hi guys,
I need a media player and rather than get a wdtv live, i'm thinking of purchasing an android stick as it has the bonus of apps etc.
I've seen loads of different sticks, such as MK808, MK809, MK809ii, MK809iii, MK908.
To be perfectly honest, I'm confused as to which is the BEST stick in terms of hardware/stability/software.
I want to be able to watch hd movies, play games and connect external storage. such as usb stick or hdd.
Which make/model is the latest so far? What can you recommend?

cx918 and mk908 are from the new generation of pen-TV based on RK3188 chip, all the others you cited in yur original message are based on RK3066 chip.
RK3188 is a 1.6-1.8ghz quad core chip, RK3066 is a 1.2-1.5ghz dual core chip, thus the first is a lot faster.
cx918 has a slightly better wifi than mk908.
Rasperry PI is A LOT less powerfull than both but its also a lot better optimized so it actually outperform both sometimes.

My main concern is Movies - I'm looking for a device which can play almost anything you throw at it and can play HD resolutions smoothly. My understanding here is that a dedicated media player such as the WDTV live would be the best choice. But as you can understand, I want more and therefore the option for installing games/apps would be an added bonus.
So next I need to decide between a Raspberry Pi or an Android Mini PC...assuming it's been optimised, which one is the best?

for movie playing, PI - rk3066 based ones struggles with 1080p content and rk3188 ones firmware still are pretty green while Pi's excellent hardware acceleration implementation plays even 1080p high rate content without any problem.
for some games/apps PI is a bit underpowered while RK3188 is a pretty powerfull chip, better than tegra 3 or samsung exynos 4412 (not at snapdragon 4 or cortex A15 level tho).
Pi has a perfect linux implementation while RK ones are still at an early stage.
not easy to chose, each has its strong and low points.
at least they are cheap.

Well in that case it leaves me with a dilemma. Just to clarify, I would be more than happy to stick with 720p movies as it's mainly for kids (whom can't tell the difference between 720p or 1080p, lol!), if the R3188 can handle them smoothly...what would you say? If it definately can handle them smoothly, then what about compatibility of file formats?
File formats should all work. Even at 1080p. If not there is always the play store and MX player has run everything I've thrown at it on my $20 MK802

Thanks plznote. You said your MK802 has ran everything you've thrown at it, which is great, but what about smoothness of movie playback in 720p???
Also note the Pi won't play netflix movies, at all

I don't watch netflix movies...it's mainly mkv, mp4 and youtube videos.
So what is 720p movie playback like on the android stick(s)? Is it smooth? Any minor issues?

It is only 1GHz, but the GPU plays 4k video with 120Mbps bitrate and 3D blueray output.

If you play from a usb disk it should work like a real charm, but I don't know about the wifi speed, it doesn't have an external antenna. I'm sure playing that 4k file through wifi won't be so smooth.
If you can get a device with this chipset and a gigabit wired connection, go for it.

If your main concern is video, I think this is hands down the best device.
It is a quite new chip, so maybe that's why you haven't heard about it.

For what I've read, there's little difference in the sticks with the same processor. At the moment, the RK 3188 chip seems to be the new standard. There are a few sticks that have it. I've just bought the Imito QX 1: the reason was the simple fact that the former models of Imito were nice, it had good reviews and because it has a metal plate (and no plastic) on the back, which is sort of the heatsink. On top of that, you can attach a normal passive heatsink, which seems to be enough to cool the processor... It then can run the 1080p kernel. Not many sticks have 1080p kernels...Finless (known for the finless roms), did a review on the build quality and he was pleasantly surprised! Mainly because of the heatsink option and of the fact that there can be an external antenna attached to it.
I've read, that for now, there is no hardware acceleration possible for the RK 3188 chip, but maybe in time... And are there ways to play 1080p movies, without HW acceleration? For now I've still got my RBPI...

I can't posts links here, but see my former remark for offers... there is an usb 2.0 connection on it... just google on specs and you'll find out yourself. But yes, every stick has the ability to attach an external hdd and even more, you can connect it to your NAS.
Don't let things like weak wifi reception on other models fool you. You can order a usb to rc45 cable for 4 euro's.
XBMC is possible, but as mentioned before, it has been optimized for machines like the rbpi. All rk 3188 sticks suffer from the fact that HW accelleration is not YET supported...
The only downside from this stick, for what I've seen now that it is a pain to hook up to your stereo, since there is no audio out connection on the device... Few sticks have it, but the android media boxes have more connections. So you won't have to buy a seperate powered usb hub.
Please be aware that a 2 amp converter is desired, when running this device.
Last thing... the Imito stick has a separate bluetooth and wifi chip. for what I know, this is kind of unique, because most devices have a 'two-in-one' chip. But not sure on this one. Anyone?

