No 4.3 in the works? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Are we the only s4 with no 4.3 in the works?

Im sorry but think anout what you just asked. why would a BRAND NEW flagship phone not get the next android version? Jesus christ, use some logic.

Someone forgot their midol.

There will probably be a 4.3 to come, ~six months after everybody else gets it. Thanks for posting this in the right section. There are at least 4 question posts on the front page of General right now.

Having a slopped together no custom kernel 4.3 build isn't all that enticing to me.
But I do have by own build that boots. Its OK. It feels and looks exactly like 4.2.2 ge. The differences are that it really is aosp vs tw-aosp.

Isn't there also a pretty significant decrease in Android OS memory usage? More memory for cached apps is always good. It may or may not indicate a slight performance boost as well. Lighter memory footprint may mean lighter CPU usage as well. *shrug*
Also, I believe 4.3 also improves graphics and GPU performance quite a bit using some techniques that I can't remember off-hand.
Hard to say how much these are kernel related or dependant though.

Likely true. I only ever ran it for 5-10 minutes at a time. So none of the new memory handling was apparent to me.
I may play with it more but I've got a lot of other stuff I want to get done.

Check the other s4 forums dopey. And take a chill pill while you're there. No need for needless childlike hostilities. I'm just trying to open up a discussion about something I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering about.
Thanks for the input dubbsy, I was assuming it was something like that. I was wondering if there was working network on it. I just wanted to get it running to convince my friend with his nexus 4 to root hahaha.
I currently run your ge build, but would love a working 4.3 even just for the SS hahaha. But performance wise I'm sure currently something with all the tw firmware would probably perform better.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

For benchmarks the TW framework should bench higher every time. But I haven't ran benchs on 4.3. I don't know why it would be any different than the rest of the pure aosp builds. I would think any gains with 4.3 would have to be compared to a similar build of 4.2.2 and not TW-based. The biggest differences I've seen from AOSP to TW based roms were in the cpu category and by huge differences. Presumably due to samsung drivers.
I did not get network working yet, didn't really try. Probably won't because I'm too busy with other things. Random FCs also due to not having a kernel specific for the device. If I took the time to actually build my own kernel for it I could get it working at least as well as my ge build. But when I say that, any person with a working knowledge of android and using a kitchen could do the same.

Thanks for the input, that's pretty close to what I was guessing. Did you notice any increase in touch response? I read there is on the nexus 4 but no other devices.

I shouldn't have even posted this because my "whythehellnot" thought process got the best of me. So I have the 4.3 ramdisk, I have the CM 4.2.2 boot.img from the nightly, and I have my kitchen all set to build a vzw 4.3 kernel. Now I just need to do it.

Seriously? You just had to throw your irrelevant scores into the discussion knowing full well it was irrelevant due to the scoring differences between TW and AOSP which was previously mentioned as being irrelevant in this very thread? Is that really what youre saying?
Anyway...Stock basically cheats anyway when it comes to benchmarks. Open up quadrant or antutu on TW and it will automatically turn on all cores and run at max speed, no matter how little the CPU is being used. ASFAIK this doesn't happen on an aosp ROM.

[Q] Memory leaking, 4412 devices..

As per Andrew Dodd (Samsung device maintainer for CM), our devices (4412 based devices) apparently leak memory when running a 4.2.1 AOSP based ROM. What effects, if any, will this have on our device?

It depends. I only saw him complaining about one app in particular and honestly, CM is not really AOSP. AOSP-based, but they have changed quite a bit of things. Who is to say the problem isn't there?
I know that probably singes the hair on the heads of CM devs, but they cannot automatically assume that CM is bug-free.

Yeah I see your point about it not being bug-free. This dev also seems to get mad at quite a lot of things pertaining to developing for the Exynos platform. This post just sparked some interest and I just wanted to know how safe it would be for an end-user like me to use CM as a daily driver. Thanks for the insightful info though. Oh and later in the comments he says that even pulling down the notification bar can cause memory leaking so I'm not sure that it's only Ingress that's causing a leak.
edit: Oh and sorry to hear about your old Note 2. I hope your CLN doesn't die like that!

This only applies when running the unmerged Mali changes. Since its mem leaking, it hasn't been merged into CM gerrit so its not affecting any current nightlies. Kejars basic kernel does have the Mali changes though so you might get some mem leaking if you flash that.

Memory leaks are basically something stuck in memory that keeps requesting more memory when it isn't needed, but never releasing any memory that they don't need anymore. Over time, the phone would just get really sluggish. Restarting should fix it, but it would slowly get back to where it was before.

S4 sluggish as heck

I just got my S4 and rooted it and flashed Beans 2. Phone is so sluggish. I have wiped and wiped and reinstalled several times. This is nothing like the GN2 on beans 18 that i had. ANy thoughts? I'm trying Hyper ROM now.
Did you odin back to stock.

