[Q] Sync one file too two different folders? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So here is the thing, my so LOVES minecraft and I turned a creative land to a survival one on his tablet.
He thought that was so cool but then was quick to ask "why when I make a change in one won't it make the change in the other".
Well I thought about it and it would be a simple matter of syncing the one file to both folders..
So is there an app for that ?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app

Hoping to get a new set of eyes.

I gave previously synced mine craft games with Dropbox between two computers. Is that what you are seeking? It works for Windows and Linux, hence android too, cross compatible.

I think this would better suit your needs.

That would make two folders appear as one by pointing folder a at folder b.
Same principle as with the HOSTS file in Windows, and DNS lookups

Exactly. It works the same with files as well. You can create a symlink to a file in a folder, so when changes are made to the file in folder A, they are reflected in the file of folder B. It's basically the same file, but accessible from both folders. Each person would be able to make changes to that single file.
On the other hand, if you want just want a copy of the file that is completely independent of the changes made by the other user, then the Dropbox tutorial would probably be better suited...or you could just copy the file.

[Q] opening adobe illustator file?

I was just lazy and curious to know if anyone knew how to open illustrator .ai file in android? I just received an attachment via email and I just didn't want to hop on my PC.
Yes, I know how to open it. Too lazy to type it here though, apologies.

Yeah I guess I deserve that. I really did try to search for it online. But my wife and I just had a new baby and I am having a hard time getting out of bed to my Laptop, Desktop, my other Laptop, my other Desktop. I'm here in Bed with HTC Flyer. I love my Flyer.
Now I feel guilty
Just Google searched myself, couldn't anything, sorry.
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using XDA Premium App
I just had a brainwave (this doen't happen very often btw)
Install a Remote Desktop app on your Flyer, install client on laptop.
(I use splashtop for this).
You can now open file in Windows and view it on ypur precious.
(I realize this involves installing something on your laptop. Which means getting out of bed. Let your partner do that, it's quite easy, shout some instructions if it takes a long time)

if it's an .ai file, I guess you would be plain out of luck, it's a propitiatory format.
If it's .svg you have more luck on opening it, the default program should be able to open it

Ok this is possible!
Install Adobe Reader app on Android. Using a File Explorer (in my case ES File Explorer) then find the .ai file, tap on it and select OTHER when it asks what file type it is, then select Adobe Reader and it opens it up!! I'm on Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4.2 and only issue is that I have to rotate the screen before I open up the file as it won't rotate afterwards... But I believe this solves your problem and you won't either have to get out of bed or ask your partner to do anything
This conversation was the nicest thing that happened today
I love you guys
I know its an old topic but it still comes up in first line when searched with some keywords from google so im gonna post my way of doing it:
With any file explorer that can rename files, change the extension from .ai to .pdf and most of illustrator files can opened with pdf readers..
OK that was almost too simple.
Thank you for that ^^

[Q] Network File Transfers & Browser App?

can anyone tell me a app with which i can connect to the files that are on my file server
ES file explorer in android for example ... but webos?
thanks!
Interested in this as well..
if you know how to use ssh and sftp, that would be your best option, since there's an ssh server and sftp app in the preware app browser.
that preware app seems to have bricked my device :-( so first I have to fix that, but you are right, that was my first thought as well.... I will try that as soon as the device is fixed (long night :-( )
[Q] Network File Transfers
Anyone know an app or method for transferring files over to the Touchpad? The actual file, not just streaming video or whatnot. I picked up a touchstone, so it would be cool not to have to plug wires in... ever.
I'm a similar boat but would actually be ok with just the ability to stream media from a windows file share.
Closest I've found but haven't tested is the following:
ugh I can't post external links
do a google search for webos xorg and it should be the 3rd link down titled: IOBox - PC File Syncing (xorg tools) - WebOS Internals
from what I see it's just a way to create a mountpoint to a windows CIFS share. Would be nicer if something like android's file expert existed.
To have a simple network browser on the Touchpad would make it 10x more usable.
that is one of the things webos lacks of :/
i cant tell my girlfriend to ssh onto the homeserver just to watch a movie or pictures.
maybe some dev could make an ugly but working app for that
with preware you can use ssh and sftp for cli transfer.
but a network file browser would be alot nicer imho

No, but you could set it up for her on the tablet so she just has to launch it and then set up and sftp client on her computer such as filezilla. After that, it's just a matter of dragging and dropping files into filezilla.

If you have sshd on your tablet, you can easily use a gui client on your computer to connect to it like filezilla.
I was hoping there was a convenient app for us lazy people...
Ah well, it's something. Thanks.

Yep, nothing really out there until someone writes one for it
is there any news or ideas?...does any one know the devs of ES file explorer ... is there such a huge difference between web os and android ...
.. 10 dollars for such an app from me
(having that app - I would not need any android ...)
I use this:
http://www.precentral.net/tbtransfer
still in alpha but good enough for small files. Not recommended for files >100Mb as it takes much longer compared to usb cable.
perfect, thanks.
is that any unsecure, not beeing protected in any way?...
I think it only works with computers connected on the same router.

