Need help with CM10.1 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I tried to flash the latest CM10.1 nightly on my rooted Galaxy S3 using ROM Manager (took the backup using ROM Manager first on my External SD Card), but now the phone is stuck on Cyanogenmod startup logo. I tried turning it off but it just loops back on again and goes to the logo. After pulling the battery, I tried to go to CWM by holding home + vol up + power but it turns on into CM instead. Odin recovery mode is still working after pulling the battery though ( vol down + home + power ). I'm doing this the first time so please answer the following questions:
1. Is the phone bricked for good?
2. If not, how can I go back to the backup I created before flashing if the phone wont even turn on or go to CWM?
Please answer in as much detail as possible as this is my first time flashing any room.
Thanks in advance!

Try going into CWM again by pressing Volume Up + Power + Home at the same time when booting. If you're successful, flash the Nandroid backup you made. If not, maybe you could flash the original stock Samsung Touchwiz ROM via Odin and then rooting and flashing CWM over again.

Thank you for the quick reply, it's not going into the CWM by pressing vol up + power + home. The phone just boots up into CM. How do I flash the original stock Touchwiz ROM via Odin? Can you provide a link?

Also, can anyone tell me where did I go wrong so I can avoid mistakes in the future?

Fixed it! Had to flash CWM again through Odin and then restored. Now, before I go ahead and make the same mistake again. Can anyone tell me where did I go wrong?

[Q] Phone stuck in boot loop after returning to stock

Hey all,
I recently got a Nexus 4 and gave my trusty Vibrant to a buddy of mine. However, in the time they had it, they really managed to mess it up(it was running the latest cm10 nightly and semaphore kernel when I handed it over). I got the phone back and have used Odin to flash it back to stock with the original pit and PDA file. Now, the phone simply flashes the I-9000 bootloader splash screen over and over(unless plugged into the PC, then it flashes the loading circle over and over). Any one have any ideas? Normally I would flash stock to resolve this, but flashing stock is the cause of my problem now.
EDIT: I should mention, I can still get to download mode, but not any kind of recovery.
I would just flash a semaphore .tar in Odin, boot directly to recovery afterwards and flash a ROM.

When returning to stock (JFD?) did you repartition it?
Ding!Ding! Repartitioning might be it. Also reflash GB BLers after flashing your first ROM to get rid of the GTi9000 boot splash
Hey guys, thanks for the responses. I've been away, but I've now tried your suggestions. I flashed the semaphore kernel via Odin, and while it no longer boot loops, it won't go into any kind of recovery manager and will simply sit on the Semaphore logo. I tried flashing a gingerbread bootloader via odin as well, but it didn't help.
As for returning to stock. yes I am indeed repartioning it, but it still doesn't boot. If I return to stock form the Semaphore kernel, it beings bootlooping again.
Don't check repartition and see if it boots.
After flashing semaphore did you try the button combo to recovery? If you flashed GB boots it is no longer vol up and vol down +power.
Recovery is power and vol down, DL mode is power vol up.

Yes, I tried it with button combo, I even tried all possible combinations in desperation when it didn't work. I can get it into download mode, but nothing else. I just tried flashing without repartioning, but it resulted in the same bootloop.

[Q] Can't boot into TWRP

Hi everyone,
I'm having a hard time booting into TWRP after a full shutdown of my phone. If I restart the phone and hold the volume up button, everything works fine, but if I go from a fully powered off state and hold the home, power and volume up buttons I will see the blue text show up at the top that the recovery is booting, then the screen will just go black and not do anything for a few seconds before vibrating and doing a normal reboot.
I rooted and installed TWRP using bhp090808's tool here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301720
I'm am currently still using the stock ROM and I want to get this worked out before I flash a custom.
Thanks.
When rebooting into recovery manually, hold the volume up, home and power buttons. When the phone vibrates, release the power button while continuing to hold the home and volume up buttons. That's the correct manual way to get into recovery.

Having the same issue. Not sure how to resolve, I know with GS3 you can flash recovery VIA ODIN but I obviously didn't want do do the GS3 Clockwork Mod recovery, worried that it may cause more damage.
Holding VOL UP + PWR from a cold boot doesn't work. Black Screen then Reboots again.
I would suggest following this post if you had the same issue.
It will revert you back to stock and you have to root your phone again, it will go back to a usable state, if you are in a soft brick scenario.
Having the same issue. I use different apk's to enter into recovery mode. Or - connect to computer and reboot via adb reboot recovery.

