Verizon vs Nexus - Have we crossed the end of the line? - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

So I believe there will probably not be a Nexus on Verizon ever again? Thanks to their dickishness (that's a new word!) and their ineptitude of pushing out vetted firmware from El Goog in a timely fashion with the Galaxy Nexus, I think Google has gone in a direction where they have 100% control over the software of their Nexus and "Google Play Edition" phones. And since working with Verizon implies giving them some control for the sake of making the device play ball with their CDMA network, their excellency, El Goog, has I believe, forsaken us!!!
Which all brings me to the point I want to make: So, I need to leave Verizon if I want a Nexus at some point in my life? Ah poopey! I am off contract currently and I don't intend to start a new contract with Verizon. Unfortunately the only other competitive option, price wise, is T-mobile's contract-less option. My current setup with Verizon is pretty good price wise as I am on a shared plan with my bro and he can't make the jump to T-mobile as they suck in his area and are okay in mine. Still Verizon's network is the best here too..
Thanks Verizon for having caught us all at our balls! So unfair you guys!
P.S: On a side note, will we ever have a decent 4 inch/4.3 inch device again? At least let us not cross over to the 5 inch territory. I personally want to go to Samsung/HTC/Motorola HQ and smash the brains of those idiots who think the bigger the better! Sheesh. 5 inches is too much for a stupid phone!

Promising but I will think twice before buying a Motorola phone again. I had a Droid X2 and it was such a buggy little thing and worst of all the bootloader is so thoroughly locked down that there was no respite even from CM10 due to not being able to flash a new kernel. I will think more than twice before I buy another Motorola, but hopefully others make good 4" or at least 4.3" phones.

I wouldn't let the moto brand fool you with the upcoming MotoX its basically a Moto nexus. definitely looks pretty solid. I said I wasn't going to go HTC again after HTC blew off the Inc2 ICS update, but here I am again, sitting on a phone that's going to be forgotten. at least give us the f*cking kernel source so someone else can build it

Right on... If this MotoX is basically a Nexus phone I will be very pleased. Motorola has pretty decent hardware but they are notorious for locking down their phones. And the Droid X2 that I initially had was one lousy phone. It will be a plus if this is indeed a Nexus phone and has unlockable bootloader and stuff..

we'll if you're staying on Verizon you should already prepare for a locked bootloader I think by now that should go unsaid lol

If Verizon can snoop my calls to their heart's content, then the least they can do is hand me my bootloader keys
I will eventually have to move to a more Android friendly carrier, not a "Droid™" friendly one... But alas, Verizon have a stranglehold on my privates, just because they have arguably the best network.. Thanks dudes... </sarcasm>

Droid Eris November 6, 2009 - May, 2010
That seems a bit short. I'm still happy with my purchase and hope this doesn't stop HTC from supporting it later on (I know it won't be soon) and that the devs may lose interest... Oh well. Maybe i'll scrap some cash together and just grab a desire when it comes out... who knows.
**Sorry for the poor title. I didn't catch it til it was too late.**
it's really all verizon's fault, they NEVER promoted the eris, and if you went in there wanting to buy one they would push the droid on you like no tomorrow.
hopefully this doesnt stop them from releasing the 2.1 OTA update to the general public, it will really help development along for us. Someday, when my eris dies I will upgrade (damn that incredible looks so good...) but until that day, I dont regret a single thing about it. except for installing leak, good thing a got a replacement though
It always seemed to me like the Eris has been advertised as Verizon's cheaper (even free for a lot of us) alternative to the Droid, and it did it's job well.
With the Incredible and Nexus One and all of the other phones (probably) coming out soon I'd expect the Droid to take the Eris' place in the lineup, like a "Buy a new HTC Incredible and get a Motorola Droid FREE" kind of deal.
ah.... oh well...
Looks like I will be upgrading soon... and paying the full price too lol, since I JUST started my contract on November 2009... oh well technology comes and goes.. and I'll have a new testing device!

