HTC always finds a way for me to buy their phone when I want to upgrade. First the Fuse instead of 1st gen iPhone, then the HTC MyTouch which was rooted till Jelly Bean, Now the One instead of the S4.
HTC always gets me with build quality. After all the hype and hoopla i still have an HTC.
Can someone tell me why I should root my phone. Any new features?
Ive watched dozens of vids and nothing has really SOLD me on doing it.
When I rooted my MyTouch it was like Night and Day. I just dont see that much of an improvement when my phone is rooted.
Thoughts?
The only two phones I didn't want to root were the Nexus 4 and now the HTC One. There is nothing I need more than what came out of the box.
I unlocked ,my boot loader and installed a custom recovery to play with ROMs ,etc.
This way I'm now on 4.2.2 and my HTC logo functions as menu, and I have several sleep and wake options where as before I only had the power button on top for that. There are several other reasons Its beneficial but in the end its all personal preference.
HTC One - Unlocked, ARHD 12, Bulletproof Kernel, Several mods.

Tab 2 7 - Cyanogenmod
Only thing is, you couldn't go back to unrooted stock even if you wanted to. The file isn't available..

Yes. Yes you can. You unlock the boot loader install a custom recovery and BACKUP the stock rom before you root it.
Simple as that.

I would root in a heartbeat if battery was an issue. Out the box this phone is a beast and battery life is ridiculous.
I'll definitely give it a go as long as I can back up the stock.
I've watched numerous vids and some options interest me but haven't pushed me over the edge to do anything.

No problem.
Just make sure after you unlock the boot loader and install a custom recovery, do a backup in recovery prior to flashing the zip to root. Also copy it to your PC for safe keeping. This way if something happens or you want to return to stock for OTA, you can simply restore the backup, reflash stock recovery and even relock the bootloader if you wanted. Granted by default it will now say relocked in the bootloader but that's no big deal.

So you're saying you would be able to restore it to the exact condition it was when it came out of the box? Unrooted, Stock Recovery, etc..
I had seen someone else say you couldn't do it, but sounds like you're right

Yes you sure can.
You can restore the backup you made of the OS that's not rooted, refresh the stock Recovery and lock the bootloader. It will then be back to stock. Only thing that will show is in the bootloader it will show RELOCKED as opposed to LOCKED

Well then, technically I am correct and it would not be the same as stock unrooted out-of-the-box. And yes, they can tell.

Considering you unlock the bootloader through htc development, I figured you knew they would be aware anyways. You can unlock with s-off but I'd suggest htc dev. They simply state if you cause damage as a result of unlocking the bootloader, they won't cover it. I believe there is also a way to make it say locked instead of relocked. I know of several people whom have had successful warranty claims with unlocked bootloaders.
What are your concerns? Just curious.

Yes Htc clearly states it on the website. If you are to brick your phone say as a result of unlocking the bootloader they obviously won't cover it. However say it's a defective sensor for example they will cover it. At least that's been my the experience of many people I know.
I thought you meant you couldn't revert to an unrooted stock OS.
Heck you can now even convert some carrier branded htc ones to the Google play edition and receive OTA updates.

So, I'm new to rooting, and, as such, after looking around the forums, I haven't found a similar thread (for the EVO 3D) about what ROM I should get. I've been looking through the CDMA forum at different ROMS, but I'm not sure which one to use. I won't be downgrading to 1.4 HBOOT, since I don't have a linux PC or the balls to do it, so I will be using the HTC Unlocker. All I want is to have the ability to use the Hotspot/tethering for free, because I'm not about to pay Sprint an extra 30 dollars/mo on top of my 65 dollar/mo plan right now.
So, if anyone has any help, I'd really appreciate it, because I have no idea what I'm doing.

If that's all you want, you don't need to flash a new rom. Just root and install the Wireless Tether app.

You can download a rom whenever you want. Just make sure you are rooted and have a recovery and the Flash Image GUI app installed before flashing

Can I download the Wireless Tether app from the App Store?
The app sucks. You should use the actually sprints hotspot app. Also I suggest not using image GUI but 4ext recovery

My friend is saying there's more ways to root your phone other than the HTC Unlocker or the downgrade to 1.4 hboot. First off cause I don't have a linux PC, and my friend's friend said he used a program to root it on windows.

That's how I unlocked mine on boot 1.5 there's a video so its easier for people who don't know a lot and also don't have to install sdk but just a file which has all the files needed to root.

If you are on hboot 1.5, the htc dev unlock, then hboot downgrade is the ONLY method.

