Battery calibration completely broken - Android Development on Bada

So this is the marvelous problem that arises today..
the battery sensor of my Wave S8500 seems all of a sudden completely gone: it always shows 0%.
I've installed and used CM 0.32 (and previous versions..) and the last FOTA provided from one year (I've never overclocked it, so it cannot be related in any way to overheating problems). Bada firmware is LG1.
Yesterday the phone was working as usual, it was booted in Bada for all the day and before switching it off, battery state in Bada was reporting a charge of 17% (and the battery was discharging normally).
This morning, when I tried to switch on the phone in Android (Call+ Call End) the phone strangely did not boot, so I removed and put the battery and tried to start Bada, and here too nothing happened.
Then I plugged the usb cable and tried to charge it: after some minutes I tried to switch it on in Bada and the phone started but after some seconds it switched off automatically by saying that battery was fully discharged (same happens when I boot to Android, but in this this case Android crashes after it completes the boot and automatically the phone reboots in Bada).
When the phone is plugged in with the charger (whether it is switched on or off) the battery is reported as it is charging normally but the level reported is always 0%.
Does anyone ever had this problem? Is there any possible solutions? the mad thing is that when I switched off the phone yesterday it was working perfectly like new..
PS: I have not other Waves to test battery with them and I have not other batteries to test them with my Wave... and... please do not suggest to simply reflash everything unless you're quite sure it may work, reflashing with a battery sensor that seems to always read 0% does not appear to be a great idea...

Sorry, but this is nearly exact what I would test...
Because the Question is...
A.
Is Battery dead or half dead... after 2 years possible...
B.
Is something dead in handset... = really bad if Hardware damage.
C.
But you are able to use such intrument to check battery...
In German Voltmeter...
+ and - are visible on Battery...
https://www.google.de/search?q=volt...B8XLswb6j4CgBg&ved=0CFQQsAQ&biw=1920&bih=1063
Check battery...
If you are not able to use such Voltmeter... ask friends, neighbars...
Go in shop...
This thing is cheap...
Best Regards
Edit 1.
Digital Multimeter in English... you can check Service Manual from S8500...
Edit 2.
You have to check Volt... in German...
Check battery label, you can read 3,7 V...
Now use Voltmeter proper...
Normal could be 4 Volt... or 3,8... something higher as 3,7...
Empty means not 0... maybe 2 Volt or less...
No idea yet...
Post your measurement, user will tell you, if Hardware or Software related problem...

I can remember, 1 of my Batteries from S8530 was bad...
Charge Cycle or not charged...
Same S8530 with new Battery now perfect since over 1 year...
So only battery was bad...
But S8530 Hardware NOT damaged.
This strange battery I use for tests...
Best Regards

fortunately, now the problems seems solved :victory:
it's weird but after more than an hour plugged in to the DC charger, the battery sensor in the phone is came alive, now it reports 24%, a moment ago it was still at 0%, the charger is extremely hot (more than usual) and the battery is cold (usually it's hotter when charging) but it's charging again and the indicator is working.
thanks @adfree, I tried to read the voltage and ampere with a Multimeter, it reports reasonable values for voltage when the phone says the charge it's 0% (about 3.7V), but I don't know how to read the remaining charge level with it and with this lithium battery (if it's possible)..
probably it's the battery that is going to die...
Edit: another thing I noticed now when rebooting the phone is that it seems to always lose the information about the date and hour set (like when the battery is removed and the End-Call button it's kept pressed for some seconds).

Maybe we could collect also date of Battery and maybe S/N...
Lets start with date.
3 batteries of ... I have...
Code:
2010.08.12 S/N AA...
2010.11.17 S/N AA...
2010.11.28 S/N TA...
2010.11.20 S/N YA
2010.12.20 S/N YA...
So these 3 from 2010... No idea which is the faulty one...
Forgotten...
But I can use all 3 of them...
Maybe later I will check 4 more... and 1 from S8600 to see date...
Best Regards
Edit 1.
S/N first 2 Letters... and few more batteries from me added...