I understand you are looking for an app, but I installed the uberkernel which supports mounting of remote shares. There is a good how to if you look on google but basically you update your kernel to uberkernal or f15c, install Internalz from preware, add a line to the file /etc/fstab, and execute a mount -a command in a command line. Now I am able to browse my network share and copy files back and forth. The only problem I ran into was that I was trying to mount a sub folder of my shared folder but you can only mount the shared folder itself. I went crazy trying to figure that one out when it was actually rather obvious...
Wifi file transfer
Is there an app for touchpad like ES File Explorer where you can transfer files to your desktop/tablet wirelessly through a local wifi network?
I use wifi media sync works perfect for me.
Cheers
John

Shortcut for Folders-Files on Home Screen

The Android OS (latest release 4.0.3 and all previous releases) is missing an important function which is found on a Windows PC. That is creating a shortcut on the Home Screen/Desktop pointing to a folder or a file. A shortcut enables a single press or mouse click to open a folder containing many files organized for a specific purpose. Without a shortcut function in the Android OS, you must open a File Manager app and then manually search for the folder or file that you want. This can be a frustrating process every time you want to open something.
The most common shortcut found on a Windows PC is for My Documents. Another shortcut many folks create is for a specific folder or file for a job/project.
The following process can be used on an Android phone or tablet.
I have found two FREE apps in the Market that will create a shortcut on the desktop. The first one is Linda File Manager which can be found here:
https://market.android.com/details?...xLDEsImNvbS5saW5kYWFuZG55LmxpbmRhbWFuYWdlciJd
In my example I will create a shortcut on the desktop for a folder called DOCUMENTS. The steps to create a shortcut for a folder are:
1. Open Linda File Manager. Notice the default directory which is /mnt/sdcard. If you wish to create a shortcut to an external storage you must change the path to /Removable (for ICS).
2. Long Press the folder that you want to create the shortcut for. In my example DOCUMENTS.
3. A popup menu will appear. Select Create shortcut. It’s that simple.
The second app that I found that will create a short on the desktop is File Expert. This FREE app can be found here in the Market:
https://market.android.com/details?...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInhjeGluLmZpbGV4cGVydCJd
In my example I will create a shortcut on the desktop for a folder called DOCUMENTS. The steps to create a shortcut for a folder are:
1. Open File Expert. Notice the default directory which is /mnt/sdcard. If you wish to create a shortcut to an external storage you must change the path to /Removable (for ICS).
2. Long Press the folder that you want to create the shortcut for. In my example DOCUMENTS.
3. A popup menu will appear. Select MORE. Next select Create shortcut on Desktop.
I am sure there are other apps that can do a similar function but I am not aware of them.
works in ES file explorer in the same way. Just go the the folder you want to create the shortcut to and long press.
Or Astro....works quite well too....
Thanks for the thread. I didn't realize there was the ability to do this. I use root explorer but cannot find a way with that program so I guess I will be using something else.

Your welcome. To me, this is a basic function that should be included in the OS. Maybe a future release of ICS will have it

HD File Manager also does the same. I believe it is better suited for a tablet screen as well. Makes good use of the space and a lot of great functionality.

Androids designers did kinda have a desire for looking at the file system to be kept to a minimum for users. That's why you see a file manager in Cyanogen Mod but not AOSP.
And ASUS gave us one with missing features lol.

I prefer File Manager HD (Honeycomb) for ALL of my file management stuff. It has an excellent BOOKMARKS section which allows me to point to my custom directories.
I am using the Linda File Manager ONLY to create shortcuts on the home screen.
Is there a way to make shortcut for a lan share?
+1 for ES File explorer
How do people make a shortcut to a file on their Desktop using ES File Explorer when using sftp or Windows share. Everyone seems to thinks it works just fine. The only thing I know to do is make folder shortcut.. which isnt what I want.
I didn't know that.
I am going to test it.
Thanks

I see that it says it's capable of doing it in the description, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. With ES it was so simple, I don't mind a little work, and I really enjoy CM other software. I would be so thankful If you could explain this process to me. Also, does it add it to the home page of the CM launcher? I would imagine they work together, I've got the cleaner, the battery doctor, security, the browser, the launcher(testing), and everything else is seamless. I really appreciate the help, I feel really stupid for not figuring it out.
Edit: I might have it, adding the PDF files as bookmarks, is that it? Where are the bookmarks now? Also, if any of that other software is pointless let me know? Thanks again!
Just for S&G I have a ZTE Zmax with KitKat 4.4.4

With ES all you have to do is long press the file you want, then when the options come up select more(bottom right side I think) and the is a choice to add to desktop. From there you can move that icon to any of your desktop screens. Hope that helps!

Conversion of png to jpg

Is there anyway to convert the files from png to jpg? I've tried renaming it, but it can't load, and izzit possible to change the default screen shots to jpg files instead?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
You cannot convert file format by simply changing extension. It will not change the file itself, only the name. If you are a Windows user you can simply get Picasa from Google (it’s free) or any other of a whole bunch of free picture managers and/or editors and convert all you want. Even basic Paint has an option to “Save as…” and you can choose a format. But you have to convert, not only rename the file.

I found "File Converter Free" at Play Store. But it will upload your file to cloud, convert it and download back to phone. I do not like this kind of solutions to be honest. And I haven’t found any software that would do the conversion on the phone. Sorry
