Next Motorola/Google smartphone - HTC EVO 3D

So all the excitement between the new EVO LTE and S3 got me thinking about the next motorola phone. I know moto has a bad rep about locking the phones down hard and not having good customer relations. Google may make major changes as to how moto operates (think they will). I love the RAZR/RAZR Maxx look. And the most important thing for me is that its an American company, not one from Taiwan. This doesn't effect most people, but for me it is something I keep in consideration when buying just about everything.
Since Google now has control, I'm not so sure the phones to come will be locked so hard. Considering how Samsung and HTC are unlocking bootloaders now, and let's be honest...Android know's what we the people want. As much as I want the new EVO (I'd even be happy with the S3 :/ )....I think the next phone they develope is going to be badass. I hope that they at least jump off Verizons u know what and offer it on Sprint as well.
Just curious what anyone else thinks. It's hard to wait for something that might not happen the way I think/want. The EVO LTE is calling my name.

Should be the next nexus and i have a feeling its gonna be quad core and a 12mp camera minimum

This probably belongs in a different thread.

From what I remember, google only bought motorola for their patents. TBH I see the next nexuses from Samsung only.

I personally hope Samsung is taken off the nexus line. A nexus is supposed to be ahead of all other phones. When HTC made the nexus one, it was ahead of anything out at the time, and for a long time. If you look at the specs no phone was on par with it until the evo 4g and the epic. Samsung made the nexus s which came out a year and a half ago and its honestly crap. My mom has one and my epic works better than that on cm9. The last two Samsung nexus phones have not been so good. Even the gnex, being a good phone, doesn't have anything we haven't seen before. Moto or HTC should be the next nexus makers

For Google to have bought Motorola and not utilize it would be kind stupid. I'm not saying they should make something so good that others get pissed and actually start making they're own OS. But to use moto for their "nexus" line is a no brainer. And make it kinda special to say the least.

And if this thread does belong somewhere else, mod please...by all means. Just let me know where u put it. I just know by the badass new devices that have been/are to be released have me thinking of moving on and I assume others who haven't, are still possibly thinking. And as much as I have grown to love HTC, this could turn out to indeed be bigger then the new EVO and S3.....or maybe not?
There are a few remarks here that have me wondering/excited.

Correct, because Apple is suing and stealing everything else and Google is protecting their investments. Motorola apparently has some major patents on things that Apple does not like and wants.

coming from a nexus one

Honestly and seriously ...I've been with the nexus one for almost 2 years and looking into an upgrade.
I don't want the Galaxy nexus or the sg2.

I was initially looking to get the galaxy nexus, after all the delays and needing a new phone as the old one died, went for the galaxy note and am loving it even though it's still on gingerbread. Rooted it, loaded a lite rom, speedier kernel, got rid of most of the Samsung crap and just sitting and waiting for an ics build to pop up.

Not really impressed by the development progress of the razr ..not sure if its a good idea?

The phone has only been out for a month. It takes a bit to get some momentum, but honestly, I'm loving the RAZR with a simple root, and some small tweeks.
I'm looking forward to ICS, but am more than happy with the phone as is, and could be pleased for a few months while the development catches up.
The lack of perceived development is due to two things IMO...
1. Locked boot-loader
2. Another great phone (SGN) being released at the same time.
Motorola really messed up by locking this boot-loader while another very "open" phone was being released around the same time and by looking at the forums it's quite obvious. Considering the above though, the development here has been pretty decent thanks to a bunch of dedicated pro's.

According to what I've read, the Nexus, while on Verizon, the contract is actually under Google's control. Hence, the unlocked bootloader. It was Google's requirement that the phone come to the market open.
Motorola, on the other hand, is restricted like HTC & other Samsung devices on Verizon's network. HTC originally stated they would release a tool, but then Verizon forbade it, and the Rezound was fully locked as well.
Samsung's phones are almost always locked down, it just so happens they're easier to hack, but they don't support development very well, so even with it unlocked, you end up with very poor support.
HTC never releases their source code (at least from what I've read) so it's hard to get a working custom rom that's 100% on their phone.
I've owned 3 Motorola Droid phones, and the last two have been great for development. My mom also owns another one in the Droid X, and it too was easy to flash, and had plenty of support from the community due to the source codes being available.
If I can teach my mom how to flash a custom ROM on her phone, it can't be THAT hard to do, and the support I get when she has an issue, is better than Verizon offers in store.
As for Motorola messing up, maybe it's on timing, but really it's not their fault the phone came locked down. They actually were pushing for open devices first, by offering the OG Droid, and then offering the Xoom with an unlocked bootloader, and announcing it wanted to unlock bootloaders in late 2011.....it's just Verizon shoved it back in their face.
So if anything blame Verizon for this.
hmm, my problem is that i really don't want a Samsung phone. The SG2 is will become outdated and most ppl have that (i want to be different).
I've thought of the Note, i like big, but found it unpractical.
What else? Lenovo?
Any new phones around the corner? What's after the Razr?