Why would you upgrade that quick? The eris still has quite a few miles left in her. Early adopters can be very annoying sometimes. I have a friend (kind of) that buys a new macbook everytime there is a refresh. Drives me bat**** crazy to pay several hundred dollars more for something that does only a little more than the old one...

We all know technology changes daily be it hardware or software or whatever...
Cell phones, pda's ect are particularly susceptible as they are market driven and manufacturers are always trying to come out with the "Next Big Thing".
Hell the moto droid is now available on several websites for 20 bucks on a new 2 year...Letstalk.com etc...
Being a former 8 year blackberry user I can say this for Android at least theyre not just putting a new facade over a dated os\ui . So long as my eris doesnt melt down at the end of life date I'm good. Also so long as you're a VZW customer you'll get support for your device even if it is minimal.
I always felt the Eris was kind of an afterthought, the way they marketed it.

It's just a thought for now... I haven't totally decided but I will wait and see what the HTC incredible or whatever VZW comes out with, has to offer... if its something like an amazingly fast phone I'll probably get it.. if not I will stay with the Eris.. I don't hate the Eris, I think it is one amazing phone
plus I'd still be on here [XDA] using the Eris for testing stuff, helping out as much as I can..
looking at the incredible's spec sheet though, it's really worth the upgrade, i mean... it literally DOUBLES most of the specs, the re resolution of the screen is 480x800... the eris' screen is 480 in LENGTH, that's pretty impressive. Will i get the incredible? if i had the money, which i dont, so i will stay with my eris for as long as I deem fit, because honestly, it's a damn good phone for what it's worth.
and what about in six more months after that and they double the specs on the incredible

exactly... I will see when i comes out what people are saying first.. and the eris is an amazing phone for the price. I really dont think you can beat the value.
After rocking an HTC Touch for 1.5 years, I bought a brand new Eris from someone and avoided a contract reset just a week ago. I think it's a great phone, and I have no regrets. I can upgrade anytime but I'm still on a very good Alltel contract so I want to hold out as long as I can before switching to a VZW plan. It does everything I need it to do.
Has anyone heard anything more about this? I'd like to know if it's actually going to happen or not. Although I'm sure if it is we'll find out soon.. I'd also like to know if they'd offer us an upgrade for free or at least half price. If they stop doing the phone completely I think they should at least offer us something. I'd love to upgrade to the Incredible if it was free or half price..
why would they give us a new phone simply because they've stopped selling it?
If you have to do a warranty replacement or anything like that, I'm sure there is a large multitude of backup units, and once those run out/they stop carrying those, verizon will simply replace it with a phone of equal value and hardware features like they always have done for discontinued phones.

I just read an article about the nexus one being scrapped. Thought you just another person complaining because they were impatient. I'll eat my words and apologize now.
yeah, the nexus one is pretty dead.
plagued by 3g problems, and low sales, the only thing to really look forward to in picking one up over another phone like the incredible is that it it's wireless N chipset miiiiiiiiiiight (big might) get support soon.
honestly, for the price you'd be better off getting an incredible and waiting for root to get vanilla-android.
and man, why do people hate sense ui so much? the only ONLY problem it has is how laggy it can get. and on the eris? honestly, I expected it when I bought it looking at the specs. but upgrading to 2.1 got rid of ALL the lag for me. I love the look and extra screens of sense.
and jebus... the incredible is rocking DOUBLE the cpu and ram hardware, using nearly the same rosie build as the eris. it will be faster then us on 2.1 out of the freaking box, and with root... you'll be blazing through apps like crazy.

Next Motorola/Google smartphone

So all the excitement between the new EVO LTE and S3 got me thinking about the next motorola phone. I know moto has a bad rep about locking the phones down hard and not having good customer relations. Google may make major changes as to how moto operates (think they will). I love the RAZR/RAZR Maxx look. And the most important thing for me is that its an American company, not one from Taiwan. This doesn't effect most people, but for me it is something I keep in consideration when buying just about everything.
Since Google now has control, I'm not so sure the phones to come will be locked so hard. Considering how Samsung and HTC are unlocking bootloaders now, and let's be honest...Android know's what we the people want. As much as I want the new EVO (I'd even be happy with the S3 :/ )....I think the next phone they develope is going to be badass. I hope that they at least jump off Verizons u know what and offer it on Sprint as well.
Just curious what anyone else thinks. It's hard to wait for something that might not happen the way I think/want. The EVO LTE is calling my name.
Should be the next nexus and i have a feeling its gonna be quad core and a 12mp camera minimum
This probably belongs in a different thread.