This was the right solution for me. Everything works great now. Thanks and thanked!
You actually don't need to hold the Home button, works with just volume up and power.
have CWM recovery and can't switch to TWRP
I installed initially installed CWM recovery when I rooted the phone. I then installed TWRP (I thought so anyway) using goo manager and when I boot into recovery mode I still get CWM recovery. Any suggestions as to what I can do to get TWRP to work? I am currently running the CM 10.1 rom.

2.5.0.2 might be the build that I should be using with my phone. Presently I have constant issues with 2.6.0, either the phone getting stuck @ the team win logo causing me to have to battery pull.. Or just rom's not booting.
Hopefully someone has a download link of 2.5.0.2 out there, I'm unable to locate it anywhere. And hopefully it wont break anything if I downgrade.

No problem. I noticed alot of zips people are making are causing problems because of the way they have their updater-script written for flashing recoveries.

Just an FYI...
I'm not using 2.6.0 any longer either but just for those that don't know.
When your phone hangs on the TWRP screen you don't have to pull the battery, you can reboot recovery by holding the volume up and power button at the same time.
Works for me anyway.

i9100g bootloop and no home button

Hello,
I am an owner on a i9100g on cyanogenmod 10.1 stable...
The Home button suddently stopped working. I tried to flash a stock rom and I got a successful flash, but a bootloop at restart.
My issues are:
I cannot go in Recovery mode since Home button doesn't work
I can flash using odin using a usb jig to put it in download mode
So... What do you propose to do?
Thanks in advance!

I would like to know if it is an hw related issue or it is related to cyanogenmod.

If I select reboot to recovery mode the phone restart several times and finally boots successfully
So... What do you propose to do?
1) Flash a stock rom via Odin (so I do not need the Home button)
2) Is it possible to flash a newer version of Cyanogenmod via odin?

Hello,
I have the same issue, I was in CM 10.1.1 stable and home button not working.
Then, I tried to flash a stock ROM via Odin, and now my phone is stuck in a bootloop...
I tried to flash different ROMS (always stock from sammobile.com) but every time the result is the same: bootloop.
The problem is that as my home button is not working, I cannot go into recovery mode to do a factory reset or flash a custom ROM, neither in download mode (I use a home made JIG for this).
I have also tried to flash the correct OMAP pit file, hoping for it to do a full wipe, but did not work either, my phone is still in a boot loop.
My last hope would be to do a OMAP flash as described here: link
But I am not sure it will fix the problem and this solution is quite risky...
Does anyone have another idea / suggestion ?
Also, I am not confident in changing my home button as it is necessary to remove the LCD first...
@GamingDj: I did not found any i9100g compatible DorimanX kernel, only i9100...
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers
Help
Any help on this issue please ?
My phone is still dead
Fixed it !
I found a way to make it work, and I think it can be useful to some other people.
Here is what I did:
Remove the battery and insert it back in
Insert a USG jig to enter Download mode
Flash a stock ROM from sammobile.com using ODIN, Auto-reboot should be UNCHECKED
Phone will stay in Download mode after the flash is complete. This way the phone will NOT install the package yet
Remove the battery and insert it back in
Plug the JIG to enter Download mode again
Flash the right version of CWM kernel
Reboot the phone
What it did is that the phone tried to install the stock ROM, and ran CWM kernel (instead of the stock one).
The phone boot in Recovery mode with a little instruction at the bottom "Invalid args"
My guess is that CWM does not have the same API and failed to execute the commands.
But... Who cares ? I was in Recovery mode
I was able to Wipe data/Factory reset and wipe cache. Phone is back to life (Home button still broken though...).
Hope this tread can help others in the same position...
Cheers !
Can u use adb?
then, you can enter the recovery mode by using adb reboot recovery

Is my phone bricked or can someone help?

