Hey guys, for the past 5 or 6 cm builds I have flashed I never get the notification that I have received text messages. Notifications are on through the messaging app, I've even turned sync on. The only way I recieve my messages is if I click on the messaging app which is a pain, because somedays I forget to click it and I see messages from early in the morning. Is anyone else having this problem or does one know of a solution? Thanks

I hate how my screen turns on when I receive an sms message. I only need the notification icon in the taskbar and the led blink and if I disable the notifications from the settings the screen does not open but I loose the other notifications as well. Any ways to fix this?

Bump
interested in that too
Don't know if it's possible with the stock app, however if you're willing to use a 3rd party app, Go SMS does have an option to keep the screen off and quite possibly other apps do too.

switch to HANDCENT SMS, it is the best sms app, i am using it for a year now. Go to setting and disable pop-up. Now when you receive a message, it will vibrate, led will blink, but screen will not turn on. You will ses the message in the notification bar.

That's what I'm using right now but I want to minimize the use of third party apps as much as possible . Plus with handcent sms when I send a picture or video it doesn't work. I have to use the regular messaging app in order for my mms to leave successfully .

Still no solution for this one. I don't want to use handcent or go sms for two reasons. First I like the simplicity if the stock samsung app and second I use the direct call feature that only works with stock app. There must be a way to hack the default messaging app to stock opening the screen when receiving a message.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
BUMP. This feature is sooooo annoying!!!!
It irritates me also. I've used Handcent on every device in the past, but I don't want to for some reason on this one. I actually rather like the stock messaging app.
I suppose I'll go back to Handcent. The screen on is annoying, plus it creates a temporary wakelock that drains the battery even more.

If you don't mind using another app, Handcent SMS lets you keep the screen off when a message is received.
That app has bad reviews... anyone know if chompSMS has this feature?
My screen doesn't turn on when I get a text, I thought that was the norm!?

Go SMS Pro also has an option for turning the screen on when message arrives.

4,5 Stars for 450 000 Downloads it's not that bad ??
I use the App over more than 15 Months and never had a problem with it. Try it out :fingers-crossed:
Personally I think Hancent is the best especially for the speaking text feature but you could try to turn off the preview feature in message settings not sure if it will work but worth a try
Has anybody gotten their hands on the new hangouts apk? What are your initial thoughts? Care to share the love?

I think it's a pretty good step...
I like how you can select the manner in which you would like to communicate: hangouts/sms/google voice, which gets me wondering why they're saying Google Voice isn't integrated.
One thing I don't really like, is that it opens a new chat/hangout even if you're on 1 contact. I think it would be cool if you carried the conversation with the same person within 1 window regardless of method (sms/hangouts/gv), but that's just me.

uninstall reinstall to fix.

Looks nice, but I'd love to see them add a widget or two. I've gotten used to my messaging thread list taking up a home screen, which is very convenient.

So I downloaded the new 2.3 APK, and I didn't get the Google Voice integration of texts and voicemail. I do have the ability to send and receive calls, but there was no prompt nor an option in settings to get texts and voicemail. Am I missing something?

I just downloaded it last night. Was never a big fan until now. I love the integrated dialer that you can use wifi to make calls. It's pretty cool. As far as your prompt, try clearing data and opening it up again as that was the first screen I saw - asking if I wanted to turn on sms. I hit yes and it imported all of my messages right from the stock app, which I promptly froze...
I got that, its now my default SMS app, but the google voice texts aren't integrated like it should be. Other are reporting being able to send texts via hangouts as your google voice number, but the only option I have is at&t.
Some are saying its by invitation only right now. No invite means the option in settings will be hidden

Oh... I got it now. Sorry, misunderstood you. Yeah, the only option I have for sms is my normal number.
Hey I figured it out. You need to have Google voice installed. Then hamgouts asks if you want to integrate google voice SMS. Say yes. Them there is a new setting in hamgouts SMS that allows you to default send from your phone number, google voice number or SMART RESPONSE which is whichever number you last used for that contact...

Mine works as intended without Google Voice installed.

Probably a bug with hangouts, but notice the capacitive buttons still respond when in a call. That is, when the prox sensor gets tripped, capacitive buttons should be disabled, but they're not. Doesn't seem like the screen is shutting off entirely. On another phone, in a dark room, I can still seem some backlight.
Hi,
I'm trying to switch my SMS app on my GS4 from what came with my phone to hangouts. Currently when I send an emoji through the built in sms app it is sent as MMS instead of sms (it switchs as soon as i type an emoji) which is fine with me. But then I go to start using hangouts for SMS and I type an emoji and the recipient gets nothing. Please help. I would like to switch.

I'm not sure why it does it but for some reason in certain versions of sms apps with Samsung phones it defaults to mms instead. I know there is an xposed app which changes default long messages back to sms vs mms. I use hangouts as well but it doesn't give me that issue. Then again I'm on an S3
Edit: have you changed the default messaging app to hangouts inside settings within hangouts?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Yes I have tried changing the default app within in hangouts. And the sending via MMS doesn't bother me. If it could fix it I'll send them through MMS inside hangouts if there were a way.

Try using the S5 SecMms_blue.apk.. It allows you to send emoji's through sms.. Just find your carriers or if your international based use theirs..
Just find it somewhere and install as a regular app. I'm not rooted nor plan on rooting.

Umm.. yea then you will not be able to accomplish what you want.. I know thats some Messaging apps use wifi to send pics, but the other person needs to have the same app..
Yeah def check out the xposed module. I think this is ridiculous. I know in the newest version of hangouts in the bottom left hand corner you can click and change back and forth between the two but if you add emoji it might not give you that option. It does me, but I'm running a rooted Moto Droid Mini.