Mine from S8500 is:
Code:
2010.10.30 S/N AA...
Here are some screenshot taken with middle charge level:
- Without the DC charger plugged in:
- With the DC charger plugged in:

I know that this is quite old thread but I have experencied same problems.
I have Samsung Wave, and few months ago problems with battery started. It might be connected with changing to Bada 2.0 but who knows ?
On Bada 1.x the battery was lasting quite long (even 7 days without using it heavily), on Bada 2.0 it was worse (2-3 days). After 2-3 months I noticed that battery isn't charging properly. It charges and then drops. You could charge whole day and it wasn't full.
So I bought a 'new' one (new means not used, but basically it was old, production date 2010.10), and nothing changed.
Is it hardware problem?

Same thing happen with my Wave2 8530
battery stuck on 0% while the charger connected
when plug out the charger the phone shut down ..
the problem i guess was with the battery because the solution that worked is so simple i take the battery out and charge it with external battery charger .. voila
i put it back in the phone and the battery shows 86% and every things now ok .. the battery is now charging in the phone normaly .

[Q] Battery life - what's causing the problem?

Hi
I have a pretty serious problem with the battery life on my tg01! I've read the other threads here and at Modaco on the battery problems but thought I'd raise it again. I have a mugen battery now (1100) but am barely getting a couple of hours use. The battery indicator gets stuck and can go from 100% to 40 suddenly, before a few minutes later switching off. I have the original wm 6.1 rom and spb mobile shell 3.5, but the problem was there still when that was uninstalled. I can leave it charging overnight and the battery can suddenly drop and be dead in a few hours.
I'd have thought mugen battery, although only a 1100 one would have made the difference, but there's something definitely wrong because it should not be that bad!!!
What do you suggest is the best thing to do?? Will a different rom definitely solve it? or will it be down to one of the numerous programs I've installed? Or something else? A faulty phone?? It's a problem others definitely have, but is there a single working solution??
cheers!!
as far as i know battery life is a problem with all tg01's, atleast i have the same problem. the huge screen takes alot of power, add 3g or wifi and your phones going to be dead within 2 hours ! one way to overcome this is to make sure you disable data connections when not needed and reduce the backlight settings. i've been able to get over 24 hours using this method but if you want longer life the only real solution im aware of is to get the 2600 mugen battery.
EDIT: I should also mention sense and other memory hungry apps ie opera will effect battery life greatly, infact i find if i use sense my phone can be dead within 8 hours and thats with minimal useage. Constant use of opera will have the phone drained in a matter of an hour and a half.
As for a rom solving it, i dont really think its tied to a rom in anyway but you may want to try noskers rom - i find this one to be the most stable and battery life definately seems longer but i may be imagining that !
Get Task Manager, go to tab "Devices" and stop device "BAT1". Battery indicator will not work, but you can use tg01 till battery fully discharge. After power off (there will be no "shutting down" screen) plug charger immediately.
By this you will use all the capacity of battery, so you can determine if it's battery problem or tg01 battery level measuring circuit.
I've heard about battdrvr.dll modifications for other PPCs to use with higher capacity batteries, but couldn't find anything for tg01.
What Power Saving Settings do you use?

will try that definitely. it happens with the new mugen battery too however.
The Power Saving Settings I use are CPU medium (have tried low and high too), limit CPU speed for battery (tried on and off options) Wifi power consumption, restrict sleep mode OFF, Enable Wifi during sleep mode to OFF, backlight very low. Adjust backlight automatically OFF, 30 seconds backlight timer, 1 minute device sleep timer.
I am guessing there is a rogue program using up the CPU constantly running down the battery. Have you tried a hard reset? (probably a good idea to upgrade the ROM while your at it )
Well I've tried disabling the battery device in task manager. I'm not sure that made a difference, but at least I wasn't able to see the meter jump around..
a hard reset may well sort it, and may end up doing that. I can't see any high intensity CPU programs. anything else? will google latitude suck up the battery this quick?
One other thing which has started recently, which may persuade me to hard reset is that the blue led light flashes long after an sms has arrived. a soft reset stops this, but it will start again when another sms comes through. I've tried one such notification reset program on this forum but its made no difference.
what can be done to stop this?
Edit:
I should really have considered another post really called niggles I need to sort out on my TG01.
But how can I stop the screen going off immediately when a call comes in? I'd rather it waits say 10 secs then go off. the options in pocket toolman do not seem to work. I need the screen on a bit because often I switch to speaker straight away.
When I plug the charger in the TG01 the battery will charge up to 100%. The charging process will then stop (orange light turns off and never goes on again).
If my backlight or wifi is turned on, or anything else is running, the battery will start draining back down, but the charging process will not re-start. The battery will display 100% full as it might somehow detect the charger is plugged-in (?).
When I start using it, although the battery might have drained down to 40%, it will show 100% then suddenly jump to show the actual battery level.
I used to charge it overnight with backlight at full level and it would go from 100% to 0% after using it for a minute or two in the morning. I couldn't turn the device back on, even with charger plugged back in because the battery was so empty.
The trick is to turn off the backlight / wifi when it's done charging, or if you charge overnight, turn it completely off so it doesn't drain the battery when it's done charging.
hope this helps

