Hey, I have a major battery drain issue on my GS4 on stock VRUAME7.
I had my screen on for about 33~ minutes, and you can see how bad my battery was draining compared to how it was in the morning.
I noticed that my phone was warm in my pocket all day, and I didn't know why. I did disable every Samsung feature I could such as Smart Stay, and my brightness is at the lowest it'll go. I'm in a great 4G reception area, and Wi-Fi is off. I also turned off location service crap in the Maps application.
Do you have any suggestions of what apps I can use to find the source of the battery drain? Or any tips on how to fix it? I didn't have this problem while running the Google edition ROM >.>
How do you figure your GPS is constantly on when the battery stats you've posted indicate the contrary? If you're talking about the reticle on the status bar, that is not GPS.

Well, the icon for it using GPS is always on, and after a reboot, it's still constantly on. Also, it explains why my phone was warm all day. Honestly, these battery logs aren't telling me enough. Honestly, according to these battery logs, I'd say my battery is dead if it can drain about 27% battery by mildly using the screen for 30 minutes.

That is not a GPS reticle. It is E911 and does not affect battery.

Oh, I feel like an idiot >.>
Regardless, something's draining my battery and using battery stats pro or anything doesn't help me, they all just say it's the android system..
I have not updated but android system is number 1 on my list of battery usage as well. From what I've read it's due to Google location services. If you turn them all off it should go away..... Other things like Google now may not work well though.

Yeah, honestly, this is ridiculous, I have brightness on low, turned off every samsung feature, and turned off location reporting in Google maps, and my battery tanks from like 20+ hours a day with moderate use to barely 10 on light use.
I'm just going to factory reset, and hope that fixes the problem. I literally don't have the time to debug this. This would've been a lot easier if I was rooted :\
Disregard. You preemptively addressed everything I thought to check.

A tool that I use that is great and free from the Play store is GSam battery monitor. It can breakdown exactly what program is using to most resources. You should try it.
My suggestion? Wait it out. Give it a couple of cycles. I experienced the same thing with no explanation. It just seemed to fix itself. My theory is that it's uploading all of our data to the NSA and once it's done, battery drain returns to normal.

i have not noticed any issue yet but i hope this isnt true
Google Location Services battery issue is likely the culprit based on the google play store version bug. Just do a search for google play 4.1.10 apk and download and install it. If you are running currently 4.1.6 then you have the bugged version on google play that causes google location services to drain battery.

I am having the same issue after updating to VRUAME7. Battery drain Apprx 35% faster. I do have the google play store version 4.1.6. Isn't that a later version than 4.1.10? Pardon my ignorance but the only way I know how to install programs is through google play store so I don't know how to install version 4.1.0. Do you mean to download on the desktop and install to the phone? If so, please point me to the thread on how to do this.
Thank you

Start the install again and take a screen shot of the warning (power+home) and post the screen cap here. I don't recall seeing any warnings, it installed w/out issue, and all my app data, etc., is still there.

I updated google play store to 4.1.10 last night as suggested. This morning at 9:00am my phone had a full charge and so far today I still have 70% battery at 3:47pm. The play store update seems to have fixed the battery drain for my phone. Thank you.

Hello,
I just installed Android Booster FREE. It's an app that allows you to see what apps are draining the most.
And I maybe found a reason of high OS usage.
On my phone the top 1 draining app is MTP Application(with 36%). Since it's an Android app(package name: "com.android.MtpApplication), it'll be counted in Android OS and is indeed listed.
Could anyone please try and verify this on their own phones? To see app specific usage, install with link above, open it ->Utilities -> Power Manager -> Applications.
Sorry if this isn't the reason or if it's only on my phone. But I don't think so. And it would be a good reason since MTP application is Samsung-specific. My firmware: XKE2.
Please let me know! Thanks!
And please don't vote if you have frozen your apps !

that's strange, but that's also counted as a part of "Android OS" I think, so it could be that (even though I don't have that!).