I have not sold my old Galaxy Tab 7 yet and I already have my shiny, new and rooted Tablet S.
I keep my movies on my networked media tank on my LAN and I stream movies to my tablets over the network within the house.
I managed to load the cifs.ko module and mount the network media player on both units. I use BS Player Lite on both units (although I have also tried mobo player and mx player on the Tablet S).
So here is my question: The Galaxy Tab is able to play even 1080p mkv's without breaking sweat, basically anything I can throw at it, whereas the Tablet S struggles with some of the 720p mkv's and cannot even start the 1080p ones without freezing. Is this normal behaviour? Is it because the screen has a greater resolution and the Tablet S has to work so much harder than the 1024x600 Galaxy Tab?
The Tegra 2 CPU used in the Tablet S struggles with HD content encoded using H.264 and the High profile. It's a known limitation.
For videos you encode yourself using H.264/x264, you should use the Main profile.
For downloaded HD content that is already encoded using the high profile we're all out of luck
I usually use MX Player Pro on my tablet, but I've tried Dice Player and it is somewhat better at playing high profile stuff, so you may want to give that a try.

When it comes to HD video playback the Exynos 3110 CPU used in the Galaxy Tab has the upper hand, yes. I was a bit surprised to find out that the Tegra 2 wasn't better at video decoding myself. And no, AFAIK it's not just a driver issue, so it can't be fixed through software/firmware.
Heh. Thanks again! This is a real eye-opener. To tell you the truth it never occured to me to check whether a newer chipset / tablet would actually have lower performance than the previous generation. One would think they upped the resolution of these tablets to 1280x800 to meet 720p HD requirements....
I'm using Dice Player, it has HW acceleration.
I was mildly disappointed with the Sony's high-res Video playback capabilities after I also upgraded from my venerable GT-P1000 Galaxy Tab. Now I use MX Video Player and it seems to do alright, but the Sony's hardware accelerated mode as mentioned above is very finicky about its x264 video.
Also, even if an app claims to be hardware accelerated, chances are extremely good it's probably not. Built-in Hardware Acceleration won't go live until ICS and when video players use the "Hardware Decoding" option (note that its not the same), they just use the Sony's built-in chip and all the video players will deal with it pretty much the same.

A help if you are having issues is to shut down all of the unneeded apps, clear out your ram and shut off the data connection.
well im sure there are a billion of these threads but heres mine because im special :3; so pretty much i want one of these to play games/emulators so it needs to be fast (dual or quad core higher than 1.2ghz)and occasionally watch Netflix (i have a chromecast for that though) but it obviously has to have wifi, and i would really want Bluetooth with it so i can hook up my controller to it. i dont know if ram is important you guys would have to tell me if what would be the best, im not interested in putting a custom rom in it probably just rooting it. as for controlling it i sill do not understand how to control it, i see that some come with remote controllers but how would you know which one comes with one. i was thinking this one but not sure

I purchased one of the stick systems a year ago and wasn't really impressed with it. the WiFi is bad and the whole thing seems flaky. In fact i was just here looking for a custom rom for it. I am looking at getting a slightly larger on with ethernet plug and multiple usb ports

Ok, MINIX finally release their next generation android tv box, named as NEO X8 and NEO X8-H.
Both of them are base in Amlogic chip. so video playback should be better than rockchip platform.

It's use the amlogic s802 quad core chip, not rockchip, see my post
and their neo x9 will use the rk3288.
Is it worth waiting for the RK3288 (X9)?
I am waiting for the next gen to replace my old single core box. It isn't going to be a pressing matter until August.

Depends on yourself, there is too much unsure things about neo x9, without specification,without release date, and without price information.
Till now the NEO X8-H should be the best android media player.

My question was more about whether the RK3288 was superior to the S802-H
I can wait until about July, then my "situation" will require a decent android STB.
However, if the S802-H is just as good as the RK3288, then I may as well buy now and benefit from the purchase sooner rather than when it becomes necessary.

From the specification, the Rk3288 is better than the S802-H, however, you know, rockchip is always sucks on XBMC, you can't get hardware decoding well on rk3066 and rk3188. don't know if it will get better in RK3288.

Hmmmm it's a hard choice.
I use Plex since I have a computer running 24/7 hosting all my media.
However, for certain live stream that only works on Flash (like Canada's CBC sports channel), it requires a good chipset. My Nexus 5 does fine, my overclocked TF300T does okay, but the single core STB I have just DIES.
Plex is very iffy on my single core STB but I imagine even the Minix Neo X7 would do just great with Plex at 20mbps.