This is not true. When the battery charges up fully, the orange charging light is extinguished to let you know it has finished charging, however the battery is still supplied with power to keep it fully charged. I know this because I use GPS alot on the phone and when it's fully charged using the car charger, it will still be 100%.
Try hard resetting your phone too. If it doesn't work, then there is something wrong with your phone!
Well it's bizzarre... the battery meter on the tg01 is certainly pretty dodgy.
with the flashing leds, what does anyone suggest? is there a way to change the led notifications back to default?
And regarding the screen going off immediately when a call comes in, it looks like there's no fix - similar threads still have no answer, unless anyone has more suggestions?
Update: I have done a full hard reset and a wm6.5 upgrade but the battery issues are still here. Has everyone who has had this issue taken it back to orange? It barely lasts 5 hours the battery.
Anything else at all to suggest???

I stand corrected.
While this was true before and had tested a few times with two different TG01 both with Orange UK stock ROM, I have retested it now and it does not happen anymore, but I have flashed a new ROM...
Apologies for the confusion.
Hi all
I was reading this thread and preferred to add my 'query' here rather than start a new one.
My TG01 has an original WM 6.5 rom minus the SPB Shell. I haven't experiences any negative experiences yet except for the fact that I have often heard about charging the battery for 8 hours etc and charging it with phone off which I always do except on few occasions I connect with USB cable to my pc /laptop...in my case I will charge my set with the toshiba wall charger that came with the set and orange LED will illuminate a few seconds after charger is plugged-in..from there onwards the orange LED will stay illuminated for maximum 3 to 4 hours and then will turn-off. I am not having any battery problems except for the usual battery drain depending on usage and apps but nothing unusual.
I'd like to know if this is normal? Is anybody else experiencing this? Not charging more than 3 to 4 hours (orange LED turning off after 3 to 4 hours).
I would appreciate some help on this 'doubt'
Thanks
I think it's problem with driver and charging akku. I have custom rom with 6.5.5
and when i charge my akku when it is on 20 % after 20-30 min shows me that 90 % full... After 1 1/2 hour akku full charged.

Well. it's not the solution, but this procedure can be a useful roundabout to access to wifi, or allow you to take a vital picture when you really need it and your battery is under 20% charge.
Imagine that you must send urgently a picture and you can't do it because someone from Toshiba decided this stupid limitation when you are at the end of the battery life.. following the maciek90's procedure, you can save this limitation and drain your battery up to the 0% if you want
Bravo maciek90! and thank you

guys, also another thing i learnt from my physics class is that putting a recharegable battery in the freezer for 1 hr, somehow give it longer battery! I tried this on my tg01 battery, it strangely worked , or it was all in my mind!
you've gotta make sure the battery isnt wet from condensation when you put itback in the phone! my battery last slightly longer. i dont do it often, only once every now and again... try at your own risk!

I definitely think it is either level measuring circuit problem or battery driver itself - not too big power consumption.
I can repeat without any problems situation where battery level suddenly decreases about 20-30% . I noticed it only during internet operations via GSM so utilizing radio. Why , I do not know . How to fix it ? I do not know yet but it is enough to restart system so that battery indicator start to show correct value - until next failure .
I thought when bad indication occures it would be enough to stop-start baterry driver using way You described. It does not work. Stopping driver cause battery indicator shows unknown level. Starting driver not fix it. Battery indicator still shown unknown value. Only restart fix it. It should not behave this way.
Maybe problem is not in driver but top bar of today screen when battery indicator exists, should have any kind of reset too?
BTH. What software is responsible for displaying battery indicator ?
Regards

