Where do I start? I bought my One X+ with much fanfare a couple of weeks ago and was very excited. But today I'm thinking about selling it. Don't get me wrong it is not a bad device. It is probably the best looking phone I've ever used. It has got an awesome display and great build quality. That is where the good things end.
I bought the phone well aware of the fact that Tegra chip had problem with Gameloft games. I was OK with that I don't like Gameloft games too much. But this phone can't even play games like Temple Run, Rayman Jungle Run and quite a few less graphic intensive games. Today, I bought Prince Of Persia: The Shadow and Flame from Play Store as I'm a big POP fan. But to my absolute HORROR it ran terribly on my phone. The exact same game runs beautifully & flawlessly on brother's 2 year old Galaxy Nexus. My blood boiled. I did not pay about $450 for this. On top of that the battery is very, very erratic.
Don't get me wrong folks. I have tried everything in the book. I've tried every custom ROM, kernel, SCRIPTS for gaming, TEGRA Overclock APP in order the improve my experience. All this turned out to a be a waste of time and money.
So, here I am. I am seriously thinking about selling the phone and getting a used S3 for the moment. Atleast I would get me money worth with that. Your thoughts?

I already tried Carbon ROM but it did not help. The experience should have been good out of the box especially when one has paid a good amount of money for a high end device such as this. Not everyone is comfortable flashing ROMs.

I believe the definition of lag differs for everyone. I compare it with my brother's 2 year old Galaxy Nexus which has now become obsolete.
Among the games you listed I had tried only Rayman Jungle Run - and I've got none of the problems you mentioned, runs fine without any lags whatsoever, completely smooth. Same goes for Carmageddon. I'm using InsertCoin 3.8.2 with elitekernel (and it's actually underclocked - restricted to 1,2ghz!). You might want to give it a try!
Flashed CM10.1 and played the same games. The performance improved a bit but still very unsatisfactory. Can I expect the official 4.2.2 update to improve anything?

I can't play it on another hox+ because I am the only one in my area with this device, but I have played it in my S2, Tab Plus and I know what you mean by lag I am a hard core gamer, I really have to say that for POP I experience no form of lag at all(not even the occasional hiccups) , haven't tried installing Gameloft games yet but will mention later after I try installing some. That said, I have had (very) minor lags with Horn(which by the way is optimized for tegra devices only) when I have lots of active apps running in the background, overall I am pretty satisfied with the performance given by the hox+ currently.

I reckon you stick my latest test kernel on there. I'm really pleased with it. I'm playing asphalt 7 on just two cores, no lag, runs smooth, full graphics, doesn't get particularly hot. Still murders the battery though. I guess that's the large-screen drawback.

I think use cm7 for better playing angrybird than many ROM.
Yup, angry birds is pretty laggy on this device. Didn't notice any difference when I moved from Froyo->Gingerbread, clearing RAM etc. makes no difference.
The gaming performance of the Ace is woeful. Thankfully I still have my iPod Touch
even in iphone there still lag..but not that same on ace..
but if you go to cm7.1 then installing the apps at internal not on sd..
makes you satisfy gaming angry bird^^

My experience is different I have to say. On my iPod touch 4G, with half the RAM of an iPhone 4, Angry Birds is totally smooth. So is Dead Space, Modern Combat 2, NOVA 2, Shadowgun, Real Racing 2, Asphalt 6 etc. etc.
The Ace just isn't for gaming - low res screen, not much RAM, weak processor, weak GPU. An iPod touch 4G 8gb smokes it completely for half the price (and comes with 4x the storage).

Maybe, but like I sayed, just tune your ACE right(install right ROM and in good kernel and some tweaks) and the games is running WELL!

playing angry birds on galaxy ace with cyanogenmod is smooth. iOS devices are different. there are very little devices so the phones are more optimised. try running android on iphone. it lags like @#[email protected] because it is not optimised. android phones are not as optimised as iphones. if google were to work with samsung to optimise the galaxy ace then maybe angry birds wont lag.

You must realise of course that isn't going to happen. Samsung and Google are thinking about the *next* device they're going to sell you. I have serious doubts that the Ace will even receive any more firmware updates after next summer. The lifecycle of a device like this is max two years.
So the point still stands really - if you like to play games on your mobile device, then be aware that the Galaxy Ace, as shipped, can't even handle Angry Birds without lagging. Unless of course you can be bothered to flash a whole bunch of ROMs etc. etc. and then you might be able to play a simple side-scrolling 2D game with about 20 moving objects on screen at once.

According to Gizmodo in their HTC One X review, the phone had issues playing 3D games. They specifically mentioned Temple Run, and the phone not picking up certain inputs due to the CPU being overloaded or something. Sounds iffy to me, so I'm seeing if anyone is able to replicate this kind of thing with the LTEVO, thanks!

Def not bc of lack of power I'm sure they just need to be optimized for the EVO..
If you think about it, there are only three Android phones with HD screens on the market right now. Most games are probably not yet optimized for that resolution as well. Even Apple doesn't have HD screens in their phones yet. Handset HD rendering is a rather novel feature.

I remember when I bought the OG Evo, it seemed to everyone like it was underperforming in the game department. People said it would be fixed with updates and it didn't work because of this or that, but eventually we just realized the hardware wasn't up to snuff. I don't want to make the same mistake with my next purchase, so how bad is it really? Are there any high-end games that run perfectly? How does shadowgun play?