Hmm if it's that I would look a bit dumb with creating a thread for that ^^'. I installed it on advice from someone on this forum in Themes/apps section(here), and I though it wasn't bad because the rest of the apps seems to be correct with me /:.
Here is my usage. Its Android OS again... but look at the time since unplugged and the total power left (60%)!! I have used it quite a bit as well. Ive never had a smart phone that lasts so long.

Well this app is not good working: it just picks up the first in the list of "Android OS" as I have experienced.
Mine says BluetoothTest!
The MTP makes a certain sense though. If you look in various events in the Autostarts app, it appears a lot.

Since upgrading to 4.1.2 I'm suffering a bit with battery life. Looking at BBS, in the past 57 minutes my battery has gone from 100 to 92% I've had 242 wakelocks from GTALK_ASYNC_CONN_com.google.android.gsf.gtalkservice.AndroidEndpoint
Now when I was on 4.1.1 I suffered terrible battery life until I unticked "Use wifi to help determine location", and then I was averaging about 32-34 hours to a full battery (about 3% per hour), great! I was very happy with that. Now I'm losing 7-10% per hour and this wakelock seems to be the issue.
After Googling about a bit there doesn't seem to be a concrete solution, so any help is appreciated.

Maybe you can log out of GTalk?
It seems to be a Gtalk issue so why not log out of it ?
Better yet, just uninstall it for few days and observe the behavior.

Hi Eggman, thanks for your reply.
I should have mentioned in the first post, from what I've read it isn't actually Google+ that causes this, it's a general Google Account process, and to be fair I shouldn't have to log out of G+ to save battery, I don't with FB or Twitter. (I'm not shooting the messenger here)
Anyway, luckily I don't use G+ so it I have just loaded it up and logged out, let's see if it changes anything.
He says gtalk, you say g+... See the discrepancy?

Sorry, I thought Gtalk was just a byproduct of Google+, basically like Facebook Chat is to Facebook.
Well, either way I've logged out of Google+ and it's completely killed the wakelock. Weird.
Gtalk and google services like gmail were facing a widespread outage today. So that's why the wakelock. It'll get fine once the service resumes normally.

My girlfriends Nexus 4 had this wakelock and it was draining her battery pretty quickly. I monitored it for a bit and realised that at work she connects to a free wifi network which blocks the ports Google Service uses to sync. I told her not to use that wifi network anymore and the wakelock has gone.
Could it be something similar to this for you?

Yes at my work we have proxy connection wifi and I realised when wifi is on this wakelock is and when I'm on 3g it isn't. But the weird thing I didn't have this wakelock at all before 4.1.2 with the same situation.

Ive had this issue for a while now, its a massive wakelock compared to the rest of them!
The solution that worked for me, although I need help with it, is to disable all the 'gtalk' entries under Google Framework Services in the app called Autorun Manager.
Freezing the app, or logging out has no effect as its linked with Gmail and Play store.
HOWEVER, when i disabled these entries i therefore couldnt get gmail to auto sync anymore (didnt try play store).
SO, there are about 5 or so entries in the framework that have the word 'gtalk'. If someone could find the entry that disables this lock but still keeps gmail (and whatever else) working properly that'd be great.

From what I've personally seen, that wakelock is related to some as-yet-discovered google service doing it's thing over Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi only. When connected to my house's Wi-Fi, I've seen in a couple of times...but there is a mobile AP at my work and I am guessing they've locked things up tight and might be restricting certain traffic.... in any case, when I am connected to the APs at work, that wakelock GOES NUTS. I disable Wi-Fi... and POOF! the wakelock vanishes. As soon as I pop it back in, the WL cranks back up again. I turned off Sync and it still keeps cranking. I tried disabling google's backup, you name it.. still there. I haven't quite found out exactly what process is throwing that WL... is there a way to find that out?
Something seems to be trying to phone home over my Wi-Fi, can't, and its throwing up a WL while it keeps trying. But when I'm running over the Mobile network, it's happy as a clam and never heard from. Is there a way to find the exact process/service that is triggering this wakelock?
Hi...
It's been a week, I experience severe battery drain...
At the night I have 100 % battery, then in the morning it's dead because no power left... I have to recharge it again.. I didn't use it... I just left it with wifi active...
When I check the usage... It show that 80 % consumed by "Media"..
What the hell is this application /services?
Other time, I tried to turn off that services.. But it turn on again automatically...
I did try factory reset, but I still have this issue...
And, a quarter part of the screen (top) is very hot while other part isn't...
Does anyone know what is going on with my XZU?
Thanks in advance...

