Do scratches in lens effect photo quality? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone seem to have unfortunately picked up some small scratches around the lens, mainly in the black border but nothing in the middle. Will that effect its performance?

Judge for yourself. Here's a picture with my scratched up lens cover:

And here it is without the lens cover:

Yes it will. [Edit] it could. A scratch will [Edit] could distribute light through the lens in an improper way if on the outer part of it. Instead of light going directly into the lens it will do that and come through it in a sideways like action. Making the picture look washed out. As seen in the picture above.
I do wish we had a way to cover the lenses until we are ready to snap pictures. Like some manual slide apparatus. Or even one that opens when the camera app is activated. Would be kind of cool.
But, I would say just keep your phone in a case and your pockets as clean and clear as possible.
And like my wife had found out the hard way, do not leave the phone unprotected at the beach. Put it in a ziplock bag or something of that nature. Any way, just my 2¢ for the day.

I don't like cases, so I just ordered a new back plate from ebay

The big problem with cases is that many of them seem to cause a problem with the volume rocker in the s3. Are you sure about the reduction in quality, I don't think the black border around the lens captures any light, and I haven't noticed anything.

did you see my pics?

Yep, but the position (the black border) the scratch may make a difference, here's a image to illustrate.

Exactly. "the scratch may make a difference" . It won't always make a difference. It all depends on the depth and angle of the scratch. And how light is hitting it.

My pic above is with a lens cover that doesn't have any deep scratches at all, just a lot of very little ones, making the lens cover essentially matte, scattering the light, which results in that blurry pic

I have just taken some tests seconds ago against another device and they seems to be nothing wrong. So, I guess this problem is finished.

A couple of days ago I dropped my phone... there now is a small scratch on the lens, which unfortunately is also seen in my pictures. Any way to remove/fill the scratch? I've heard people say that toothpaste might work, but I'm not sure... any other advice?

I actually made a research about this issue and all expert photographers say the same thing: a scratch in the front element won't effect your photo quality in a noticeable manner. So I think your problem is bigger, probably inside the camera unit. I'm no expert so ask someone else.

I'm sorry but as a hobbiest photographer, I would disagree with this. That's why we have lens caps.
A scratch on the lens or anything transparent that covers the lens can very easily and drastically reduce photo quality. The images on page 1 of this thread show that.
Photos are taken by passing light through the lens. Scratches disturb the light

Sure? I have checked the Internet and all I read was that scratches don't do much.
Here is some links:

Yes I'm sure. They're talking about a single or a couple of minor scratches. And the first article actually does say they DO affect the quality (although not as much as some people might think). And again, I refer you to the images that show the affect of scratches on the S3.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

Since I got the scratch on my lens in certain light conditions(especially direct sunlight) it creates an annoying blurry lens flare. If I tilt my camera horizontally or vertically the blurriness stays in the same position. I'm sure it's the scratch...

Its worth noting that on the s3 the lens isn't exposed. Its underneath a glass cover

Is there a way to replace the lens cover incase of a damaged one ? Like Officially through the service centre or by some other way ?

Green pics in low light...w/o flash!

Anyone else?
Just got mine and every other issue is non existing except a greenish/yellowish tint with a purple hue around the corners in low level lighting. ( I guess it heats up a bit and there is a microscopic chip missing on the very edge of the cam lens), but other than that, the phone is flawless ......so far....

I've been pondering it, but I've seen so many other people with the green pic issue, that i figured it was widespread, and would end up with another with the same problem anyways. I have no other problems, except the light leakage, as you mentioned. Any other minor bugs I had at first went away after a factory reset or two. Anyone have any idea if the green pic issue is hardware or software related?

And all of them have pretty bad light leakage/bad seal at the bottom..
Kinda makes me wonder who the **** quality checked these phones.. and why they still have a job :/

You do have a 1 year manufacturing warranty which you can use multiple times if needed (to get refurbished phones only). By calling sprint and asking to speak with "advanced device exchange/tech department"

I'm on my 3rd phone. My first o e had the green pictures. And one the pictures were blotchy and the camera lenses were not even close to being aligned right. 3rd one seems ok so far. They all had light leakage including the current one.

Painting my battery door

Hey guys-
I am in progress of painting my extended battery setup (door+case) white. If I end up liking it, I will be painting the hard plastic part of my otterbox commuter white. I have chosen to use White Plasti Dip paint. This creates a plasticy spray that flexes, bends, and is durable. It won't crack and I can peel it off if I decide I don't like it white anymore. It is also pretty grippy. The can came to $9.11 w/ tax. They also offer this paint in red and black as well as a clear gloss. I will post pics of my other stuff as it dries/I paint it. But it took 5 coats to get the door looking nice so it takes awhile.
Pics of my progress:

That is the stuff. Stencil designs would be hard. Unlike regular spray paint, you MUST peel any tape off before it dries. So you would have to do a coat, pull the tape off, retape, recoat, etc. This is because it would peel up the plastidip when you pulled the tape off.