I'm a keyboard guy myself, so I'm getting ready for the Droid 4 which should be coming out any day now, and am probably going to give my RAZR to my wife, as she likes the screen, and her OG droid is getting really long in the tooth.
After that, there's a new HTC "Zeta" was rumored recently as well as the "ville".
Really, you kind of have to wait till CES for more phones after Christmas. CES is Jan 10-14th, and there will be quite a few new phones that are announced there.
I am also coming from a N1, been using it for 2 years. No big problems except the lack of internal memory (even thought I'm using S2E, but still...) and couldn't play much games on the phone...
The Razr looks very nice! The CPU is the same one as the GN, but with much better designs and build. So I also seriously consider this phone too. But as a top of the line phone the graphic seems a little weak, even compare to SGS2(which is out almost half year now). So I'm a llittle worry about this....Maybe we will have to keep using our trusty N1 at least till the end of CES in Jan.
I agree with garlick2. The first thing I did was to root this phone. However, this is the first Android phone that I have had that I have been happy with right out of the box. I have made a few minor customizations, but nothing major.

Where to go after here? (New Phone Q)

So I have been thinking about what to new when I can get a new phone which should be able to happen in the next couple months. While I have like the 3D, I think it was a mistake to get something so different. None of the problems are because of the devs which have been great as always and I have been impressed at what has been done with as many problems as they have run into. So to end my monologue, I was hoping to get some advice from people with knowledge.
Lets pretend that every phone company had a phone that was exactly alike. Same specs, same look, same everything. Everything that is except the stuff that makes the companies different. So HTC has Sense on the phone. Samsung has touchwiz Etc. Who would you buy this phone from and why?
Basically trying to find out if there is one company that is easier to build ROMs for or if there is something one company does better than another. I have been on HTC since the Hero days and at one point loved Sense. Now though I feel Android has caught up with Sense in the overall function and feel of the phone. But I am still torn. If I leave Sense, there is no getting to try it out again later. But I also have never really used Touchwiz enough to know if there is something I am missing.
Maybe this turns into nothing of a question and it ends up being stupid that I asked it here. But what I am hoping is that I will learn something new about who actually makes the best phones to root.
I guess I should add. I realize I could possibly go the route of a Nexus but again I would be left with only vanilla Android. No chance to try Sense or something different. Is it worth going the Nexus route for all the ease that it will probably have but with no chance of a different look?
That's where I'm heading.
I'm done with HTC and their lack of support.

Yeah, after having the Pre before the 3VO, I'm wondering if I should go the Nexus route, too. It's the only thing that seems supported for the length of a contract. That's what gets me the most. If you buy a phone at release date, there should be FULL support (updates, etc) for the length of your contract, or at least have the knowledge of when support is expected to end. So where the M7 is looking promising, will it turn into a Pre or a 3VO? So now I don't know what to with my APR upgrade...
Same here been with HTC since the Hero. I think I am going to part ways though, doesn't seem to me that HTC is doing anything innovative or ground shattering for me to stay with them.
I'm probably going to upgrade to the Galaxy S4 when its released just to try something else.

