Hi all,
My HTC One X+ seems to have an issue with the lens cover. I'm sure it is not scratched as I have it well protected, but it does overheat a great deal and I'm wondering what has happened to the lens cover?
I have attached an image but I'm not sure you can really see very well.
Thew result is extremely blurry images from the camera.
Anyone had similar or can suggest what may have happened? Or do you think I did scratch it without realising, its just it doesn't look like scratches, it looks like blemishes on the inside? Maybe caused by constant overheating?
I have the same with my X+, though with slightly less visible "damage". The photos it takes are just horrible: almost no fine details and especially images taken in sunny conditions come out blurred with some sort of misty soft focus effect.
I don't know whether heat has something to do with it or this is caused by something else.. My device doesn't heat up that much There's a topic here on the same subject, with example photos. I was actually looking for that one, but then saw yours.
How about polishing the lens? Might end up worse, right?

Hi,
Yeah, I saw that post, the one about using toothpaste? I'm not so sure about that really...
Mine overheats all the time and I get the red/green LED flashing.
Thing is, I don't remember scratching it at all as it has a protective cover (not the lens, the phone) and I'm sure I'd remember scratching it and the fact that there would be other scratches around it... I've tried giving it a good clean, but it makes no difference, leading me to think it's inside.
I may have to send it in, but can't really do without it...
Let's see if others reply...
Mine is the same. I don't take pictures with the phone anymore as the images look like crap now. I figured it was due to being kept in my pocket, keys rubbing etc. The lens looks the same as above, scuffed looking. My phone also tends to get very hot.
Pretty crap design if you ask me. I've always kept various smart phones in my pocket, none has gone this way even the cheep Huawei I had!
There's a film coating on the lens, probably anti glare or something. This is what gets scratched up, not the glass. Mine had gotten fairly scratched up too. I saw the toothpaste thread and did my due diligence Google searching on cell cameras and toothpaste. Spent 10 minutes with some plain white toothpaste and a damp paper towel, cleared the lens cover area and my camera takes great pictures again. Do some googling, lots of people have tried this before on lots of devices. It tends to work pretty well.

Today i tried to clean my lens with toothpaste but it did not work the scratches were still there. Can someone give a good tutorial, I tried it with white toothpaste and Belkin display clothe

Mine was doing the same after I'd had it for about four months. Photos looked grainy, washed out & not dissimilar to a 1.0 megapixel camera from 1998.
I fixed it by spraying a load of Windex onto a tissue and giving it a gentle but prolonged wipe. Now works perfectly.
HOWEVER, OP, has the problem occured after installing a new ROM? You might be experiencing camera trouble because of this, and because your lense appears to be manky you might be attributing the quality issues wrongly.
The toothpaste trick works. I have a much clearer picture, the is a bit scratched but the cloudiness has been removed. Much better and useable again!
I can also confirm that 10 minutes rubbing the lens with toothpaste does the trick.
Mine is a bit scratched as well, although I'd say that actually the coating is scratched, but the pictures are still OK.
However, I can confirm that the toothpaste trick works as I've done it on my Desire Z a while ago and it did the trick.

Was wondering if anyone else is having this problem as I haven't found anything about it which is quite surprising given how annoying it is.
Basically I've found that when I don't have a screen protector covering the lens of the camera, it picks up smudges very easily from the way I hold my phone and my finger touching the lens every now and then. This causes several very very noticable "ring" type things on the pictures I take where the flash is used. I'm a bit confused that HTC didn't address this issue as it more or less ruins any pictures taken in lower light conditions.
My solution so far has been to keep using a screen protector over the lens as this doesn't create the ring effect even if i purposely keep touching the lens with my finger. Does anyone know a solution to this though? I'd really like to not have a screen protector over my lenses as it probably ever so slightly degrades picture quality.
Your holding it wrong

I've had that problem with every phone i had so far. I've just made it a habit to give the glas a quick wipe with my shirt or whatever is available unless I don't care too much how the shot actually looks.

Maybe its where the lens is positioned making it more likely for me to touch it, but I've never noticed it on ny previous phones and certainly never to the extent it appears on this one. Doesn't look like there any other solution other than to give the lens a quick wipe.
How durable is the glass though? Can it scratch it wiped with a shirt, etc? Also, does anyone know exactly how much a screen protector deterioates the image?