From what I remember, google only bought motorola for their patents. TBH I see the next nexuses from Samsung only.
I personally hope Samsung is taken off the nexus line. A nexus is supposed to be ahead of all other phones. When HTC made the nexus one, it was ahead of anything out at the time, and for a long time. If you look at the specs no phone was on par with it until the evo 4g and the epic. Samsung made the nexus s which came out a year and a half ago and its honestly crap. My mom has one and my epic works better than that on cm9. The last two Samsung nexus phones have not been so good. Even the gnex, being a good phone, doesn't have anything we haven't seen before. Moto or HTC should be the next nexus makers
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
For Google to have bought Motorola and not utilize it would be kind stupid. I'm not saying they should make something so good that others get pissed and actually start making they're own OS. But to use moto for their "nexus" line is a no brainer. And make it kinda special to say the least.
And if this thread does belong somewhere else, mod please...by all means. Just let me know where u put it. I just know by the badass new devices that have been/are to be released have me thinking of moving on and I assume others who haven't, are still possibly thinking. And as much as I have grown to love HTC, this could turn out to indeed be bigger then the new EVO and S3.....or maybe not?
There are a few remarks here that have me wondering/excited.

Correct, because Apple is suing and stealing everything else and Google is protecting their investments. Motorola apparently has some major patents on things that Apple does not like and wants.

HTC One Developer Series

This looks like an interesting idea... too little too late?
http://blog.htc.com/2013/03/htc-one-developer-edition/
I don't understand the concept of developer edition phones at all. They're never subsidized, so no one other than developers would even be interested, and the developers aren't interested because no one else has them. Samsung did that with the Verizon S3, and all the dev community did was give Samsung and Verizon a collective middle finger and crack the bootloader on the regular one.

pretty much - I don't know what the point really is either. Subsidize them through a carrier so you can have a warranty honored through the carrier and they'd be gold. However, it's interesting to see HTC focusing on "pleasing the developers" with hardware like this but not keeping up with support for "older" phones which us more important and truly "pleases the developers" at the same time.

I'm pretty sure that's still only in speculation stage, and that Verizon might turn around any day now and say they weren't going to get it after all.
Even if Verizon does get it, they'll probably gimp the specs and storage down, stick their Verizon branding all over it, and change the physical design just enough so that other HTC One accessories won't work with it.

Its officaly getting the One but they might just rename it to something with "Droid" in front of it.
The Dev edition is a cop out. It allows them to say look hackers, tinkerers, and general Android enthusiasts we offer an unlocked phone. That way when we say how come we have all these locked phones? They can simply point out the dev edition. That's all its for this way HTC can snuggle up nice and cozy with Verizon and its large network of users and reap profit but seem user friendly. Its a bunch of crap and I hope T-Mo gets better and more people buy into its system so that others need to compete with their structure for mobile. (A guy can dream right)
I like the One, first phone I've been excited about since the Rezound was announced.

Upcoming End of Life for the DNA?

Just looked for this device on Verizons website and it said "Available Online Only" meaning two things to me. One, they are selling through their stock. Two, something is coming around the corner, soon. Any speculation? I don't see a One in our future. Maybe another DNA variant?
There have been rumors of a "DNA 2," that's about all anyone knows.

With the moonshine S-OFF coming out, I see the DNA having a pretty long life in the "hardcore" smartphone user scene. It is a top of the line device, with fantastic hardware, and will be competitive for a while still, even with the ONE and speculated "DNA 2" coming out. At least, that is my guess.
EoL of the DNA at this point in time would be a bit weird.... it was release 11/2012 so idk how that would work out. There is already talks about the butterfly 2 and its said to be coming out in third qtr. As soon as that hits the market, we should see our next htc phone on verizon a month after or so.
Verizon may stop selling the device or whatever they choose. But after all the time I've referenced xda and came here I can pretty much guarantee that it is far from the eol on this and many other communities. And I highly doubt HTC will just drop it, I'm sure they saw what happened with Samsung and the s1s when they took forever to update anything.