That's probably what I'll wind up doing. I love Sense. The size of the One is probably the max I want to carry around. A Note is like carrying a tablet in your pocket <insert joke here  > For some, that's cool, but after TWO digitzer replacements, I gotta be careful. Only other thing on the radar right now, for me, is the Optimus G, and I don't know a thing about its UI...
I don't know what's next for me but unless Sprint drastically upgrades their network in the next couple months then my next phone definitely won't be written Sprint.
Wimax is almost worthless these days. I can't hold a Wimax signal, even sitting at my desk. My city still hasn't even been mentioned for Sprint's LTE, and Sprint's 3G is not even usable around here.
So whatever my next phone turns out to be, it will probably be on T-Mobile this summer.
I'm pretty much done with HTC too. After getting screwed with this locked down Evo 3d that they refuse to support, I'm not buying another HTC phone. I'm either going with Samsung, LG, or Motorola.
There are way too many launchers out there for anyone to be worried about Sense or Touchwiz or whatever.
I have too talked with my parents about carrier switching. Sprint is nice, but... eh. If I stay, GNEX is the only way to go, if I leave, it'll be to T-Mobile and I'll be getting either a Gnex or a Sony Device, both great deving supporters.!

Galaxy S2 gets JB! WTH!

At least samsung has made the effort to get JB to S2....
It's no wonder that allot of us are feeling the sting of no JB on the rezound...

I think even worse is the fact the Droid Bionic is suppose to be getting JB. Wow.
It's because the S2 was Samsung's flagship.. The Rezound is HTC's redheaded stepchild on VZW. Simple enough?
Motorola and Samsung are both updating phone over a year older than the Rezound and HTC is wondering why they are losing more and more customers cause instead of updating phones they are making you buy new phones to get the next operating system. I won't be getting the Next HTC phone for Verizon I am hoping the Google/Motorola phone is real cause that is the route I wanna go.

Ya, I really want the HTC one, but I just can't do it after their lack of support for the rezound.
If the one isn't as big as they need it to be,they will move on quickly to another device. They can't afford to support more than one device at a time I don't think.

SII is getting 4.2 as well. Always get Samsung for good support. Even Ace II is getting 4.2. HTC are terrible on support. Samsung or Google Nexus are the best for updates
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy SIII LTE GT-I9305 using XDA Premium HD
I remember a time when Samsung really wasn't that good with updates, boy have times changed. I am close to wanting to drop the Rezound for the Maxx HD, just for the better battery life and better update support(at least so it seems), but the screen and size of the Rezound really has me(it's pretty much the only HD screen on a 4.3in device). HTC is really testing our patients I think.
I was just saying this the other day... Joke's on us I guess. Should have just dealt with moto or samsung and not had the best phone out to get updates. HTC makes beautiful phones but I'm kind of sick of sense and no/really slow updates. I don't see why they don't give us sense 4 and jb. If they did I might change my mind. But we don't even have the latest ICS and sense 3.6 or w/e is worse than 3.5 imo lol. I feel basically forced to get a GS4 even if I didn't sort of want one.. At least I know it will be supported for a couple of years or more. Samsung used to have a bad track record too, now HTCs is even worse than Samsungs was.
Support? We don't need no stinkin' support.
We have great dev's here, like Snuzzo, iHWO, shrike, and Neo just to name a few. A development community even a quarter as good as this one would still be far better than any manufacturer support, save Nexus devices for obvious reasons (and even then, if you're tied to a carrier you're screwed for OTA).

I'm not saying our devs aren't great. But if we had jelly bean from HTC imagine how tits everything would be then... And it would have saved everyone a ton of work just to get something to boot. But no... HTC gnf.
Edit: or even a better sense ICS update for that matter, Smh lol
I agree that HTC needs to support its past phones, a Dev community is only as good as leaks or full releases from the company itself. CM is bad ass cause goggle releases the code and the Dev add or take away things that they like. But as far as giving us Jelly bean on the Rezound with everything working would still take help from HTC. As you can see by the stand still in the development section progress stands still without leaks, OTAs and most important the code itself from HTC. Unless having less phones will give them time to concentrate on updating past phones I don't think HTC will update the Rezound any further. I am hoping July will be the month I upgrade to the Xphone if its real but we'll find that in May hopefully

A high end nexus for Verizon would be a dream come true. Even if verizon didn't sell it directly
I have a Rezound and a RAZR. With the 4.1.2 update for the RAZR it only seemed to perform slightly faster then the Rezound with 4.0.3
Even so, I still don't really use the RAZR for much of anything at all(it's just a backup phone).