Would be great to have a screenshot. Also can you check you wifi data details? Media app is use for media storage, DRM content, downloads and download manager. So to make it simple, it downloaded from night to morning and drained your battery. Do you see apps from the market you didn't download manually installed on your phone? Like a game with over 1gb of data or anything else (if you choices option to auto backup it restore all the apps you use from the market on your previous devices). Or did you put any file to download on any browser reboot our phone before the download is finish (Dolphin browser keep the link in memory and resume or restart download at boot).
First of all I would advise you to put your phone on stamina mod, and set it up if you use some apps like Viber, whatsapp, Facebook and etc... It really improve battery drain while you are not using your phone.

Wifi data details? I m not sure what you mean.. but I m curious that my XZU downloaded any data related to Media...
The last time I remember about it, I played with Jive (which is my primary suspect) (in the Walkman app)...
After that, I tried factory reset...and my last factory reset is last night... and this time, I havent activated my Google account and everything.. just to make sure that no account is activated...
Regarding stamina mod, I have tried it... even used Green Power Premium app (they are very useful)...but only after that issue occurred, then I try to leave it as factory default (I didnt install anything or activate any apps)... and as I said, it still drains the battery severly... and this so called "Media" remains there...

PS. My device has been 'up' for 2 days... 'media' isn't on my list of apps drawing current.

Since it has just been factory reset, the historical data usage is gone.. I will check tommorrow if the issue is still there
No, I didnt...in fact, I didnt install any app nor activate any account (gmail, twitter, etc)
Currently, I m recharging it and will be 100% capacity...and will see if it will get drained ...
How about you guys, is this "Media" service also running in the background of your device?
Thanks...

Media is not draining anything for me as well. Also just few kb on my data usage, but I remember I got it on my Nexus 7 as well, after a full wipe and flashing a new ROM at morning it was empty. But the day after it wasn't anymore.
You said you didn't registered any gmail account yet. Did it happen as well when you had a Gmail account registered? Just wonder if there is not a bug with the phone connect to Internet and the lack of an account link to playstore.

Before factory reset, yes, my Gmail is activated... now, not yet activated..
BTW, it's been around 15 minutes since I unplugged the charger.. now battery capacity is down to 91%...
It s just standby with wifi active...."Media" consumption 72%
Data service is only around 150 Kb
I just dont understand what is happening...
Maybe battery is damaged?
Do what I suggested. It will tell you exactly what the problem is. Link you to a site explaining what to do for that particular Wake lock.
You can also run an app called 'cool tool'
It will run in real time and tell you what CPU frequency you are running
Here is a video I made about the heat issues of the S4.. It will help you too

Hi, I think the reason of battery drains is not related with downloading data..
I dont know how it happens, but it seems that my device always active even if the screen is off.
I installed app called "wakelock detector"..
The media is the service that keep my device "awake"... it prevents/blocks the system from sleeping...
My question is what is the cause? is my device get infected by virus or malware?
Any suggestion to solve this issue? or is it hardware defect?
EDIT:
I have solved the problem.
I reformatted the sd card and factory reset.
Now, it's back to normal again.
It seems that the system keep on trying to scan the media file in the sd card.
There must be something wrong with my sd card (may be bad sector/cluster).
After reformatted it, everything seems normal.
Cheers

I'm not familiar with that app. Did you try betterbattery stats? It should have told you what it was, and linked you to a site explaining what the app or service is. Then you can freeze that service or uninstall it if its not a system app.
I've tried nearly everything I can think of and nothing stops this battery from killing itself very fast. Half a day on a charge is rediculous. I don't know what else to do.