Today morning next described previously error concerned with GSM radio.
I had GSM radio switched off in the night and phone in sleep mode.
Morning, when I set phone to operational mode , battery indicator showed 50% - the same as yesterday evening.
When I switched GSM radio on, battery indicator suddenly showed 30% and none phone operation could change it. Only system restart caused battery indicator started to show correct value again - 50%

yes! i am not the only one! recently i got a data plan for my tg01. when i use the data connection for 1-2 minutes, the battery drops 10% and it will stay at its false value until i soft reset. i thought that the problem was with the rom that i was using but i guess im wrong. what ROM are you on? it is very annoying and i have to constantly reset my phone. i have done some test, and if i keep using it, on data, the battery could conpletely go dead like when it is out of power, then when i power back in it is back to its true value. any solutions?!

big problem with TG01 and official ROM

HY there ,
Here is my problem :
I have a TG01 5.221840 (build 21840.5.0.60) and radio version 5001.0001.67 and my problem is that the battery lasts 30 min.
I charged the phone (off) for 12 hours and in the morning it showed 2 lines at battery indicator. I tried to put a cooked rom using the SD card method but the SDDL+ won't start because of the battery.
I can't use the phone with this rom ! The phone had different ROM's on it and it worked perfect. I got it from a friend and he put the original rom ( I Think) and therefore got my problem.
Is there a way to change the rom ? Thank you guys.

with this method dont need a 90% full battery:
But- you have to be carefull! put after screen on the battery cover- then you can not lose your battery!
2 Short-Pin
1. Copy a functional ROM on SD Card. PRG folder
2. Rename to TG01WP_00.enc
3. Put the battery in and plug Power- Kable. Charging LED flash RED *
4. short pin 1 and 3 (back side under sim card, remove black plastic) Hold the short and press RESET. Hold short pin 1 and 3 for 10 sec. Display go on and ROM flash beginn put after screen on the battery cover- then you can not lose your battery!
so I managed to install a custom rom on it , but now I have a different problem.
After I left the phone to recharge for 10 h , it has only 10 % battery ! I took the battery to be measured and it's ok , my charger is ok , my usb port is ok ....

maybe it only shows it's charged 100%, I had something like that after boot 100% and in few minutes 40%. try to charge it after turn off and leave it for night, then try
i charge my phone with the power cable that came in the box , or with the usb - data cable same from the box ! I want to know if the problem is my phone or the rom !?
try ffboy's rom, working great for me - 2 days to charge battery.
or try Nokser's pro rom , it also works great
hey there, I tried different roms but the same. I shows that it's charging , the orange led is lid , and once every few minutes it turns green then orange again. And on percent it doesn't pass 40 % ! what should I do ?
GO to service!!
the fast battery discharge it is very simple to prove, in your situation...
If you buy it from store... they will manage your situation...
If you just get the phone from another source....bad luck!.
I use this phone 1,5 years... without problems...
I read hundreds of forums....never ever hear about your type of problem!?
good luck
Unfortunately your problem seem to be hardware, either battery or phone not charging it...
Order a new battery (I suggest 1200mAh one from Mugen to keep your phone Slim).
If the problem still occurs then this is your phone's fault.

Forgive my question but what do You mean saying "battery mesaured was ok ?"
1) Did You measure its voltage ? How high it was ? You say battery indicator in tg01 shows too little so :
a) either You are wrong saying battery is ok because it is not charged enough high
b ) or if externally measured voltage was enough high You have 2 possibilities again:
- tg01 is damaged . Sucks energy like vaccum cleaner. Tragedy
- tg01 is ok but battery is damaged ( weak ). What I mean ? It is not so rare that battery can show good voltage but has weak "load" parameters. It is typical in bad quality aku. Even If You have for example 4.0V without load, any big load causes big voltage drops because bad aku has decreased capacitance and increased internal resistance.
My advice is check Your battery in any external circuit. Try to charge it externally and check voltage with load. Current about 100mA should give voltage drop about 30mV for tg01 battery. If it gives much above it ( let's say above 60mV), it is faulty.