Id like to see a phone about the size and shape of the S3..
with the screen on front to act as normal....
THEN unfold it twice....Like a tri-fold wallet..
The existing "front" screen would flip to the rear.. and exposing 3 new screens making up a larger 16:10 display.
tripling the screen size of the 'closed' phone.
Of course, the 'closed' phone's rear cam with flash would become the new front cam and vice-a-versa.

One of the "possibilities" they showed in the video was something just like that, except it only opened bi-fold. Still an awesome idea, I would just be worried about durability. Anything folded and unfolded 100 times a day is going to wear out

Can't wait for samsung to make a full 10" rollable flexi sheet w/Wacom digitizer integration.
I'm concerned about reliability in a flexible device as well.
I suspect they may use a "wrap " feature first, using abstract edges and multi screen functions.
A flexible display wrapped around ....say ....a cylinder, would be simply badazz....
Possibilities are indeed endless ....g

I have to agree that their is definately some concern with flexi screens, and development\. But can you also imagine the galaxy pebble but phone size, and oval shapped fully wrapped all the way around with a screen? That would also be sick.

I would have to agree, I haven't been too impressed with the camera on my One. I think it is hard for many/me to look beyond the megapixel count, as it tends to get grainy way sooner than a lot of other higher megapixel cameras on the market. I have liked it in low light however, but not as big of a difference as I had expected. Here are some of my shots.
I've been impressed. My shots above were night shots in Boston, and a really quick macro of a robin's nest. )she has been laying an egg a day).
I think once we get new update, 1.29 photos will improve more.

I can confirm for you guys as a fellow Tmobile user that the camera is MUCH better after the 1.29 update. Currently I'm running Trickdroid 5.2.1 and the camera results seem to be greatly improved over stock Tmobile firmware....
Here's a few shots I took in the last couples of days.
The camera seems good but nothing amazing. The two things that impressed me most was the macro (coaster picture) and very quick shutter speed (the car in that one picture was going at least 30mph and there's no blur at all)

Two of the pictures were compromised by very bright lights that negatively affected the exposure of the rest of the shot. Not very representative, honestly.
I guess I do not see much of a difference between normal (1st) and macro, this was also in relatively low light (still impressive) but I am not completely impressed with macro mode at all, much better on my Amaze.

I agree! Love the pictures, but you can't always be at the perfect distance from your subject... which means I would usually crop my picture afterward. But there is not much cropping I can do with these. I knew this before buying the phone, but it's still disappointing.
But.... coming from the Nexus 4... I am happy for this trade off. I may have been able to zoom and crop, but I was very unhappy with the inconsistent image quality and hated the flash because it was way too bright, in my opinion, and ruined quite a few pictures. I just missed too many moments, because you can't always say "Hold on, let me take another one."

successfully removed screen protector!!

It took a hour but I removed it. With a flat Stanley knife. After that with nail cleaner I removed the glue. Now I have clear glass with not finger stains.

The screen protector is a thin plastic sheet so it will eventually scratch, or the oleophobic layer will wear off and it'll look like crap + fingerprints galore.

Because the plastic scratch very easy and leaf finger prints behind + it does clean easy. I love the feeling of glass. Not one scratch is left behind.
Don't recommend it to any one because its a lot of work and your phone looks terrible with all the glue left behind.

Nail polish remover and "Goo Gone" they seem to working ok but still streaky. I haven't tried pressing very hard bc I don't want to damage the screen.

You can press hard. Glass is very strong. You have to rub strong and use a cotton cloth.

Sure, you can do that, but you'll have to re-calibrate the proximity sensor (the one that turns your screen of when you're talking into it). You can do that by open the dialer and dial *#*#7378423#*#* and then tap "Calibrations" and then "Proximity sensor". And yes, you'll lose the Sony logo. The logos on the back won't come off if you remove that one though.
really? we can take out the backas well? i thought just the frontside...
so in your opinion.it is ok too put another one on the front?

Yes, there's a plastic sheet on the back too, and it's much easier to get off, or so I've read. And yes, you can use a second screen protector on the front. You may have to recalibrate the proximity sensor though - as I mentioned in my previous post. You can easily check this by making a call after you've added the screen protector and see if the screen turns off when you lift it up to your head.

Not gonna happen. If you've read a little in the Q&A section, you'll know why.

Wouldn't bet on that. One guy in the android-hilfe.de forum killed his screen with too much pressure: http://www.android-hilfe.de/sony-xp...display-werksfolie-entfernen.html#post6488783

I'm just glad I don't see 100000 fingerprints all over it now!