Can't blame a device for being sluggish when you installed an aftermarket firmware. That's similar to complaining about a firm ride after installing an aftermarket suspension.
I would say go back to stock unrooted and see how it runs.

the gs4 in general is a very laggy, sluggish phone. the hardware doesn't seem to matter; touchwiz supercedes that and it lags it out like crazy.
i've seen varying reports of people who were happier with the Note 2 in terms of speed and less heat, and regretted selling theirs for an S4.
i sold my s3 towards an s4, so i can't say i agree with them, bc i was never a big note 2 fan...but hell, even the s3 was less sluggish than this phone.
stock rooted/unrooted on this thing is even slower than custom roms..hell, beans 2 is the quickest rom in my opinion.

I actually came from a note 2, I kept it on stock unrooted and it ran the same as my s4. You guys are both noticing lag but are on the same ROM. I'm not bashing roms or devs, but nowadays, manufacturers are doing such a great job in customizability and speed that many custom roms only slow down or kill battery life.
The first phone I realized this on was my rezound. Most of the scripts and "tweaks" incorporated are all placebo and do nothing. There's devs that create Roms and add "faster and better battery life" like in every update changelog that it becomes ridiculous.
This phone stock does as much as cm7 did in terms of customization but some people still find reasons just to bash stock firmware.

Using Clean Rom 1.3 odex version, my phone runs faster than stock and smoother than stock. The only time I get sight lag is when I have almost every app, including games running.

I love this phone, but notice some slight lag when transitioning between apps and other things. My last couple phones were really bad for lag until switching to slimmed out custom ROMS (usually AOSP.) TouchWiz has lots of nice features that I enjoy, but I'd bet AOSP/CM/AOKP/etc will run much quicker once the quirks are ironed out.
On another note, I seem to remember other carriers getting a pretty quick update which made the phone less laggy. Obviously it also broke root exploits (I think) but nevertheless a lag fix would be nice. I'm stock rooted for now, but am watching development on several roms.
its got nothing to do with the rom I'm running. the s4 is laggy out of the box. clean rom was laggy, hyperdrive was laggy. beans id the least laggy of them all. don't get me wrong, I love my s4, its just laggy lol. Im sure some updates will help it.

With such high demand for the device there is no doubt it was rushed. You don't produce and move this many units without cutting corners. As Jay said previously I believe some leaks down the line should fix some issues that people are having.

Lag and dropped frames on custom Roms

Hey all,
Last night I rooted my DNA and installed TWRP recovery after using the latest Moonshine method to get S-OFF. I first installed the CM 10.1 Unofficial rom that I found under the DNA Original Android Development section, and that was a disaster, as it dropped frames constantly and was super buggy. I even did an Antutu test which it struggled through and scored a 11000... Then I went ahead and flashed one of the newer Sense 5 ROMs from the DNA Android Development forum and that one only faired slightly better with performance. I find it odd that they're running so terribly. Did I do something wrong in the process? I wiped the cache and dalvic cache and did a factory reset and all. I thought that with the DNA's specs, I wouldn't have this trouble...

I barely experience lag on the Sense 5 ROMs...
I definitely know what you mean. Trying out Sense 5 currently. I love Sense 5, but the drop in performance in relation to stock can be glaring at times. Especially opening and closing the app drawer.
This has been my experience on many custom ROMs over the years. I just think some people are more tolerant.
I downloaded an app from Play Store that fixes TRIM issues. Phone speeds up for a while, then slows down again. I also overclocked to 1.75 Ghz. The app is called LagFix

Crazy realization!

No doubt. That's because the core dev base is outstanding, and because a lot of the development work pushes the inherent flaws in the OTA builds. To build a rom, I believe one must dig into the guts of the OS, learning both how it functions and how to improve it.

well if your going to keep touchwiz, you may as well be using a stable touchwiz.
though if it will make yall feel better im sure i could whip up some extra buggy roms with no problem

De-TW ROM.

So long story short I came from a long line of HTC phones and one of the big things I miss about the ROMs is when the developers would take a stock OTA and debloat everything down to just the basic elements and throw a launcher on it. You would get all of the benefits of the OTA (better camera, better reception, etc) but still have the slimmed down fast OS. AI still have not seen that here. I was wondering if any dev would mind stripping a ROM down or if anyone just feels like I do?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
Why not aosp or cm or any of the other source built roms? Seems like a waste to de touch wiz a rom when those are available. .

Not sure how exactly the note 2 is compared to the S3 that I had, but this isn't necessarily true. CM based roms have to reverse engineer the radio resulting in worse signal and data handoffs relative to touchwiz. As far as I know, there has never been a fully functioning touchwiz camera ported to CM. Correct me if I am wrong.
If you want better signal and camera, touchwiz is your only option. I've flashed dozens of CM based roms, and all have the similar data and csmera issues. Remember, your experience may vary, but this is all relative to touchwiz, which has the proprietary drivers.