[Q] Battery Wtf

So i just played with Custom ROMs to find the best for me...
But from one point my Phone f*cked up the battery detecting...
CM9 and CM9 detect the battery at 45% and then he Level instantly just drop to 0%...
I cant even restart my phone, so i guess the battery really went out...
So how can i fix, that the ROM would not detect it 45% but 3-4% ?
And let me fully chage my phone ?
Stock rom Always Detect it 100% and then randonly the phone shut down in random times (cuz it drops the level to 0%)
I've tried the "Fully-Charge, Fully-Discharge" But the ROM still detect the Battery wrong...
Even tried to delete the battery stats...
Any solution, or idea ?
I currently use CM with the built-in CM9 kernel...
I think its battery problem.use a new battery.ur prblm will be solved

How old is the battery? What charging cable are you using and what is the cable plugged into?
If the battery is more then a year old it could be 'tired' and not holding a charge correctly (trying another known good battery in your phone will determine this, as will trying your battery in another phone, and if it works well you may have more issues to deal with). If you got the phone second hand, you have no way of knowing the battery's history. Repeated overcharging is also not recommended, as well as leaving the battery in very hot places as it can damage the onboard circuitry in the battery.
Cheap aftermarket (non OEM) USB cables are not that great imo, they are generally not as well made and soon get loose connections, resulting in poor connectivity (charging with a bad cable can also damage the battery). Always use the original cable or a good quality aftermarket one, like Belkin.
Charging the phone from a USB port on a PC or laptop (and/or via a USB hub) is not as efficient as charging it directly from a wall mains USB adapter, because the power often gets interrupted. Ideally for the best charge you should turn the phone off and use a wall/mains socket USB lead, so as give a direct, constant, power supply to charge a battery. A typical full charge is done in two hours. If you charge this way and the battery still has issues buy a new one.

First of all, the Phone is manufactured in 11W41 (2011 Week #41) and the battery in 11W39 (2011 Week #39)
I use a tipical Micro USB charger which does not connect to the wall with USB but the cable directly integrated into the adapter...
And the phone's shipped official cable to charge throught my PC...
The battery worked fine before i forgot to delete battery stats and flashed a ROM...
After that, all ROM is getting fake battery data...
After using my phone i noticed:
-When the phone displays 70-80% charge, the battery actually have 10-15%
-When the battery reach 0% the phone not just jumps to 0% but the Phone shut down within a half second (as no more energy)
-When i charge it to 3-4% the phone show 80% again...
-So i can charge it to about 10 or max 15% when the OS detect 100% and does not charge it further more, which prevent me from properly re-calibrate the battery stats, cuz 10-15 will be always the max charge of the battery...
Now i'm looking for some kind of Mod / App that fake the Battery level to the OS (for example lock it to 5% and the OS continue to charge the battery) i know its dangerious cuz if i'm not aware i'll overcharge it and it will die permanently, but i have no better idea ATM...
Update: Sometimes after my phone dies from no remaining electron in the battery It displays 5% charge when i switch it on while connected to a charger (the only way i can switch it on) And starts to increase.. (5-6-7-8 etc..)
But sometimes it instantly jumps up to 70-80% if i think right when the screen switches of..
So i enabled "No-screen-off-whili-on-charger" and letit charging..
Will notice you about the result...

try reflash stock.ics ftf should fix this
Already tried, the Stock rom always showed 100% charge, and when the battery ran out, just powered off...
(Jumped from 100 to 0 instantly)
As i mentioned, in the reply you quoted, today it started charging from 0...
It went good, but somewhy, it just stopped at 26% and not a single volt went into the Battery...
As i Pulled out the Cable, the indicator jumped to 100 instantly...
Can you link several stock ROMs ?
I've tried with the 4.0.4 Android
but maybe the 2.3 can still work with it...

but i think theres some HW damage. even if not rhe battery maybe some config chip is broken or whatever on the board. normally flashing a stock.ics.ftf resloves all software issues, as its resets all stuff to factory..
anyway, here u can find links to other android versions: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Andro...y-Bean-ICS-Ice-Cream-Sandwich-and/td-p/154389

Never charge a phone with a laptop, it uses a process called trickle charging which can cause damage to your battery!

In my case it solved the problem but i also changed my charging cable. If you are on .291 downgrade and check if it solves the issue

Thx for tip.
btw. I dont use magnetic charger, tried all combinations with cables/chargers/calibrations/hard wipes. Battery is now charging to 64%, but when playing in games, etc. its discharging long time, like it was going down from 100%....