First of all what do you have turned on (Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, etc.). Second, what applications are you using to help/find battery issues (Greenify, Wake Lock Detector, Tasker, etc.). Without this information it's hard to tell you what is wrong.
Personally, I have bluetooth on all the time connected to my G Watch. Location is set to Battery Saver. I have Greenify installed and hibernating apps when the screen is turned off and using Tasker to control CPU speeds. My phone has been off the charger for about 7 hours and I am at about 88% battery left.

Grab us the dump file from Better Battery Stats and we could help you out more. I get great battery life with my G3.
I use Greenify ,Lux , BT on most the time as well as Location. Typically my brightness is around 70% -80% as well.
I don't have all sorts of useless apps and widgets though, only 1 clock widget on the lock screen . and if I don't need an app I simply uninstall it....
Anyways grab that dump file from BBS if you'd like some help.

You could I suppose however I myself don't use that app. I don't use any of the GSam apps.
Grab BBS here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15869868
Install it and enable root features in the advanced tab and then let it run for a little while. Then on the main screen you'll see a "share" button and dump file will be already highlighted. Select that and it'll put the file on the root of your SDCard.
If you could upload that it will be more helpful. BBS is more useful in my opinion and gives better details than GSam.
Once you get used to using it.... You'll wonder why you weren't using it in the first place

Here's the file I hope it tells something
I was having the same issue. No matter what I did it just sucked and I'm no noob. I just did a flash back to stock using the 10b tot file and set everything back up and now it's great. Easily lasting twice as long. I also didn't reroot yet.

It's showing your phone was awake about 1.5 hours more than your screen on time.
msm_tsens_lock (): 4 h 20 m 38 s (15638 s)
Kept your phone awake for over 4 hours. Your other various wake locks don't look to out of control to me, you have quite a few that will add up but I don't see any rogue apps really.
msm_tsens_lock
Is to do with Thermal Sensor. My G3 has never had that kernel wake lock so I'm not 100% that's it's normal or not, could very well be?!
What I'd suggest though anyways is to clear your Caches and Dalvic ( can use an app from Store to do this easily ) then give your phone a day or two before judging battery life so the Caches can rebuild.
And reboot your phone once a day. Also what I've been doing lately is I have my phone set up so that when I " knock off" it uses Greenify to force Hibernation of my apps then locks the phone.
That can be done through any launcher that supports gestures , I use Nova.
If nothing seems to work, factory reset should do it, though i know that's annoying.
I'll keep looking at your dump file just to see if i missed anything, I've been looking through a few of them and my eyes hurt[emoji12]

I'm not sure about the phone app, but you should try disabling some Google services with disable service or use Greenify donation edition to hibernate play services.

there is no problem with google play services, the phone app stays awake all time, even i dont use it,, the device dont get to deep sleep because of that ?
Any help ?
The mobile data and screen brightness are the biggest drainer of battery life by a mile.
I would only turn the brightness up on my phone when i use it then turn it down later.
You can restrict background data, this one is the holy grail in battery conservation. Unless you specify otherwise a lot of the apps that you have on your phone like Facebook Twitter and many many more will constantly try to connect to their servers to look if there is anything new to report. To do this hit you settings, Connections, Data usage, menu, then put a tick in Restrict background data to force your phone to stop syncing continuously.

Using that app and finding the cause is a much better option than just returning to stock because it works.

I suggest you to install one or both of below free apps to monitor what is draining the battery:
- Battery Doctor(Battery Saver)
- GSam Battery Monitor
With the first one you can also set the option 'CPU Management=YES' so the phone can deep sleep
One the app is identify you can hibernate it to avoid running in background with the app 'Greenify'
Thanks.

Strange, maybe and issue with that specific S3 model.
I have tested CM, Slimkat, C-ROM, Carbon, Omegarom on S3 GT-I9300 and I haven´t had that issue,
battery life is better than the stock rom.
Maybe you can try to run a cleaning kernel script before flashing if not done yet.
Use the betterbatterystats app i mentioned before to find out whats causing the phone app to stay awake.
Its all good to say the phone app is keeping it awake but you need to find the trigger or service that is doing so. The screen shots you are providing are basic and do not provide this, you need a log from this app.