Signed with the blood of my DNA
I absolutely love the device. I was with Sprint for nine years and finally broke down and switched. We, up until about 3-5 years ago didn't even have a Verizon presence in our state. They still even now only have about 10% of the market here so the LTE here is outstanding. Normally running 15-30 down and the same up. Enough of the history of Verizon in our state. I just picked this phone up several weeks ago when it had that Free coupon on the net. As I said I love the hardware and the software is meh, I would rather be running sense 5 on it, but for now, it is what it is, and with a custom launcher and a few miner tweaks it good for now. I had the very first Evo on Sprint and loved it for the short time I had it. After joining the rooting community though I purchased a Nexus S, followed by a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and a GS3 that was given to me. So I am very familiar with rooting devices and running custom everything on them. With my life story here now, my main concern is if they do end of life this phone there will not be any more devices going out so Verizon, HTC, and just the dev community will move on. Its a shame. This is a great phone. I have used the One extensively and there is little difference in the phones in the way that they run and I found it strange that everyone, or many people, in the community were pushing to see the One on Verizon. This is the One in many ways, and in several ways better. I think at this point Verizon is looking to ditch this device because of all the whoopla the One is causing and its sad. I don't plan on ditching this phone anytime in the near future either. Its just sad that this phone is so understated. Is it better than the One, no but awfully close. Is it better than the S4, in my personal opinion after spending a week with it, yes. Its definitely better than a good crop of the phones out now even with its age. I think until we hear of a new device to take its place Verizon would be smart to dump a smidge more money and re-advertise for this device dropping the price point to $150-99 on contract and breathe some life back into this device. When I went to switch over to Verizon, and I knew what I was there to get, the sales person mentioned at least three other devices that were no where near the quality of this device. So not only at the corporate level but the floor level this phone needs some love. I'm thinking its to late at this point but i am still glad I picked it up. I'm still happy with it as it is, although I am excited to get it rooted at some point, as this phone has huge potential. I'm not wanting to be the "glass is half empty" guy its just not looking promising at this point for our beloved DNA :'(
The HTC Thunderbolt got a full Android upgrade (2.3 to 4.0) over a year after Verizon stopped selling it, and the Droid Incredible got a maintainance update a few months back I believe. So even when Verizon stops selling it, it won't stop getting support for a while.
Look at what the rezound has pulled off, and in my opinion it was a great device, but nowhere near as nice as the DNA. EOL is as much a frame of mind as anything else in the development community and userbase. I still help out with rezound development and have some close friends and dev partners active so we spend a lot of sleepless nights working on software for users and tools for developers so they're able to offer more. I moved up to the DNA because I wanted too, but didn't leave the rezound behind. There's a lot of guys like me who tend to do that to help drive the spirit of android, and there's also guys who unlike me are true developers making things happen. The DNA is a really nice device and if the development and custom software minded community wants a device to thrive, it will thrive.

The first sign they wanted to phase out the DNA was the Free-with-2year promotion.
With the HTC One still completely unannounced on verizon (and all reps denying it vehemently), I'd have to guess that either HTC doesn't like how vzw handled their marketing or verizon made a yet-unannounced sweetheart deal with someone else. My money'd be on Samsung since verizon is really pimping their products.

Wow. I wonder if that means LATER this summer like August or sooner....?
I see a lot of DNA's coming up for sale soon.. Mine included !! Depends on the retail cost though..
Definitely got to voice my opinion on this. Had the rezound for a year and a half. For how much I used it, I needed an extended battery but overall. Great device and first really high resolution phone. I just got my DNA and love it. The rezound was lagging since the last update.
I think Verizon dropped the ball on the one. They are putting it out almost 5-6 months after its initial release. That's atrocious. As phone connoisseurs we all know something new will be out soon after that anyway.
I'm sticking with my DNA. I don't see the development dying down after moonshine is released. The one has some small upgrades (most are portable thanks to the people here). And screen size downgrade.
I'll wait for the next nice HTC device to upgrade.

