be zero. Am I right?