That second link is over a year old, and again, doesn't work for hboot 1.5. You have one and only one method:

Again, the HTCDev method will give you root, but not s-off. If you want s-off, you have to downgrade your hboot. And it doesn't take a while, unless you consider a few minutes to be a while.

And if you take the OTA ICS update, it could update the hboot and you may never be able to root it. If you are going to root, do it now.

Yeah, but the thing is, I've been comparing HTC Unlock with downgrade and root, the only difference, besides true s-off, is you aren't able to have you own splash screen with HTC Unlock (Big whoop.) So, instead of taking the time (albeit a few minutes) To downgrade my phone and to root it that way. I think I'll wait for ICS to come out, then for the HTC Unlock to update for it, since I rather like the way ICS will look, also as I've said before, all I really want is the ability to use the Sprint Hotspot without paying an extra 30 bucks. That and with the HTC unlock, I can still put on a custom ROM, if I so desire, once they've been updated for ICS.

If I was in your shoes.. I would downgrade the hboot... Root it.. and install the tethering app... And be done with it... Regardless of when the ota comes out for ics.. that means very very little...

Well, my biggest problem with trying to downgrade is I'm having trouble finding a way to downgrade with just windows, since I don't have Linux. Unless I just didn't read it right, I think someone said that the link I posted about downgrading with windows is outdated?
EDIT: Why would I install a tethering app when, supposedly, I can use the Sprint Hotspot, which is supposed to be better than the tethering app? Also, I have quite a few apps on my phone and I'm not sure I'll be able to use them all still if I root my phone.
It's really not hard to get Linux. You can even partition your windows machine and run Linux alongside it. I prefer Linux. And why not? Android is Linux...

Well, for me, there's several issues with that. 1) I'm using a laptop that isn't mine for the time being, and i don't want to go and make a new partition. 2) If I were to wait till the parts for my new desktop to come in, I'd have to wait till the end of March anyways for a new processor to come out. 3) I've never even messed with Linux.
I finally upgraded to one of the ginormous phones after fighting it for so long. I just couldn't take the "out of memory" errors anymore on my Aria. So now that I have the HTC One X, I'd like to sell my mint-condition Aria. It's got CWM and CyanogenMod 7.0.3, but like I said, with hardly any apps on it, it's constantly out of memory.
So my question is what should I do with this Aria before I list it on Craigslist?

Plain ol' stock Aria's are selling for $100-$125 here in LA. Should I add a premium price for having it rooted and custom ROM installed?
In my experience, having a rooted phone with a custom ROM had actually lessened interest in phones I've sold. I would go full stock, unrooted, stock recovery also. You never know when someone will want to do a factory reset, and if I understand correctly, this causes problems for rooted phones. The people that know how and are interested in rooting will do it anyway, the rest will be perfectly happy with it in stock form.

I'd go with rooted 2.3.5 liberty S rom. I'd delete some stock apps and overclocked the core. Then i'd sell it. But that's just me
Stock ROM I would pay less if the Phone's ROM is customed.
I'd just leave it on a stock looking ROM.

My guess is you would have better luck for resale with stock ROM.
I base this on the experience of selling a nearly new car. I have always been a fan of manual transmissions and to this day that's all we have in the garage. About 20 years ago I was assigned overseas and had to sell a nearly new Mazda 626 with a stick. I got few calls, all of whom had overlooked "manual transmission" in the ad and backed out immediately when they realized it. I ended up selling it back to the dealer at a big loss.
Only five percent or so of automobiles on the road today have manuals. I imagine custom ROM users are a similarly small minority.
Even though the experience is better, even though my own technophobe wife loves her Aria running CM7 nightly, a random buyer--who probably will drive up with an automatic--would be more likely to buy with the stock ROM.
PS: By mentioning a car sale 20 years ago, I've probably identified myself as part of an even smaller minority: old people who run with a custom nightly
Here's what you should do. Root it, install custom recovery, boot loader should be unlocked after using unrevoked. Then flash Liberated FR008, so it will look stock, but they can read up on root and take it from there if they care enough

This is well and good until they decide to factory reset within the ROM for whatever reason. I'm not sure if that is disabled in Liberated FR008 or not, but better safe than sorry IMO.

All a factory reset does is wipe /data and /cache
Root is in /system/xbin
Could you elaborate on problems that would arise?

I can tell you that once I tried to wipe data from the ROM itself (not CWM Recover) and it hosed the phone. I couldn't boot to anything.
This was when I first got my Aria and didn't know much about rooting Android devices.
I would restore Stock and sell it. If the buyer asks about any techie-stuff like "is it rooted?" you could root it, load CWM Recovery, and ask if he'd like a custom ROM on it. You could even ask for a little extra $$ for the effort... Just a thought.