I only say its stupid, which is probably not the right word, but its because they're placing a phone out months after its alternate carrier releases, meaning it'll be an older device releasing against newer devices, seems to counter what is normally done, release newer devices against newer devices. I thought I made that point clear, but maybe not, the joke with the gs7 or whatever must not have been clear enough.

I have no idea what's to come, but the last two years, HTC/Verizon has released something between Thanksgiving and Christmas (Rezound and DNA). At this point, I'll wait.

Looks like, for CDMA, its the G2, note 3 and thats pretty much it. The moto x is cool but I think the always listening feature (provided by a dedicated core) is a feature of the snapdragon 800 so most new phones should support it. Makes sense to wait until novemberish. Thank you.
Honestly, like a couple replies above.. I would wait... Typically a launch device will have some bugs and kinks to work out.. Plus, I agree that Verizon may still have something up their sleeve for later this year.. I think holding off until closer to Thanksgiving or even Christmas is a good plan... Plus, if you wait, and nothing comes about, chances are you can get the One for $149.99 or less perhaps on contract... You just never know with Verizon.
I think the One is a great device, but spec-wise, it's almost identical to the DNA.
I do like how the One is all aluminum though, it just has a really great feel in your hand. Buuuut, I really hate the lack of a capacitive recent apps button; I really dig the standard 3 button layout. I just wish more manufacturers went for the soft key layout. I've been really eyeballing that LG G2

Iam speculating/hoping that variant of butterfly s aka DNA2/DNA+ shows up during the holiday period over there

Selling the DNA for the One would not be worth it unless you want a smaller screen. The One may look prettier but the DNA has some better features IMO...larger screen, wireless charging, larger screen. Lol
I have used the One and just prefer the DNA. But to each their own.

A screen that large is just overkill IMO; I already can't reach my back button my DNA with my thumb. Fortunately, there is LMT launcher, which actually allows me to use my phone with one hand again :good:

Try a cm-based ROM with Pie.
As for the OP, just wait it out. I don't see a phone I really want yet. The DNA is reaching it's first birthday but it still is blazing fast and has a great screen, and as far as roms there are a bunch available. I also have an S4 and the speed difference is unnoticeable and the ROM selection is similar. The only thing it has over the DNA is the IR blaster and SD card which I don't even use. At this point upgrading will only get you higher benchmark scores but nothing you would notice in day to day use.
I doubt Verizon is getting another HTC phone this year. I'm thinking they were originally going to skip the One and go DNA2 put there's no need for both phones. Verizon is no about giving us options.
Don't forget besides the larger screen with an already rediculous PPI the DNA has an 8mp camera that's capable of taking incredible photos.
With the Sense5 ROMs well be getting tomorrow we'll just be missing "boomSound".
I am thinking of selling mine for the nexus 5/4+. It is rumored to be available on all carriers, I just hope Google puts their foot down and doesn't let Verizon eff it all up like the Gnex.
And who knows, since it will be holiday time you might still get 250 for the DNA.

I still love my DNA but I also really like the One. Although I don't like the One enough to sell my DNA. Don't really see a point. Just gonna ride my DNA out for the remainder of the contract and get whatever kickass phone comes out when its upgrade time.

I am ALL over that 5.9" behemoth! Great to hear there is "confirmed" rumor by a very reliable source.
You are up for porting a Sense 4+ based ROM to it though...right? LOL JK I'll have to learn to live with Blinkfeed I suppose.
And hopefully Moonshine and/or RevOne will still work for that "thing" we all like to do to our phones!

They just launched 3 new moto droids at once and will have the moto x soon (probably about as long of a delay as the One) so they have no problem over saturating.
With the impending 4.3 update with sense 5 the dna will be a totally different phone. So I would wait for the update then wait til the phone losses that new phone feel and then see what's available to upgrade to