Ah really?? What a ridiculous design flaw if they used a material that scratches easily considering how damm big that area is.
Well its obvious if you hold your phone with coins, keys and so. I tend to hold my phone in pocket with nothing else and since I bough my evo (early august 2011) I cant find any scratch even tiny. And yea - using shirt to clean lens is must-do before taking photo!
i have the same problems with it. but i also notice some scratches on the glass.

I haven't got a single scratch anywhere on the phone so far as I take very good care of it, but recently I've been wanting to use the camera without a screen protector over it. It sucks that they didn't factor in that if you make a mistake ONCE and put it in a pocket with keys or something, then it will get permanently scratched. If they insist or making a big fat area of removable glass on the back, then they should really put something like gorilla glass there. And anyway, it is still a major fail for HTC as with a screen protector on, these smudges do not create rings around the photo. It is the ****ty material they used that causes this problem.
Just to confirm though, are you saying wiping the glass with your shirt will not scratch it?
Well it would have bunch of scratches till now I use shirt to clean it everytime I take photo. Still "glass" that protects lenses isn't the same as one on front of the phone and its more likely easier to scratch - be aware of that.
Ps. I had motorbike accident just after buying phone... it was damaged a lot, and replacing "glass" parts at service is freaking expensive (especially front parts) so dont scratch it!
ok so ive used the sgp case on this thing with zagg on the front but i have noticed little hairline scratches on the rear camera which do not effect the photos at all but they worrie me can someone please either ease my mind or tell me the bad ... please and thank you
oh and i have tried the screen shield thing but messes with the camera ???? so no way
I've dropped my s2 before and had a whole thin crack go down the lens of the camera..remember its not the camera itself but the glass covering it....and I didn't notice any difference in quality in pictures or video and believe mine was probaly a lot worse..I like to take pictures...the whole mind set of believing your camera glass bothered the hell out of me....but I wouldn't worry about or let it bother you too much...as it didn't effect any quality....I hope this helps ease your mind alittle.
yea they arent visible unless i hold it at certain light in the certain spots etc but i see them and i obsess over them! my wife even yells at me but ya know that i havent noticed any pic quality! is anyone doing anything to protect the camera that i dont know???

I freak on that too. My old Evo and Evo 3D's Otterbox cases had protectors over the cameras. I feel like I have a 5"brick of C4 handling this thing because I'm so worried about scratching it. Luckily I think it's on Ebay where you can buy a while new back with lens cover of you do mess it up

so is anyone else freaked out about scratching this camera ?? or screw it lol i dunno what else i need to do to protect ? i mean i know that they are made to be used but i babie this thing and its mint but those to me are like death only visible in certain light but still no effect to pictures that i see
I just put a piece of clear film between the camera glass and the case.
Speaking from the perspective of a photographer I can tell you that ANY aberration in the optics of a camera will have a detrimental effect on the quality of the image recorded. As light is refracted through a lens the scattering of the spectrum will cause unexpected and, often, unwanted lighting effects in the finished image. Best of all worlds... keep your lens (and protective outer casing) protected until ready for use, then remove any outer covering from the camera lens before taking photos. Then cover again until the next use.
Happy photo hunting.
Looking at the back of the phone, the camera looks like it sticks out more then sgs1 and 2. Do you think there camera'bump' or worse still the camera lens will get scratched when lying it on its back?

From my experience this is inevitable. On my HTC Desire it is quite badly scratched up. The good thing is, that the part that gets scratched up is only the transparent plastic on the back cover, which can be replaced easily.
Don't know about the One X though. Its camera juts out too. I was planning to buy that but didn't because of the non removable back..

is the s3 lens sticking out more than s2? some images pls
Hope these images appear !
Scratches on a lens are generally hardly noticeable, if at all, in pictures, though more so if you're shooting f11 onwards. Obviously a mega gouge would show but I don't think there's too much to worry about. It's the condition of the sensor that really matters.

The camera lens would be placed a bit inside the silver frame, so it should be safe hopefully

Most people who have had a phone where the glass/plastic lens cover lies against a table when the phone is resting on its back, find that camera images get much more blurry after a few weeks. Many HTC Desire users ended up punching out the plastic cover with a pen, and when you see before and after pictures, the improvement is really noticeable.
The manufacturer just needs to build in a half mm lip on the camera surround. Doesn't look like Samsung did this. The next best option is an additional case protrudes beyond the lens cover, like a gel case.
well the Desire was designed to be placed screen down, hence the lip - so it doesn't scratch the screen.
With the SGS3 packing Gorilla glass 2, I'm guessing you're meant to (or at least can..) place it screen down also...
it would be fine... trust me I have S 2 and never had any straches neither front nor the back.
I've had a chance to play around with an SIII and that was my first concern to, but there is a silver frame around the lens that protrudes slightly (about half a mm) so the camera doesn't actually touch flat surfaces.