I have the same issue with my phone, it charges to only 83-90%, so strange!
I think our issue has something to do with the new soft charging
I had same problem + headphones broblem, I reinstalled the smartconnect and it gone
Okey guys, new thread update:
I have got new Xperia Z2, previous had some hardware touch screen problems.. and what? Same problem on new device. This problem occurs while upgrading android from 4.4 to 6.0.1 by installing updates one by one without any pause/reboot. Firstly it was around 80% max, last time 68%.. now I have solution. (Because of post above this one, I have uninstalled Smart Connect for tests). I have discharged battery to 0% and plugged in wall charger. It started to on/off/on/off after some time and I turned on screen to see % of charging.. it was 68%. I though I can keep screen up for sometime and check if it will pass 68% (because with turned on screen it drains enegry so it can't charge to "max").. and this passed... I dont know why its working, but it is. Started to blink again at 73%, 80%, 86%, 90% for sometime and now its 95%.... Just need to have turned on screen so it can't charge to its "max" After it reach 1% above limit, then turn off screen. Its definitely software bug. I still dont know how it will behave after discharging again.. Will post update. (btw. its cold like ice. xD)

I tried Motorola X Play charger and Blackberry one and they works without any problem but with the original charger and the M5 one got the on/off problem.
I've contacted Sony and send them a logcat and they said that I should send it them but I didn't, because I don't have second phone
I am having this problem recently too. My battery often charge at a very low current ( 10mA ~ 700mA ) and today it even discharge itself when plugged in!! I tried both USB charger and magnetic charging cable but still it turns out the same. I have criticized this problem on SuperSU v2.78 SR1, Google Play Service v9.8.75 and restoring them to the previous versions but still nothing changed. What I did later is I wiped all partitions ( except external_sd ) and installed AOSPA ( previously I was on eXistenZ v5.6.5 ) and after it boots it finally return a 1A current to me. However, this only happens occasionally which it will possibly corrupted like a couple of days ago. Still need to figure out what the he** is wrong with this thing. Frankly speaking, I nearly wanted to rush out to the 24/7 service centre in Hong Kong at 2am lol.

lol this happened to me too about 3 days ago.
I used the phone as always do and wanted to charge it normally with a usb cable but then i got this
CHARGING
on off on off on off
the off took 1-5 seconds and the charging led, tone and animation only appeared for a second and then went off.
it wasnt the charger, nor the cable. it was the micro usb port, no idea why because I didn`t drop it etc
a micro usb port replacement part costs only 15 bucks but unfortunately I don`t have the equipment and knowledge for repairing electrinical parts
so I had to fu**ing replace the whole motherboard which is very expensive even if you do it yourself!!! now it works ut I will never repair my z2 again. I bought it for 400$ and since buying it I spent 300$ on repairing it. if you wouldn`t have done that myself I would had spent 700$ usd for repairing it at our local phone shop.
Just cleared Smart connect app data and charged it with the default charger (14% to 100%) it charged without any problem

Yes, I think so, too... I have this issue but it happens over night and the led charge indicator blinks... I've disabled "Battery Care", that is included in some .291 roms

Battery calibration is a way off. What are my options?

So I have this annoying problem that my G5 turns itself off when the percent of charge left is somewhere between 15 and 20 percent. I'm not completely sure that it affects amount of time it could operate from the full charge but at least it leads to the following problems:
1) Battery saver is never triggered so losing the ability to use the phone is always abrupt.
2) Battery usage statistics/ time left on battery predictions seem to be totally incorrect.
I've googled and found some ways to calibrate battery without rooting the phone but it seems like they always feature charging the phone while it's turned off and somehow (maybe due to newer android) G5 always turns itself on when connected to charger for me. All the apps for battery calibration seems to do nothing.
So my question is - is there any way to fix this without going to LG tech support/ rooting the phone? May factory reset help in this case perhaps?
Same issue
Very good question and very giid analyse , i have the same problem , i was about to calibrate my batterys but seems to do nothing according to your experience . i m using lg external battery charger , i think using two devices for the battery ( lg charger + phone ) give this problem , i m very confiuesed how to solve this probleme

I second this I got 3 batteries and the cradle 1 never charges to 100% but seems to last longer than the 2 that do charge 100%
I think the cradle and charging throws the calibration way off then think you run 1 batt down till shutdown slap a new one in so the device never gets a charge discharge calibration