I agree but something is wrong I am having small issues with many games that ran fine on the 3d and OG. For instance just downloaded Nba Jam tonight and it studders and lags the whole time un playable. This game was running pretty good on my EVO last week.
So I agree it is not the hardware but something needs fixed. Sounds like the HD screen issue may be to blame

I will go check it out. I am not saying that it is the issue but someone mentioned it and it sounds possible that these may not be optimized for our screen yet I know when qhd was first hitting the market some apps had trouble with it. It has to be something though because there is no way this hardware cannot run apps that ran fine on my OG it just doesn't add up.

Possible Fix
I don't have the 4g LTE yet I am a current 3D owner. Am trying to decide between GNex and LTEvo but that's another topic...
From what I've read somewhere else (can't quote where from) the fix was to bump your minimum cpu speeds up a notch and will probably fix most/all your lag. Use Antutu or other choice program (rooted only of course) and bump your min clock speed up one or two spots and I bet you don't run into issues.
If this doesn't work then ignore...thanks!
Shadowrun plays really smooth, and I'm amazed with the graphics. Looks sweet!
I was hoping this phone would game better than my gnex but so far it's not doing what I had hoped for. GTA3 has awful audio quality and I have to turn the settings down to low and lower res and other settings to get it to play lag free. I don't think it's any better than my gnex was. I am hoping the game needs an update.
Well I'm disappointed that a lot of the best looking 3D games do not work.
Not Working:
All Gameloft games EXCEPT Order & Chaos (but it still crashes some)
Even the brand new N.O.V.A. 3 doesn't work
Mass Effect Infiltrator
Dead Space
Field Runners
Working:
GTA III
Shadowgun
Minecraft
Deer Hunter Reloaded
Galaxy on Fire 2
Gentlemen, the phone has not even officially been launched yet.
Once game devs figure it out the games will run fine on our hardware. It is fact that our phones are more powerful than the 3D or the Gnex so it just needs to be optimized. On top of that, imagine how our phones will fly on a nice aosp Rom...

Pretty sure it has to do with the screens resolution.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
I'm also pretty sure it's due to the 1080p screen. I've seen people with the Asus Transformer Infinity having the same problem. Probably Nexus 10 people too if we look at their forum.
I had the same problem today with a game that i wanted to pay with a friend. I think that the screen had something to do with it buy what really pissed me off is that he is a die hard iphone 5 fan and trolled me by saying "oh look 1080p screen and it cant even run a simple game"..... Lot of these developers including some big ones are lazy @$$es.
It was same when Note came out and even with many new phones.
Most of the games will work fine even with odd resolution if they are coded properly. Most of the games are. But lot of game devs put device ID checks in Play store. So basically they disable the install of games on new devices. Many times they take their own sweet time to enable the game install on specific device in the name of quality control / compatibility.
But if you have them installed on your older phone which is rooted and pull the APK and put it on the DNA or my Nexus 10, most games work just fine even with high resolution displays. Its just that devs fearing the -ve reviews or bad star ratings in play store stop you from installing the game. When that happens, I usually write to the devs. Many smaller devs actually listen and I found it very surprising that many write back enabling access soon in Play store. But these big game developers who ideally should take less time as they have bigger teams and staff at their disposal are the ones who take more time to do so.
Makes me angry. And I wish Google implements a mechanism where we can get our money back any time in the future by returning the license if our new phones get the incompatibility issues which go on for more than 15 days. There really needs to be something like this.
It does not happen to even new phones with new resolution displays. This thing happened when SGS3 launched, then again with Note 2 as well. Both these phones had traditional display resolution. Still devs disabled the install in play store for a while fearing -ve reviews.
Unless you develop games I don't think you have the right to make that statement...

I have every right to make that statement when I can run the game without problem by pulling apk from old phone on my device but it's install is blocked artificially.
This is not new phenomenon either. Has been happening a lot for year or two now. It's all because they are afraid of ratings.
If you go through the initial days of sgs3 and note as well as note 2 forums you will see discussions on this matter there.
Some game had genuine issues and rather than fix a minor issue some games and apps were blocked for weeks to months at time. But at least they had genuine issues. Many didn't. Some were blocked in the name of exclusivity. Thankfully they couldn't ignore popular Samsung devices for long. But I have seen some lesser known phones having issues for months with installs being blocked for no good reason. Had issues with oppo finder and xiaomi phones in past like this.
And it's usually smaller studios that tend to respond quickly to user complaints when it should ideally be other way around.
It should not take a big studio 3 months to unblock install or patch the game for a new device.
From my Note 2, right in your face....
1080p is the future. not the past. they will be compatible or the market will force them to.
Modern Combat 4 works if you download the apk and sdcard data seperate. If you've already bought the game, I wouldnt think it to be unethical. But I don't condone piracy. This is mot the case for the majority of games that are not available though.

Totally spoils the game for me. Why can't it be an option in the settings to enable this or not? I'm sure I read that the Mali t-604 does 'free' AA in its hardware. The release was a **** up as well. It is now 2.3 GB with the added on file that was needed to fix the game.
Bottom line is the game just feels rushed for Android. I feel a little ripped off after spending ₤5 on it. I should have just reinstalled it for my PC and downloaded a hi res texture pack and saved ₤5.
Please up your game Rockstar!
Using the usb xbox360 gamepad I am enjoying the game so far but I wonder how to access the map via the pad? Always having to tap the display is quite annoying... Also it seems, that it's not possible to just aim at people (not shoot them) via gamepad as well...
I'm a fan of GTA but also learned the hard way to play big_boy games on a big_boy pc
