[Q] Lenovo A660 Boot Loop - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear everyone
Not long ago I bought this Lenovo A660. It's a really nice phone, but it's in a boot loop now. I don't know exacly why it got this far but let me explain.
I flashed an Etotalk rom, because I needed Dutch system language, so the rom needed to be multilanguage. The flashing went ok and I used the phone a few days. Then I wanted to do a factory reset to wipe all the account data and apps I installed, because I wanted to give the phone as a birthday present to my best friend.
Right after I started the factory reset it began to reboot over and over again, showing just the factory reset animation (android character with animation and bar). Every 5 secs after it's on it just reboots doing the same thing again.
Things I've tried:
- Searched Android forum's for 3 days
- Tried to boot into CWM recovery Vol UP + Pow, but it will still boot in boot loop.
- I tried to use SP Flash Tool to reflash the recovery. It gave me a green circle and it was downloaded, but it doesn't change anything. Still the same.
- I tried to use SP Flash Tool to reflash the whole Rom, but it gave me an error. Probably because when I connect the phone, the device only shows up for 2-3 secs in the device manager and then disappears, so I think there isn't enough time to flash the whole rom.
- Tried some more button combinations and found out that I can boot into the so called "Factory Mode". Then I connected the phone with USB and it showed a Mediatek preloader device. So I thought I could flash it that way, but SP Flash Tool doesn't respond to it when it's in Factory Mode
- I found some other users with a similar problem, but they didn't describe how they fixed it. Someone mentioned a build-in etotalk recovery, but I don't know the button combination.
The last thing I wanted to say about what I've tried is when I'm in Factory Mode, I can see an ADB device connected in device manager. So I scanned for ADB devices and it does recognize the device. I tried to start recovery mode from ADB with cmd, but it just goes into the boot loop again.
I really hope someone recognizes the problem and is willing to help me. I'm so desperate to get this device working again.
Thanks in advance.

Fixed
I'd like to say that I have fixed the problem myself. After everything seemed hopeless, I forgot one thing. I was able to flash the recovery. I wondered why I would only be able to flash the recovery, well the scatter file I used differs from the other roms I tried to flash. So I used a different scatter file to flash the recovery.
Desperately trying to revive the phone I put the recovery (original scatter file I used to flash the recovery) scatter file in another rom map (rom from a russian site) and replaced the scatter file. Then I loaded it and to my amazement it began flashing everything. The whole rom and recovery. It did not disconnect. It probably put the phone in a wait mode.
Then it rebooted in the factory reset mode again, so I thought it wasn't fixed, but I waited and after the second boot, it booted the rom successfully.
So if anyone else ever has this problem, I'm glad to help you.

I would like to point out that i'm not and expert and don't actually know what the scatter file does, but it worked this for me. Maybe someone can clarify what the function of the scatter file is? Thanks.
I used the scatter file, which I originally used to flash the recovery. If you haven't tried it yet, you should try to flash a different rom with the first scatter file you used to flash the recovery.
If that doesn't work, you could try this one:
needrom.com/mobile/lenovo-a660-etotalk-mod/
Click on the Recovery link next to the picture and download the file. Then unzip it and copy/paste the scatter file in the folder with your to be flashed rom. That is what I used to fix it.
Hope it works for you. I now, for the first time know how it feels to brick a device after 10 brick-less years. And how it feels to actually fix it when all seems hopeless.

I have exactly the same problem as you on the same phone. I have tried to flash recovery with flash tool using various scatter files including "TWRP_v2.3.1.1_for_A660.zip" but I keep getting an error that says.
BROM ERROR:S_FT_NEED_DOWNLOAD_ALL_FAIL (4050)
Need download all image
[HINT]
DA partial images download is only allowed for the following pre requisite:1.all images have been downloaded to the target before and target could boot up;2. the images layout map on the target is the same as the load that is to be downloaded.

Somebody please help me out.