Thanks, that's good to hear.
I always buy a case as I generally drop my phone at least once a week and my cases take the beating, I have practically shattered the plastic pieces on my case, btw the case is one of those gels with a piece of plastic in it.

My camera lense is scratched to buggery, i had to buy a case to stop it getting worse, Bad move by Samsung IMHO,
I dont think it makes a difference with the shots though, but left to get worse and i guess it probably would eventually..

hi i bought HOX+ recently. i am not satisfied with camera quality of the phone can some one guide me which ROM has best camera quality???
How is the lens? Is the coating scratched? If so, that could substantially reduce photo quality. Search the forum, there are ways to fix this.
I had the same problem. Fixed it by rubbing the lens with toothpaste! Sounds weird but it really worked. I can't find the thread where I got it from.

Ha, sorry to dig up an old thread, but so glad I searched before posting. I just got a HOX+ last week (used, otherwise in mint condition) and I like everything about it except for the picture quality. Way washed out and had blooming effect. Custom image adjustment did a little bit better but still unacceptable. I thought there was plastic film on it and tried to carefully peel it. Almost decided to sell it until I came across this thread. A little bit of baking soda and it's night and day difference! You guys are awesome!

Just wet your fingertip (dampen, really, not dripping wet), dab it in a bit of baking soda and just rub it on the lens like you're tryring to rub something off your skin. Wipe of excess powder with towel. It literally took a few seconds so if you have deeper gouges it probably won't work as well. I didn't have problem with baking soda going inside the lens since it's not wet and lens is well sealed. Toothpaste is a good consistency too, which is probably why people have suggested it. I just happen to have baking soda and I use it around the house a lot. Baking soda is in many toothpaste as a cleaner/polish specifically because it's a very, very mild abrasive so you won't leave gouges. Point the lens down if you're worried about anything going into the lens.

thank you..will definitely try it..since last time i used a toothpaste but it went in.. the build quality of AT&T htc one x + is very cheap...and spare parts are way too expensive.
Well, carefully with that toothpaste ... I've also tried it and went from bad to worse and now my pictures suffer from very bad quality. Had to order a new back cover, it comes with new lense, so I hope it'll be ok.
Cheers.
I tried the baking soda trick and it worked!!! Images taken by the camera is crisp and not blurry anymore. :good:
The toothpaste trick did wonders for me! At first I used a gel toothpaste, nothing happened. Went and got myself a simple, white toothpaste, after 10 minutes of rubbing (and another 30 or so of carefully cleaning up), this happened:
Hey guys,
Im a proud owner of an HOX+ and im definitely satisfied with it as it is my first smartphone. However it is a quality product, it seems that the engineers tried to save some money (or whatever the reason is) and made our camera lens protector from plastic.
Due to this maleur, i started getting unclear and fuzzy pictures with a purple lane on the top, after a half-year use. I surfed over the net and found some solutions (use toothpasta, banana and more unbelievable methods).
I used Sonax's chrome and alu pasta with a regular nano wipe. It only took 1 mins, you have to push the wipe quite hardly, but you are not at gym so do not destroy your phone i did it clockwise and the result was a totally clear, unscratched surface.
After the process some pasta remained near the lens, i removed it with a corner of a paper due it is thin, but be careful not to screw up your work.
To prevent further scratches, i placed a round shaped piece of a screen guard.
Sorry for my english, its not my native language

Did this a few months back and I was afraid it would scratch. But it didn't, it seems the lens is more resistant without the coating
Same here, it works with toothpaste. I used lens cleaning paper since it doesn't disintegrate like tissue. Then carefully removed excess paste by wiping with a moist tissue.

I used some plastic scratch remover stuff, made for car headlights. Worked great, took all the scratches right off. Its been 6 months since that, been more careful to keep it from getting scratched.
And does any of you know a trick that removes the scratches from the screen?

I'm sorry to be that nitpicky, but will any kind of toothpaste do? Or simple white one?
I've got some scratches on the lens cover, nothing serious yet but I wanna be prepared to do this when the time comes
I'm definitely going to try this. What kind of cloth did you use to rub it in though? Is a tissue fine?
Ive used the bag of my sunglasses. It is nanowipe so it's tender enough. Do not use anything made of paper. I don't know anything about the toothpaste method.