Today?! Awesome, I've been checking daily but haven't heard yet... off to look now!
Soooo...really like the phone so far but not in love with it yet....thinking about maybe returning it if it doesn't grow on me....long story short it's unlocked and rooted running custom firmware....now i did make a stock nandroid before flashing anything....so can I flash back to the stock nandroid and just relock it and it will be ok? Will att give me a hard time and or know it was tampered with?..I would hate to have the next potential phone owner not be warrentied because of me unlocking it....

As long as you can restore it to bone stock and you just tell them you decided it's not the phone for you, you might be able to. I've heard of people returning unlocked and re-locked phones before without any problems, but they could tell you to keep it if they want to look closely and decide to hold firm on that you're technically voiding the warranty by unlocking.

Yeah I can return it stock thanks to my nandroid...but I'm just wondering if att is really that smart....I'm mean correct me if I'm wrong but once I relock that tampered notice disappears right? So I'm just wondering how they would even know I guess....or I guess I could just sell the phone too if need be

I recently got the HTC m8 (att version) and was holding off on doing anything to it until the EPS got added. Since the update today, EPS is currently live on my phone. How would I go about rooting it now? I saw a post about the old root methods, but will they still work with the new update? I basically want to root my phone so that I can uninstall any bloatware. I know I can disable it but would prefer to get it off completely. On my s3 I also used an app to prevent certain apps that I periodically used from automatically starting up. Would rooting be my best option? I have read up a little on the S-off, and I don't believe I need to do this to uninstall bloatware, but please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks in advance for any advice.
You may just wanna boot loader unlock and flash twrp first in order to keep that full stock image. So once you start uninstalling things you don't run into trouble. Also it's the easiest method to root (after fastboot flashing twrp 2.7.0.2, you can flash supersu 1.94 via recovery and your good to go. Stock backup with root

Old root methods worked for me, so unlocking the boot loader, flashing TWRP, then flashing supersu will work.

If you're already S-Off, then the update can't do anything about it.
If you're S-On, and firewater was patched in the update, then you shouldn't be able to S-Off (unless another exploit is found). Thing is, I don't think anyone who's S-On has updated yet to test firewater. I will when I get my replacement, but I won't have that for days.

Firewater still works on 1.58. At least it still works for one person so far: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751803

SWEET! Looks like AT&T was either too lazy or didn't have enough time to have HTC patch it (betting on former), either way we still have the ability to S-Off.
Guess I'll be able to give another confirmation in a few days.

Why not s-off before updating? As you already said, this is always going to be the safer route.

With my luck, I'll somehow get the one M8 that was updated prior to shipping.
If it's not updated, I'll definitely S-Off before that, but I was also wondering for people who get M8s with 1.58.502.1 on the phone from the factory.

Some people are having issues with the OTA update after they S-OFF. About 30-40% through the update process, their phone freezes with a red exclamation point on the screen. Then again, it works for others, so I'm not really sure what's causing the issue.
Hello everyone, I am getting ready to buy a used m8 and am not 100% sure if it is stock. I am not familiar with HTC. They sent me a screen shot. The only thing I can tell is that it doesn't have the 20mb update yet. They said the only thing is rooted. I am wanted to know if its stock. I'd rather its stock and then I'll play with it. Thanks for your help.

The screen shot isn't going to tell you anything. Those can be hacked to say whatever.
The phone isn't stock if its been rooted. The phone can never be truly returned to stock once its rooted. The bootloader has been unlocked (which HTC has a record of) unless the user happened to make firewater temp root work, and s-off without unlocking the bootloader, which I think is very unlikely.
A screenshot of the bootloader screen would be more useful, as it would tell you s-off or s-on, if the bootloader is locked, unlocked, relocked, and other details which are harder to change than within the OS.
Even then, if the bootloader says s-on, you would never know if the previous owner did s-off then returned to s-on, which still throws a security flag that can't be changed.
Or are you asking if its been returned to stock? Any phone can easily be returned to stock, now that the AT&T RUU is available.
Thanks for the reply. I realize that once it rooted its not full stock. I was curious if its on stock rom. I wont know more until till I physically see the phone. I've had samsung, motorola, and lg so I'm not familiar with HTC. I'm trying to gather info to know what I'm looking for.

The photo the seller sent doesn't have the right info to tell if its on the stock ROM. You want software number (which isn't on the photo), not build number.
But as I said, it doesn't matter. The phone is easily returned to the stock ROM with the RUU, or other means.