Once my upgrade is here - I'm gone off the Rezound! I have a company iPhone 5 and honestly the battery way outperforms all HTC phones I've owned. Here's to hoping the GS4 has great battery!
An HTC rep shared this article because it says what he can't say. I think there's a lot of truth in it. At least the points logic out well to me.
My opinion is Verizon makes decisions about updates based on what is selling best and Sammy is selling like hotcakes, so they are showing all kinds of love to Samsung. Motorola sucks but they are Googles kid, so they get love. HTC killed themselves by spending too much time being quietly brilliant and making 35 different models. If they kept it simple and spent some money on TV ads, it might have been different... Still might, time will tell.

sooo....besides the risk of info being leaked....y doesnt google release the code to Samsung, HTC, ect, have it all tested...and have everything ready to be deployed and THEN announce the new update like Apple?
We get leaks usually though when manufacturers finish their updates... Even those leaks are really slow or never show up. So I'm still blaming manufacturers. Lol

I know everyone is saying "just ignore them" yadda yadda yadda. I disagree and here is why:
HTC isn't Apple or Samsung. Several reviewers have called the HTC One the "hail mary" before they bite the dust, and they may be right. If we want to see HTC keep building these amazing devices, we have to educate in order to make a sell in order to keep them in business. We are the nerds that friends and family go to when they have a question about their phones (and computers too, of course). They may say something like "well the Apple commercial said the iPhone can do THIS!" or "the Samsung commercial said the Galaxy can do THAT". We know what ALL phones are capable of doing because it's our passion. Everyone, at least in the HTC forums, know that our phone can trump nearly every feature on both the iPhone 5 and the GS4, thus, we need to show off our phones capabilities whenever we are hanging out with our friends or family.
TL;DR: If the HTC One doesn't sell well, it may be the last HTC phone ever. Show off your phone and keep them in business! :good:

So, basically, your argument is that you should be allowed to bash other phones and cause random flame wars just because it might, somehow, convince someone to buy a HTC phone. That's never going to work.
1. You're going to be arguing/disputing/whatever with a fanboy. Not someone who doesn't know anything about mobile hardware and the difference between a "Galaxy" and a "HTC," but a full-blown fanboy. They're never going to buy whatever phone you're forcing them to consider.
2. Even if it was someone who wasn't a fanboy, you arguing and trying to make them see that your phone is the god of all phones isn't exactly going to make them buy it--if anything they're less likely, because since you were so militantly trying to justify why anybody would buy your phone it would seem that there is some buyer's remorse, at least in their eyes.
3. Like I said in my other post, flame wars do NOTHING. They don't affect overall phone sales and they don't prove anything. There are probably thousands if not millions of iSheep who believe iPhones are by far the best phones and will take that opinion to their grave. Doesn't change the fact that Apple's losing market share and that Apple's stock is in a downward spiral.
But if you really want to go ahead and be a fanboy, go ahead. I really don't care. Just don't let it get in the way of real discussion. Also, it'd be great if you didn't automatically assume everything Samsung makes is crap just because it's a Samsung. Not everyone shares your opinion. I personally hate Apple but I have to admit the iPhone 5 is a pretty good phone. It's just not something I would like. Just a suggestion.

Upcoming End of Life for the DNA?

Just looked for this device on Verizons website and it said "Available Online Only" meaning two things to me. One, they are selling through their stock. Two, something is coming around the corner, soon. Any speculation? I don't see a One in our future. Maybe another DNA variant?
There have been rumors of a "DNA 2," that's about all anyone knows.

With the moonshine S-OFF coming out, I see the DNA having a pretty long life in the "hardcore" smartphone user scene. It is a top of the line device, with fantastic hardware, and will be competitive for a while still, even with the ONE and speculated "DNA 2" coming out. At least, that is my guess.
EoL of the DNA at this point in time would be a bit weird.... it was release 11/2012 so idk how that would work out. There is already talks about the butterfly 2 and its said to be coming out in third qtr. As soon as that hits the market, we should see our next htc phone on verizon a month after or so.
Verizon may stop selling the device or whatever they choose. But after all the time I've referenced xda and came here I can pretty much guarantee that it is far from the eol on this and many other communities. And I highly doubt HTC will just drop it, I'm sure they saw what happened with Samsung and the s1s when they took forever to update anything.