I had the same problem and tried all the ways described to fix the problem, but nothing worked.
Then I had the idea to format the whole flash memory to start with a clean system.
So I have chosen the format button in SP Flash Tool and formatted the whole flash memory. After that the A660 was completely dead.
So I have downloaded the Lenovo original ROM for A660 from here. It is the only one that contains all the files to flash the Lenovo A660 completely new. I loaded the scatter file in SP Flash Tool and flashed it. Then the phone booted normally  and I was able to come in recovery mode to flash Etotalk ROM or restore some backup file.

I have this problem...!
So if anyone else ever has this problem, I'm glad to help you.
I have this problem:
When I turn on the phone, the logo LENOVO comes, and remain for ever...!
I can go to recovery (I tried to flash different recovery-cybermaus,etotalk and TWRP-and tried to flash ROMS from them, but no success, always says cannot mount cache partition and "related" log files).
I cannot go to POW+VolDwn combination, Download/Factory mode? (before the problem I could reach this menu...)
Is like if I cannot access freely the partitions, If I try to mount trough recovery, error!
Any ideas?

[Q] P780 - Help installing ROMs (any)

Hi Guys,
Can someone help me, please? I've rooted my P780, and installed ClockworkMod Recovery. I can't seem to get any ROMs to install, though. I've tried four now, two from the forums here and two from needrom.com, but none of them install.
I put the ROM zip file on the SD card, reboot to CWM, wipe etc then try and install but for every ROM I get the following:
Warning: No file_contentssymlink: some symlinks failed
E: Error in <ROM zip file> (Status 7)
Is there something more I have to do? Or should I try and flash by other means?
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Stympy. I was looking at this myself, having found this thread:

And your helpful thread here:

I'll give it a go. It might be tricky because I have 64 bit and couldn't initially get the drivers working. I'll keep trying though!

Iff your phone is rooted do this:
Download TWRP 2.7.1.1 from my post and install Mobileuncle Tools from Magazin Play!
Extract TWRP from archive rename it recovery.img and copy on your internal memory, in the root of your internal memory not in one folder.
Open Mobileuncle Tool and go to Recovery Update>and the first option select and flash. Then restart directly to recovery. Not optional!
Try this!
Waiting for feedback.
Sadly, I'm still having problems.
I booted up the stock ROM (had to try and get it back off Chinese! )
I reinstalled Framaroot, rooted and then used MobileUncle tools to install the recovery.img from your TWRP zip as suggested. This has worked, I now have TWRP as recovery, which is good, thanks.
However, when I try and install a ROM from ZIP - just tried an AOSP and an SLXROM - I get the same thing:
Code:
symlink: some symlinks failed
Error executing undater binary in zip '/external_sd/SLXROM)v26-Lenovo_P780-ROW.zip'
Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok. It seems to me that you have problems with the archives, maybe i am wrong. Try to see if the archives are not corrupted by something.
Try first to replace your SD Card just for test, and try to reflash SLX or AOSP again.
One more thing: be careful when you download the archives not to be corrupted.
Sent from my Lenovo P780
It's still not working for me
I've taken the SD card from my older phone, which has been working fine for years. Formatted it and reloaded ROMS, but I still get exactly the same thing. I've tried five different ROMS, which were downloaded across two different computers at home and one in work on a different connection, so I can't imagine that all of these files would suffer the same corruption.
I've been having a search around and did find one person suggesting that it might be to do with storage space. I think I've seen in this forum (but I can't find it now) that you can resize the system storage partitions. Do I need to try this?
Thanks for your continuing help!
Partitioning didn't seem to help.
I followed the instructions in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p780/general/p780-repartition-storage-t2668744
But I still get the same thing when I try to install a ROM from SD Card. :crying:
I feel sure there's something really simple that I've missed, but even re-reading all the threads I can't figure it out.