I am taking a long and pretty hard look at the latest generation of what is colloquially termed as TV Sticks AKA Smart Media Players. Before we get there, lets take a short history lesson to put us all in perspective.
TV STICK EVOLUTION -
The first generation pretty much consisted of devices based either around Arm Cortex-A9 or Amlogic's A9 processor. Those were single core and started typically with Android ICS (4.0.4) @1 GHz. They carried a small form factor, typically looking like a slightly larger USB drive. Tronsmart and Favi are among many some or little known manufacturers. Connectivity wise these typically only had Wireless connection and sometimes Bluetooth.
Then came second generation from the same manufacturers. Those are typically dual core devices with Cortex-A9 Dual core @1.5 GHz. Bluetooth is more common among these devices and so is RJ45 LAN Connector port. However this is led to a slightly larger form factor. MK808 based on Rocketchip RK3066 is one of the more popular in this class. Although I personally bracket the Chromecast into this category, I am very well aware, it does not run on Android and is more of a DLNA Client without original setup.
The 3rd generation has been introduced in last year or two. Those devices seriously focused on media delivery and hardware acceleration. In order to deliver home theatre experience, these devices focused HDMI 1080p Video and possibly DTS or Dolby surround sound. So you'd find hardware decoders plenty with these devices. Also in addition, serious effort is being put into GPU arena with bigger and better GPUs appearing as compared to the traditional phones and tablets with their tiny screens. Now these devices have fairly bigger canvas (as big as your tv), so a monster-house of a GPU is a distinct possibility.
However, more manufacturers and makers started to tap into this niche area and you will see an explosion of devices into this arena. Primary Processors, you are likely to see here are from Amlogic, Intel, Arm and Rockchip. However Arm Cortex A9 being a Juggernaut, Intel has decided to exit from this scene. So in short, we are seeing a multitude of devices now with each trying to find its own niche. They have taken different directions and the fact that there are quiet a few unbranded devices out there, our choice or decision for the right device has just become wholly complicated. Some of the good examples of 3rd generation are Minix X8H, Tronsmart Vega S89 and U Box S812, the device of this review.
DISCLAIMER - I want to clear some things up front. I was approached and offered this device for review. This was due in part to my work with the JASS Rom.
Since I follow XDA Code of Conduct, I have made every effort to provide honest, impartial and non-judgemental review of the device at hand. As you might imagine, I have done significant research into the field of Android TV sticks. And my intention is to combine review of the device with a review of this category of devices in general.
This Review is going to focus on Beelink UBox S812 4K device. There are quiet a few names for this device depending on which retailer/reseller you are looking at. However, the one I will be reviewing here looks like the picture in OP. The Package as I received was fairly compact. Came via DHL unlike Hongkong Post Office.
Packaging as shipped -
The packaging was pretty nice and the unit comes in a nice little package.
This actually turned out to be box within a box. Here is an actual side view for reference,

First Impressions -
It appears like you have all the necessary basics included in the package. Here's what we have.
The device has predictably larger form factor than the first generation Android Sticks. Its reminds me of Roku's form factor. It is understandable that the device is larger now with so many connectivity options as well as more powerful processor. Comparing to its predecessor, the UBOX S805 MXIII, you can see the form factors are fairly identical. The IR sensor for the remote is still up front. However, this time the blue/red power led is moved to be next to the IR Sensor and the power button is gone.
There are a set of connectivity options along the back with Power and HDMI(1080p) being Key features. There is RJ/45 to compliment Wireless Support for A/B/G/N. There is also A/V out as well as S/PDIF out as well for those who are interested. Along the right edge, we have additional ports. Those are USB OTG, two full size USB and one MicroSD slot. Giving ample choices for extended storage options. The two USB slots are particularly appreciated as one is likely taken by external device connectivity (Joystick/mouse/trackpad) leaving the other for USB Drives. Of course there's Bluetooth 4.0 as well so you can easily connect that way for peripherals. The S812 does come with a remote, which is not only intuitive, but also pretty handy and easy to use. Although I have a Favi Wireless Keyboard with track pad, I found myself relying more on the included remote.
Hardware and Software configuration -
The device runs of Android Kitkat 4.4.1 and it appears to be fairly Stock version with minimal bloat. There are some preinstalled apps that offer you access to Movies and apps and then there's Kodi. The unit I received has 1 GB Ram with 8 GB internal storage. There is a choice of getting 2GB Ram and 16 GB internal storage as well.