Signed with the blood of my DNA
I absolutely love the device. I was with Sprint for nine years and finally broke down and switched. We, up until about 3-5 years ago didn't even have a Verizon presence in our state. They still even now only have about 10% of the market here so the LTE here is outstanding. Normally running 15-30 down and the same up. Enough of the history of Verizon in our state. I just picked this phone up several weeks ago when it had that Free coupon on the net. As I said I love the hardware and the software is meh, I would rather be running sense 5 on it, but for now, it is what it is, and with a custom launcher and a few miner tweaks it good for now. I had the very first Evo on Sprint and loved it for the short time I had it. After joining the rooting community though I purchased a Nexus S, followed by a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and a GS3 that was given to me. So I am very familiar with rooting devices and running custom everything on them. With my life story here now, my main concern is if they do end of life this phone there will not be any more devices going out so Verizon, HTC, and just the dev community will move on. Its a shame. This is a great phone. I have used the One extensively and there is little difference in the phones in the way that they run and I found it strange that everyone, or many people, in the community were pushing to see the One on Verizon. This is the One in many ways, and in several ways better. I think at this point Verizon is looking to ditch this device because of all the whoopla the One is causing and its sad. I don't plan on ditching this phone anytime in the near future either. Its just sad that this phone is so understated. Is it better than the One, no but awfully close. Is it better than the S4, in my personal opinion after spending a week with it, yes. Its definitely better than a good crop of the phones out now even with its age. I think until we hear of a new device to take its place Verizon would be smart to dump a smidge more money and re-advertise for this device dropping the price point to $150-99 on contract and breathe some life back into this device. When I went to switch over to Verizon, and I knew what I was there to get, the sales person mentioned at least three other devices that were no where near the quality of this device. So not only at the corporate level but the floor level this phone needs some love. I'm thinking its to late at this point but i am still glad I picked it up. I'm still happy with it as it is, although I am excited to get it rooted at some point, as this phone has huge potential. I'm not wanting to be the "glass is half empty" guy its just not looking promising at this point for our beloved DNA :'(
The HTC Thunderbolt got a full Android upgrade (2.3 to 4.0) over a year after Verizon stopped selling it, and the Droid Incredible got a maintainance update a few months back I believe. So even when Verizon stops selling it, it won't stop getting support for a while.
Look at what the rezound has pulled off, and in my opinion it was a great device, but nowhere near as nice as the DNA. EOL is as much a frame of mind as anything else in the development community and userbase. I still help out with rezound development and have some close friends and dev partners active so we spend a lot of sleepless nights working on software for users and tools for developers so they're able to offer more. I moved up to the DNA because I wanted too, but didn't leave the rezound behind. There's a lot of guys like me who tend to do that to help drive the spirit of android, and there's also guys who unlike me are true developers making things happen. The DNA is a really nice device and if the development and custom software minded community wants a device to thrive, it will thrive.

The first sign they wanted to phase out the DNA was the Free-with-2year promotion.
With the HTC One still completely unannounced on verizon (and all reps denying it vehemently), I'd have to guess that either HTC doesn't like how vzw handled their marketing or verizon made a yet-unannounced sweetheart deal with someone else. My money'd be on Samsung since verizon is really pimping their products.

Wow. I wonder if that means LATER this summer like August or sooner....?
I see a lot of DNA's coming up for sale soon.. Mine included !! Depends on the retail cost though..
Definitely got to voice my opinion on this. Had the rezound for a year and a half. For how much I used it, I needed an extended battery but overall. Great device and first really high resolution phone. I just got my DNA and love it. The rezound was lagging since the last update.
I think Verizon dropped the ball on the one. They are putting it out almost 5-6 months after its initial release. That's atrocious. As phone connoisseurs we all know something new will be out soon after that anyway.
I'm sticking with my DNA. I don't see the development dying down after moonshine is released. The one has some small upgrades (most are portable thanks to the people here). And screen size downgrade.
I'll wait for the next nice HTC device to upgrade.

Releasing so late after the other carriers is kind of a stupid move, but honestly if you have vzw and want the one, you're stuck waiting anyways. Or get the gs7 or whatever that Sammy brings out a month after that.

I don't see how its stupid. When the iPhone 4 released on Verizon, they had the fixed bezel around it vs atts 4

I only say its stupid, which is probably not the right word, but its because they're placing a phone out months after its alternate carrier releases, meaning it'll be an older device releasing against newer devices, seems to counter what is normally done, release newer devices against newer devices. I thought I made that point clear, but maybe not, the joke with the gs7 or whatever must not have been clear enough.