I followed this video to install Cyanogenmod. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQdSOTdV06Q
during the install I got a red error stating there was some problem with the gapps zip. Now my phone gives a quick samsung flash and nothing else happens. If I hold power, home and volume up I can still get into the cyanogenmod screen with the option to install.
I downloaded the files again and tried installing. It got as far as flashing file 1 of 2 and the working bar keeps spinning and doesn't make anymore progress. The screen eventually went black and now I cant even get into the recovery screen. The screen flashed the samsung logo with small blue writing in the top left and then goes black again.
Please help...
Update - If I hold power, volume down and home I am able to get into the downloading screen.
Try to reflash cyanogen mod again but before that format you device completely by going to recovery mod!
Or try to download the cyanogen mod and gapps from xda thread or from somewhere else!
Before flashing any ROM, it is strongly recommended to completely format your device!
Hope it will help you

I found this but it is very vague
IF YOUR PHONE MATCHES OPTION 1 LOOK HERE!!
A soft brick is easily fixed in most cases, here is what you can do to fix your phone!
-Boot into Recovery (Vol Up + Home Button + Power Button) and wipe your data/cache/delvik cache and factory reset and start all over.
-If Recovery fails, try booting into Download Mode (Vol Down + Home Button + Power Button) and use Odin to get into stock firmware and start again.
(if youre using a Mac, Linux or Ubuntu Heimdall can be used to flash stock firmware)
-Also make sure the downloaded ROM/GApps are not corrupt when youre flashing. You can do this by checking the MD5.
-If youre getting a "STATUS 7" error, please update your recovery, or update your bootloader.
I also found this one that I will try an follow.

To confuse things a little, this phone is a telus phone that I had unlocked to use on Bell. I assume I reflash the telus firmware, am I correct?
Bro just download your phone's custum recovery .
Now go to Odin mod in your phone volume down, home, power.then select volume up.now connect your phone in to PC.
Now open Odin select PDA then browse custum recovery. And start button click.
I was able to get my original firmware back with odin.
Can someone link me to the current files for my phone so I don't screw this up again? Its a Telus i747m, which I believe falls under AT&T.
Thanks

Bro go to this site:http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Then create free account select your phone model and download latest firmware.
Then flash via Odin.
Best of luck.
I want to say thanks for all the replies.
I was able to sort out my problem and here is the solution.
I was trying to install the zip files from the micro sd and it was failing every time. I then tried the same sd card in a usb-otg cable and it worked perfectly.
It must have something to do with the built in sd reader.

Flash CWM with odin. Now, when the phone restarts remove the battery before it boots. Now, insert the battery after approximately a minute or so then try to enter recovery mode by using, Vol up + Power button + Home button. As soon as phone vibrates leave power button. Wait till it shows Samsung Galaxy Quattro. and then leave other two buttons too. It should boot into cwm.
At last if nothing works, do a dirty Flash stock Rom via Odin and repeat the cwm flashing process. :fingers-crossed:

I did all what you maintioned with flashing cwm and using odin. Also battery was out of phone for about 2 minutes (for any case).
So can you provide me a link for that "dirty stock rom" and give me intructions how to install it?
And one more thing. When i removed battery for more then 2 minutes, then start up phone, data and time was on system default. Same as phone when i bought it and first boot it. Also idk why, but my phone dont have sduos mark on top of screen, and has 1.6gb of internal memory. So maybe this will be helpfull.

Sometime back there was this guy who had almost same device as you are mentioning. You can contact and talk to him. Bcoz as per my knowledge Quattro has 5.1 User available space and Duos is written on Upper right.

By dirty flash I mean, flashing the stock rom over the current stock rom without formatting data and all. That is called dirty flash. Clean flash means wiping all data and then flash the Rom.
Take the backup of all the data and try to do a clean flash if dirty flash doesn't work.
Flashing Stock and repeating the cwm flashing process should work if every step is done as advised.
Try your luck again. :good:
What if i flash that stock rom, and then phone failed to boot. Then i will have to enter in recovery mode, but idk if i will be able to enter in...
If you flash the stock Rom properly, it should boot.

If you know how to use odin and flash the clean stock rom, it has to boot. There is no way it won't until unless you make some mistake and the flashing fails in between. After flashing the stock rom, initial boot will take long time, you need to keep patience.
Go ahead and flash the stock rom via odin.