I used the 'recommended' option in the ReParted/Aroma tool.
Now in the stock OS I can see:
Internal Storage:
2.56GB total
1.33GB available
USB Storage:
1.03GB total
1.02GB available
And then my 16GB SD card as well.
Well, I think I broke it. :crying:
Out of desperation and thinking I might have got the wrong idea, I tried a china, not ROW rom. Strangely, TWRP seemed to be able to install this. However, now the phone won't boot. So I have no OS at all!
I can still load TWRP recovery, but it still won't install roms. Also it keeps telling me it can't mount /data for some reason.
Can anyone help, please? What have I done?
This sounds like me ... the first 24 hours i had my p780. After that i discovered i have a newer version (also Chinese) of the phone then most of the forum members. I can only flash through the flashtools (i don't even bother to install a custom recovery anymore). You need an other preloader.
So just try it ( you got nothing to loose anyway )
Download the flashtool if you didn't do that already .
Make sure you have the correct drivers installed
Download a rom you can flash with the flashtool (i'm using a modified version of VibeUi2.0 no Chinese apps, and extra languages )
replace the preloader in the rom with the one attached.
shutoff your phone.
load the rom in the flashtool (make sure you've selected everything you need like DL with checksum etc, if you never did it please read threads and topics)
press download and connect your phone ...
for me all this above resurrected my phone again

Thanks for your reply Re-Mi! It gives me hope to know you got yours sorted. I'll definitely try your suggestion.
I'm just wondering, how do I use the flash tool? All the tutorials I've seen have needed the phone to be on and have usb debugging on. But I don't have a working OS for this, only TWRP recovery works now. Is that what the preloader is for? I shall research!
Again, thanks.

Step by step guide :
If your phone is not already soft bricked, back up whatever you want. External SD card is fine. If your phone is soft-brick then say goodbye to your data and skip this step.
Uncompress all the files you downloaded from this thread into a directory where you can remember. Including the ROMs.
Shutdown your phone if its not in a bootloop. If it is skip this step.
Open "Device Manager" on your Windows PC.
Plug in your phone through the micro USB cable. A device will show up for a few seconds in "Device Manager". After that, it will disappear again!
Recognize the device tree where it appeared, and wait for it as you unplug and plug in your phone again (if bootloop, its automatic!)
Catch it with a right click as it appears! Then choose "Update Drivers" and pick the directory where you uncompressed the drivers you downloaded above. Its ok if after catching it the device disconnects. You only need to install the drivers now.
Assuming the drivers are correctly installed, run the Smart Phone Flash Tool.
Click on scatter-loading and choose the scatter file "MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt" of the ROM you want to flash.
Make sure the checkbox "DL DA All With Check Sum" is CHECKED
Click on "Firmware->Upgrade" button.
Plug in your powered down phone via the USB cable again. See it flash.
When a big green circle appears on the screen, your are done!

Woohoo! Got my phone working!
Thanks for your help guys. In the end I borrowed a laptop that had windows 7 on, which I was able to get the flash tool working on. So I've now flashed with the kitkat version of the stock ROM
I still don't know why TWRP wouldn't flash any one of the eight different ROMs I tried!
I'm going to continue messing about with the phone. I'd like to get Life ROM working, but I need TWRP back first.
Again, thanks all.

Sp flash tool brom no space error 5069

I have been trying to flash a Micromax Canvas HD A116 stock rom on my phone that went dead all of a sudden 1 day. I do not know what the reason was. I tried all the stock roms from v1 to v5. I also tried SPFT v3.something and also SPFT v5.something. My phone gets detected very well on my laptop and on my PC both with Windows 7 and Windows 10 respectively. Every time I have tried to flash the stock rom, it gives error 5069 no space. I have gone through lots of forums online with regards to this topic. However, there is no concrete solution that i could find anywhere. A few reasons that i could find behind this error are emmc crash, larger rom file size, nand flash could not be detected and partition overlap. I do not know what all these mean except larger rom file size. Anyways, i have used all the stock rom files available for my mmx a116. Any help will be highly appreciated. Also to let u know, I'm a newbee trying to learn everything. Thank you in advance.

Do full wipe in recovery then flash stock rom
Firstly, thank you for answering my question Abdul. What is the meaning of do a full wipe in recovery and then flashing the stock rom? But end up in error 5069.

