Flash an old 1.5 RUU.
Be aware they will upgrade it to 2.1 and you will lose root probably.

I have an idea how to But I haven't found anyone to test it yet.
OTA is easy to root, but they seem to use RUU at the service place.
I need to find someone to test this root idea though before we know if it works...
well iv left a message on the phone not to upgrade the phone to 2.1, if they ignore my message and do, i maybe willing to test your potential root solution
ok flashed 1.5 and done a factory reset, following app is still showing
"superuser permissions"
how do I get remove this, have tried removing via manage applications to no avail
Did you flash using the exe? You shouldn't have any leftover data. Might be worth formatting the sd card as well.

The solution is now confirmed to work, and stickied on the dev forum
i downloaded version 1.5 from modaco forum, when rebooting the phone, the ra hero 1.5.2 recovery image is still showing, tried flashing again to no avail, any suggestions?
p.s. flashed via update.zip
flashed the .exe and that seems to have done the trick, thanks for all your help, muchas gracias
Help.
I have a rooted Thunderbolt and I have been able to reject the update from Verizon until this afternoon when my phone started to update on its own. The update didn't go through and I got an error icon. Now my phone just goes through the same cycle of turning it self off and trying to update and crashing.
I am able to get to the Clockwork Mod recovery page but the only option that works is the 'reboot system now', which starts the phone and the whole cycle of trying to update is started.
Does anyone have an idea of how to get my phone working again?
Thanks in advance.
Mike
I'm really sorry to hear that happened, I'm not sure what you can do. Hopefully someone will be able to help you out. But at least I can tell you that you are not alone! I wasn't rooted, but my phone did autoupdate on its own at about 2:30pm today.
I posted about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234844
Pull your SDcard, wipe the pg05img.zip file, and try again. You might have to reflash clockwork.
This is the problem with running rooted stock ROMs. I know flashing a new ROM isn't what a noob wants to do, but it will avoid these very confusing headaches.
whats if you rooted using revolutionary? As far as i know there wont be that pg05img.zip file to delete.
Would you always be in danger is this if you are rooted and stay stock?
Why would someone want to root their phone and stay stock ??????

Nope. One only has to keep up with the current releases, rooted versions of which come out within days of official release.
Are you sure it is the Verizon update?
I have the same behavior on my T-bolt since about 10 pst today. However, just before the phone shuts down to reboot, I see a note about a new version of Clockworkmod Recovery 4.0.1.5.
So I have been working on the assumption that it is CWM Recovery that is doing an automatic update.
I also am running rooted stock, and have not updated to latest release.
OK, it isn't the update to CWM Recovery that is the problem; it is the Verizon OTA update, which they have figured out how to force on us. I fixed my phone using the solution given by Mike later in this thread.

This, plus "root while you can" - there's no guarantee that rooting will be possible with each subsequent (unrooted) release, but you can root now and stay rooted to keep your options open. Also, getting full backups of everything is easier when rooted.
Did the fix work?
Mike, did you try what loonatik suggested? Did it work? Waiting breathlessly...
Unless I am misunderstanding the problem wiping cache from Clockwork recovery should clear out the update and it will quit trying to install it. For the future if you go to settings in the about phone or software update section (dont remeber which) there is an option to de-select scheduled update checks.

Wait.. what? Most ROMs I've seen are debloated.. At the very least they have VZW crap removed
Thanks guys for all your help and interest. I tried the solution offered by lunatic but it did not work. Thanks any way I was still looping through continuous on and off cycle. I did however did find a solution on another site. Here is the solution from Sele.
http://www.thunderboltforums.com/forum/htc-thundebolt-hacking-guides/2257-rs-guide-how-get-rid-ota-forced-reboots-rooted-phone.html
It was easier fix than I thought it would be. Step #1 worked.
I also did this to stop the update from happening again.
"If you are rooted use root explorer or super manager and set system to R/W. Then navigate to /system/etc/security. Find the file named otacerts.zip and rename it to otacerts.zip.bak and reboot. Should fix you up."
I'm sorry I can't remember who offered this solution to give credit to. I haven't had any updates yet but only time will tell.
Good Luck with your phone.

Definitely a handy resource.. Every time a new OTA comes out, this is a very frequently asked question.
I suppose you could always use an RUU too

Can someone please tell me how to install the new RUU file from MECHA yesterday on a non-rooted device? This is the file that I'm downloading:

Download it, have your USB cable ready, run the exe and follow the prompts.
It will tell you when to plug in.

Just to clarify you can run a ruu on a stock device, it will completely wipe the device and it'll be just like having a new phone. But if you are rooted and you run a ruu you will loose root and s-off(unless you have a modified hboot) root users will usually wait for a dev to root the ruu and make a flashable zip that way they can retain root and s-off.
So as droidtheroy said above if you are stock and you want the update be prepaired to loose settings and the hook up the phone via usb and run the exe.

Thanks! Figured it out RIGHT before I saw your post. Here is what I did in case others are wondering:
1.)Download the RUU from the internet onto your desktop.
2.)Attach your Bolt to your computer using the "charge only" option with USB debugging enabled.
3.)Insure that your Bolt is AT LEAST 30% charged, then run the file on your computer.
4.)You will now have Gingerbread
You will lose everything on your PHONE, NOT your SD card. I used Astro File Manager to back everything up, and it was very easy.
The process does take about 15/20 minutes. I haven't found any problems yet.
Stock Phone, New GB Rom, and future OTA
I know this has been answered here somehow, but in a way I cannot follow (you guys blow my mind with all the tech talk).
I simply want to know: If I install the latest GB rom (2.11.605.0) on my stock phone, will I be able to get the OTA updates from verizon, when (and if) it officially releases?
If not, will I be able to restore my current stock rom, so I can? I have used my backup pro to backup everything (data and apps).
Please keep it simple, im old!
I know the downgrade is possible but it is a pretty technical process. Especially so if the old downgrade method doesn't work and I don't know for sure that it does. As for OTAs I'm not sure on that front.