In Depth Look -
Once Powered on, the S812 took approximately 10 to 12 seconds to go through the boot animation and present me with this home screen.
Of course they have a custom Launcher. Kind of looked like Windoz 8 home screen to me. Didn't like it very much for the convoluted way to add favourite apps to this screen. I am sure some might like it. Possibly its convenient to choose app with the included remote.
I didn't like it in SmartStick where I had included Apex Launcher in my Rom. Since I didn't like it, here in this case, I went poking under settings. Thankfully they had left Kitkat stock launcher alone and in the firmware. So I got this screen instead, which is an improvement.
I did change the wallpaper and add the Clock to the screen, but you get the idea. (So Kodi's included from the beginning ? That's nice.) Thank God for the Screenshot button! Also notice the Power Button. Let's take a look at what else we have here, hoping not much bloat.
Yeah not much bloat. There was one game in there for Catch Fish. I removed it before taking screenshot. Antutu and ES File Explorer are my additions. So next up, check to see if it is rooted or needs rooting. If my experience with other devices, is any indication, it would be pre-rooted. So I checked and yes it is! I had to install SuperSU, since the binary was old and there wasn't a gatekeeper. I had pushed the 2 Screenshot apps for this review. I guess redundant now. I had let my netflix account expire, so included app is of no use to me. But it will be handy to others.
PERFORMANCE -
I do however have Amazon Prime and played a movie from there. Apart from initial buffering, which is Amazon's doing, I did not have any interruptions whatsoever. I played the movie 1080p Full HD. No issues. It did support Dolby as well as DTS. So, that piece works as advertised. As I said, I removed the one game app and am not going to be playing any games on here. So Can't speak to that. I did run AnTuTu Benchmark. Mixed bag of results.
Hmm. Not too bad. Here's how it stacks up to other Comparable devices.
Notice it says Unverified. Per AnTuTu's Clarification, that indicates some tweaking by manufacturer to beat AnTuTu's benchmarking tools. So take it with a pinch of salt.
Under the hood tweaking -
So me being me, and that the audience is android savvy, I did what any of us do. Went looking at what kernel is supporting that can boost the actual performance even better. Say hello to [APP][ROOT] Trickster MOD [Kernel Settings]!
Looking under the hood, I see that the kernel supports, two TCP/IP Compression Algorithms, Cubic and Reno. Of these, cubic a default. That's a decent choice too. I found, that the buffering if any was reduced with cubic over WiFi. This factor is particularly important that with Full HD streaming, you have to have best network throughput or you will see buffering. Although cubic was better for me, your mileage may very.
As far as Governors and Schedulers are concerned, there are two choices for scheduler, cfq and Row. Cfq is default. For governers, we have more choices, HotPlug, Ondemand and Performance. I found that performance governor was bit unstable and the S812 kept shutting down intermittently. Ondemand on the other hand, increased the overall AnTuTu score. So I'd stick with it. Although it is possible to use any of these governors for the GPU as well, I personally don't prefer to do it. Since we are not trying to save battery here, I don't even want to talk about undervolting.
Oh and if you are looking for a refresher or a crash course on these governor names and scheduler names, then look at the Overclock and undervolt link in my signature for reference.
Other Items Of Interest -

The following is not mine but with the myrid confusion of devices, I wanted to point out that it comes fairly close. Do understand that the case is different in this case. We don't have the Full SD card slot on the side but have usb ports and microsd slot as discussed above. But gives pretty good idea otherwise. The video is in Spanish but youtube can translate English subtitles.

My Review is still in progress. I will be finishing it in a day or two. To answer your question, yes certainly possible to pass the sound. I'd recommend to do so out of your TV as much as possible.

- Xbox 360 Controller (USB) is used by someone? Native mode works simulators and fps, other games do not. App was not found him. ;(

I have linked the firmware I have. Not sure if that's what you have. This device IS NOT MXIII Plus. What was the type of media you were playing when sound stuttered ?
I haven't used XBOX Controller. But it should be possible to use.

But all the same parameter as MXIII plus. The PCB should MXIII about the photo. I think it is NetXeon.
Xbox 360 controller can be used, but only with that support. Not all programs will be recognized.
Not the movie, but the menu stepping sometimes come up with a strong voice crackling. Similarly a blank white noise. The input switching disappear.

There are 2 USB Ports for this purpose. Those are mounted into /storage/xxxx Partition. You can use any File Explorer program such as ES File Explorer to navigate to that directory. The same program will allow you to search as well.
I am not sure if it supports up to 3 TB Storage. I'd think Kitkat does. So give it a try.

EDIT - @Ice_machinE My passport connected flawlessly. I didn't test a lot but played one mp3 song off it. The drive mounts into /storage/ExteSD/sdo

2 TB. But then its my assumption that 3 TB won't be any different. Android would be able to mount the partition if FSTAB is set to mount one.

Hey guys, i´m looking for a farily cheap box to use exclusively as a steam link device for 4k60, currently i own the OG Steam Link, and while it is a hell of a little gadget, it simply does not deal with 4k60, and my actual TV, even tho it has Android TV has some weak decoding capabilities it seems, i lose frames even at 1080p.
Anyways, anyone has any experience with Steam Link (wired) and any AMLogic S905X4 SoC decoding exclusevly 4k60 games to share?
Are both, the computer and the Android TV, wired?
The chip is for sure more than capable enough.
Let me also suggest you to try AMD link or Moonlight for nvidia.