Can't boot into recovery mode after flashing ClockworkMod Recovery in Intex Aqua i5

Hello! This is my first post
I am hoping that you guys can give me some pointers about resolving the issue with my phone, I searched around but I can't find anything
I can't boot into recovery mode after flashing ClockworkMod Recovery... It just restarts and boots normally if I try to enter into recovery... I used the instruction from this website to do it: (I am unable to post the link, so I am putting the text in the quote box)
How to install CWM Recovery
Here is what you need to do to flash a custom recovery image – more exactly CWM Recovery – on the smartphone.
First task for you to accomplish: find and then flash MobileUncle MTK Tool on the AQUA i5.
Launch it afterwards. Then be sure you do this: tap the option called Update Recovery and afterwards transfer recovery.img to the phone’s SD card root.
After you have patience for a couple of minutes (not more than five), the CWM Recovery tool will be flashed on the Intex AQUA i5.
If everything went well, your handset should reboot into the custom recovery image. Now your phone is both rooted and installed with ClockworkMod Recovery.
NOTE: In the eventuality of a problem, like for example the smartphone gets stuck in boot loop, you need to solve this by taking the battery out of the device, then inserting it back in and re-doing the tutorial from the first step to the very last one.
The I5 could also surprise you with this issue: getting stuck in “Welcome” screen. For this to go away, you will have to repeat the steps we gave you for the previous problem. All is well now.

Hi and thank you for using XDA Assist
Unfortunally i couldn't find the device forum for your mentioned one so the better way to ask is to do it here >>> Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
Oh, It would be nice if a mod or admin can move this thread over there
ROM manager app may help
if your phone is rooted, then try installing a recovery from app called ROM MANAGER, hope that would help
I already tried that, Its says that my device is not supported
What phone have you got? Full model number?

i think you might have to reset your whole phone by installing stock firmware again,, this video i found from youtube. use your instinct to trust this video but its entirely your decision.

i wish i could help more.
Thanks
I will try to attempt it again... Will post the results here
Try Cwm rom manager, it will provide you with suitable recovery, otherwise try flashify, same function as Cwm rom manager but with extra recovery such as Cwm,twrp, pliz etc.

Already tried, Can't get past step 7
I was confused whether to do it while the phone is switched off or on... I tried both for that reason but no luck

switched off... flash tools usually require the device to be off. Did you install the driver correctly?
Yes, I did install the drivers correctly... atleast I believe I did

Bootloop, flashed stock ROM via SPFT, Recovery (stock) no longer accessible

Need some help! I woke up with my phone in bootloop (only Samsung logo). It is a MTK6589 device with Samsung S5 ROM specifically designed for this device. It is a rooted device with CWM recovery in it. I have been flashing ROMs for quite a long time. I flashed a different ROM in it thinking so sure that it will fix the issue but to big surprise, nothing has changed. Samsung bootanim and bootlogo are still there and still in bootloop. I tried to reflash one more time, wiped everything (Dalvik, etc.) but still no luck. Now, I came up with one last resort: flash stock ROM by SPFT (SP Flash Tool). So I downloaded the stock ROM for my device, flashed it by SPFT. With full hope that I fixed my device perfectly, still it did not change anything. Still the same problem occurred after flashing the Stock ROM. Now, I am trying to go to recovery, but it is just keeps on booting. Recovery (either CWM or stock) is no longer accessible.
PS: Before it happened, my device keeps on reminding me of xmodgames app which is installed in my device saying it is dangerous etc.
I will really appreciate you replies.

Sir,
Thank you for your response.
Correct drivers are installed. I have not tried flashing it with fastboot and I do not know what fastboot is. XD . The ROM I am trying to flash is the stock ROM of my device.

fastboot is the most preferred method of flashing a stock firmware. If you dont know about that then a look at this for downloading and setting up fastboot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
and this for how to use fastboot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277112

Sir,
I have already fastboot. But when I try to put commang FASTBOOT DEVICES it shows nothing. I can not access my recovery mode as well. When I try to press Vol Down+Power, it shows 3 boot options: normal, recovery, fastboot. But I can not select any of the three.

Thank you for your response sir. But I was not able to select anything. I tried to press power button to select fastboot, but not working. When it is on that screen, adb/fastboot also can not detect it. It is not going to any kind of recovery . I am afraid, my phone is totally dead.