If vzw releases this leaked version as the final build then there is no ota to do since you already have the correct version. You will continue to receive new ota updates as vzw releases them since you are on a supported version.
Now if vzw rejects this version and requests a new one from HTC you will not recieve the next version till you manually install it like you did with these leaked ruu meaning there will still be no ota since you are on a unsupported version.
If you stay with stock and you don't flash this leaked version you will receive the needed ota when ever vzw is ready to release it, say another 3 months, I know that sounds far fetched but it really is possible that they could delay it even further given there track record with updates.
So those are your options if your stock. If your rooted then there are a hundred more senerios but I wanted to keep it simple.

I wanted to let everyone know that this leak is great... my battery life has doubled, and the Bolt just seems faster/smoother (I'm getting a faster GPS lock too). I'm impressed, and would recommend to all who don't mind setting up their phone again!
Hey everyone, I am new to the rooting world however I have only experienced good things. I decided to root my thunderbolt using TB Autoroot+htc sync last night(had the original stock froyo, was going to installed cyanogen mod 7) and was successful. Unfortunately, I then installed the leaked 2.3.4 RUU GB which rerooted my TB before I installed the cm7(wanted to try the RUU out, bad idea lol). I was wondering if all or any of these are possible (dont care about losing data, just don't want to brick, ie avoiding command lines if possible):
1. root the phone while maintaining the leaked 2.3.4 RUU, just as was done for FROYO? Original reason for rooting was to remove the bloatware apps, but not having custom roms would be ok at this point if that is this is the only option. I know there is the revolution method to root, however will that work on the leaked 2.3.4 RUU?
2. root the tb with my current 2.3.4 RUU and install the BAMF 2.3.4/sense 3.0 GB build, or some other custom 2.3.4 rom?
A tutorial or walk through would be great! I know there are some out there, however I am looking for one specifically for those that have the leaked 2.3.4 RUU on the thunderbolt.
Also, can someone explain the difference in features of the GB builds that have been out for some time(customs) vs the RUU by verizon? I'm not talking about the physical aspects or the apps that come with, but more in terms of installing/switching between them. I know I need to root in order to install the custom roms, but assuming i can root the 2.3.4 RUU, will I be able to install any other 2.3.4 rom such as BAMF or cyanogen without problems? I have heard that you just arent allowed to go backwards, ie back to Froyo one you update to GB, but I should be able to install any 2.3.4 GB ROM once rooted via the bootloader(power+volume down) True?
Any help would be great! Thanks!
Yes you can. Just use revolutionary to root the new GB build. Here is a video tutorial for you.
Well, here comes your first less than pleasant reply...
Pretty much everything you wanted to know is posted in my thread stickied in the Q&A section. That's also where this post is going to end up. Please check my thread on basic noob questions, search before posting, and post in the correct forum.

If you are rooted, just use a program like root explorer to search for a file called otacerts.zip and rename it to otacerts.bak
When you open root explorer, make sure to put it into write mode. look at the top left side of the program and press on the mount r/w option

I've never rooted but I believe you need to downgrade. Revolutionary does not work with the latest OTA. There are several posts around that explain how to downgrade to the previous OTA (link below). Then you should be able to use the revolutionary method.

So I have read multiple articles on how to unroot and have tried 2 of them with no avail. I tried getting a nandroid backup and putting in in TWRP/backups/ but for some reason when I boot into recovery and select "Internal Storage" it doesnt show anything! Then I tried to flash the stock recovery from the toolkit and I get an error. Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah that might as well have been written in Arabic. I think that might be one of the methods I tried though?.. Except when I put the Nandroid backup in TWRP/backups then rebooted my phone into recovery the backup wasnt showing in there no matter what I did, and the other way just got an error.

I can never ever understand folks that root, than want OTA. As you suggested, the ROM is already available (stock rooted) in a custom recovery-flashable form, supplied graciously just days after the OTA started rolling out. And if you are referring to an upcoming OTA, the same will probably be true; or it will be available earlier for the international version (and isn't that one of the reasons we root?).
If you want the firmware package that came with the OTA, that is available to flash on modded phones, as well.

Lol I know, idk why I have to have to OTA either. Its just an OCD thing. I think its because I know that what I'm getting from OTA is clean and is a 100% working squeaky clean release by Android. Opposed to a ROM that someones put together themselves. I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the ROM or that there is any kind of malware or viruses in it. But its just an OCD thing were I would never stop thinking about it. And first thing my phone crashes or runs into a bug regardless of the problem I would blame it on the ROM. Lol now I sound like a sociopath

Haha, not really.
If a clean, bugfree OS is what you crave, than I would actually strongly disagree with the notion that an OTA is the way to do that. OTA is often a mess, as it only updates some things, and not other (not a complete image) and also keeps user data; which if you will see from any forum thread (here or other places) about bugs after OTAs, keeping user data is often the cause of many issues.
Factory reset plus OTA is one way around this. But if you really are OCD about a "clean" stock install, I would run the RUU. Either get S-off, or relock bootloader beforehand; and backup user data as this will be wiped. RUU is a complete factory released image.

Quick question. I put the Nandroid backup in the TWRP/backups/ folder. It doesnt show up in "Restore" but it shows up in "Install" in TWRP Recovery. When I click on it in "Install" it asks me "Swipe to Confirm Flash" Is it okay to flash Nandroid backup from the "Install" location or does it have to be done through "Restore"?
